Apparently the Inspiron 530 is one of the few OEM PCs that can be upgraded with a modded Xeon E5450 if you flash it with a modified BIOS. Add a 750Ti or similar GPU, 8GB of RAM and a 250GB SSD from Crucial or Samsung and you've got a nice 150$ budget Gaming PC.
You should have done the "Tape mod" for the CPU, you know, that mod where you put tape in some specific contacts of that Q6600 to make it run at 3.0 ghz, it helps, I did that to my own before I got the Q9650.
Absolutely, I'm using a Q9400 right now, with a cheap DMS-59 dual-screen, 4GB RAM, Win10 and a 240GB SSD. For everyday use, it does everything without any bother.

I actually just bought an Inspiron 530 off of Ebay for just $30 with local pickup. It has a Core 2 Quad 9400 in it, along with 8GB of RAM, and Windows 10. It even has a Radeon 4670 installed. Great deal and a great little system.
I actually bought a custom built machine from my friend with the same CPU and RAM for £30 about 6 years ago. The main issue I had with it was the 4GB RAM limit on the motherboard.
haha, Im glad that I found this video (actually yt algorithm just threw it on my face but whatever...) few years ago I was doing an upgrade from Core2Quad to i5 2500k to I7 2600k to R5 3500x to finally R5 5600x. So at the beginning I need to say that the difference in fps (in games) between I5 2500k (4.5Ghz after OC. OC in 2500k and 2600k series is super easy even for beginners) to stock 3500x using the same GPU (RTX 2070S) was like 10 fps on average in modern AAA titles while playing in 1440p with 2 additional monitors plugged in the same time. The jump from 3500x to 5600x (again with 2070S) gave me - on average - additional 10fps in 1440p. Sometimes it's almost 20fps more, sometimes it's the same as 3500x. So long story short, if you are using Sandybridge CPUs and it's still runs great then just invest in GPU. 20fps seems cool if you are aiming for 60fps. Jump from 2500k or 2600k to 5600x seems cool on paper (20fps) but overall if you change 2070 super to 3070TI you gonna get like 100 fps more in the older games and over 20fps (5-6fps average when changing cpu) in modern AAA titles. If you are just gamer and not streamer, if you are using your PC just for gaming then R5 3500x or 5600x + GTX 1080TI (without ray tracing) or RTX 2070S or 3060TI or 3070 is enough to keep over 60fps on max settings in every single AAA title available on the market.
For 20 euro i got my secondary pc, I5 3570K, Asus p8z77-v pro, 8 gigs of ram, GTX 470 and a HAF 912. Friends are nice. As the people from the server might know, it now has 16 gigs of ram and a powercolor RX 580 i hate. Oh and replaced the shady no brand 850 watt psu with a Seasonic Focus+ 550
You can try to pick up a xeon e3 1240/70 v2 for what is usually half the price of a 3770k if you don't mind not overclocking but having the benefit of hyperthreading.
I gamed in a pentium and core 2 duo for some years they could play some games but nothing too new, some months ago i got a i7 3770 with dell motherboard so it was a good upgrade from a core 2 duo
I got a similar PC in early 2009 when I was 15- Q9400, GTX 285, 4GB of RAM, 1TB HDD. Was an absolute beast back then, it served me well until 2015. I bet it would be still usable today for things like 1080p60 (could play it no problem) video, productivity and even playing older games. I have it under my bed as a backup, if my main system failed. Edit: It had Q9400, not Q6600.
Super happy to see Linux benchmarks! Even if they don't support Vulkan, these old ATI cards might have another trick up their sleeve on Linux in the form of Gallium-nine: an open source re-implementation of DirectX9. It's still experimental and it's a bit trickier to run games with it compared to Proton but it has the potential to really turn some of those graphs around on some systems (especially if you used the old OpenGL renderer on Proton/Wine). Kinda curious to see if that's still the case on a Core 2 Quad though...
GTA V is DX10 and i heard WineD3D still can afford it, but info related is pretty limited. That's why i moved from my A10-5800K to an A8-7650K (the floor to test Vulkan with graphics).
