For a local, personally I always prefer the Malay version. They may not be big with lotsa fillings, but they just taste good and nostalgic. Ask the seller for a dash of sambal, it will taste even more sedap. 😁
U can also get freshly hand make epok epok at Eunos Malay Hawker stall for 50cts per piece. It does taste equally good and value for money. Another Malay stall are sell 3 types of epok epok fillings (curry potatoes, sardines and bean sprouts with chilli sauce). Another recommendation is Four Leaf Bakery Curry puff at $1.5/- per piece. Very nice puffy pastry fills with curry potatoes and chicken meat. I usually buy extra and keep it in the fridge and then toast in oven before eating it.
Malays born mid 80s and earlier call these epok-epok and johereans as well... Many sgporean malays from that era still do... Bt i notice in Malaysia, the name karipap is now favoured above epok-epok
That Indian curry puff doesn't do any justice for the overall review. The best ones are from Indian Muslim Bakery at 124 Onan Road in Joo Chiat. Also for Chinese style curry puff, Rolina at Blk 6 Tanjong Pagar Food Centre is very good and has been awarded Michelin Bib Gourmand.
Back in 1966, during my primary school days, I used to eat the currypuff sold by a young boy outside the Farrer Park Swimming Pool after every time I went for a swim. The fillings were not potatoes and curry but just plain beansprouts. It was eaten with chilli sauce and they tasted omphh!👍😄
romgozaimas, the epok epok(curry puff) that you eat, is call epok epok sayur. And it must be eaten with the home made chilli sauce. 👍👍 Very sedap seh! My all time favourite.
I always love the Malay epok epok especially the sardine ones. 3 for $2. Even in my teens, in school during recess time instead of eating noodles we always buy the epok epok from the Malay vendor. They had the bean sprouts type. Eat it with chillie sauce pumped into it. I also love the Indian triangular karipup.
Yes those with bean sprouts in them .. the Indian ones demand acquired taste , most come with potatoes skins intact though I'm very fond of some that have muttons in them.
My go-to curry puff (both sardines and potatoes) is at A&A Eating House along Sembawang Road. It costs 80cents each and is freshly made. You should try it sometimes. The stall selling them closes on alternate Mondays. Go early to avoid any disappointment.
There is a stall "Tanglin Crispy Curry Puffs" at Hong Lim Hawker Centre (second floor) selling Otah, sardine, and potato curry puffs. They are really nice. They used to be at Maxwell Hawker Centre but have moved there for a few years.
Yes, 1A should be one of the best in Singapore now. Old Chang Kee was also the best in those day when it was at the coffee shop next to Rex cinema in the 60's. They make the curry puff right in front the stall with auto roller for the deep fried...
I love that he had curry all over his face at the end. On my trip to Singapore I had one from Old Chang Kee and it was pretty good, though very similar to empandas.
Old Chang Kee's curry puff has gone down several notches in terms of quality. They have been busy opening new outlets and increasing prices while failing to maintain or improve the quality of the food that they are selling.
The Malay puffs used to be 3 for a dollar. They'd be sold by itinerant vendors near the escalators of suburban elevated MRT stations. I miss those guys.
For Indian curry puff, you should sample from Onan Rd, there are many types of fillings. The standard potatoes filling to the tongue-numbing and tongue-burning filling with chilli padi.
I remember as a kid, very young Malay boy used to carry a busket coming over to our kampung selling curry puff, they were delicious and it cost just $10 cents.
Strongly recommend Rolina’s curry puff as it has michelin bib gourmand. I used to buy from random mrt touters coz they sell dirt cheap... but not anymore. Old chang kee is nostalgic, I rmb when I was starving and my friend bought for me years ago 😂
1A's pastry is similar to Chinese traditional moon cakes. The thing with Malay stalls' curry puffs is that they can be very good or very bad, and even if you manage to find a stall that you find amazing they can taste different on different days.
Er Jie Curry Puff at the basement of Golden Mile Tower is very good, very good too. Crust is a cross between Malay and Chinese style, has a quarter egg and a nice chunk of chicken. Just heard they open another branch at ACR360 at Jalan Besar.
Malay epok-epok has other variations of fillings like epok-epok sayur (bean sprout and tofu filling, that you need to bite abit to create hole and pour the chilli in), scrambled eggs (its hard to find, I had to request my mom to make for me). Oh and the Indian karipap (the best is at Onan Rd) needs to be soaked in the chilli sauce until the pastry is soggy and eat it. The chilli sauce brings out the flavours of the karipap. Enjoy!
This is my all-time favourite snack, especially the purely vegetarian one for a good spicy snack... other snacks are just unrivalled !!! 😋😘😋 I am mouth watering already viewing those juicy puffs at this video ... 😆😙😆 Thanks Richard for making this curry puffs video ... 🙏🤗🙏
When I visited Singapore in December 2019, I stayed at the Intercontinental and there was a Tip Top shop near the hotel. And that was the first time I tried their chicken rendang curry puff. Oh my lord, that was the most delicious curry puff I have ever put in my mouth. I have had Old Chang Kee during my other trips but the Tip Top rendang curry puff is way better. You gotta give it a try if you haven't done so.
Richard! I WAS on a diet after all that Chinese New Year munchies. Watching your curry puff face off, I had to rush out to get some for myself. Now I have to start my diet all over again 😩😫😩😫 .....another good vlog, thank you 😊🙏
Enjoyed this. Im not a big fan of Curry Puff as I find it always absorbs all the moisture out of my mouth while eating it but the 1A filling looks absolutely delicious with its moist curry filling.

