Despite this movie was a box office bomb, Pixar loved this movie so much that they hired the director of the Iron Giant. He eventually directed The Incredibles 1 &2 and Ratatouille
@@thelastshogun3913 He won 2 Oscar and these movies made millions of dollars. But I don’t understand why he didn’t make more projects with all the talent he has
It's unbelievable, but true. The movie only made about 31 million dollars even though most who see it agree that it's one of the best animated movies of all time. Part of the problem was that it was underpromoted. I didn't even know about this movie until years later and picked up the DVD for a few bucks and was BLOWN AWAY by it. I always recommend people watch it. So, so good.
Fun fact, Vin Diesel (Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy and Toreto in Fast & Furious) voiced the Iron Giant; and Jennifer Aniston (Rachel in Friends) voiced Hogarth's mom.
One of the greats in the remaining era of cartoon animation. This film is an absolute masterpiece and I'm so glad you both had the opportunity to experience it for yourselves. What an incredible film.
So sad they don't make them like this anymore. A charming, excellently written and executed western animated movie that anyone can enjoy, from 5 to 75.
Ellie and Michelle, it makes me so happy to see your reactions to this criminally underrated animated classic from my childhood. The movie's director, Brad Bird, made this in tribute to his sister who was killed by domestic gun violence from her estranged husband and his idea was 'what if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?'
I really don't like the idea of demonizing hunters. Shooting an animal in the wild is 100% more ethical than buying meat from a supermarket which most likely was harvested from a meat factory
People didn't hear about this movie because Warner Bros barely did any advertising for it. WB's previous animated movie, Quest for Camelot, bombed pretty badly, and so WB basically gave up on animation, not realizing how good Iron Giant was. So it took years for this movie to get proper recognition.
I've seen this movie hundreds of times and I can't handle the part: "You are who you choose to be" and the giant says "Superman." Brad Bird made this film in honor of her sister, who was shot and killed by her husband. He came to Warner Studios with this question: "What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?" This movie is a masterpiece.
Fact, Brad Bird the director of the Iron Giant, his sister was murdered with gunshots, and that inspired him with the idea "what if a gun was self aware and didn't want to be a gun?"
You know how good this movie is? It's been almost 25 years, I've seen this movie at least 15 times, I know he doesn't die at the end and I still cry EVERY TIME when he says "Superman..." 😢
immediately after the explosion everyone celebrates..... everyone except the general who takes off his hat and remains motionless looking towards the sky as a sign of respect to the iron giant
The dark truth behind this film is that Brad Bird went through one of the worst times in his life that sparked the thought "what If a gun had a soul and didn't want to kill?" His sister had been murderd by her husband when he came home one night and shot her. Brad Bird made The Iron Giant using that Trauma and he made one of the best Animated films to date, he would go on to continue making other films that are honestly just as timeless but this film is definitely I believe his most notable film.
Just too cute Ellie and Michelle! I really enjoyed your reactions to this animated classic The Iron Giant. This is such a fun movie and your reactions were a joy.
Hogarth saying grace killed me. 😂😂😂 "Um uh, oh my god, we uh thank you for the food that mom has put in front of us and STOP Uh the devil from doing bad things and uh GET OUTTA Here!!! Satan? Go go so we may live in peace Amen"
When he flies to intercept the nuclear missile and closes his eyes, saying "Superman!" it gets me every time. And then of course the ending... What an ending! One of the best animated movies of all time.
There's a comic called Kingdom Come where Captain Marvel (not Marvel Comic's abomination) who looks up to Superman saves him and some others in a nuclear strike. The ending is definitely different, but I wonder if the the book this was based off of and the comic didn't influence each other.
Fun fact for the animation nerds out there. That voice at 9:27 is Ollie Johnston, and the Frank he’s speaking to is Frank Thomas. The two of them are LEGENDARY Disney animators who had been working with the studio for decades. They also made a cameo in the Incredibles - another film directed by Brad Bird who directed the Iron Giant.
One of the things I really love about this film (in addition to being gorgeous and heartwarming and just damn good) is that it doesn't spell out any details. We know next to nothing about the giant, the military personnel, or even the town. And you know what? It doesn't matter! The telling of the story and the characters are so good, the rest of it fades away. I don't know about anyone else, but it doesn't take away from the experience one little bit.
"What if a gun didn't want to be a gun" That's the idea that made this movie possible, the director's sister was killed and he had a long meditation on his mourning that let this masterpiece to be created :')

This was the great animated feature, the other one was "October Sky," a semi-biographical tale of NASA scientist Homer Hickam Jr.'s high school model rocket days. "The Iron Giant" just soars across the screen, and deserved success and a possible sequel. But it's a great "one-and-done" story that Hollyweird doesn't know how to make any more.

