EXTREME FLIGHT - Nolinor B737-200 Combi Gravel Strip Operation

- Join me on this Super Exciting journey onboard NOLINOR B737-200 Combi equipped with Gravel Kit to far North Canada. We are flying 4 sectors from Montreal Mirabel via Val-d'Or and onward to Meadowbank Gold Mine and back. The landing and takeoff at Meadowbank is on gravel so it is spectacular to watch!
The pilots explained all the features on this 37 years old B737-200 Combi with unique gravel kit installed. There are lot of good flying action in this video with primary focus on the operational perspective. Hats off to the hard working crew and those people work in remote places on Earth.
NOLINOR Aviation's B737-200 Combi is one of a few B737-200 equipped with EFIS (Digital) display in the cockpit.
I don't know why but to me the concept of a 737 casually landing in the middle of nowhere on a gravel strip is absolutly amazing.
I do not why either.

Silly jokes aside, respect for the job these guys do. Some pretty hardcore comercial flying there.
Agreed, but technically not commercial, it's a private charter for the mine.

This video is so entertaing and informative. Thanks for making it Sam!
Really cool to have a behind the scenes on such a unique flight! I love that the 737-200 is still going strong!
Is it just me or is the reverse thrusters just beautiful?
Back around 1979 I flew in a 737-200 for the first time. Nordair (no longer around) flew YUL to YHM. I was sitting just behind the wing, and was completely unprepared for those clamshells to open. For a second I thought the engine was falling apart! LOL!

This captain is very nice. Smiley, happy and humble

I get the impression most of these folks think Sam is blowing smoke up their ass, but by the end of the video they realize he's genuinely just stoked to be there.
....and still alive....? There isn't a US domiciled airline that would even entertain the idea of hiring this guy, NONE, NADA, ZIP....and with good reason. You're damn right I'm more than concerned if I see this guy in the cockpit!
Just so you know, I'm a student pilot in Montreal and a lot of folk heard story about Pascal (the Cpt). People said that he's really really smart and an incredible pilot. Real nice guys, so please keep it respectful !! ✌️
@@ricky.robert1196 .....respectfully.....you're a student pilot, in Canada, and this qualifies you to comment on on a commercial pilot's overall fitness/obesity, (arguably morbidly so) how? I'll concede he's a very bright fellow in addition to being a great pilot, because you say so....however, the facts, and the medical science are rather irrefutable: his health is compromised....and he's flying LEFT SEAT in a commercial aircraft!? EEE GADS, I'm checking out the person in the right seat before I buckle in!
Sam, can you do a plane review of Air Force One?
I wonder the same, too, since Sam seems to have flown about every plane under the sun and everywhere on the planet. That would be interesting proposal, but I doubt Sam would be allowed to sit in the cockpit during the take-off and landing due to security consideration.

Just wondering how the captain keeps passing the routine medicals.
Whoa! I didn't want to say it!!
Vincent Conti
It can be considered insulting but remember this is an early 737 with a negligible autopilot, and in the middle of northern Canada. The seemingly unreasonable objection based on a pilot’s health can make the difference between a plane flying and hitting the ground. Even is the copilot takes over that pilot will be guaranteed to be dead if hypothetical heart attack leaves him in critical condition. Over 2 and a half hours to get to the nearest airport could be considered normal in that territory.
@@lennoxl.j5313 chewing gum
I been fat my entire life, bucko. I'll compare blood work and test results with you ANY TIME. Never had a problem passing a flight physical. Being large does not automatically make one unhealthy. There's PLENTY of skinny people on deaths doorstep from following AHA and ADA dietary guidelines.
Fat does not equal unhealthy
People seem moee concerned by the weight of the Pilot rather than his skills which are commandable. Thank you Sam for an entertaining video
Kristian Sagia and quite rightly so, he's a heart attack waiting to happen. So as a passenger I'd be worried
I could not agree more. His is flying airplanes and the others are not doing anything worth noting .
Exactly!! There's really no need for cruel and mean jokes like that! If they knew anything about Aviation, you would know how brutally difficult it is to not only get one license, but to get 5+ licenses in order to reach the highest level of airmanship, that is airline pilot! Have some respect and acknowledgment for his accomplishments!!! Also, he's probably living a much happier, more fulfilling, more exciting, and more wealthy lifestyle then most people! So the joke's on you!
@Vlad Nelapsi actually, you CAN be overweight and healthy. There is no concluding evidence that being overweight is caused by unhealthy living and increasing evidence shows that genetic make-up might also influence weight quite a bit. Kind regards, a Public Health professional
that's because he is a walking time BOMB...!!! he is a wonderfull person and a great pilot but a health risk to himself and the safety of his passengers... would never get a medical like that in australia

When the capt hold his breath during the flare 😅😅🤣 nice video men
He is actually having to suck in the gut so that the co-pilot will have the full range of the control yoke. If he had to pull the yoke all the way back for some reason, it would hit his stomach before getting to the actual controls limit restricting the flying surfaces which could be bad in an emergency situation. 737's may be different, but in flying GA aircraft when landing you want to always hold the yoke as far back as you can upon touchdown which helps slow the aircraft as well as making the nose gear touchdown softly.

