My grandmother bragged that she worked on the UNITED STATES, she was a Lather(insulator) in the ship yards of San Francisco before & after WW2. I did some work on the "Carl Vincent" air craft carrier 1980, it's terrible working down in the belly of a ship,,, NEVER AGAIN! She was tough as shoe leather. I love you grandma & I miss you so much.
I traveled on that ship in 1964 from New York harbor to Le Harve ,France. Our car was shipped with us , they put it on the dock, we got in and away we went. My sister swears she saw Salvador Dali on the dock looking for his art coming from the US
A true feat and symbol of America's engineering and industrial prowess at this time period. This ship was an absolute marvel. Because of how fast she was, the designs of her propellers, engines, and boilers were kept state secrets for years following her construction
Not all the pics in this video were from the SS United States. I took that trip from NY to Europe when I was 6 years old. There was no pool on the deck. The pool was below, it was rather deep and small in a small room. I too wish it would sale again. It was magnificent.
Three-and-one-half days to cross the Atlantic. Given the choice of avoiding the horror airline travel has become, I wonder if enough passengers who aren't on a schedule would chose to travel by ship rather than air to make it worthwhile to run a ship back and forth. If it were done in 3 days and comparable in price, I bet so.
Spend the money to protect American history. Let SS United States sail again with proud and happy people aboard enjoying important history. Don't lose this historical ship. Future generations depend on you to value United States history
I'm 64, sailed on her when I was 4 & a half yrs. old. Just saw her in a Colin Firth movie...started having flashbacks! Why is this not part of the Smithsonian?
Thanks very much QUEEN GENIA OVER ALL UNIVERSES for lovely words!! I didnt knew of this ship, its great and so sad no its almost dead, full of asbestos. Have a wonderful day and terrific start in the weekend, kissssss, yours judie:)))
When trying to convert to a cruise ship the inspectors wouldn't allow the steam turbines--claiming they are too dangerous. But the ship was in service for 17 years without accident..
The asbestos was abated when it was towed to Russia. If you look at the bare wall structures there’s no place for any to be left behind. They were very thorough in the removal process.
@@junescales9552 then it wasn't the s.s.United States, it must have been another ship because the Big U really didn't have an outdoor pool. This looks like a Celebrity cruise ship which we're talking about.
3516diesel You are likely right.....I was just a six year old and that was my memory. But I definitely swam in a pool on the Big. I remember being startled that the water tasted salty! Lol. Thx for the input😁
Have heard so many musical themes dedicated to the SSUS. MY personal favorite would be the evergreen Jazz staple 'If I Love Again" as rendered by Donald Byrd, from the album 'Byrd's Word' 1955, later titled 'Long Green' on the Savoy record label. Captures the modern artists' approach to the design, and 'how could anyone neglect to include Miles Davis's rendering of 'My Ship'. Both PERFECT in my opinion, as opposed to 'hayseed' songs far removed from thoughts of the sea, and cutting edge technology of the fifties, with a home port of New York nonetheless. Many 'missed the boat' on appreciation of proper representation of the Big U in context, and in its element, musically. After all, The Duke, (Ellington) sailed first-class on the SSUS, and is never, if hardly ever mentioned among it's luminaries, and dignitaries; just another sad testament as to how racialism and racism drags humankind backward.
Asbestos. There are two asbestos minerals--Chrysotile and Cristobalite. On is a radioactive carcinogen and one is not. I'm not going to tell you which one. Look it up yourself and tell me which was the most common variety used in most building material.
Had they not gutted her interiors to get rid of the asbestos, maybe they could have at least made a museum/hotel out of her, like they did with the Queen Mary. Sadly, I don't think there is a reasonable hope that she will be saved from the scrappers. It's not economically feasible to restore her. I heard a figure of 700 million to 1 billion to get her seaworthy again. That is really too bad, as she is an important part of history.
Sixteen comments and not one about the SS United States? Hey CATWITCHjudie, don't know where you get off posting false information. The SSUS has absolutely NO ASBESTOS on board. It was stripped off along with her beautiful interiors. Can't believe you care about the ship without knowing a thing about her. 62 years later and she's still the fastest in the world. Can go 20 knots in reverse, faster than Titanic could going forward.
I am sorry but i really didnt knew of her, but i am interested in her and was enthused when i heard of her, i have informations by wikipedia, i know its not always correct but excuse me, how can i knew whats correct,i am not an expert at all? Thanks very much for your comment, much appreciated!
CATWITCHJudie If your really interested I host a Yahoo group called "SS United States Maritime Group". I'll try and include the link, but don't know if UA-cam will let it attach. Otherwise, go to Yahoo(dot)com, search in "groups", and put in the words "SS United States". The group membership is former passengers (myself included), former crew, three famous maritime authors, a businessman who currently plans to buy her, the Philadelphia harbor pilot who moved the ship to it's present pier and the grand daughter of the ship's designer. We are on the cutting edge of news about the Big U. Regards, Scott J groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ssunitedstates_maritime_group/info
I joined in dear Scott,Thanks again!!! Will get familiar with this subject, very honored you invited me!!!----- A good weekend, regards from Germany :)
CATWITCHJudie Hello Judie, the honor is all mine and thank you for joining. You should find some interesting posts if you scroll back through the comments section. Some interesting recent photos too. I made a crossing aboard the SS United States with my parents in July of 1968 from NY. We were bound for Southampton, England for a vacation through Europe, but can remember when earlier on the last day the ship stopped in Bremerhaven to let off passengers. For me it was a sad day knowing that my time aboard was coming to an end. Earlier, across the rough North Atlantic for five days the SSUS plowed ahead at an unbelievable pace. For me every ship I have been on since has felt incredibly slow. The wind over her decks from her speed was so strong that deck chairs would blow off and my sister and I could lean forward into the wind, almost horizontal to the deck like a down hill skier. What an amazing vessel, plus first class service like a fine old world hotel! Cheers, Scott
PLEASE can some billionaire restore USSUS back to her former glory? She represented America! Bloody Trump wouldnt even miss a few million neither would Elon Musk or Bill Gates 🤷🏻♂️😢

