    Hey all, just wanted to add a note here since a few people have reached out to me on Twitter about part of this video. I wasn't aware that Jacob Chapman and Kinley Mochrie had come out as trans since To Boldly Flee, since I never saw a video made by either of them before or after I saw this movie. I would have addressed that if I knew, so I'm sorry for any confusion.

      Roger Ebert (whom, ironically, Doug Walker idolizes) once said “One rule of comedy is that it’s hard to be funny when it’s obvious you’re trying to be funny. Great comedies take their premises seriously and the laughs flow naturally.” And that right there is one of the problems with Doug, he only focuses on being funny.

      @@temin2776 Alright, let me explain why people are calling him a bad person. Recently most of Channel Awesome's left the company. They released a massive file documenting their reasons. Among them, their CEO is a misogynistic asshole, and Doug and Rob are incompetent when it comes to business. The producers weren't paid for the movies, and they weren't even provided with food or water during production. As it turns out, the CEO was also aware that a deceased former producer, Jewario, was a groomer and did nothing about it. Most people's issue is that Doug hasn't stepped up. He hasn't apologized, he hasn't left, so it makes him look guilty by association.

      I'd heard about the scandal, but I still didn't know how much of it was Doug Walker's fault. But did he really never say anything about it? Never apologized? Never explained what exactly happened? It may be strange, but it hurts me that other people speak ill of him. I've heard that he's a good man. I've watched a lot of episodes of "Nostalgia Critic " and I really love this show. Even if I don't agree with everything he says about movies, his point of view always makes me think. He always admitted his mistakes, even if it was unpleasant. And he is really a very talented person who has inspired many reviewers.

  • @Vossenator
    @Vossenator 4 роки тому +86

    The Hocus Pocus "review" is when I pretty much closed the book on Nostalgia Critic. It wasn't even a review, just a long, boring and unfunny skit. The worst part is that when faced with backlash and criticism for that "review" Doug's response was childish and unapologetic. He basically said: "Well, I made it the way I wanted to make it if you don't like it, don't watch it." That's when I realized who Doug was and the nostalgia glasses came off and I saw Channel Awesome for what it was, a shell of it's former self.

  • @eschw2444
    @eschw2444 4 роки тому +274

    You can really tell that Doug has trapped himself in his own purgatory of the Nostalgia Critic. He doesn't want to do it, but it pays the bills, and he lacks the skill and talent to make original content. He's the epitome of critics just being failed creators. There are ways to show copyright footage on UA-cam for reviews but Doug isn't interested in using that in a transformative way because he wouldn't be able to shove his Saturday Night Live wannabe skits into his videos. It's the closest thing he can have to his Demo Reel. And it's almost sad because here's a guy who wants to be creative but he's so creatively bankrupt.

    • @a.c.slater7989
      @a.c.slater7989 4 роки тому +42

      The thing that's crazy is that he could always just cut out the goofy sketches and just make normal reviews and do other content on the side. The biggest problem is the production value is through the floor and theres nothing entertaining about his sketches for the most part.

    • @Silver_Warden
      @Silver_Warden 4 роки тому +42

      @@a.c.slater7989 I think the problem with that approach from Doug's perspective might be the fact that barely anyone would even watch his skits separated from his main reviews.
      Him shoving them into his reviews is basically a form of false forced self validation. Doug knows that people want to watch his reviews, and he uses that to shoehorn the skits. When people respond to a new review more or less positively, he channels that response and makes himself believe people enjoy his skits just as much.
      Reality is, of course, not the same. Most people probably skip all the skits or suffer through them to get back to the meat of his reviews. But it's not something Doug wants to consider, or rather, fully acknowledge to himself first and foremost.

As Ross points out, Doug is just not self aware even though he seems to think he is.