Back in the 90s I worked in Hassi Massoud in the middle of the Sahara. We used to fly the same combi configuration by Air Algerie
Also seeing the Arabic seat belt sign at 21:55 gives a clue that this plane in the past was with an Arabic operator as well.
In this case not Air Algerie but for Royal Air Maroc www.planespotters.net/airframe/Boeing/737/C-GNLN-Nolinor-Aviation/eO8guMNA
At 21:55 you can see the old No Smoking Fasten Seat Belt sign has a phrase in English, French, and Arabic. This is because when the plane was new, back in 1983, it was delivered to Royal Air Maroc. In Morocco Arabic and French are major languages.
The -200 Combi is a great plane, I used to fly on one in and out of Nome, Alaska back in the day when Alaska Air was still flying them.
Awesome to know!
Ah! Nifty, with the French signage you don't have to change anything to comply with Canadian regulations. Arabic's just a bonus then...
Thx for telling me, I didnt know why it was Arabic.
Michael Free I was thinking the same thing, especially since they’re operating out of Quebec.
Great video Sam, as usual. It makes me feel worried to read so many disrespectful comments towards Captain Pascal. He seems a good person and professional in his work. This kind of bullying towards other human beings should not have space in this channel.
No kidding. All the debate about the medical . . . He passed!
And considering the possibility of the unthinkable . . . a pilot has died of heart failure overflying the US. If memory serves, it was safer to not remove them from the seat at the risk of, say, bumping the yoke and causing an even bigger problem for the already harried first officer.
Though they are operating fairly far North, Churchill never looks to be all that far out of the way. The flight wouldn’t be allowed otherwise.
He can be the best person in the world, but his belly has to potential to cause an accident. The control yoke is connected on both sides. The first officer was unable to pull yoke any farther back due to the captain's belly. It is not disrespectful, it is safety issue.
Sam chui is always a stress reliever.😘😘😊😊😊

Most of the 737-200s today are in Canada since that was the only model that Boeing decided to install a gravel kit on
Can't Canadians afford some asphalt?
ryan olson you can’t do that in the Arctic. That’s why all the Arctic airports in Alaska and Canada have gravel
@@KanyeTheGayFish69 nope, it's cost. There ARE actually starting to page the DALTON highway, and there are some airfields with asphalt already.
It is just expensive and easier to maintain gravel. So thanks for trying to make me feel like an asshole over nothing.
@Joshua Gill🤷🤦 ya, they absolutely CAN pave in the Arctic circle, the choose no too due to cost and temporary nature of mining operations.
ryan olson I wasn’t trying to do anything, you just asked why they don’t have asphalt
I couldn't imagine landing that plane on gravel runway. Those pilots deserve some credit for doing that.
That's the biggest pilot I've ever seen. Even if he's proficient, that's a unhealthy condition at flight level.
Wow cool man I take this flight every 2 weeks since 7 years! I watch your videos regularly! That’s awesome that you had that opportunity! I work at Meadowbank since 7 years and love it!
Sam, I swear when they start operating schedule services to the moon, you'll be among the "first lucky ones". God bless you and thanx for your wonderful videos.
I love this video Sam your so inspiring!! I wish I could meet you in real life 😊😊😊
When I saw 737-200 Combi I said "finally Sam gets to sit on a proper economy seat" he ends up getting the 2nd officer seat in the cockpit. Sign I'll never win. 😊
There is no "second officer seat." The 737 has never had a flight engineer. He's on the jump seat.
@@prorobo why is there a jump seat in the cockpit?
eWorkx it's there primarily for observation of the crew and can be occupied by a company check airman during a line check, an FAA inspector, or another airline pilot trying to hitch a ride when the cabin is full. Before 9/11, at the captain's discretion, anyone could occupy the seat like a child visiting the cockpit in flight. Those days are long gone.
@@prorobo ahhh good to know. Thanks
The jump seat usually sucks so I guess your wish came true
What I want to know is how did captain pascal get in the cockpit chair with that massive belly 😂
v1pa lol but as long as he can fly
He is a big guy, but he can fly :)))
Here in Canada we don't call it a belly, we call it an aerodynamic centre.
Amazing how such an old aircraft can survive a routine like this for so long and then probably continue for another 10-15 years!
B-52/KC-135/KC-10 are also examples of old jets properly maintained and still flying. It is pretty crazy that some of these frames are older than the majority of people on the earth.
A lot of airliners (especially older ones) are kinda like bulldozers or tanks. They pretty much last indefinitely as long as they are maintained properly and do not surpass the max amount of flight hours the airframe is rated for
Called American engineering without the output of accountants, no wonder Boeing is having so much problems now, quick build aircrafts to save money costing Boeing a ton
A plane will fly no matter how old it is as only as it’s properly maintained
There are still DC3s out there working!
I thought the captain is enough to keep the CG forward, but no, they had to ferry a friggin conrete brick in the cargo room!

Sam, thank you so much for taking this trip and sharing it with us. I flew on this type aircraft from Anchorage to Galena, Alaska in 1979 and 1980 when I was in the Air Force.
