I love the subliminal message that Rixia is indeed a waifu
She certainly looks good in that wedding gown. Alisa has always been my favourite waifu in these games but she sure will be competition in this game. I just hope I’ll have time to finish the other games so I can play this one. But I have so many games in my back catalogue and so little time.
Laura here
@@anaveragegamer359 Laura is awesome in Cold Steel. She is very strong so I always wanted to have her in my party. But I got more of a BFF vibe from her than waifu but she is still great as a friend.
RIXIA BEEN A BADDIE BRO!!!
@@anaveragegamer359 Based Laura enjoyers. I'd spare with her any day. (I am an active practitioner of kendo)
The Trails series is JRPG heaven. I admit I'm getting a bit old and some of the tropes are a bit cringy but there's a lot of heart in these games, so much character development, you really get rewarded in the end. Not only that, the battle systems are some of the best in the genre and they get better with every installment.
i first discovered it on psp emulator with the first 2 trails in the sky games and have been hooked ever since. it quickly became my favorite rpg series ever.
my only complaints are they make the game too easily exploitable and there are hardly any deaths. it's silly that there are these huge epic battles occuring and nobody ever dies. there was so much opportunity to add a lot more emotion into the game.
even when olivier "died", it wasn't even a surprise to anyone that he wasn't really dead. if there had been some actually deaths like that earlier in the series, then they could have surprised everyone with olivier's return.
as for the exploits, i've seen multiple let's plays where the player would delay lock the toughest bosses in the game, to where they literally never even got a turn. not sure why anyone would want to play like that, i play it a certain way to try to keep it decently challenging.
despite those couple of major flaws though, it's still my favorite rpg series. the characters and world building are second to none. can't wait to get into reverie, looks amazing.
@@Jack_80they do fix this and give justification on why certain important characters in Trails don’t die.
@@timidalchemist8475 nobody dies, i've played every trails except for sky the 3rd and there are like maybe 3 or 4 deaths total throughout all of them. that's being generous, i can only really remember 2, the villain at the end of the sky 2 and some guy in charge of the shopping plaza, i think in one of the cold steel games.
with large scale battles taking place throughout the entire trails series, it just seems strange that not even any npc soldiers die.
@@timidalchemist8475 i recently started playing growlanser on psp, a mildly similar type rpg, and it feels a lot more like real battles, villages being wiped out and nearly everyone in them killed. it gives the game a very grim feel that you would expect with the large battles taking place. i even played ys 8 not long ago, a game made by the same developer, and to my surprise there were more deaths in ys 8 than any trails game, and there are way fewer characters in the game, and no huge battles taking place. just a handful of people from a ship stranded on an island.
What a fantastic review! Zero spoilers and to the point, finishing CS4 so excited for this!
Cold steel 4 was a sloooog 2/3 were peak
@@reginaldlucky1056I really enjoyed CS4.......guess I'm in the minority
@@TheSteelers4190 I liked it for the most part I found it to be bloated towards the end with a buncha battles that were shoe horned in. High speed mode saved my live
@@TheSteelers4190i loved them all. trails in the sky 1 and 2 will always be my favorites though. really hope we get the sky trilogy soon on modern consoles. i never got to play 3 because it's the only trails game on psp that never got a fan translation.
@@reginaldlucky1056 The faster you go with these games the longer it feels.
i thought Cold Steel 4 already have all the cross over there ever could be with Estelle and Lloyd being so prominently featured throughout the story, excited to play this epilogue chapter before Calvard arc!
Holy shit, you guys gave it a solid 10. Not surprising though, because it's a faithful epilogue to both Crossbell and Cold Steel Arcs. Looking forward to this!
Only game in series I would not give at least a 8 to is trails in the sky 3rd. I'm a trails FANBOY! They turned me back into A JRPG OCD!
@@blackmanlistening7909 Bruh, these games are so damn legendary! JRPG OCD forever 🔥😂
it's strange to me that so many people gloss over hajimari and skys the 3rd as much as they do - they're my two favorite games of the series in terms of world building/character development and combat
hajimari is my favorite simply because i LOVED the C-route and all the daydream events that really fleshed out the backstories and upcoming storylines to come. it was so wonderfully done and so bittersweet to finish knowing that it was my last adventure w/ this entourage
excellent review!