The Core 2 Quad Q6600 is still usable for everyday tasks and light gaming. Just needs an appropriate GPU to pair it with. Maybe at most a GTS 450 or HD 5770. Any Q8000 or Q9000 series Core 2 Quad is better in every way from performance to power consumption though and usually just as cheap.
Personally I wouldn't game on C2Q anymore, rather have a Phenom II.. but for general usage, C2Q is still fine. I have a Xeon X3230 (equilent to Q6700) and it's usable.
Odd. The only one see that to be true occasionally is the Q8200, which is the weakest of the 45 nm Quads. It and the Q6600 often go neck and neck. So the Q6700 should be mostly better. I'd still recommend the 45 nm Quads though. They get significantly less hot to my experience despite both families being 95 watts TDP. The Q8000/Q9000 series have SSE4.1 as well. Will you test a first gen Intel Core chip from Nehalem? I've heard they're becoming the new best used price-to-performance.
I was able to game on an AMD FX 6300 with a Radeon HD 6970 up to 2019. Those old Radeons were quite good back in the day but now AMD is stumbling with the past two releases. The AMD FX was definitely starting to struggle back then and I probably would have fared a little better with Core 2 Quad 6600
Not the exact PC but when I did Uni 2 years back they were still using Q6600s running on LTSB Windows 10 for their workshop/general use PCs. It is surprising how well the CPU keeps up. You can totally do normal document processing and web browsing.
@@mycelia_ow I think that's to do simply with the age. I completely understand the point of the video was to show it on a budget. However considering its for gaming you should probably aim for the same price as a console. Only issue is the GPU with the silicon shortages.
Ah yes core 2 quad, i recently build a budget pc with this processor, with q9300, pair with rx 550, it's perform OK for modern standard, it's still can run modern game but with low or medium setting.
great video, very enjoyable to watch this restoration. one suggestion for these late 2000/early 2010 builds: maybe include a test of a previous gen fighting game on these? like Ultra Street Fighter 4 or Guilty Gear Xrd? fighting games have limited 3D scenes since they essentially have a single viewport of the stage. it could give an idea of what the system is capable outside of mainstream games like Skyrim and CS:GO.
I still have a few "modded" Xeon 5450 for builds like this that pop up...add an SSD, and an OEM GPU like an R7 240/250...and you got a capable web browser that can handle some basic gaming. Perfect computer for someone to learn about computers with, IMO.
I love budget cenric builds, I use AM4 at moment but I just tonight upgraded my brothers 8GB 1600mhz DDR3 system to a Ryzen 5600 with 32GB of 3000mhz Corsair RAM. A budget upgrade but such a huge one that it's almost incomprehensible. AM5 would cost me almost £500 at the moment and I don't need it so it's not worth it in the slightest.
I had this PC as a kid and I'm going to be a completely honest it's hot garbage it was always hot garbage and the fact that you made it better is honestly a miracle and I applaud you.
I used to have a similar setup a few years ago and lasted me pretty much through college before swapping it with an i5 3570 and a GTX 1060. The Crimson beta drivers are actually a bit better than the Catalyst ones, you only lose OpenCL acceleration.
This pc is punching way higher than it should. I wonder how much just adding a 4gb ram stick would help this thing. Oh, and hey, is that plok music I hear?
My upgrade advice, operating sys W10 Enterprise IoT 2021 LTSC, BSEL mode (CPU overclock with tape) on 3.0GHZ all core, if it has 4 ram slots up to 8 gb ram and cheap 2nd handed ssd. Decent internet pc, gpu what you can find, but i would not go wild, just for older games, lack of modern instructions, it is after all a dead platform really...
You should absolutely try Windows 8.1 on one of these PCs. It runs amazing well even on low end hardware (It ran perfectly fine on a 600 MHz Celeron in an older laptop of mine). Please give it a try.

