  • I really want Wizards of the Coast to be a bit more organised and transparent about how they are going to reprint any of these Universes Beyond cards - and I would love to see an example of it in order to lessen my fears.

    WotC/Hasbro genuinely have no desire to ever reprint these. They never did. It was only because of an outcry by a decent portion of the fanbase that they even reversed their decision about The Walking Dead stuff. Even then it was handled poorly. I'm sure they whatever they do will either be the laziest option or will stall indefinitely due to whatever excuse they can come up with that will placate the general audience until everyone just moves on. There is no honest feasible way they can reprint all of the mechanically unique Warhammer, Doctor Who, LotR, etc. sets PLUS the new stuff and make it all fit seamlessly into their truncated main Magic IP sets that have drastically been reduced in frequency. They're just waiting for everyone to forget. Force them to buy it now, deal with the consequences later. Preferably not at all. This really sucks because I would actually love to get the Warhammer decks. Can't really do that anymore. Nekron is going for about 200 dollars now. WotC definitely looks at aftermarket sales to dictate what cards are sought after for high end reprints. It's not even the mechanically unique cards in Warhammer that are necessarily the sought after aspect. It's that the fanbase knows there is no real plan in place to get them reprinted therefore artificially creating scarcity and ultimately selling the most product. I love the Universes Beyond idea. I definitely wish it was more infrequent. For my own wallet and those of the wider audience, it may not speak to us until people start to realize you won't get access to these for a long time if ever.

    To be fair, when originally said that they would reprint in universe versions of Universes Beyond cards, the only way to get those cards was through Secret Lair.
    Them having actual standard set prints means a few things:
    1: There will be a lot more Universes Beyond cards in the marketplace
    2: There will be more Universes Beyond chaff that nobody wants to be reprinted, much like every set.
    I don't have a problem with mechanically unique cards in a set. It happens with every Magic set. Selling Mechanically unique cards through limited print Secret Lairs is a different beast altogether that locks players out of acquiring these cards during their sale period for a multitude of reasons.
    If they never reprint Shelob's ambush or Pippin's Bravery, that's fine.

Basically, whole sets full of Nadus: last-minute changes with insufficient playtesting.

    In what capacity can any of the words of WotC as an entity be trusted? How many 'Blog promises' have come and couldn't even survive a standard rotation? You're right about one thing, UB has instantly accelerated out of the realm of possibly keeping up with reprints. Another thing to consider is WotC keeping this issue in purgatory gives them a substantial vault of reprint equity if they actually try to keep their word in the future. At that point it won't even matter, they can just skim the cream for chase cards and abandon the rest into power crept obscurity.

    The Universes Beyond creature type problem is very tricky. Take Tyranids for example. WotC can create a Universes Within creature type that has an added rules baggage that that specific creature type will always be the same as Tyranid. So mechanics-wise, that fixes the problem. But flavor-wise, it means WotC has to create all sorts of pirated MTG versions of every copyrighted creature type.
    It's easy enough to make humans from Stranger Things or Street Fighter turn into humans from all sorts of planes in the MTG Multiverse. But what about Tyranids? You'd have to create an entire legally distinct form of creature to translate Tyranid cards into their Universes Within versions.
    But they can go another route. You know how Viashino and Naga became Lizards and Snakes recently?
    I personally don't like that change but that form of errata can be a good way to deal with the Universes Beyond creature types.
    Tyranids can be turned into Mutants for example. (I don't know much about 40k lore so this example might not be too accurate.) All cards that interact with Mutants also affect Tyranids, and vice versa, because they are now one and the same.
    We will still have some problems with the Time Lord creature type though because that one is tied to the Doctor's Companion mechanic. So Time Lord can't be made into a pre-existing MTG creature type. Or maybe they could turn Time Lord into a pre-existing creature type (let's say, Alien for example). But that means WotC can never print a new legendary creature whose only creature types are Alien and Doctor.

    What gets me is how easy the solution is to the problem.
    Just make it the other way around.
    Instead of going through the hazzle of still getting the copyrighted name of a character on the in-universe version they could just print the name of a in-universe version on the collab card.
    This way they avoid all of the legal shenanigans with the name rights for the reprints. Just put a "This cards name is [Bob, the mythical artificer]"-tag under Iron-Mans name-tag for example, and gone is the issue.
    Even if the reprint itself wouldn't be directly on the horizon they would establish that this collab card is the skin, and not the other way around.

