This is sooo real. After I managed to stop caring about developing a cohesive style, I turned around one day and realized I sort of had one that was more adaptable than if I'd just forced one. And love the bit about not becoming a character of yourself!
I’m bumping into this issue with my first graphic design job. My internship in college wanted one specific style which didn’t bother me since it was the style I was used to doing. Now I am being forced to think in several different styles and while I love it I will admit it is kind of hard at times Your video really helped me think through embracing this change. Thanks 😃
I am at the point where i am stuck in the box like you mentioned, especially with my style of artwork. I was talking to my brother yesterday and he mentioned certain things you said in this video such as experiencing and rebranding. Thank you Jesse for confirmation. I am ready to be open with my artwork.
Videos like yours are the reason I want to be a graphic designer I’m still trying to figure out how to get started on it but I’m starting school and trying to learn on my own as well, but your videos also help make the process less scary and more realistic with the hardships and overcoming those fears one might have!
This is very similar (if not the same) to what we painters face. For me, as a painter who does this as a hobby, I discovered my style of painting early on, so that everyone knows that I own the painting just by looking at it. At the time, I was like, well, I sometimes like to confront others in their styles, but I think I like to do something my way in this way, and this is the result that I always like to see.
I don't really know why but i found myself grinning throughout your final words .. like i felt like this was a genuine conversation between a friend i've known and is more experienced than me as a designer but just genuinely wants to help me get better. i genuinely needed that
when I was in school I was fascinated by some of the design work that would be hanging in the studios----all done by my professor. the thing that bothered me was even though I liked his work (the look), I did not understand what design was about. in trying to figure this out I learned about Paul rand (one of my favorite designers). his IBM (with the eye, the bee and letter M) was so pivotal in my design education (that breakthrough moment). in reading more about him I came across a quote of his that helped me calm my obsession with having a style. he said, "don't try to be original. just try to be good." I never forgot that quote-----it helped me worry less about trying to be different....and focus more on just improving as a designer.
2 / 2 Your perspectives have such valuable insights on art/design. Love watching your videos, they motivate me so much and make me feel normal to hear your thoughts & experiences, thank you!
I like ur style Jesse , My favorite was the cocktails / skater mag pages 🔥💯 I think cocktails and designing go hand to hand I just left my marketing job to pressure bartending
great video! i love the outlook. I wish social media requires less "consistency" It's a bit of a catch 22 because of the pressure of an algorithm. But this video speaks to that- just, make! or as nike says, just do it! make what you want to make.
I've been completely open with designing and taking in different styles that I feel when it comes to my own style or just designing for myself, I find myself wanting to be playful and almost incorporate "bad" design to stay away from what I'm used to.
can you make a video talking about copyright? how to avoid it when designing prints to sell? where to find pictures, fonts, textures, etc that you can legally use
That's a great perspective to hear on the opportunities missed when specializing into a specific style. What do you think of the opposite camp who would argue that being a specialist allows you to know your stuff so well, and be so good that opportunities will come for that expertise?
Hi! I have a question. My Mac book pro is on its final days and was wondering what is a good inexpensive computer for graphic design? I’m saving money to eventually buy another Mac book hopefully in a year from now.
Hey Jesse, do you have any videos on your college experience and how the degree has helped you? I'm trying to decide whether to learn design by just experience through work, trial and error, or adding college on top of doing that as well is the best option for me… I want to know how it was for you.
Will you think carefully about customer before you design your artwork in the style you liked? I mean Can this artwork make money when you design it with your spontaneity?

Great video! Depending on what project you're working on, sometimes I have to turn my "style" on or off to best fit client needs

my ADHD brain enjoyed this video su much ! it's easier to listen to you when there's this graphic design process going on on the screen.
Finding my own style is very hard mostly creating posters flyers and music design 🎶🙂
