“What if a gun had a soul, and didn’t want to be a gun?” - Brad Bird, in memory of his dearest sister Susan. He chose to not be a gun. He chose to be… Superman 🦸♂️ 😢😢😢
One of my favorite parts of the game Multiverseus was in the announcement trailer going thru the various characters and Superman says "This looks like a Job for...." only to be cut off by Iron Giant saying Superman?! Then Superman says "All right then, you're with me" and they fly off together.
Way to screw the movie's whole meaning and include this character that's clearly against violence in a fighting game. Long as nostalgia sells, I guess.
@MrWhatdafuBOOM OH don't be so cynical. It's only a party game with no bearing whatsoever on the movies characterisation or plot. You gonna tell me that Smash Bros. ruined Metroid because Ridley can wear a bunny hat?
I don't care how many times I see the movie, every time that sequence of quotes happens again... "I am not a gun" "You are who you choose to be" "Superman"...the waterworks, every time
LILO AND STITCH also shows a character designed to be a weapon who makes a choice not to be. Stitch causes a gasoline tanker to explode in order to propel himself up to Gantu's ship in order to rescue Lilo. He soars upward with one arm extended and one bent arm hugged to his chest... just like Superman.
For anyone who wants to know, one of the creators of this movie (writer, director, I can’t remember who right now) lost his sister to gun violence. His sister’s husband shot her and then himself. So he wanted to make a movie where “a gun chose not to be a gun”.
I think that moment resonates with grown men so much because we all wanted to be Superman as kids, so in that moment, this alien robot from another world instantly became relatable.
I know this scene is supposed to be sad, but it's also terrifying because in a deleted scene, the Giant has a dream about multiple machines like himself being sent to destroy worlds. That nuclear bomb only temporarily stopped him. If Hogarth really did die, Earth would be screwed.
He was what he chose to be. Not what he was made to be. Also, fun fact, firing or ordering fired a nuke without authorization is considered High Treason by the US Military. Mansley did so during a military operation and while the town was under martial law during an active combat operation. He was likely courtmartialed ON THE SPOT. And the penalty under military law for High Treason AIN'T life without parole. it's a choice between a length of rope or a handful of bullets and a wall to stand against... if he was not dealt with summarily there and then. There is a reason we do not hear from Mansley again. One way or another, he did NOT walk away from that town.
Wrong on several counts. Being responsible for the unauthorized launching of a nuclear weapon would involve several federal crimes, but unless it could be proven to have been done specifically to "aid or comfort an enemy of the United States," it would not be treason. Also, the town was not under martial law, which has to be declared by the president or a state governor...that only happens when the _judicial system_ of a region is non-functional. Military activity in a town does not automatically place it under martial law. Mansley, as a government civilian, will face several government charges that will be handle by civilian federal courts, not military courts-martial. Actually, not even if martial law had been declared, he would be tried by a special military tribunal...not a court-martial.
@@kirkdarling4120 Not military activity, military ACTION. An active combat scenario in a region automatically imposes martial law, governor's consent or not, as during combat scenarios regional judicial law outright cannot function or be enforced as normal. They were fighting the Giant, and the military operation had not been stood down. That made it an active combat zone, which goes under Martial Law by default. Second off, mind, he launched a nuclear strike on the US Army position unauthorized. Any damage or potential damage, to the US military done by such an action could be argued to be treason, as any damage caused to the US Army, intentional or not, does in fact offer aid to enemy forces. Mannsley attacked the United States with nuclear force after going rogue, and in the process would have done SEVERE damage to US forces. By definition: TREASON. Third off, everyone capable of doing a military tribunal, was standing right there. A tribunal doesn't have to have all the ceremony and pomp of a judicial court hearing, though it usually does, it can be done on the battlefield in five minutes if necessary.
@@GuukanKitsune not only that but he tried to flee afterwards…so would he also get charged with desertion too? And attempted theft of government property (the jeep)…hell wouldn’t he also get charged for disobeying orders?
I've always had the headcanon that Mansley was later prosecuted for what he did. You know, since he essentially fired a nuke at an American population center and all, that's not something you can just "get away with". Something else: Superman just goes into a healing coma when he "dies" usually, and I'll choose to believe that the Giant just absorbed the energy from the nuke and went into a healing coma in orbit

You could seriously write a psychology paper on the impact of this scene. If you notice, it seems to hit harder on male viewers.I believe it hits men harder because traditionally we are raised to be protectors and defenders. From a young age, we look to heroes. I’m sure in today’s culture, there will be people who disagree and consider it sexist to view it this way, but it’s pretty clear that the guys are more moved by this scene than the women.

I have never been emotional with any piece of Superman media,... and now this alien robot makes me bawl like a baby just by saying the word "Superman"
Now we need a reaction mashup to Iron Giant going apeshit on the military
He may have been built as a gun, but he became what he wanted to be... Superman!
As a kid the ending made me sad , as an adult and losing people this film breaks me , still one of the best animated movies in my opinion
Movies that make me cry every single time:
-Good Will Hunting
-Forrest Gump
-The Green Mile