You giving the game a 10 and calling it your favorite game of all time was what got me into the series. Halfway through FC and I didin't know what I was missing!
Wow, I feel like you all got this game so much better than IGN did. Their 8 out of 10 felt so strange after all of the praise they gave it. This review actually gets me excited for the game, thank you Noisy Pixel team!
Thank you so much! Evanz!!!!

Great review. I still didnt play Azure so i'm gonna start it now to hop on reverie after.
I kinda like this gacha mode, like you can make the party from your dream.
Have fun playing Azure. So many great plot moments in that entry and is easily one of the strongest LOH games.
@@GilgaMax305I'm like 5h in and it feels incredibly slow. Kinda like Sky SC, pacing falling off a cliff after the previous game's fantastic ending. I've heard chapter 2 and on is when it gets better at least so will be playing it this weekend
Platinumed Hajimari like 3 years ago, looking forward to doing it again, loved the game probably my favorite of the non-2d games.
Thanks for the thorough review! :D So happy you enjoyed the game. It's my second favorite after Trails in the Sky the 3rd, and I and the team poured our hearts out for it.
I’m playing Trails in the Sky the 3rd right now! It’s so good! I’m sad not everyone liked it but the story is crazy good and the gameplay keep things fresh.
Hyped, every Trails game is great to me. I dont mind the tropes/harems/etc, just a good fun story and crew
A great review. I really looking forward to this game. Only a few day's waiting now. It's just around the corner.
One remark - It would be nice if there was at least one scene where turbo mode was disabled. That would give a impression how the game play's in "standard" mode. Personally I don't like that speeding up very much, especially with interactions. If feels far to fast, impatient and hasty, and gets onto my nerves. I like to take a far more relaxed approach. But everyone his/her/its choice of course.
Anyway - Other than that, a really nice review. I will definitely dive in the moment the game is released. It will probably sound a little premature, but... I wonder how long it will take to get the Kuro series to the west. However, that's something for another day...
Game is massive, and when you think you are done you have that Godly post game in the Reverie corridor that adds countless hours of fun playing. Story wise its a little weaker that the Crossbell or Cold Steel arcs, but its still head and leaps above Sky The Third. Falcom never dissapoints, masterpiece after masterpiece, with as little as 80 developers and 1 game yearly, its amazing.
I’m barely on Trails in the Sky the 3rd but I love this series and I’m glad that Reverie is actually like the 3rd in its own modern and unique way!
Have you not played any of the duology? TRAILS TO ZERO, and TRAILS TO AZURE!? Wow your in a great position if so. Even greater if you have not play trails to cold steel 1,2,3, and 4!
@@blackmanlistening7909 i haven’t yet but I’m almost done with Sky the 3rd! And Cold Steel 1 was my first game before I went all the way back. I hope the Crossbell duology is good!
Great review. Though I’m looking forward to Tio’s breakdown at having to destroy a servant of her beloved Mishy.
Where should i start if i want to get into the series and play this game as soon as possible?
I CANNOT WAITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
Got payment confirmation this week from NISA for the limited edition. My body and soul is ready.
Sounds like they just put the best parts of every game prior in this one. Man I can’t fucking wait 🔥🔥
Ohh we already know that!!!! Trails is amazing!!! 🤩

awh thank you
Can't wait to play, started zero recently. Then azure, then cold steel
2 yrs. Freaking finally. I was thinking of replaying Zero/Ao. I played them in 2015 and it was the best Trails arc imo. Lloyd is my favourite Trails protagonist and I like SSS a lot more than Rean's harem (or Class VII) was it called.
Reans harem 😂 you ain't wrong
@@regulator18E Eh half wrong. Rean's Harem + the boys
SSS are my favorites as well. Couldn't stand Rean. So bland goody two shoes.
@axel88er19 lol wut? How are SSS also not goody two shoes? They're literally police officers that act like bracers, it's the epitome of goody two shoes lol.