You did great tidying that up. Stick a cheap SSD and a more modern tidy cheap motherboard and cpu and it'll be rocking! LOADS of options on Ebay nowadays. 'Bang for Buck' is the philosophy to go for. Don't get caught in the materialism trap of having "the best" hardware right now, because pc parts advance so quickly it's absurd.

Lots of people question this, but I got horrifically Ill off a PC before so take 0 chances on used hardware nowerdays. As long as these cases are left to dry (and I always spray the fans down with WD40) I have never seen it cause any harm to the components.

Don't laugh... I use Windows 8.1 on my second computer. I think its amazing how fast it boots; almost as fast as my main Windows 10 pc with an SSD. You get the resource efficiency of 7 and features from 10 like quick boot, plug and play and full support from Microsoft and programs
I used Windows 8.1 as my main operating system until very recently. I really did prefer it to both Windows 7 and Windows 10. The only reason I've moved onto Windows 10 is because when I upgraded to a Ryzen based system from my older Intel based one, it turned out that MSI had absolutely no Windows 8 or 8.1 drivers for the motherboard. They had drivers for Windows 7 and Windows 10 but nothing for 8. This meant that in 8 the sound and the ethernet simply would not work.
Personally I'd opt for either Windows 7, 10, or some sort of Linux flavor. My parents had a Windows 8 (then upgraded to 8.1, then upgraded to 10) PC and the user interface was a nightmare. I also buy a few laptops to upgrade/refurbish and sell on, and soime of those come with Windows 8.1 too! The first thing that happens is Windows 8.1 gets blown away; it is too painful to use in my opinion.
@@TheSpotify95 I don't get why? 8.1 looks and operates pretty much identically to 7 and 10, the only real difference being the full screen start menu. If you use something like Classic Shell for a proper start menu it's almost the exact same experience as 7.
Great video - glad to hear that there are still bargains to be had, and that the PC has likely been saved from e-waste. It's very unusual to see high speed hard drives - usually I come across 5400RPM, 5900RPM, or 7200RPM. I agree that the RAM could be upgraded, and if you could find a stronger Core 2 Quad to put in, then that would help too. Also, I did notice that you didn't connect the DVD drive back up! People do still use CDs/DVDs, myself included, which is one of the bonuses of an older system when compared to something more modern. And once again, on average, Windows 7 beats debloated Windows 10, even if by just a few frames.
I had that 5670 with a phenom ii x4 955 black edition for 5 years before the motherboard dead it was a pretty decent midrange card back in 2010 when i got it
i love the dell inspiron cases. theyre amazing to build in. i especially love the vertical hdd mounts, which are compatible with 2.5 ssds. perfect for mATX builds. love your work budget builds!
I had a very similar Dell growing up. A Vostro 200 something. It had a Core 2 Duo E6300, 2 GB of ram, and 8800GT. The case was identical to this but black instead of silver

I have a similar spec gaming PC, but it has a Core 2 Quad Q9550 CPU with 4 GB of ddr2 ram at 960 mph and with a GTX 570 graphics card. For me, it will handle games from 2015 or earlier fine. Core 2 Quads still perform reasonably well today since they have 4 physical cores. They can also run Windows 11
I also got a C2Q PC off of marketplace for £10... It was a Philips Freevents with a Core 2 quad Q6600, I think it had 2.5GB ram (2 1 gigs and a 512 stick I think), and unfortunately, a dead 8500GT. I upgraded it to a 120GB SSD + 500GB HDD, Quadro 410 (essentially a cut down GT 710 which go for a lot less money, £9 instead of £25-30 for a GT 710 usually goes for which is ridiculous), and 8GB of DDR2 800mhz. I will be selling this system soon, not as a gaming system but as a basic use, web browsing, zoom/teams etc PC. It works quite well. DDR2 from CEX is also dirt cheap (£2 per 2GB DDR2 800mhz DIMM).
Can't wait to see it upgraded. Will it take a C2Q 8000 or 9000 series? I'm guessing 8gb is the max on RAM, or no? Anyway, looking forward to more budget beast out of this one.
*This pc I’m gonna talk about may be unrelated but its the same era vista machine. I own a 2008 HP DC-5800 Microtower with a core 2 duo E8400 at 3.00ghz and I upgraded it to 8gb ram and threw in a AMD radeon 7000 series GPU and its running windows 10 with 2 HDD’s internally (One is boot drive while the other is a storage drive) I actually use it as my main desktop despite the hardware being a little old it does modern tasks and gaming pretty well if you keep your settings on the low side.*

Literally just built a windows xp 2.8ghz socket 478 pentium 4 with 1gb of ram with the last supported firefox version, it's being made for retro games, anyways it was pretty impressive that you can still browse the web with this thing, youtube struggles on 480p and ads make it even worse, I was able to watch the whole thing with almost less than 10 stutters here and there, the fact that when you get a ''modern classic'' system to do new things, idk it just feels different

I know that there was a motherboard in the same case as this that could do 8 GBs of RAM if it had a maximum when it originally only could do 4 GBs

@@GLDragon93 you also lose out on the iGPU, which is definitely nice to have for troubleshooting reasons(or to use it to flash a GPU bios)

I often found the Q8XXX Series to perform a tad worse due to lack of cache.

the fx 6300 is like 30% faster then a q6600.

