@@JackyVincentOfficial I use a software called Metronome beats. What it does is it allows you to adjust the no. of counts per beat. So, it also helps in odd note groupings. Once I think that technique is clean enough, I start playing with a backing track.

this is definitely gonna help me *A LOT!!!* i remember all the way back when you were in Falling In Reverse and i used to always say "i wanna play like that one day" and now that i play guitar(been playing for three years and two months now) i actually can! i just gotta practice a lot more lol. you've been one of my top favorite guitarists since i was 9 years old(when the fashionably late album came out, which is when my aunt showed me to FIR for the first time), and you're still way up there right next to Jake Pitts! between you and him, you two are my top favorite guitarists of all time. sorry if this got way off topic, but i'll definitely use this video to help me increase my playing speed! sure, i've been told to use this technique by a bunch of other people, but i was a bit younger when people were telling me this, and it didn't matter as much to me back when i first started playing.thanks to you, i can finally learn sweep picking!

One of the biggest things I struggled with is timing.
And one of my personal methods that actually worked or at least helped me, is practicing my rhythm pyramid on practice pad with a metronome on. Therefore I’m working solely on subdivisions.
After that I found that practicing on guitar with a metronome is much easier, less overwhelming, and way more effective.
And to be honest like you said there is no shortcut, it’s all about hard work and repetition.
I remember first seeing you play guitar solos a few years back while you were in FIR, they were so amazing and because of that I bought a guitar.
These vids were a great help!

After about 1 year of practicing using this metronome method, I noticed a huge improvement in the speed, rhythm and accuracy of my playing. The results are not immediately obvious on a daily basis, but it does take some time to notice improvement. This method combined with perseverance is the key. Thank you so much Jacky; you're awesome!
Hi from 🇬🇧 Jacky, so last week my daughter came in from a night out and said listen to this, it was the insane solo from The drug in me is you and I was blown away. I have only just picked my guitar up after a lengthy lay off so I’m very rusty and I thought “this could impress her if I could learn this” 😂 I’m 49. I hope there is hope for me to tie my fingers in knots and get is learned.
This is really great because everytime I try to sweep my fingers get jumbled up and my fingers automatically stops and won't let me move upward or downward, I'll give this a try,

-Question how did you got to the point where you dont count 16ths notes and be able to pick 4 times per beat? I have to count it, and i noticed when it gets fast in the bpm u cant count 1 e and a fast enough.
-how about doing all three gallops on 16ths notes fast? How is it done? By feel? I am talking about the 1~and a, 2 e and~, and 3 e~a.

Thanks! When you hit a certain speed counting goes out the window and it’s pure feel. So do note subdivisions. I use them purely to build technique. When I play really fast there might be bars with random note groupings like 13 or 7 etc. hope that helps! Don’t get too caught up on note subdivisions unless it is a means to an end or for something not super fast where you can actually count or feel it

Hey Jacky, great video! I'm having a lot of difficulty improving. I don't think I'm practicing enough, and your idea that "you're training your whole nervous system" is a nice bit of inspiration. I know that it took me years to get really good at sports, so I guess this would be no different. Also, I'm flexing a lot and getting tense when I try to do a fast scale run... So I need to relax. I hope Jacky doesn't mind if I add another comment. So, when you execute sweeps on the guitar you'll notice you can play "faster" than you initially started off with.
So, practicing at a 100 BPM for a while can make your fingers play like they were at 120 or 130 BPM. But, can you actually play at that speed with a metronome? Not really, I guess (at least for me and now I'm starting to practice with a metronome again). While your fingers are "loose" they aren't in control really. They are in control at 100 BPM because you've practiced at that tempo. Just cause they are loose doesn't mean you can skip ahead.
Furthermore, this is what the control is all about that Jacky mentioned.

Hey i kinda find it difficult to maintain my pick grip as it sometimes starts to getting off my fingers. Any idea how to hold your pick properly? And maybe any suggestion for pick sizes that suits for sweeping? Appreciate your video dude, i'm sure it helps alot for people like me 👍
I use dunlop mini stubbies 3.0mm, I would try something new maybe. There is no right way or wrong way to hold the pick. I hold the pick in a "wrong" way.