Mansley was scared. Not evil or crazy, but scared. Sure, he was a bit up his own ass, and certainly not a pleasant person to be around, but his main defining trait seems to be fear. That's why he did all of the bad things he did. I can't see him as a true villain because of that, because we are all susceptible to fear. But if it makes you feel better, Mansley almost certainly got sentenced to death for what he pulled here. Launching a WMD at American soil will count as Treason, and that carries the death penalty.
While its never said on-screen, its implied that Hogarth's father died in the Korean War (which occured a few years earlier) & all they could recover was his pilot's helmet.
I saw this movie as a kid and it left a huge impression on me. I feel like If I ever have kids I will show them this movie too. I think its almost perfect as a movie and it deserves to receive recognnition.
I don't remember seeing it in the reactions, but the VERY funniest line in the movie is when Mansley takes Hogarth to the soda shop, and Hogarth secretly spikes Mansley's chocolate milk shake with Exlax. Mansley slurps it up happily, and says, "this is great, what do they call it?" Hogarth gives him a wicked side-eye smile and says, "Landslide!" Mansley spends the next few scenes clutching his cheeks. Oh yeah, I love you ladies!
Michelle, you were say you've never seen this story before - but have seen the Iron Giant - He showed up in the movie 'Ready Player One' in couple of pivotal scenes.
30:30 - They were cheering because the Iron Giant just saved them all from nuclear annihilation. Why does everybody always think they're cheering because the Giant was destroyed?

I understand the deer scene is sad but that life animals eat animals, animals eat humans. So hunting for food is fine but when you hunt for sport and a trophy that's a different thing altogether
In my mind, I created an after credits “Stinger”… Fade back to the Giant’s POV, running through pictures of the characters in the story, the image of Mansley is target locked, a map of his location appears… Cut to exterior view, the Giant lifts off, then dissolves to his landing, a small town in the middle of nowhere, where Mansley is “chief inspector of toilets”, the giant walks coldly over to Mansley, towering over him… and steps on him, squashing him into a fine red paste. Giant’s POV again, the image search shows Hogarth, pan out through the iris to a closeup of the Giant’s face as he smiles, and lifts off into the sky… Fade to black…
world peace!!:) for many years we’ve been in conflict and mistrust because of our own internal conflicts and interests colliding with each other and that all the external conflicts are caused by that!! so to help everyone, we must understand and really look at our own internal conflict to help the external conflicts subside!! so throughout history, we’ve been focused on saving ourselves and our own needs is that we haven’t been focusing on others and how we each can help each other!! this is because we’re wired to trust ourselves and only ourselves and with our own unique individual comfort zones that cause us to not want to change or be different!! to accomplish this together, we have to allow and celebrate our differences and be ourselves at the same time!! so we each can still have our own way of life and be happy with others who are different and every day have new and exciting ideas on how to have the world be more peaceful!! and we can slowly and at our own pace step out of our comfort zones and make a change in ourselves and encourage others, including our next generation!! because we all have the right to be ourselves and the happiest we can be and we can still have our beliefs and values individually and be with others, if we take the time to try and understand each other and then we can live in the world we’ve always dreamt of!! and we can or/and can’t do this

@@jonathancruz5932Calm down. I didn't say anything. I love Titan A.E. as well. It's just a shame that these movies didn't get the attention they deserved back in the day.
I Love this movie so much. Agent Mansley is a lunatic. The ending is very touching. However I've always been disturbed that writer chose to have the Iron giant eat metal. It makes no sense as he is made of metal. Didn't the writers realize they were making the Iron giant a cannibal. Thats disturbing Say it isn't true. I hope he doesn't eat any real nice cars 😅
The backstory behind this movie is sad. The director was inspired to make this movie when his sister was killed by her husband from gun violence. He then came up with the concept “What if a gun had a soul, and didn’t want to be a gun?”
If people don't kill deer, more children will die from car crashes and from an excess of wolves and other predators. If, for some disgusting reason, you care more about animals than you care about humans, then you can think about all of the dogs that will die from the excess of predators. She really needs a husband to give her a baby so that she can stop being insanely overprotective and irrational about animals. No, dogs are not even close to babies.
What did you expect, these girls are animal lovers. The group even got triggered when the pigs got slaughtered in a meat grinder in one of Jigsaw's traps in Saw 3. Go figure
@@SaRENRampaiger , I know, but they need to use their brains. Deer are wild animals that need to be kept in a balance or else other animals and even humans will suffer. I think getting shot is probably not much worse than being ripped up by a bobcat or whatever. It is very ignorant to suggest hunters are bad for helping the environment. If they want to protest factory farming, that's a different story. There's certainly much more room for improvements there.
This is not a movie. It's a masterpiece

@@jonathancruz5932Calm down. I didn't say anything. I love Titan A.E. as well. It's just a shame that these movies didn't get the attention they deserved back in the day.
When he says, "Superman" I always lose it. 😟😢😭
Im so glad you guys finally watched it! Ive been commenting forever about it on here and i knew you guys would love it!
Thats disturbing
Say it isn't true. I hope he doesn't eat any real nice cars 😅
You are what you eat. We humans eat meat and we are made of meat that doesn't make us cannibals
@@Esskroe I was joking for the most part, but good point.
So I guess it would depend on what type of metal he eats.
Criminally underrated classic
There's certainly much more room for improvements there.
just for the record, the movie only failed at the box office because of Tarzan