      This... is a really good idea. Like how "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" from Ikoria was technically "Zilortha, Strength Incarnate," but only available in Godzilla form until Commander Masters (3 years later).
      They should have been doing that the entire time! And obviously used generic words for the creature types; Tyranids should have been Alien Insects (or maybe just Insects), Astartes could have been Human Mutants (or maybe just Mutants), etc. It wouldn't have been that hard, and the idea was clearly there almost from the beginning. I'm kinda mad now that they didn't do it this way right from the start.

    I think this video was missing something incredibly important, how long it typically takes Wizards to reprint cards. If you're going to ask, when will these be reprinted, we already have a rough idea by looking at how quickly Wizards reprints their own expensive chase cards. The Great Hedge is a great case study for this. It was originally reprinted in 2019 and very quickly became expensive (MTGGoldfish shows it costing was well over $20 in less than a year after printing) and it didn't get reprinted proper until Commander Masters almost 4 years later. Goldspan Dragon is another decent example. Releasing at the start of 2021 it spiked due to standard play to over $40 before cooling and eventually being reprinted in Jump Start 2022 which released almost 2 years later at the end of 2022. If you look at the big chase cards of sets this is the typical range for the cards to be reprinted, 2-4 years. This also makes sense given the lead time for Wizards in making products is about 2 years. I imagine creating mass release version of mechanically unique secret lair cards will be different since they know going in they need to find a place to put them, but for The One Ring and other major cards in the Fallout and Who commander decks as well as other future Universes Beyond booster products we probably won't see them for at least 2 years, probably 3 at the earliest after their first printing. Which is just business as usual for how Wizards reprints chase cards.

It would be cool to see other Doctor creatures (Arcade Gannon) become viable partners and open the mechanic up slightly while primarily just making simplified reprints easier to print, and suddenly you could have a "Battlefield Medic" for the in-universes War Doctor and so on and pivot the concepts toward medical doctors or something. Heroes as a creature type has already been errata'd into Soldiers and Warriors.

    I will say, there is precedent for doing something that makes a universes within version of a type line.
    Viashino and Naga each have a functional errata where you are always supposed to treat them as Lizards and Snakes, respectively. So they could just introduce a type-line later called Time-Traveler or something, and they just say any card that interacts with Timelords also does so with them.
    I'm not saying tbey *will* do that. I'm just saying that they have precedent for doing something as extreme for different reasons.

    They just need to make Universes Within draftable sets. I'd also like them to theme it as someone/something having merged a whole heap of universes together resulting in a strange yet familar universe with people that aren't quite who they were in the other universes but their core character remains. That way it at least makes some kind of sense in universe and thematically allows it to be a lot more disjointed.

I say this as someone who loves UB but I feel like both parties are likely unwilling to find a solution. I don't care about the universes beyond announcement for it coming to standard, I am sad, but I understand why they are doing it and it can be very popular. My problem is the release cadence and the excuse that the products that are "not for me" seem to keep increasing. I have only played Arena for years since paper has just taken too much time to keep up to date. I tend to go in and out with Arena playing for 6 months to a couple years then take a break. I am already mentally starting a break since MH3-BLB-DSK I have barely played DSK. I tend to spend 1-2 months enjoying magic (1/2 draft 1/2 constructed) then get a cooldown playing other games or doing other hobbies, and getting hyped for the next set during spoilers. Ever since MH3 started coming out I have just felt that I only had time for magic, if I wanted to do anything else I would be punished and left behind. I haven't even engaged with foundation spoilers. I don't care what is there, they made my hobby into a 2nd job. I can't separate the fun from the efficiency and it takes the fun out of it.
    They said they are focusing on arena as an investment, but it is dangerous to make it feel like you must play 24/7 and if you look at most long term games that last, one key important thing they know is that you can't make the person play 24/7, but in more seasonal timings. I admit 2 months is exactly when i start to get bored of a set, but even if I'm bored, I am not ready to engage with a new set yet. I like to enjoy other hobbies and spend time doing that.
    all of this is to say it feels like magic isn't for me anymore. I can now see the apeal of EDH, but I have never engaged with it or have a friend group where you can just ignore the rest of WOTC's decisions.

    The issue I have with this situation is what happens if there's a mechanically unique card that's good, but say it's a legendary creature for commander. One of the ones from the 40K commander decks for example. What happens if they're generally good, but some of the most synergistic cards that go with it were also from that commander product. Are they just going to have to functionally reprint half of a commander deck in universe just so that people have access to all that stuff.
    Mothman from the Fallout decks is one that comes to mind most. The radiation counter mechanic is unique to that deck. So if you reprint Mothman, do you then have to reprint every card that works with the radiation mechanic in universe?
    Seems like they've put themselves between a rock and a hard place, which is just going to expand going forward.