Imagine being from a successful band and still being humble enough to want to teach others how to play.
I'm only a intermediate player. I have a tough time hearing and feeling whether I am in time with the metronome. For arguments sake. let's say I have it set at 80 and I am tryin to play 1 note per beat on the metronome. That's fairly easy for me to hear and stay in time. Now let's say I'm trying to play 2 notes per beat. I'm still physically capable of playing certain patterns (especially a triplet pattern I've been practicing for a long time) fast and clean enough, but I can't tell if I'm at 2 notes per beat, 2.1 2.5 per beat etc. I'm just not hearing or feeling the rhythm. And the faster I go the more I feel lost in terms of the timing and feel. It's almost as if the metronome is irrelevant background noise to my playing. Any suggestions?
It's hard to teach this through a comment but for now try this - 1. Practice playing a single note per single beat at different speeds 2. While you're doing this, focus on listening to the metronome MORE than you listen to yourself. 3. Count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and when trying to play 8th notes. Good luck!

Hi Jacky, thank you for this beautiful lesson! I am definitely putting many hours a day into practicing with metronome but I'm excited to try this approach and see the results it will bring. Probably my biggest issues had been my really bad brething pattern (I used to breath from my chest instead of my belly, so I had lots of tension in my shoulders and neck) and overall tension. I am working usper hard on that and I have start to improve at a rate that I thought would not be possible. Do you have any advice to keep tension under control ?

Hii Jacky, i see your videos often an i like your playing way, and i have a question, its ok if i use the middle finger to hold the pick?
There is no right or wrong way in my opinion, everyone is unique =). I hold my pick with thumb on one side and index, middle on other. Hope that helps!

Great vids! Do you always practice with the distortion and echo on? Is there a reason for this? Do you have any videos posted of your practice without the effects?
I just like the sound of it! I want to sound more like a synth than a guitar. I usually take them off if I am practicing chords, intervals, etc, or anything that doesn't require distortion.

i can already do sweeps but there is a sweep section on a song called objective to harvest by rings of saturn at arounmd 1:17 into the song and i cannot play them up to speed and ive been practicing it for over a month now. i will try to practice to a metronome and see some results
I can play fast solo, currently into avenged sevenfold but never use metronome. I want to start using it but my biggest problem is subdivision. How can you tell the subdivision, everyone on youtube tells to break down the subdivision, but none of them tell me how. Is there any accurate guide?

I've been playing for years. And being honest with myself I'm not terrible, but I'm not where I want to be. My alternate picking. Ascending alternate picking in general needs some work. Is the metronome thing something that would help? I feel like I've learned a bunch of bad habits, because I was self taught.
I find it challenging playing a guitar scale at 60bpm using quarter notes is this normal due to how much time in-between clicks there is? Or should I bump the click up where I'm comfortable say 65-75BPM? Great video thsnks.

I can do 16 notes at 120 bpm but after that I begin to lose track. Meaning, I can't really keep track of whether I'm playing in time or not? Is there a way to overcome this?
You need to do it more times at slower speeds and listen to the metronome MORE than you're listening to yourself. Good luck!

Less weight on the front, alot more comfortable to play live, if you have to stand up for an hr or 2 straight it gets really heavy so it reduces most of the weight on the front end

Granted this is mainly for "sweeps" but I am wanting to sweep on the bass hence this helps me.
I was also able to transpose Stevie T's sweep lesson (ua-cam.com/video/2FRTPuf3dMk/v-deo.html) on the bass guitar and practice using a pick, and Jayme Lewis' (ua-cam.com/video/kskrazLDq1A/v-deo.html) w/ my fingers.
And I also do I-ii-V7-I's sweeps. Very efficient. I might get into different chordal approaches later.
Might also "steal" *ahem* borrow some of your musical phrases from your songs too.
EDIT: 3:46 Stevie T also mentioned the exact same thing by roughly saying, "it is harder to play sweep picking slowly than it is to do it quickly"

Do you have any preferred scales / arpeggios you like to practice with or is it just whatever springs to mind?
Dahlius learn as many as you can and then utilize them all over backing tracks. Then you will be able to shift between them with musical direction instead of worrying about. What scale you’re playing in. Hope that helps!