I love curry puffs too. Try the baked puff pastry style one from Swisslink Bakery at Sunset Way. They use real butter and no MSG. The deep fried ones are best eaten hot else they'll taste very greasy and unpleasant. The OCK ones are just not what they used to be.
the last one you should try it with chilli provided at the shop, and also its more dryer , there is also a similar rectangular one with potato and mutton. its definetly a different eating experience compared to normal curry puffs.
@@AsiaHikelopedia ahh yeah sometimes just look out on the counter they may just have a plastic squeeze bottle of chilli. But even without it, the mutton one taste pretty good, hope u get to try it sometime.

nice change from your usual video sir. can i recommend you sha zah confectionary at 105 joo chiat rd. they sell flaky rectangular karipap where you can select either lamb, beef, chicken, all comes with potato of course. they're good. you gotta eat it with their awesome sambal (not too spicy).
Let me introduce you a lesser known version of 'curry' puff. Instead of having potatoes or sardines as the filling, it is fill with bean sprouts. And you eat it with some type of watery chilli. You can get it from Blk 417, Bedok North Ave 3. Is a malay stall inside a coffee shop.
Now I know why it’s so hard to get them these days? I didn't even know about 1A and also not adventurous enough to try the others. I am only familiar with OCK. When I started to buy from them it was like 80 cents. Within a short span of years it is now like 1.60? I only buy it occasionally when the hawker food doesn't fill me
Great job. A video that I never realised that I was missing! I have also been a long time fan of Old Chang Kee. But have never tried 1A. Will need to fix that soon.

