  • Before T. Krishnamacharya, the 'grandfather' of modern yoga, was employed by the Maharaj of Mysore to teach in his own Yoga Shala, he taught the Maharaj's family at this humble Lakshmi Temple within the grounds of the Mysore Palace.
Mark Whitwell, student of Krishnamacharya's son TKV Desikachar teaches his friend Martinique Nitzani on the smooth worn flagstones of this incredibly sacred and historically important site. Where so many feet have stood before.
This deeply devotional location reinforces how Krishnamacharya taught Yoga not as fitness, but as whole-body prayer. Not a workout, but devotional practice as part of a vast and well-developed spiritual lineage of tantric hathayoga, as evidenced in the numerous tantric texts cited by Krishnamacharya in his first book, the Yoga Makaranda.
May we do justice to the great gifts from our teachers.
