Found this video very helpful! It's one thing for educators to say "this is what makes a photo 'light and airy,'" and another altogether to watch you work through a variety of examples, explaining why a particular one works or doesn't work. The principles will stay with me so much more effectively this way. Thank you, Kirk!
Awesome, thank you!
Great work on this video. Great foundational info.
This is legitimately the most useful light and airy tutorial I've ever watched. Which does make sense as Mastin is the gold standard, but still, big props.
So glad to hear that! 🙏

What style of editing do you suggest for baptism photography? ( dark environment)
That is a great video, thak you!
Thank you for watching!
This is so s os so helpful. So would you say to stay away from 35mm to achieve airy?
35mm is perfectly fine too! It depends on the subject matter and posing :)
Can you do a video of light and airy with studio photos? Thanks for this, it was super informative!!
Thanks for the feedback!
I didn’t catch the part where you explained why the photo has to be backlit? Is that because you push the exposure up?
The main reason we recommend backlighting for a light and airy look is that it provides soft, even illumination on your subject. When the sun is behind your subject, acting as a rim light, it creates a beautiful glow around them. Critically, it also means your subject isn't being lit from the front by harsh, direct sunlight.
This backlighting, especially when the sun is low in the sky at around a 45 degree angle or less behind the subject, bathes them in soft, diffused light. It's almost like the world's biggest softbox! This'll give you a great foundation for an evenly lit, glowy portrait.
In contrast, front lighting from the sun can create hot spots and dark shadows, especially on faces, leading to a harsher look. Side lighting can be dramatic but tends to split the face into a very bright and very dark side, which goes against the soft, airy aesthetic.
Backlighting is all about the quality of light it provides soft, even, and flattering which is perfect for a dreamy looking photo. The pushing of exposure in the edit is a separate step, and not directly tied to the backlighting. But pushing exposure cab help achieve the bright, airy final look. Basically it helps to have a good foundation of soft light to start with.
The only exception is when backlighting is combined with other attributes like a busy background or non-neutral wardrobe and then, backlight alone isn't enough for the light and airy look. Hope that helps! :D
Very helpful
So glad to hear this! 🙏
great video it really helped me to understand the process to get that light and airy look, however I am a wedding photographer trying to find my style at the moment and as much as l like this look i feel it can only be accomplished at certain times of the year summer or spring when you have the sun and that light to work with so for someone like me who is trying to find a consistency to my photos I don't think this look will work as well when I'm shooting a wedding in the winter for example. with this preset bundle you have to rely on the weather and the wardrobe colours etc. that being said I still take a lot of photos in that light so I may purchase the light and airy to use with my other work but so much with weddings as I think it will fail in the consistency side of things.
You made need Portra Original or Lifestyle Everyday for the winter part of your work. Light is so crucial for the Light & Airy look.
@@mastinlabs thank you I now own them all. 😃
Wonderfully informative video! Will definitely look for others. One question as I have been looking at preset-related videos lately: Why does nobody say anything about luminance slider and sharpen. It seems to me that the first thing you would do is take care of luminance for noise and then apply some sharpening to the RAW image before applying the preset. Obviously, I must be wrong!
If by luminance slider and sharpen you’re talking about noise reduction, I’ll tend to either use that on a case by case basis or as a last step in the editing process as not all photos need that application. In each of our packs we do have a dynamic noise reduction preset tool that you could apply to each and every photo you want! As far as sharpening goes, we made a video that touches on that subject and I’ll link you to the exact timestamp in that video ua-cam.com/video/bYuDmHkSUBc/v-deo.html
Hope that helps! Cheers!

Thank you very much! I just so happened to see the video where it was addressed.
Cool shirt
Thanks!
does it include camera settings, like shadow, highlight, film simulation etc?
Yes!
hello sir can i used this method on my sony a7cii camera? thanks for your answer :)
Absolutely!
What a fantastic tutorial, thank you! There is one final pressing question, though: Where does one find that amazing shirt!?:)
I made it :) We may have it for sale again at some point!
@@mastinlabs Please do!
When you apply the preset do you apply it at 100% or adjust it?
100% but of course, you can adjust to your preference :)
Amzing bro. Can you share that camera raw Preset, please. I’m using a Nikon D850 camera ft Tamron 24-70G2 lens ( a light and pinking lens)
Referring to the photo where the family is sat on the road. You say shoot at f2.2? I'm thinking shooting at f2.2 will give an unsharp photo? With the kids moving around and faces on different focus planes? How do you get sharp photos with these conditions at f2.2?
My question exactly.
You just need to make absolutely sure that your subjects are in the same plane when shooting them. Keep them in a straight line facing them dead-on.
what file sir raw or jpg ?
is it applicable to nikon
Yes! All of our preset files are universal :)
Is there a checklist for each pack of presets? How to shoot for each preset or each style to be more effective? Thank you in advance for your answer.
Shoot at normal exposure. There is no benefit to shooting under or over exposed to get a light and airy look as you can further adjust exposure in LR.
RAW only?
RAW works best, but you can edit JPGS too with some adjustments.
What is lens correction?
Lens Correction corrects the vignetting and distortion that some lenses can give images :)
May be it is just me but i can not see where to choose the camera maker for the presets. I may have a generic preset?
The new versions are unversal and no longer require choosing the camera.
Sir I'm using Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8, Is this still qualified on the Lens preference?
Hey there! Do you mean, is this a Lens that is compatible with Lightroom? If so, yes I believe it is :)
Hi, where can I buy light and airy presets?
The presets featured in this video are the Fujicolor Original Presets.
www.mastinlabs.com/products/mastin-labs-fuji-pro-pack/
this vid isn't "how to", i think they are presets show by you.
"No there is no good preset in the world that can do that..thats worth your time.." mastin dude. Later he shows off with the presets..bingo..!!
Yes!
If you want a light and airy style is it best to take photos in the forest?
It really comes down to light. Low-in-the-sky backlight is the building block and you can find it in the forest or a field or nearly anywhere.
What about file from sony camera?
Thank you for the suggestion!
Where can I get the preset?

Hey man, how to add emojis on lightroom preset name?
Copy and paste the emoji into the preset name when you rename it :)
Will you have a dark & moody video?
Yes. We have one scheduled for November 26, 2019. Find the entire schedule here: facebook.com/pg/mastinlabs/events/
light & airy... for those who go aperture priority and dont know how to use ocf
people think an expensive camera + lens and presets will get you cool images; fail! It has to do with how you shoot you images
True!
