Using a Spinning Rod to Catch Bass on a Fly

  • There are times when a fly just catches more bass than other methods. Not everyone wants to go out and buy a fly rod for those situations, so here's how to effectively fish a fly on your spinning rod.

    Outstanding video Peter! I've cast flies with my spinning rod using a bubble float to supply heft; never thought to use the bullet weights to get the fly deeper in the water column

    Great video for those of us that fish faster water using streamers. Typically I use a three way to get the streamer to the bottom. Now I want to try a bullet weight instead....

    Definately going to try this method out! I’ve used a similar tactic where I tied the fly to a spinner or stickbait...but the amount of times you get hung up is unbelievable! Super effective way if fishing on those lazy days when you don’t want to spend hours of casting a fly rod!

    What knot are you are you using to tie the braid to the 1st tippet ring? Also could one skip the 20lb mid section and just do braid to tippet ring to final leader??

    • @hooked4lifeca
      @hooked4lifeca  4 місяці тому

      I'm using a UNI / Grinner knot to tie the braid to the first tippet ring. I like using some hard Nylon mono or Fluorocarbon for the slider section to prevent wear on the braid, plus it restricts the weight's movement to that 6" or mono.

    what is the length of the leader and tippet?

    • @hooked4lifeca

      2' to 3' usually. Longer the rod, the longer the leader we can use.

      I'm not sure what you mean by "fly clip" but if you're referring to a snap, then yes, it would be no problem to use as long as it was a small one.

    Great video! So you have your braid, then a heavy leader for the bullet weight to slide on, and then your tippet? How long is your leader, in total, from the braid to the fly? Sorta like fishing a Carolina rigged plastic it looks like?? Thanks for sharing.

    • @hooked4lifeca
      @hooked4lifeca  3 роки тому

      You're right, it's very similar to a Carolina rig. The length of the rig is dictated by the length of the rod and the wading situation. I try to go with as long a setup as the situation will allow. The heavy mono or fluorocarbon section is usually a foot long or less. The leader is usually light fluorocarbon (8 or 10lb.) and as long as I can comfortably cast given the length of the rod and the wading conditions.
      I carry the bullet weight setups in clear plastic pouches with the weights labelled. I can change the rig while I'm out on the water, if I have to. I carry spools of fluorocarbon (tippet spools) with me so I can change leader lengths on the go.
      One change I've made to the bullet weight section. The upper connection remains a steelhead tippet ring, but I've gone to a ball bearing swivel for the lower connection. I've found that certain flies will spin if retrieved too quickly and that spins up the braid, so the ball bearing swivel handles that problem.
      I also fish this rig with soft plastic swim baits.

      @@hooked4lifeca Hi Peter, do you think braid has more rotational resistance than the swivel? I expect the braid will twist before the swivel rotates.

    • @hooked4lifeca
      @hooked4lifeca  2 роки тому

      @@ralphnicosia-rusin966 Good question. A cheap swivel will spin up the braid, but a good quality, ball bearing swivel will prevent the braid from spinning up. I've tried both and the difference is significant.

    • @hooked4lifeca

      I don't use clear bobbers. I'm using bullet weights to get the fly down.

    Peter, just getting to building this rig. I have a spool of 30lb hard mono having difficulty tying it to the tippet ring, any suggestions on what type of knot to use? I only use the hard mono on my tying bench to make weed guards or mono eyes. My Wearmer flies are tied up and ready to go, lol. I noticed in the comments that you changed out one tippet ring for a ball bearing swivel, what size swivel are you using?

    • @hooked4lifeca
      @hooked4lifeca  2 роки тому +1

      Are you using trout or steelhead rings? The 30lb. mono should have no difficulty being tied to a steelhead ring. I switched to a ball bearing size 0 or 1 swivel as some flies will spin when retrieved quickly. It solves spinning up our braid.
      BTW, I noticed that when this rig fouled on a cast, it was always on the top swivel, never the bottom one, so going to a ring on top and a swivel at the bottom did not increase the fouling risk.

      @@hooked4lifeca Peter I am using Steelhead rings. Never tied knots in hard mono. Just looking for good knot for use with hard ,heavy mono. Out of my wheel house with that stuff. @@stevetrybalski3082 Ah, OK. Use a three turn UNI or Grinner knot (same thing). Use pliers on the tag to really synch it tight. I tie all of my heavy saltwater mono (up to 50 lb.) using this knot and it holds provided I've really pulled hard on the tag to lock it in.

    • @hooked4lifeca
      @hooked4lifeca  4 роки тому +1

      I have not used the technique, but it is common in Canada as a centre pin method for steelhead (migratory rainbow trout). These anglers will use roe, beads, jigs or flies suspended under a float.

    • @gordiev8692

      @@hooked4lifeca saw the technique on a fishing trip I took to the Moy many years ago.
      Consists of a bubble/float that you partially fill with water on the point of your leader. Leader has 2, sometimes 3, salmon flies tied along its length. Cast upstream and across in a riffle, slowly reel back in. The dudes I saw using the technique caught a bunch of sea trout that day.

    I think fly rods and reels are the most difficult way to fish. A lot of flailing about to make one càst. Spinning set ups make the most since.

    This is 😊fake. Just because you use a fly rod blank to build a rod does not mean it will cast a fly. Just a secret you should know is it is the fly line that allows you to cast a fly.