    I know most everyone else has pointed this out by now, but years after making To Boldly Flee, in 2019 Doug- I mean "Nostalgia Critic" said that Pink Floyd - The Wall was too long. The Wall is an hour and thirty-five minutes long; To Boldly Flee is three hours and twenty-nine minutes long. @@joannamarieart Same here. I always thought to myself that if he didn't either improve the quality of the skits or just quit the skits entirely, that it was time for me to leave, and I'd been a fan since 2008. But the skits just kept getting worse and worse, making less and less sense, which made me think if doog was ever really funny in the first place, or if we were all just young and dumb back then, or were just too bored to watch anything else at the time... those skits were usually the WORST parts of each and every review. But then, they just started being less review, more failed SNL/MadTV skit, so I couldn't watch anymore. After seeing his review of The Pest, the horrible movie with John Leguizamo, (not the name of doug walker's autobiography), and seeing the JAR Media podcast, reviewing doug's shitty movies, and that's when I decided to stick with IHE, his brother, and his friend, over dog walker's lame attempts at "comedy". Plus, if you have to make choices like IHE over Nostalgia Critic, The NC loses that decision EVERY single time. And we all know Alex is a much better youtuber than doug will ever be. And James Rolfe does Doug's job better. Even if James is still friends with Doug, it really only shows how nice of a dude James is. Doug needs a lesson in humility, and so do bradican and doug's equally as douchey brother, rob. There was a small time when i thought that maybe one day, doug would be worth watching again, but I realize the odds of that happening would be a 100,000,000,000 to 1. But luckily, the people who weren't up their own ass left the site already,(like Todd, Lindsay, Linkara, the Rap Critic, or my personal favorite, AngryJoe), or, like the esteemed and legendary Guru Larry, stayed for shits and giggles. I'll miss the days when I was 15, and enjoyed Doug's older reviews, but he's just not fun to watch anymore. And definitely not as funny, if he still is, or hell, if he ever was... and the increasing number of awful, rejected SNL skits just keep on getting worse with each episode, and with every failed "review". It's embarrassing. Did anyone besides doog like those skits? Like, anyone at all, unironically, I mean? Because I can't think of a single person outside of doug himself that liked his boring, awfully unfunny skits. Goodbye CA, it was fun for awhile, but along the way, things got worse and worse as more and more people left, and began sending out documents about how awful the site truly is, and how awful Doug is as a person, and as a critic. This is one bridge, I'm glad to burn, the one between myself and CA. Because they haven't been funny or fun to watch in years. It just took me a while to realize it. Thanks, JAR Media!

    Don't feel bad about liking this schlock when you were 14 - I was even worse. I was a junior in college when I discovered the Nostalgia Critic, and I was instantly hooked and thought he was a comic genius. I don't care for bathroom or sex jokes, but I used to think his references to pop culture were funny. And I confess, when I originally saw To Boldly Flee, I loved most of it. I'm a diehard Looney Tunes/Tom & Jerry/Buster Keaton/Three Stooges/Abbott & Costello/Laurel & Hardy fan, and for better or worse, I could still sense their influence on Doug Walker. Plus, I have very minority opinions on many things in pop culture, so I felt satisfied affirmation when he shared my viewpoint. I don't care for The Matrix, and I hate Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, so when he expressed disdain for them, I loved it.
    Over time, though, I have found myself disagreeing with Walker more and more. Some of his opinions are inconsistent or just make no sense, like how he criticized League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for being all talk and no action, but criticized Van Helsing for being all action and no character development, and never properly elaborated on how and why they failed to find the right middle ground. I found myself skipping certain new reviews because I already knew I wouldn't agree with him. I also found his criticisms of certain filmmakers to be in poor taste (i.e. joking that Anna Paquin looks like she's farting every time she cries on camera) or just downright wrong in some cases (i.e. calling Emmy Rossum a bad singer even though she actually is a professional opera singer IRL). I stopped turning off Adblock for his videos when CA issued the phony non-apology, and then I had an epiphany when he got to "X-Month" last year - not only did I fundamentally disagree with his overall assessment of every film he reviewed that month, but moreover, he has officially reached a point where he'll have one mildly funny joke per half-hour video. That's not a productive use of my time. So, I'm a real late bloomer to the party, but I too have officially outgrown the Nostalgia Critic.

    I think this is why Doug's earlier work was so much better than before his ego started to grow. It was "Movie-joke-movie-joke" punchy observation that built on what we were seeing, and while it wasn't exactly clever the formula was technically sound. My professor said, "Every successful script basically looks the same when stripped down."

    Want to know the craziest thing?
    Not only was Lewis Lovhaug (Linkara) able to create better visual effects (both practical and CG) on a significantly smaller budget, but he completely succeeded with his own movie versus what "To Boldly Flee" failed to do.
    The film made us care about the characters involved, which thus allowed us to become further engaged in the narrative. Sure, the narrative itself was obviously influenced by elements of Star Trek II and was primarily focused on Lewis' characters and lore, but he still took the time to ensure that the other characters had some time in the spotlight and served the story, as opposed to making them all Linkara clones who spout unfunny pop cultural references.
    It makes more effective use of the continuity of both Lewis' own work and the leftover "plot" elements from the previous anniversary movies, or at least moreso than Doug or Rob ever bothered to do so. It wasn't just a game of "Hey, try and guess what we're referencing!"; it felt much more cohesive and honest with what it was trying to do.
    It was also one thing that the anniversary movies never could be; FUNNY. I wouldn't say it was laugh-out-loud hilarious, but most of the jokes that were present in the film still got a little chuckle out of me and they didn't wear out their welcome by going on for too long. I also didn't find myself cringing at the few jokes that I didn't make me laugh.
    And at least I can also take comfort in knowing that Lewis is a genuinely nice dude who takes his time to listen to what people have to say, versus Doug and Rob who constantly shrug off any form of constructive criticism with a laugh and snobbish arrogance.
    Great video, by the way. Sorry if my rant was a wee bit lengthy. Keep up the good work, mate.

