    Ninh explains - The rules of Speedway. This is a surprisingly popular sport here in the UK as well as Australia & Europe - even though you never hear about it.
    It looks boring, but once you start watching races - it’s actually very interesting!
    Special shout out to my local team: the Belle Vue Aces for this footage.

      I respectfully disagree. They're both different disciplines requiring different skills to be good at. I can ride a bike, but I know I couldn't do either sport very well. They're different animals bro.

    I love watching Speedway! Due to it's relative obscurity here in North America, I only really watch it when I'm in Hungary, and will watch it whenever it's on TV. I'd love to attend a race or two irl, especially a Polish Ekstraliga race. I also heard that Speedway is considered to be one of the polish national sports too!

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  6 років тому +4

      Yes I believe so. The Polish are really good at this and I wouldn't be surprised if someone told me that this is their national sport.

      @@NinhLyUK It is the most popular sport in terms of stadium attendances (except national teams) and the Polish League is considered the wealthiest and best in the world. But I wouldn't say it is the national sport, in terms of popularity among society I'd say that football, volleyball, athletics and ski jumping (yep) are more popular. It doesn't help that Warsaw doesn't have its team and this sport is absent in some other areas.
      In Europe the motorcycle speedway is popular also in Great Britain, some parts of Scandinavia, to a lesser extent also in some areas of Germany, Czech Rep., Russia, Latvia, and the teams are present also in a few other countries. There are also international competitions, in particular, the Speedway World Cup, Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway European Championship. Speedway is also present in the US and there are some good riders from there.
      One particularity is that because there is no major international club competition like champions league, many riders start in 2-3 pro leagues, so for ex. one day they are in UK, another in Sweeden, and yet another in Poland :D
      Anyway, I was surprised you made this video!

    Back when I was in H.S. My motorcycle mechanic teacher was friends with Bruce Penhall. He was able to con the school into letting us put on an exhibition race on the track around the football field. Bruce brought down some fellow racers. That was one assembly that no one ditched.

      Cool thing is that lot's of American speedway riders, who are practically unknown in the States, are very well known in Europe. You mentioned Penhall, and I'll add three other world champions: Sam Ermolenko, Billy Hamill and the evergreen four time champion Greg Hancock! Hancock has been around for 30 years now, and won the first of his four titles in 1997, and the last in 2016 at age of 46! An absolute legend. Now, all these Americans are all from California, so I assume there must be some kind of speedyway culture over there.

    • @jswaggart01
      @jswaggart01 5 років тому +1

      Usually this only occurs directly after the start of the race or “heat” when the four riders get to the first corner. It is the referees decision to allow all four riders back because of “first bend bunching”. Only very occasionally will a rider be excluded for causing the race to be stopped. After the riders manage to get around the first bend cleanly, if there is a crash (singular or a multi rider crash) then the referee has to decide who was to blame for the crash and that rider will be excluded from the re-run. These are pretty standard rules now.

      There are also Test Matches which are team competitions between two countries. 6 riders plus a reserve on both teams usually contested over 18 heats, each pair of riders race in 6 separate heat races.
      Individual meetings like national championships and world championships are always 20 heats involving 16 riders plus 1 or 2 reserves. Each rider races in 5 separate heat races.

      If you need to stop to avoid a fallen rider, you put the bike into a slide and allow the bike to basically fall on top of you so that you are sliding on the dirt on your ass. Hard to do on the straights but it is a requirement to getting your license that you can perform this manoeuvre, which you are normally trying to avoid doing.
      Also the engines are very high compression and the moment you release the throttle, the bike begins to slow down very quickly.
