    to whomever left the comment about being annoyed at me breaking down the intro riff as 5/8 + 7/8 instead 12/8. The riff is phrased in two sentences. Breaking up into 5 and 7 allows you to realize that. Yes, it adds up to 12/8 but it's not expressed that way. Also, saying that breaking it up like that is too "proggy and complicated" is silly, especially when you want me to break down something as 13/16!! Silly rabbit.

      You're awesome man. Most likely, they're just trolling anyway.

    • @ociroid
      @ociroid 8 років тому +7

      That is exactly how you do it anyway if those guys complaining studied proper rhythm theory. It's always about breaking everything into groupings especially on accents. You find it a lot in Jazz, Fusion, Classical and just about everything. :D And this is exactly what you displayed very nicely. :) Awesome lesson, btw.

      Boom, man! You do you because it's wonderful. I know you can't say it here because there's actually something at stake, so I'll say it for you: Fuck em

      I thought it was a great breakdown of a complicated song. Certainly made easier to layer/record with your description. I mean... it’s Tool! If someone was looking for an uncomplicated breakdown to a band that uses the friggin Fibonacci sequence as a backbone to songwriting, then why did they bother searching for a lesson on it? This isn’t creed you dumbasses.
      I’ve been playing for 20 years and this band confuses and encapsulates me in the best of ways. They make musicians feel like they are back at the starting block... and that it’s time to learn their ‘new instrument’. This is a good thing.

      If they know so much, why the hell are they watching a lesson, if they know then play it. Silly internet people.

    Hi Gregory. I'm fighting depression and Tool's music is helping me a lot at the moment. I just wanted to let you know that learning the epic riff(s) in the beginning just made my day! Thank you very much! All the best from Frankfurt/Germany.

    I am a drummer and i think this is a really good explanation of this song and how you have to build all the pieces up together, it comes a little bit more easy and have much sense when you try to learn the song for the first time on drums.

    Just found out about this guy. Amazing, that's all I can say. Anyone learning how to play guitar should take advantage of his knowledge. I wish I had this as a kid. Good job on all of your videos. Huge fan. When Adam jones really started to impress me on the release of Anema it would have been great having these videos at my disposal.

    Man I've only been playing for the last three years or so, but I've wasted so much time searching for the holy grail of TONE...I realized that I just need to sit down and learn this song regardless of the shittyy gear I have...Guess what, now I can play the whole song from start to finish!! I fell like a million bucks!!! Thanks for the lesson!

    Right now, you're like my favourite person on the internet! I've been practicing this song for 5 years now but I always did the open chord strumming part after the solo wrong. I've also seen a lot of people do it wrong in all the Schism videos online. Kudos to you and thank you very much!

    With in the HD Pro I can assign the expression pedal to control the Amp's drive knob. I also use a volume pedal a lot. Guitar-Vol. Pedal-Amp. That should work great (behaves like your Vol knob on gtr) if you can't assign the expression pedal. The one I used is the only Agile I've played. Great build. I've heard really good things about their 8 strings. I'd say buy with confidence. Check out the new Ibanez Iron Labels as well.

    You definitely went to school for music, right? I'm soon to graduate with a music degree, its easy to tell when somebody is at least knowledgeable as to the classical manner of thinking. You've either studied somewhere or studied music extensively on your own, for sure. Great video. I'm teaching this piece to a student and will have him refer to this when he's practicing on his own time.

    Brilliant Lesson, thanks so much! Also, for those finding it hard to follow this due to speed, I suggest you play the song alongside, get the rhythm in your head then see how he's playing it and pause as he moves from section to section. Once you have a feel of each section, watch the video again or the playthrough and you'll be able to keep up :)

    I didn't watch this video when I came out, as I had been playing it for 10 years and "knew the song". Last night I was practicing at lower volume and noticed my way didn't sound right on the verse and started moving it around, eventually landing on 5th fret of the D string which was way easier than what I was doing. I was hitting the open D, then catching open G on the same stroke and hammering on A and Bb. Hard to do that consistently and easier to make mistakes. Should've watched this video, lol.