    I like how Rob Walker apparently kept leaning on the "plot hole" whenever someone pointed out something inconsistent, almost to justify laziness, but after a certain point, pointing out and making fun of how bad and stupid what's going on is just results in a bad and stupid movie, and I don't think Rob realized or cared about that. Neither did Doug, for that matter, especially given that yeah, you ARE supposed to care about these characters, so it's as if the movie is telling us not to be invested but also to be invested.
    But I guess that's what happens when you make a movie within one week and quite literally make stuff up as you go along.
    I also like what you said about the "Nostalgia Critic" not really being a character, it's often his go-to defense when people call him out on this or that action he takes in one of his reviews. But even then, now more than ever, it feels like Nostalgia Critic is less of a character, but just Doug Walker wearing a tie and hat who screams more.

      A part of why they seemed so good at the time, other than that we were simply younger and less sophisticated, was because of the novelty. There was nothing else like it. The idea of people on the Internet having some kind of cinematic universe is an interesting idea on paper. The idea of seeing your favorite reviewers go on an adventure at all was considered worth watching all on its own. Remember, this was pre-Twitch, pre Tik-Tok, pre-Vine. Twitter was still relatively new, with limited functionality. Even with the Internet freeing a lot of people, there was still a lot of gatekeeping by today’s standards.
      Today, ANYONE can instantly make a video and post it to one of many platforms. The Internet evolved. The beginning of any medium is filled with a lot of experimentation and awkwardness.

    • @Warriorcats64
      @Warriorcats64 4 роки тому +3

      I don't think they were all that devoid of substance at the time, and the themes touched upon weren't actually wrong, and frankly if he had just ended there for good I'd have more respect. Even if the material of TBF wasn't good as a result, I could've respected some attempt to do something with a bit more depth and meaning than the usual fare...which Kickassia and The Brawl lacked [which tbf have aged well because of it]
      But alas, he ran out of material [or doesn't really hit it often enough to justify a watch] that he actually had anything to say, he had no subtlety at all to those very themes, and despite the bluster he ultimately caved and brought The Critic back...but it truly wasn't the same.
      I was exiting high school when he hit big and already halfway through college when this came out, so I can't say that I was some manipulated and crying or whatever, but there did feel like a good finality to it all...but wow, did all that blow up when Demo Reel failed. Ironic how everyone there got out quickly and he's still there.

    • @thematt523
      @thematt523 3 роки тому +3

      Possibly a mix, but I think way more of the latter. As Ross said in part 1, Doug seems to be incapable of engaging with art other than just referencing it explicitly and then changing just enough to fit whatever weird plot line he also likely ripped off.
      Doug seems incapable of “homage”…the anniversary movies have premises that are not terrible on paper, and he could have easily made them with similar plots and themes with clear signs of inspiration from movies and media he loves. Hell, that’s exactly how super-famous directors like Spielberg, Lucas, Rodriguez, Tarantino, and Anderson made their mark. And essentially every director does that to some extent. But Doug WANTS you to know he’s referencing something he did not make. Some of the time he doesn’t even KNOW much about what he’s referencing. He had never even watched Cowboy Bebop, and JesuOtaku had to help them rewrite the script because their version of Edward was not even close.
      Doug seems incapable of creating something “new” from what inspires him, like how most artists should be. Even when Demo Reel stopped with the terrible parodies and tried to get serious, the serious moments STILL were basic rip-offs of other movies or real-world events in the movie world.

      Be glad it wasn’t Disaster Movie, cuz that one is somehow much worse than Epic Movie.

    To Boldly Flee and Suburban Knight honestly remind me of those old terrible “parody” movies like Epic and Date movie. Where all the jokes are just pop culture references or acknowledgements of things that exist.
    But at least those movies knew they were terrible and didn’t try to care. Imagine if one of those movies demanded to be taken dramatically seriously and you would get Doug Walker.

      Yeah, me too, even though I know what movie they're referencing, that one dude's trying to make a reference to, it's still slightly funny(not the actual reference from Shitty Doug Waker Movie 3).

    14:29 THANK YOU. Nobody else in their reviews of CA's content has said this. I suppose it's more of an opinion, but still, I 100% agree. The "Nostalgia Critic" to me was always just the name of the show, and Doug just called himself the NC while wearing a typical outfit. And the "character traits" were just anger, rage, and unpleasant expressions.
