FLY FISHING MISSOURI | THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TROUT RIVER | HOW IS THIS THE ONLY ONE?

  • Missouri is well known for its abundance of both woods and water. With thousands of miles of pristine rivers throughout the state, it blows my mind that this is the only one. The Eleven Point in South East Missouri is the only river in the state designated as a National Wild & Scenic Rivers System. This massive body of water is home to some of the best blue ribbon trout and smallmouth fishing in the Ozarks. This was my first time ever making it down that way, and I must say that I liked what I saw. With this only being a day trip I only saw a fraction of what the Eleven Point hides in her emerald waters. I am already eager to make my way back.

I have fished the 11 Point River for trout since 1974 and the dark trout you held up at 11:28 was likely the 'wildest' fish you caught up to that point. The longer a trout stays in the river they get darker spots and a deeper shade of red on sides and gill plates. When I caught and cooked a few of those fish the flesh was actually very pink to red colors sort of like a salmon and had a different flavor from the recent stockers whose flesh was mostly white or grayish color. I think the darker color comes from eating the wild insects, crayfish, etc. that live in the 11 Point river. I also fished the wild parts of the upper Current River below Montauk down to Baptist Camp and those fish never seemed to get as dark as the 11 point wild trout or stockers that had been in the river for a couple of years. I did enjoy catching Brown Trout in upper Current River and I wonder if Missouri has ever considered stocking Browns in the 11 Point, I think they would reproduce there even better and further down the 11 Point than the Rainbow Trout would, since in Arkansas Rivers the Browns seem to survive warmer, less aerated water better than Rainbow Trout. I really enjoy your videos and plan to subscribe to see more.

Good video, well put together, when I wade fish that river it's usally around the Greer access at hwy 19 upstream from the bridge and right under the bridge, a lot of nice fish in that area and occasionally some decent smallmouth. I think the easiest section to walk in and wade is the Thomasville access where you can wade for miles, but it's the warm water portion of the river and you're going to be catching smallmouth instead of trout. It would be cool to see you make a wade fishing video for smallmouth on that river.

You must be travellin thru that corner headed back. Glad to see it and I think thats the first time Ive seen you work down water instead of up it. I caught one that size last week at Maramec State Park. I dropped my nymph in about 3 feet of water, watched the 17" swim up to it and set the hook when he took it in. Took me back to parish picnics with the magnetic poles and rubber duckies. I hate some winter fishing.

Many moons ago while clunking along in a ginormous Coleman canoe strapped down for a three day ride with three compadres we accidentally found a small spring that poured into the Eleven Point around this area. The river bottom there was covered with trout. You could literally put anything over the side and pull out a trophy sized slab. I marked the location on a GPS (Which I had recently bought after getting seriously lost while backpacking inside the Irish Wilderness surrounding this river. lol) and later lost the waypoint in a hard drive crash. Never to be found again. Lol I grew up backpacking, floating, and fishing southern Missouri and northern Arkansas with my friends. I'm 48 now and we're still at it. The Midwest has many gifts for those willing to endure a little hardship to extract them. Hell yeah! Carry on my wayward son. Leave me some trouts when you are done! 😂😂😂