Went to England on the QE2 in 1998, 5 days of fun. Came back 15+ hours on a Jet, no fun!

Irene xox.
it is so sad that the government doesn't step in and take care of the ship with its name on it. so sad.
Richard Whytsell because the people don’t want them to. If they did the people would all hand over 3 dollars each and it would be saved
I am in love with the ship for the frist time

The United States of America needs to buy that ship and revamp it and bring the old ship back to its Glory
AMERICA, PLEASE, PLEASE SAVE THIS HISTORIC GRAND LADY OF THE OCEANS!
I'm 64, sailed on her when I was 4 & a half yrs. old. Just saw her in a Colin Firth movie...started having flashbacks!
Why is this not part of the Smithsonian?
Oops, late nite "Collen Ferrell" my bad. Still, seeing the ship, and it's sad state...frack, heartbreaking.
An incredibly great ship.

Wish a great and cool evening too, it will get much hotter unfortunately :-(
Cu soon, love and hugsssss :)))
Reminds me of the ending of "Titanic," where she goes back & sees the ship as it was.....
You`re most welcome, dear Judie :-))
Yes, it does, over here, too, starting tomorrow :-((
Irene.
Get the ship to cammell lairds to get the work❤
That looks cool, but I would rather travel slow on a cool ship, not fast, so lets slow it down guys and hop on board.
Some of those pictures are not the S.S. United States.
Example: She did not have an outdoor pool 1:52
James Crawford I would disagree . As an army brat (age 6) sailing on her en route to Germany, I swam in an outdoor pool.

Can’t the Walt Disney Company come in and save this ship???

At the end they wrote ''she is full of Asbestos''. I hope she can still be safed and cross the Oceans and Sees again.
It was removed. The uploader is incorrect.
YESSS; MAYBE ITH THE "SLOWBOAT TO CHINA", lol, Thanks so much my dear Ava :))
