I love the brightness on her voice… this metallic quality their voices have… not to mention all the care in the arrangements, all the instruments… everything in its place, everything in the perfect amount. Melodies and countermelodies so well bonded.
"Countermelody" is the word very appropriate here. Actually, Agnetha recorded her vocals in a very advanced pregnancy, lying on a bed. That's why her voice in this song is a little different.
We are quite lucky to have all these Abba films (recorded on 16 mm photographic film, not on video tape). The music video as we know it today wasn't a thing in the 70's. Back then they were regarded as promotional material that might come in handy - more of a curiosity than a necessity. Now we know that it was a stroke of genius.
This amazing song sounded even better live, there are a couple of live versions out there, the singing is absolutely exquisite there. Check out their 1978 Japan special (they ended it with a live rendition of this song with orchestra) and also there is one from Dick Cavett show, fully live.
I was 7 when this song was released and I remember, already at that age, feeling the gratitude infused in the song. Great music moves, and ABBAs music is very moving. The gratitude felt for their music is eternal. 🥰🙏 Thanks for the reaction! 🙏
Thanks for the ABBA. This was one of their favorite songs to pull off in a tight pinch. They could fall into this one with just Benny on piano and Bjorn on guitar and song every bit as good as here. It's from Benny/Bjorn first crude experiment at musical theater "The Girl With Golden Hair". They performed it on I think their 77 tour. The other songs are "I Wonder". "I'm A Marionette" and "Get On The Carousel". Like I said it was pretty crude and about a small town girl went for fame and became trapped by it. All the songs were put on albums except for Carousel which you can get a glimpse of in "ABBA the Movie". I guess most of them from pretty early on were feeling trapped by ABBA.
Thanks for a great reaction 😀👍 here is some suggestions ABBA :”Does your mother know “ and ABBA: “Hole in your soul “ Live in Wembley in 1979 . There is a high energy there
So so stunningly beautiful ♥ Gorgeous record by The Gods of pop. No no no they weren't not more simpler days then, it was much harder then nd Abba had to put up with a backlash against them because the music was so beautiful nd melancholic. They were way ahead of their time nd they set the standards for todays music.
This was the first of three songs in a minimusical. Thank you for the music, I wonder and I’m a marionette. After ABBA Björn and Benny made a musical called Chess
"Thank you for the music" has many interesting details There is a video report to Björn and Benny at 1976 Christmas time there the reporter asks them if they have a preview of a song and there they play the melody (without lyrics) of the future "Thank you for the music" how several already said "Thank you for the music" is the first song of the mini musical that ABBA performed on their 1977 Tour of Europe and Australia there it has other lyrics, which even mention 'John & Paul' (The Beatles) and Agnetha sings in Doris Day style The song is at the end of "ABBA The Movie" and is part of "ABBA The Album" with the version you did here and also with the Doris Day version. "Thank you for the music" it's a very special song for the blonde singer Agnetha she just came back from Australia shortly after she got pregnant with her second child When it was time to record it, she was in a very advanced stage of pregnancy, and to sing it she had to do it in a more forced position When you see her in each presentation, Agnetha's face seems to transform with joy when interpreting "Thank you for the music": her gestures, her looks and her pouting are unmissable "Thank you for the music" it was used as the last number of a TV presentation It's like an ABBA hymn and classic wasn't a single, but should have been the 3rd single of "ABBA The Album" After the success of "Chiquitita" in Spanish-speaking countries, ABBA also recorded it in Spanish and it was a great success in my country Argentina. And the ABBA album in Spanish language was called just like that "Gracias por la música" In my personal opinion "Thank you for the music" is in my top 10 of all ABBA songs, for good lyrics, beautiful melody and greatest interpretation by a carismatic Agnetha and it is the last live performance of ABBA, in that section sung almost 'a cappella' at the end of the last interview of ABBA in 1982
Right at the end of "ABBA: The Movie", they sing this song, "Thank You For The Music", and it is great! 😊💓♫♫♪♪♪. There is also a Spanish version........"Gracias Por La Musica" , on their "all-Spanish" album, of the same name as the song.
If you want a more odd Abba song you can try I'm a marrionette. It is part of the same mini musical. This is Abba doing "scary progressive rock". The girl discover her musical talent in thank you for the music. Leaves home in I wonder and get caught up in the music industry and feels like a marrionette that the directors push around.