It's okay kiddo . No need to get mad because Noisy Pixels considers Rean among the best protagonists ever, and Lloyd a simple plot devise
been trying to finish zero and azure but, i've been replaying cs 3 and plan to replay cs4 as well aiming to get the save data bonus
You will be GLAD you did. AZURE the end of that game what you experience and FIND OUT ABOUT KEA! MAN when you finally play that second game appreciate all the times people randomly help you! You can thank me later.
Holy Rixias! 10 outta 10!
This is like watching the avengers come together for the first time, truly magical.
this game reminds me and im sure most of us as well of Grandia 1, 2 , and best of all Grandia 3
Can't wait for the 7th! The story system is very reminiscent of Suikoden III.
Suikoden hype
I’ve never played any of the trials games, where’s a good place to start?
My body is ready
I love hearing about anyone’s favorite game of all time. :)
Preordered, i have all of the games but have never had the time to play, looking to start soon!
I heard this ones really good, I want it for my Switch.
Have this preordered looking forward and glad to see a turn based rpg so highly rated thank you for the awesome review
I'm at Act 4 for all three routes, and I love how self-referential this game can get, especially when it comes to recurring tropes. As an example, the episode with Machias and Dudley really shown a spotlight on Machias basically being Dudley Jr in design, personality, drive, hobbies, and vocal inflections.
It becomes all the more evident when you get specific group character quotes based off similarities: as an example, I loved how one group drew attention to the fact that each arc had at least one short-haired dual swordsman dress in drag for a mission. My second favorite example is how each series has its own character who's basically an analytical prodigy.
Or how basically every trails protag ends up watching over some sort of little girl character.
How long is the book for the new characters? I have aphantasia (no imagination, can't make mental images) so while I love jrpgs and don't mind reading the graphics, music, etc. all tie in. Just blank text though? Most boring thing ever for me. Can take my favorite story of all time from a game, put it in book form and I'm bored within 5 minutes
I feel like my gf and I were the only ones who thought this game was a bit disappointing. The end was very lackluster, and C's route was by far the most interesting (which is crazy since we have fan fav characters in the other 2)
Damn, Kino no Kiseki does it again
That score, wow! Just out of curiosity, how many games in this continuity came before this one?
9.
This is game 10
And unlike Final Fantasy, you CANT just pick this one up.
At the VERY LEAST, YOU NEED TO PLAY
trails from zero
Trails to Azure
Trails of cold steel 1 to 4.
@@RaifSeverenceFacts. All of the games are connected, so starting here would be the dumbest thing to do 😂
@@RaifSeverence AGREED Reverie is for the trails fans who clocked more than 500+ hours on all 9 games myself included.
@@RaifSeverenceYou CAN. Is it a good idea? No. But you definitely can play it
The only thing I don't look forward to is swapping around all the marbles between all the different parties
You don’t want to swap marbles with me :(
Each party's inventory is separate until they reach a certain point in the game.
Yes but its still a pain to do that for ALL party members once ALL 40 are ALL playable at once it also costs OVER 1 million Mira to BUY all their best BUYABLE weapons/armors the mostly COSTLY ones for weapons/armors for MOST of the 54 party members are around 9600 mira EACH.
Not watching bc dont wanna see anything but commenting for algorithm. So excited for the game. Need to finish ff16 in time
arrrgh...I have a massive trails backlog
I haven't played any of the past games. Would I be lost if I started with this one?
You would be completely lost if you started with this game.
At an absolute minimum, you would need to start with Trails of Cold Steel 1.
Personally, I think that Trails in the Sky chapters 1 and 2 are the best in the series. Starting from there would allow you to really immerse yourself in the epic narrative that spans across all the games.
The game was released in 2020, but because Falcom doesn't give a shit about western fans it took 3 years for localization. Enough time for NISA to introduce game breaking bugs, wrong descriptions and Link Attacks are not working. This is a slap in the face of all western Trails fans...
What a year for gaming. So many good games.
Two Yakuza titles and a Trails title, this is a dream year for me. I woulda threw Azure on here, but I played the fan patch, so that wasn't a new game for me
I really want to play it but I've never managed to play a trails game to completion because the first arc starts so so so slowly and i want to do all games in order...
I finished the first game. It was a slog.
Put me off (probably) ever playing the rest of the series.
