Warm greetings, Richard , it is really heartening to see Taiwan embracing South East Asian Food and i have nothing but admirations for their efforts , i do expect some difference due to certain supplies limitations like blood cockles for laksa and i hope to see more of such attempts replicated all over the world and to quote Andrew Zimmerns ' if it looks good , eat it ' 😂😂

Been to both these places, and they are both great. Along the road in front of Hsinchu train station there are more hole in the wall Indonesian places that are quite nice. The downside is that they have karaoke upstairs, and sometimes migrant workers get drunk and start a brawl, which can get a bit awkward because you don't know whether you should leave or just ignore the commotion and finish your food.

LOL "feed the hordes", staring us down seriously as you eat the nasi lemak, "sambal things" - you are too funny, Richard! All the food you reviewed looked so good esp the Filipino food! The price of the currypuffs though.. 😱😱😱
If you can get a hold of curry powder, coconut milk and frozen prata (and potato of course), it's worth trying to make your own currypuff at home! Can search UA-cam for easy recipe, make it vegetarian too! Oven baked is fine! (I do so quite often)

Migrants from different SEA countries have their own enclaves in Singapore and that's where you can find their authentic cuisines.
      Filipino - Lucky Plaza
      Burmese - Peninsula Plaza
      Thai - Golden Mile Complex
      Vietnamese - Joo Chiat (?)
Indonesian food like Nasi Padang, Ayam Penyet is literally in most hawker centres, food courts and shopping malls.

I never seen an okra (lady's finger) in Singapore's laksa before. The usual ingredients will be sliced fishcake, deep-fried tofu, beansprouts, cockles. And one most important key spice is laksa leaves, the taste will be missing if you don't put the leaves. To further make it more luxurious, I know some will add boiled egg, shredded chicken meat, prawns, and other seafood.
There were story that the old version will add "earthworm" for the extra umami. I never seen or ate that version before, so I have no idea how true...
I believe Mr Chee Kopitiam is quite famous in Taipei, as I do recall hearing this name multiple times on youtube by Taiwanese who stayed in Singapore before and looking for Singapore/Malaysia food back in Taipei.
I guess there will be those who want to argue which cuisine belongs to which country. But really, food is food, which will vary and evolve as human move from region to region. No need to claim complete ownership, as long as the food is tasty. 🙏

As a matter of fact you go to Chiangrai thailand today you will find a lot of them stil speaks yunan dialet and some are muslims also.

You can still find food in S'pore that u can't find in M'sia. To say S'pore food is from Malaysia is not totally true because S'pore used to be a British colony in the 1920s, many mainland Chinese migrated to South East Asia , some people settled down in Thailand, Indonesia,Malaysia ( known as malaya during that period) and some came directly from their hometown and settled down in S'pore. During that period before independence, the Chinese still considered themselves as Chinese (not Malaysian or S'porean) and had always wanted to return to mainland once they had earned enough money. Their descendants who didn't make it home ,settled down here and the food they ate were similar to those who live in other parts of SEA, since they were from the same origins. Many Chinese food we have today in fact originated in Southern part of China. The fact that the food we eat today are very similar in M'sia and S'pore is because we are so close geographically and many people (including migrants from India and Indonesia) have relatives on both sides. It was common for people to visit one another and they could have shared and exchanged recipes during their visits. S'pore was a free and busy port, and if I am not wrong, during the colonial period, the mainland Chinese had to land in S'pore port before travelling to Malaysia mainland. I am sure people who settled down in S'pore had the ability to create new dishes using local ingredients too. To say that all S'pore food are from Malaysia is not totally true and fair just because we were once part of Malaysia but the fact is we only joined Malaysia from 1963 to 1965 for less than 2 years.

@@kaiserlow652 Trying so hard to dismiss that Malaysia is indeed related to Singapore way beyond whatever names they used back then, huh. Making it seems like Singapore just happened to pop up overnight, and the Malays there were nothing but immigrants with same significance to the land with the Chinese and Indians. Don't forget when the Japanese landed, whose blood was being shed for DEFENDING their home? The Japanese targeted the Chinese due to them being migrated FROM a particular place, whereas the Malays died because Singapura is their HOME and of course they will be defending it to their last blood drop, literally men and women alike.
The British literally drafted Malay men all over Tanah Melayu to defend Singapura, since it is of the same status with Melaka, Perak, Kedah, Penang, etc in that they are part of the same place. Leftenan Adnan himself is from Kajang, and dying for Singapura won't be of any difference from dying for Kedah back then, because it is still the HOME OF THE MALAYS. And that was way before the independence of both Malaysia and Singapore. To say the history of the two countries counts only during those two years is totally a Chinese thing to say to diminish the Malay's significance to the land. SONS OF THE SOIL. Just because Singapore erases the label, doesn't mean the rest of us will forget and bow to the Chinese-washing thing you people love doing, like exactly at this context. One of your country's folklore is "Singapura dilanggar todak", literally about a Malay king as a villain and Malay boy as a protagonist. Does Singapore ever have any king of their own ever since the Chinese set foot on it? Of course not, so obviously from the folklore alone it shows who exactly has the tie with the land the longest, thus making your claim that Malaysia (see the word MALAY, there? need a clue why it is being called so?) doesn't have a tie to Singapore but for those 2 years a total bs. Stop erasing the Malays from Singapore history ffs.

If you like Singapore laksa, you should try Malaysian laksa. It is one level up. Don't just dismiss it as nationalism and friendly rivalry. Hahaha. Yes, in Malaysia we have okra in laksa but we use cockles (lots of it) instead of mussels, unless it's specialty laksa.

Just a head's up, you might wanna tone down the comparison of Malaysian food with that in Singapore next time. i'm a Malaysian & i don't care about the so-called 'war' between Malaysian food & Singaporean food (one fact though, there's hardly any local food found in Singapore that ain't of Malaysian origin to begin with) all that much, but from what i tell from having watched so many food videos with 'Malaysia' & 'Singapore' in them, what you did in the Malaysian restaurant is a surefire way of getting a war in the comment section between the hardcores from both sides, if there ain't at least one going on already XD

No need to get all hung up on it. Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, all three places have their own varieties of laksa, & he's not talking about origins to begin with. the guy just happened to remember the one from Singapore best.