FIRST TIME? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? SO HAPPY THAT YOU NOW ARE DISCOVERING THE BEST BAND EVER. YOU HAVE TO REACT TO THIS NEW ABBA TRACK: DON'T SHUT ME DOWN🤗
I recommend "The Visitors". It's from their 80s album "The Visitors"and way different. Sounds a bit mystical . BTW Simplicity, positive vibes, musicality means good melodies and arrangements may be outdated, but upbeat sound can lead to very emotional and uplifting songs. Seems that the autotune generation cannot deal with it anymore, 'cause they are busy with being cool and software generated songs. 🙃
good melodies cannot be outdated. since 1980s sound and groove became a priority over good melody. thats main issue in modern music. one note melody is common now in pop music. and modern music is way more simplistic than music of 60s and 70s if you take away all that fancy digital sound design and autotune gimmicks. even average disco song of 1970s was more melodic and musical than current pop.
I would love to se you react to the Sidney live version of Dancing queen. This is the video that finally made me realize why they where, and are, so loved. Just having fun together with each other and an audience of all ages. I know its a well known song but sometimes the small "imperfections" in a live performance makes you hear it in a new way. The song comes forward if you know what I mean. Cheers and thanks for the intelligent, warm and insightfull reactions!
This song is part of my 90's teenage years as it was used as the closing theme of TV show Chuva De Estrelas (the Portuguese equivalent to Stars In Their Eyes/Soundmix Show/Re Per Una Notte).
Agnetha hits some pretty cool high notes including a super high rock note in hole in your soul! Best seen live at does your mother know followed by hole in your sole line at wembley. Full of energy and rock
My favourite ABBA song. Amanda Seyfried does a gorgeous version over the closing credits of the movie Mamma Mia. You're right - having grown up during the 60's and 70's, I took for granted the embarrassment of riches on offer . . . Beatles, Beach Boys, Joni, Mamas and the Papas, The Eagles, and on and on.
I would suggest THAT'S ME by ABBA. It wasn't such a big hit like DANCING QUEEN or KNOWING ME KNOWING YOU, but perfectly written, arranged, and sung. One of the songs that I play most often. And as Agnetha (the blonde one) said, it's one of her most favourites, too.
I guess if your looking for suggestions well -- "Slipping Through My Fingers" is one of their non pop masterpieces. I think there is a live clip from "Dick Cavett meets ABBA" it's a little striped down mini concert they did in I think 81. I think the HQ copy is in stereo.
Yeah, Thank you for the music is part of the musical The Girl with Golden hair, about the dream of making music and the music industry (the haunting I'm a Marionette tells how the dream ends).
It is friendly, soothing and perfect! And dont be fooled, ABBA songs seem simplistic but they are not. A lot of ABBA songs are very complex. Different musicstyles in one song layers upon layers of sounds and melodies. After years of listening it keeps you hooked. It is not 1 dimensional
Frank, thank you for this reaction, you are quite an amusing 😉 and nice person, it was not the first time to me but I enjoy they music, lot's of memories...
ABBA have a few songs about your own relationships or about your own kids, like "Knowing me Knowing you", "One of us", "Should I laugh or cry", "Slipping through my fingers", "The winner takes it all", "When all is said and done" ....
Agnetha was pregnant and ordered to rest, but it didn't work out that way. ABBA had a record to finish. A bed was brought into the studio and this studio version was recorded while she was laying down. There are live versions of this song that I think are better than the studio version - and for Chiquitita too. If you consider to react to Hole In Your Soul - choose the live version from Wembley.
I don't see their music as comercial, it was simple and HAPPY times with perfect sounds and angelical voices. The funny thing is that they were critizided by other producers for ther success calling their music comercial....jealoucy ???? $$$$$ ????
Fun facts about ABBA: 1 - The band leader took a few years to release an LP because he thought it was absurd to have a table with eight channels and not be able to achieve the quality that the Beach Boys achieved with only two channels. Abba launched the concept of video clips. They gave so many performances that there came a time when it was impossible to sing live, so they hired a film crew and started recording in studio to distribute to television stations around the world. 3 - They after a while together formed couples, and after a while the couples separated and practically switched partners, the song "The winners takes at all" portrays one of those moments of rupture between them. 4 - After they split, Agnetha isolated herself in her residence, refusing to give interviews, even listen to the radio because she was afraid to listen to ABBA and relive the trauma. Now it looks like they're getting together again for a revival.