I mean, people approach Sky FC wrong, u are supposed to talk to every ncp multiple times to get to know the world and to not expect anything too big to happen but most people ignore ncp rounds/doing sidequests and only focus on the main story which will obviously burn anyone out if you are not invested in the world
@nicomontes8631 I enjoyed my time far more, when I just let go of expectations and played it for what it was. These games do a great job with making you feel like a part of the world and it's cast of characters. I don't regret getting into this franchise last year.
I really want to get into this series but my god 9 games and the first 3 are only available on steam. Really wish they would make this series more accessible for newcomers
You should be able to play the Trails in the Sky trilogy on a laptop with ease. Also, you can start with Trails From Zero as well or even Cold Steel 1 where I did. Don’t hesitate to jump in, it’s so worth it!
@@BlackHazama Awesome I might just do that. I've heard great things about this series. Thank you!
@@nathanthompson742 no problem! Happy to help! I started with Cold Steel 1 and I loved it so it made me wanna go back and I’m on Trails in the Sky the 3rd. Loving the journey so far but I understand it’s not for everyone. I haven’t played Trails from Zero but I hear nothing but great things and also a great starting point. Trails From Zero and Trails to Azure are a nice short arc that lead right into Cold Steel
9 games before Reverie seems daunting at first but once you get in there's no turning back you'll love it. Just a side note getting into Trails is huge time commitment and also the be sure to take breaks often so you'll don't feel burnt out.
The most optimal/recommended order is starting with Sky FC and make your way in Japanese release order (chronological) to get the best experience or start with Cold Steel 1 which is the 6th chronological game which serves as a soft reboot for newcomers and the first fully 3D Trails game. CS1 is semi self contained with some minor references to prior games/arcs, that being said starting with CS1 requires you to play up to CS2 and loop back to the Sky Trilogy and Crossbell Duology (Zero/Azure) before moving to CS3, that's because CS3 and onwards will have returning characters(had their character arcs concluded), plotlines and events form the previous 5 games and without the previous context you'll be lost and will have a hard time understanding it.
Don't worry about that. You can easily emulate Sky games even on your phone or a potato PC can run them. Or you can just watch summaries, there's plenty out there
can i play this if i skip Cold steel series? Theres too many story problems with that arc and character problems I just cant stand them
Have always had a roller coaster battle when it comes to cold steel but man has it been an adventure. Im so excited for this the mini games and book additions make it so worth it. Everything getting put on hold whej this comes out
Omg everything is masterpiece today!
everything except this comment
They finally fixed the plot lines and character development.
only english dub or jp ?
Can't wait to play this! The "avengers" game of jrpgs. Loved CS4, but my only complaint is some characters boobs are suddenly way, WAYYY too big
always been that way, its just that in 3D it becomes apparent
rixia god damn
Wow, great score, but I hear you need to play 9 other games before this one.
Haha yea it’s something to look forward to haha
That actually a blessing ;))
Day one pick up physically for the Switch!
Let's goooo!
I've bought both the PS4 LE with plushies and Switch.
Wait, did Lloyd get married?!
😢 haven’t played any of the Trails games yet 😢
Feels like I’m too far behind to even bother at this point… same with Yakuza 😢
I'm in a similar boat with Trails as I'm only 2 games in at this point, but as someone who has worked my way through the Yakuza series within the last 3 years it's been some of the greatest narrative gaming experiences in my life. I went into it as well thinking I would never catch up but I'm glad I put in the time to do so.
The story I would give 9/10 but to pretend like the whole game a 10/10 when people is basically been playing the same game over and over again( I mean all the legend of heroes games. You fight the same bosses, visit the same location and complete the same side quest ). There no in innovation in the series at all let’s hope the next game better I would give this game a 7/10 and I’m a trails fan.
both sites i look at nintendo life and nintendo world report mentioned the performance issues this game has.. so how can you give it a 10 score.. one gave it a 7 the other a 8.5
Cause people have different opinions overall.
Consensus is it's an outstanding JRPG. But Not everyone likes JRPGs so if a Dude who doesn't care bout JRPGs is picked by the company to review a JRPG the score would be lower then a person that likes em ect. Alot of different factors go into reviews
Specially if you have not played the first 9.
This isn't just on the switch.