Hi Richard, i recommend you to try out AMK Curry Puff at AMK blk 722, it was opened by Tip Top Curry Puff founder relative before it was sold to ABR Holdings! They have another outlet at BIk 184 Toa Payoh Central also.
These are two more one should try - 1. Chinese stall at Hong Lim Food Centre. This stall is right in a corner, quite close to the famous Outram Road Kway Teow stall. I recommend Fong Dee's Curry Puff. One of the best! 448 Clementi Ave 3, #01-31 Also try epok epok sayur. That's the vegetarian version. Eat it with the sweet chilli that comes with it.
OMG, Richard, you made me hungry liao😁 When I was young, I could get traditional Malay Curry Puff at $0.20cts at my nearest Mamak shop. The ingredients is just curry potato. Simple and delicious LOL
never tried tthe epok but i fully agree with your ranking!! ock curry puff is very average but i still get it a lot as it is something u can never go wrong with, a taste that is always the same and expected!
I was a student at NAFA San San campus (beside the Istana) in the late 80s and use to buy Old Chang Kee curry puff from the original owner and his wife at the coffee shop across Rex cinema. I wonder if he is really call Old Chang. The puff were only 40 cents each and taste much better than the franchise version now. 10 times better! The skin is thin and every piece was hand made. When Old Chang Kee started to franchise, it was still acceptable. Only slightly different from the original. Now, I never buy from Old Change Kee . Skin is thick and edges hard like rock.
Curry puffs definitely qualify as comfort food apart from being a quick and handy hunger killer. Like all preparations the outlet from where you get it is very important unless it's a chain.
1A are great. Agree w ur rating. Gotta try epok epok ones. Btw, 5 puffs is equivalent to 100 rounds along East Coast park to burn off the calories. Lol....
Hi Richard, i too die hard curry.puffs lover, the oroginal rex cinema old chang kee was a classic fave back in rhe eighties until mass franchising. Muslim coffee shops and jndians make them widely and avail islandwide local joints as you have it. . I like the triangle ones occasionally. Tip top ones when i passby. You can give this a shot Richard, Richie's Crispy Puff 349 Jurong East Ave 1, Singapore 600349 Open 24 hours They have five different filling in their curry puff if I'm not wrong. 👍
I sense your presence at Bedok........ You should try cycling from east coast to jurrasic mile, its a popular route for cyclist, its a long journey though
Richard, would it be possible to consider doing video the various playgrounds in HDB estates, ranging from the very old to the latest. Thank you. Many like myself wondered the reasons what cause you to land in Singapore. For most is work related.
Have not tried the epok epok version, but would have rated the same as you. My personal favourite is the one sold at Clementi Central Market by a Chinese couple in their late 50s. I have been eating it since my school days which is 25 years ago.
Thank you Richard for showing a great example to pick up the paper bag that got blown away. We need more people like you. 😃👍🏼

Curry puff is changing all the from sandie to creamie chicken to durian we can do a lot with it filling !
The Indian curry puff can be eaten with the chili sauce that the stall might have provided. That will reduce the dryness of the pastry.
What about sardine puffs? Have you tried them? perhaps another 5-way taste test for sardine puffs.

I agree with your ranking! Good video.
Glad you enjoyed it
1A are great. Agree w ur rating. Gotta try epok epok ones. Btw, 5 puffs is equivalent to 100 rounds along East Coast park to burn off the calories. Lol....
I'm still trying to burn off the calories!
Old change kee everywhere have it. I will recommemd a curry.bun which is very good too avail at onsn road. Cheers Richard! Enjoyed this currypup snack adventure!
Curry puff is my all time favorite snack. Glad you like it. Maybe you can try other snack like youtiao.
I used to eat youtiao all the time in Taiwan. 鹹豆漿 was my favourite breakfast in winter!
I would recommend a new version of nice curry puff by A bakery shop called Huff & Puff
You can give this a shot Richard,

Old Chang Kee's chicken mushroom puff
It's ok, but I actually like a bit of spice.
Richard, would it be possible to consider doing video the various playgrounds in HDB estates, ranging from the very old to the latest. Thank you. Many like myself wondered the reasons what cause you to land in Singapore. For most is work related.

Changi village 2 stall curry puff
Have not tried the epok epok version, but would have rated the same as you. My personal favourite is the one sold at Clementi Central Market by a Chinese couple in their late 50s. I have been eating it since my school days which is 25 years ago.
Maybe u should try Han’s, those are baked using puff-pastry