Trademark ABBA song. Anthemic. It was never released as a single but became favorite during ABBA tour in late 70s. Intriguing verses, touch of musical, great piano and uplifting catchy chorus. You may check out alternate version of this song by ABBA - "Thank you for the music (Doris day version)". quite ragtime-y.
The Visitors, Summer Night City, Does Your Mother Know....I Wonder (Departure)......The Winner Takes It All....One of Us.....If it Wasn't for the Nights....The Name of the Game....EAGLE (Long Version)!!!! You pick...LOL!!!
Knowing me Knowing you, I’ve been waiting for you, SOS, Fernando, Chiquitita. In live are more powerfull!! Does your mother know live in wembley is an example. Much more powerfull that the studio version. Another example is Why did it have to be me, live in Australia.
Hi Frank! As you asked for more suggestions of Abba music, I recomend you "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!". This song was sampled in a Maddona song. Greetings from Rio de Janeiro!
Thanks for taking on ABBA. Since you asked, let me oblige…He is Your Brother (from 1st album Ring Ring), Gonna Sing You My Love Song (from Waterloo), I’ve Been Waiting for You (from ABBA), That’s Me and/or My Love My Life (from Arrival), Eagle and/or Move On (from The Album), As Good As New and/or If It Wasn’t for the Nights…or pretty much anything (from Voulez Vous), The Piper and/or Our Last Summer (from Super Trouper), and finally Like An Angel Passing Through My Room and/or The Visitors (from The Visitors). Just my opinion, but any of these would be different than what you’re used to hearing from them and in that order you can hear the progression of their music.
"lovers (live a little longer" from the album "voulez-vous"....i can't remember other song from the abba catalog that can be qualified as ..."sexy"? lirically, at least. the chorus is very shouty, but on harmony....it's weird. (i love it, btw)
I'm not sure If you know but this song was released in 1977, the first tv show in colour was broadcasted in 1966-67 in Sweden. So I guess that in 1977 black/ white tv had been totally fased out.
Hi @CaptainValchiria! Did you mention musical? You gotta check the movie Mamma Mia! ABBA soundtrack sang by a great cast! Please, I beg you, don’t miss it! Cheers!
In an analysis of a music video, the analyst discusses pixels, cameras, and other visual stuff... :)) Anyway, because you used some musical terms like glissando, crescendo, calisthenics, etc., I give this review 8/10.
I could probably suggest you The winner takes it all, it was written while Agnetha and Bjorn were splitting and ending their marriage. I think they were very brave to record that song when they were actually divorcing.
Color T.V.s came out in bulk in the latter half of the 1960s, I know, I was there. Also, no pixels, T.V.s were analog not digital but you could get a look at the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in the snow when a T.V. was not tuned into a station. Yes we were spoiled, I was there when Elvis was introduced to the world and the Beatles and hard rock, psychedelic, punk, prog, indi and on and on. There has been some good, even great music since the 90s, but not very much, music seems to have gotten stuck and not progressed since the start of the 21st century. Maybe ABBA,s epic comeback will kick some asses out there and we will start hearing some great music again. Oh, I have been a musician for 60 years and am encouraged and hopeful that great and exciting new music is on the horizon.
I've been so lucky I am the boy with golden ears I want to hear the music with my body what a joy what a life what a chaaaance ..... , thanks Frank Oh and by the way I really appreciate you're enlightening flushing out of the illuminati , lol . Wohin wir gehen gehen wir alle
I am born in 1968, as this Song released in 1978 I did not liked it. I loved "Eagle" from "The Album" most. I have learned to love this Song in the late 80s or early 90s 🙂
You´re reaction is interesting. In fact this song was one of three ones that were part of a so called "mini-musical". And your point of view about black and white and color tv in the 70s might be true as well. I don´t agree totally concerning the music. It seems to be simple but it is not really. They managed just like the Beatles bevore to let their sometimes uncommon at least not vulgar chord progresses appear simple and easy.
I love the brightness on her voice… this metallic quality their voices have… not to mention all the care in the arrangements, all the instruments… everything in its place, everything in the perfect amount. Melodies and countermelodies so well bonded.
"Countermelody" is the word very appropriate here.