Not the exact PC but when I did Uni 2 years back they were still using Q6600s running on LTSB Windows 10 for their workshop/general use PCs. It is surprising how well the CPU keeps up. You can totally do normal document processing and web browsing.
Use to run that processer back 10 years ago with 2 8800gtx. Use to love it's overclock capability
Problems with older platforms is ram and the chipsets failing. I'm surprised they weren't running old i3s with ddr3/4, they hold up far better.
@@mycelia_ow I think that's to do simply with the age. I completely understand the point of the video was to show it on a budget. However considering its for gaming you should probably aim for the same price as a console. Only issue is the GPU with the silicon shortages.

Ah yes core 2 quad, i recently build a budget pc with this processor, with q9300, pair with rx 550, it's perform OK for modern standard, it's still can run modern game but with low or medium setting.
8GB Ram would have increased the frames and Core 2 Quad 9650
i still run the very same cpu on my side pc with 8gb of corsair ram. it runs win 10 flawlessly and plays youtube vids in 1080

one suggestion for these late 2000/early 2010 builds: maybe include a test of a previous gen fighting game on these? like Ultra Street Fighter 4 or Guilty Gear Xrd?
fighting games have limited 3D scenes since they essentially have a single viewport of the stage. it could give an idea of what the system is capable outside of mainstream games like Skyrim and CS:GO.
Tip: The Inspiron 580 motherboard fits perfectly in the Inspiron 530 case. Nice of Dell to reuse the same rear IO on a newer board 👍

I still have a few "modded" Xeon 5450 for builds like this that pop up...add an SSD, and an OEM GPU like an R7 240/250...and you got a capable web browser that can handle some basic gaming. Perfect computer for someone to learn about computers with, IMO.
I actually still have a core 2 quad in my main pc, I'm definitely going to upgrade soon but it's lasted me forever
I love budget cenric builds, I use AM4 at moment but I just tonight upgraded my brothers 8GB 1600mhz DDR3 system to a Ryzen 5600 with 32GB of 3000mhz Corsair RAM. A budget upgrade but such a huge one that it's almost incomprehensible. AM5 would cost me almost £500 at the moment and I don't need it so it's not worth it in the slightest.
I had this PC as a kid and I'm going to be a completely honest it's hot garbage it was always hot garbage and the fact that you made it better is honestly a miracle and I applaud you.
I used to have a similar setup a few years ago and lasted me pretty much through college before swapping it with an i5 3570 and a GTX 1060. The Crimson beta drivers are actually a bit better than the Catalyst ones, you only lose OpenCL acceleration.
This pc is punching way higher than it should. I wonder how much just adding a 4gb ram stick would help this thing.

My upgrade advice, operating sys W10 Enterprise IoT 2021 LTSC, BSEL mode (CPU overclock with tape) on 3.0GHZ all core, if it has 4 ram slots up to 8 gb ram and cheap 2nd handed ssd. Decent internet pc, gpu what you can find, but i would not go wild, just for older games, lack of modern instructions, it is after all a dead platform really...

You should absolutely try Windows 8.1 on one of these PCs. It runs amazing well even on low end hardware (It ran perfectly fine on a 600 MHz Celeron in an older laptop of mine). Please give it a try.

You did great tidying that up. Stick a cheap SSD and a more modern tidy cheap motherboard and cpu and it'll be rocking! LOADS of options on Ebay nowadays. 'Bang for Buck' is the philosophy to go for. Don't get caught in the materialism trap of having "the best" hardware right now, because pc parts advance so quickly it's absurd.
core 2 quad are still good for web browsing, basic apps and some games that not required AVX instructions.
I'm surprised there are no fried/blown/vented caps on the motherboard. These were notorious for this even after only a few years of use.
That's literally the pc I have, I have replaced the quad 2 duo for an i7 870 and another board. Nothing fancy but it does the job

i actually have a pretty simiar spected pc like the one in the video ( the gpu is a hd 5570 tho ) I finished gta v with 720p low setting ( 20 fps ), still had

My anxiety when you wash the case with cables and the cpu fan with bucket of water.
Lots of people question this, but I got horrifically Ill off a PC before so take 0 chances on used hardware nowerdays. As long as these cases are left to dry (and I always spray the fans down with WD40) I have never seen it cause any harm to the components.

still have my inspiron 530, thermal take 500w core 2 duo and 6gb ram paired with a beautiful galax gts 250 love the thing and plan to hold onto it till its vintage
still even got the vista install disk plan to use that in about 10 years or so on wiped drives and do some testing