  • @sagecolvard9644
    @sagecolvard9644 3 місяці тому

    The best solution is to just not do as much UB, but that clearly isn't an option with their corporate leadership as it is.
    The second best option is that, at the end of each year, we get a big creature-type errata for all the UB stuff (like how they recently changed Viashino and Cephalids to Lizards and Octopi, they could just as easily change Astartes and Tyranids to Metathran and Insects), and then do a big "Universes Within" set at the end of the year with all of those UB-exclusive cards remade into MtG canon-compliant versions. Unfortunately, this option requires that every UB card they make in a year get an extra name and art, which would mean either making 1 less alternate art version in the original UB set or spending additional money on every single card they print for relatively little immediate return, and I don''t expect them to see either of those as acceptable outcomes either.
    There are maybe a few other options, but I can think of none that are any more likely to happen. Ultimately, the answer to the question "how could they fix this?" is "why would they?".

    Ok so I’ll preface this with I haven’t been playing magic for that long only a couple years worth of time at this point.
    The reprinting issue wouldn’t be too bad when considering the number of products they put out.
    100 cards across 2 years of sets could be done fairly simply.
    The problem is that they keep pumping out more and more of the UB sets making it impossible, UNLESS they begin reprinting UB cards IN UB sets.
    The one ring could easily be a “negaband” or a “star brand” in marvel.
    Astartes could be any of the powerful knights from an FF game.
    Tyranids could be the brood (I think that’s what they are called in marvel)
    UB staying UB would help the people who REALLY don’t want UB to be a thing separate those cards from their UW cards.

    • @Fluffkitscripts
      @Fluffkitscripts 3 місяці тому

      The brood lean far more into the body horror of the xenomorph while the tyranids are more akin to the devouring swarm of the zerg. They don’t really operate the same at all. So sure, you could, but it wouldn’t fit well.

    Now that Universes Beyond is going through Standard, hasn't this problem just become the same thing as the Sheoldred, the Apocalypse issue (whose current prince is $80-$90 and is unlikely to see a reprint before it rotates out of Standard in 2025)? The Universes Beyond factor is kinda extraneous, even for the Secret Lair cards, because while they don't have any plans at the moment they have at least shown us they *can* do Universes Within reprints. The core questions is how does WotC reprint *any* card that is important to a format?
    The fault is partly our own as players/consumers. Because we (collectively) hate getting copies of cards we already own and love getting exciting new cards, there's little incentive for WotC to do anything other than build reprint equity. In the last 12 Standard sets (i.e. all the ones in current Standard incl. MAT and BIG but excl. FDN) there are only 139 reprints at an average of 13 per set. There were 2722 first printed cards in the same 12 sets. That means Standard is less than 5% reprints and a lot of those reprints are lands (41 of the 139 reprints or ~30%). Foundations will alleviate this somewhat but only for the cards in that set, not all cards and certainly not future cards.
    Commander decks are the main way WotC have been doing reprints and that has its limits. Cards must be good in a multiplayer format, must fit with the deck's color identity, and must fit with the theme of the set they're attached to, and they must be at the appropriate power level for a precon deck. When Final Fantasy releases we'll get to see what all that looks like for a Standard-legal set, but those four issues aren't going anywhere. So it all circles back to the same problem. How does WotC reprint *any* card that is important to a format?
    I don't have an answer btw, I'm not smart enough to solve it.

  • @AlterationA
    @AlterationA 2 місяці тому

    I would bet an exorbitant amount of money that the easy answer is to just print them into Commander Legends 3 as Universes Within versions, and Mystery Booster 3 to just print the same name and text box, but with more boring art and a financial kickback to the licensor. They could simply choose the methodology based on how coercive the brand holder is.
    I know everyone's concerned about branded type lines, but there's been creature type errata for decades. Falcons are Birds, Hounds are Dogs, Naga are Snakes, Viashino are Lizards. When the need to market in tandem with the tie-in runs out, so too does the need to adhere to the branded labeling. And that moves the ball to Wizards' court. The company we know would never leave reprint equity on the table, so if the brand doesn't want to play nice, Wizards just scrubs all the identity from the card and reprints it anyway. It's exactly what they said they would do before. The UB version becomes the "fancy" version to show off, and the remake becomes the reprintable game piece.