This song were actually a part of a ”mini musical” called The girl with golden hair, that they performed in Australia.
Let's go Valchiria, Abba... (Youth sweet memories 😎)
Man, I listened this song for the first time like this week LOL

it's a very special song for the blonde singer Agnetha

it was used as the last number of a TV presentation
It's like an ABBA hymn and classic
wasn't a single, but should have been the 3rd single of "ABBA The Album"

"I'm a Marionette", surprisingly (maybe not) has some Metallers following...
Since you are listening to the lyrics very carefully, you have to look at "The Winner Takes it All"! Really strong storyline.
FIRST TIME? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? SO HAPPY THAT YOU NOW ARE DISCOVERING THE BEST BAND EVER. YOU HAVE TO REACT TO THIS NEW ABBA TRACK: DON'T SHUT ME DOWN🤗
It's already been done.
Wake up, mate... :)

@@Mario-xr3jo Yes , it´s great to be yong , memory is part of our life .
Loved it. React to: ABBA - People Need Love. It was their first hit.
That was a minor hit, their first real hit was Waterloo.
‘The Visitors’ is a great song, and very different to the usual ABBA sound
My best one from ABBA .. is The Winner takes it all.. I reccomand that.. it's beautiful .. thnx
Olha! ABBA Cover em viola caipira brasileira, também, é belíssima

The Visitors, Summer Night City, Does Your Mother Know....I Wonder (Departure)......The Winner Takes It All....One of Us.....If it Wasn't for the Nights....The Name of the Game....EAGLE (Long Version)!!!! You pick...LOL!!!
From the mini-musical The Girl With The Golden Hair

In live are more powerfull!! Does your mother know live in wembley is an example. Much more powerfull that the studio version. Another example is Why did it have to be me, live in Australia.
Hi Frank! As you asked for more suggestions of Abba music, I recomend you "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!". This song was sampled in a Maddona song. Greetings from Rio de Janeiro!
Thanks for taking on ABBA. Thanks for that.
Amo ABBA!

Hi Frank i recomend from Abba "i let the music speak", "one of Us", "Soldiers", "the winner takes it all"
Haha, I love your comments. They are a bit odd but at the same time both true and interesting. Keep it up! :)
...and funny at the same time...
"lovers (live a little longer" from the album "voulez-vous"....i can't remember other song from the abba catalog that can be qualified as ..."sexy"? lirically, at least. the chorus is very shouty, but on harmony....it's weird. (i love it, btw)
If it wasn't for the night
The winner takes it all
Please, react to "If It Wasn't For The Nights", from Voulez-Vous album. Abba's disco era.

I had black/white tv in the 80's. It was still around then as a cheap alternative.
More ABBA please frank !❤️❤️😍
Try "Hole In Your Soul", "Move On" and "Take A Chance on Me" from the same album. the entire 'The Album' from 1978 is their best.
Honestly I didn't know what to comment but I'm always happy with a new video.🥰💕
Hey Frank..!!...another cool reaction, big 👋🏻👋🏻 for you from México city again...👍🏻👍🏻
So you have never heard “Thank you for the music” with ABBA before. Wow, that’s totally believeble.
Said no one ever.
Great reaction! You need to check out their song “Why Did It Have To Be Me!” I think you’ll like it!
I'd like to suggest "When All Is said And Done", "The Piper", "Lay All Your Love on Me" and "The Day Before You Came".
Thanks.
Hi @CaptainValchiria! Did you mention musical? You gotta check the movie Mamma Mia! ABBA soundtrack sang by a great cast! Please, I beg you, don’t miss it! Cheers!

I think it may well have been live music (not quite sure). But it could have sounded as good live as recorded in the studio. I saw them live in 1979.
In an analysis of a music video, the analyst discusses pixels, cameras, and other visual stuff... :))
Anyway, because you used some musical terms like glissando, crescendo, calisthenics, etc., I give this review 8/10.
I would suggest "Chiquitita", "My Love, My Life" and/or "The Winner Takes It All".

Maybe ABBA,s epic comeback will kick some asses out there and we will start hearing some great music again. Oh, I have been a musician for 60 years and am encouraged and hopeful that great and exciting new music is on the horizon.
And 80’s and start of to mid 90’s. 😉
Totally agree we were spoilt for choice, but I think more 70s&80s
Hi, you should hear "i let the music speak "
I've been so lucky I am the boy with golden ears I want to hear the music with my body what a joy what a life what a chaaaance ..... , thanks Frank Oh and by the way I really appreciate you're enlightening flushing out of the illuminati , lol . Wohin wir gehen gehen wir alle
I am born in 1968, as this Song released in 1978 I did not liked it. I loved "Eagle" from "The Album" most. I have learned to love this Song in the late 80s or early 90s 🙂

You can review: "Bang-A-Boomerang"
"That's Me"
I think the producer Lasse Hallström did most of the film work (not video...)
Check out "Hey Hey Helen" to meet another side of ABBA.
You made some interesting points 👍
You´re reaction is interesting. In fact this song was one of three ones that were part of a so called "mini-musical". And your point of view about black and white and color tv in the 70s might be true as well. I don´t agree totally concerning the music. It seems to be simple but it is not really. They managed just like the Beatles bevore to let their sometimes uncommon at least not vulgar chord progresses appear simple and easy.
en verdad suena como un musical de Broadway parece que Liza Minnelli saldra cantando de un momento a otro ..
Lasse Hellström used 35 mm film. Not video if my memory don't fail me.
Listen to "the winner Takes it all"😉