I use Windows 8.1 on my second computer. I think its amazing how fast it boots; almost as fast as my main Windows 10 pc with an SSD.
You get the resource efficiency of 7 and features from 10 like quick boot, plug and play and full support from Microsoft and programs
I used Windows 8.1 as my main operating system until very recently. I really did prefer it to both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
The only reason I've moved onto Windows 10 is because when I upgraded to a Ryzen based system from my older Intel based one, it turned out that MSI had absolutely no Windows 8 or 8.1 drivers for the motherboard. They had drivers for Windows 7 and Windows 10 but nothing for 8.
This meant that in 8 the sound and the ethernet simply would not work.
Personally I'd opt for either Windows 7, 10, or some sort of Linux flavor. My parents had a Windows 8 (then upgraded to 8.1, then upgraded to 10) PC and the user interface was a nightmare. I also buy a few laptops to upgrade/refurbish and sell on, and soime of those come with Windows 8.1 too! The first thing that happens is Windows 8.1 gets blown away; it is too painful to use in my opinion.
I wish I didn't upgrade from 8.1 to 10 back in 2016. 8.1 was much lighter on my junky Celeron laptop I had back then.
I liked windows 8.1 more than windows 10 or windows 7 however I'm on windows 11 atm been fine I guess
@@TheSpotify95 I don't get why? 8.1 looks and operates pretty much identically to 7 and 10, the only real difference being the full screen start menu. If you use something like Classic Shell for a proper start menu it's almost the exact same experience as 7.

The Q6600 overclocks very well, I hat the same specifications, back in the day but, I had 8GB ram and it was not a prebuild

Great video - glad to hear that there are still bargains to be had, and that the PC has likely been saved from e-waste.
It's very unusual to see high speed hard drives - usually I come across 5400RPM, 5900RPM, or 7200RPM.
I agree that the RAM could be upgraded, and if you could find a stronger Core 2 Quad to put in, then that would help too.
Also, I did notice that you didn't connect the DVD drive back up! People do still use CDs/DVDs, myself included, which is one of the bonuses of an older system when compared to something more modern.
And once again, on average, Windows 7 beats debloated Windows 10, even if by just a few frames.

I had a very similar Dell growing up. A Vostro 200 something. It had a Core 2 Duo E6300, 2 GB of ram, and 8800GT. The case was identical to this but black instead of silver
Actually not a bad XP build / Vista Build and with an SSD it can still be good for a lot of things in 2022.

Your channel has inspired me. Cleaned and re-thermal pasted a gtx 8800, a gtx 9800, and an AMD sempron 3800 desktop yesterday.
I have a similar spec gaming PC, but it has a Core 2 Quad Q9550 CPU with 4 GB of ddr2 ram at 960 mph and with a GTX 570 graphics card. For me, it will handle games from 2015 or earlier fine. Core 2 Quads still perform reasonably well today since they have 4 physical cores. They can also run Windows 11
Overclocking just requires a piece of tape (if it's a 1333FSB board) and it'll run 3GHz. Should be good enough for most games of the era.
I also got a C2Q PC off of marketplace for £10... It was a Philips Freevents with a Core 2 quad Q6600, I think it had 2.5GB ram (2 1 gigs and a 512 stick I think), and unfortunately, a dead 8500GT. I upgraded it to a 120GB SSD + 500GB HDD, Quadro 410 (essentially a cut down GT 710 which go for a lot less money, £9 instead of £25-30 for a GT 710 usually goes for which is ridiculous), and 8GB of DDR2 800mhz. I will be selling this system soon, not as a gaming system but as a basic use, web browsing, zoom/teams etc PC. It works quite well. DDR2 from CEX is also dirt cheap (£2 per 2GB DDR2 800mhz DIMM).

*This pc I’m gonna talk about may be unrelated but its the same era vista machine. I own a 2008 HP DC-5800 Microtower with a core 2 duo E8400 at 3.00ghz and I upgraded it to 8gb ram and threw in a AMD radeon 7000 series GPU and its running windows 10 with 2 HDD’s internally (One is boot drive while the other is a storage drive) I actually use it as my main desktop despite the hardware being a little old it does modern tasks and gaming pretty well if you keep your settings on the low side.*

On a more serious note, I occasionally run Vista on my Dell Inspiron 700m and DAMN is it snappy! Really goes to show just how good the Pentium M was for it's time.
Literally just built a windows xp 2.8ghz socket 478 pentium 4 with 1gb of ram with the last supported firefox version, it's being made for retro games, anyways it was pretty impressive that you can still browse the web with this thing, youtube struggles on 480p and ads make it even worse, I was able to watch the whole thing with almost less than 10 stutters here and there, the fact that when you get a ''modern classic'' system to do new things, idk it just feels different