@@RaifSeverence the only ones reviewed so far are the switch version
I understand that it can get annoying playing a long rpg and having animations play over and over but when you are getting footage for a review could you not skip and speed up all animations?
yea, we'll get better at this next time.
I get why people use turbo mode, but it looks terrible for video reviews it looks ridiculous
I understand Turbo mode for grinding. But for review purposes? Not the best way to showcase these games 😂
Exactly. That shit going to throw off many new players that never heard about and see this. 😂😂😂 it like where the attack animations.
I wish EVERY game all the PREVIOUS 9 had it even on Easy/Very easy mode as in Cold Steel 1 has TOO much backtracking that Turbo mode is a MUST IN FACT on the PS4 Versions of Cold steel 1 and 2 the game is practically UNPLAYABLE with Turbo mode off with it off the party members move at a SNAILS pace OUT of battle when walking that turbo mode is a must.
@@veghesther3204 Every game does have it, the Sky trilogy, Zero and Azure, Cold Steel 1-4 and now Reverie, all have turbo mode, I personally rarely ever use turbo mode cause it pulls me right out of the experience cause it looks stupid
This just feels like a better jrpg than ff16. Ff16 is obviously a much better graphically game but trails feels way more rpg than ff. 9/10
No sky toons. So sad.

I liked Trails 1, 2, and 3 but 4 was such a task for me to finish that it almost made me drop off from the series entirely. I didnt like it at all. Its good to hear Reverie is good so maybe I should at least finish this arc.
You definitely should play the crossbell arc it's amazing I enjoyed them better then Cs games but there all great.

unless to grind to max lvl ASAP to kill every boss in one hit ELSE it takes too much TIME
Not exactly beat the MAIN game around lv 150 in ABOUT 20 hours the OTHER 100 lvs x54 party members even on Very easy mode adds about ANOTHER 15 to 20 hours on the games timer.

The fact that you aren’t super powerful but mere students add a lot of realism into the game where the world doesn’t revolve around you unlike most JRPGs. In fact I started replaying Cold Steel 1 instead of playing the other games. I just love the characters and the school setting.
Best Story Saga but lack of killing human
Trails needs major modernization. It’s stuck in the early 2000s
Everyone says this until a franchise goes too far into current trends. Legend of Heroes is doing great, with the way it currently is. Also, have you seen footage of the brand new arc? I don't think we have anything to worry about 😂
@@GilgaMax305 no whats it called?

Having never played a Trails game before and not having the time commitment to play all of them, I'm passing on this one. Also, I kept rolling my eyes every time I saw a female character with a ridiculous bust size (so I don't know if they're for me).
Don't think of it as "You have to play 9 games before this." Think of it as "You get to play 9 games before this."
Another mediocre entry to a niche snoozefest of a franchise.
What?! No voice acting during character interactions?? This is 2023 people.
Actually, it's 2020. And having every line voiced would probably too expensive for a rather small studio like Falcom.
@@Patte-chan Fair point, I forget all companies are not Square. Still, it baffles me how expensive voice acting is made out to be. Like, you have artists, musicians, programmers etc. but the blokes standing in a booth for a couple hours saying a few lines are the expensive ones? I mean even a low budget game like Gal*Gun 2 has Japanese voice acting, which tells me that Japanese voice actors aren't expensive? But apparently English voice acting is nothing short of a luxury?
2020 though? The game is 3 years late to the English market?
@@PikaLink91 You'd be surprised cause of how VA's have to copyright their voices and they agree that the company may use them in ads, games, etc. Decent VA's can make thousands of dollars for just a day's work
@@rooneysetiawan3302 Not to downplay their work, but allow me to express my humble opinion that that's absurd. You open your mouth and words come out. I know that IS very much to downplay their talents, but again, compared to the work everyone else puts into the game, I find it ridiculous how expensive the voice actors are.
I mean with Hellena Taylor (Bayonetta) there was this whole debuckle that she felt she was worth more than she was payed, and while later reports said that she had in fact been offered exactly what she was worth, the general topic was brought up that voice acting is apparently looked down upon within the acting community as "not real work" because you only use your voice and not your entire body, like the million dollar payed Hollywood actors.
I am of course in favor of people being payed what they are worth and due, but as I also argued back then, a (live action) movie cannot exist without its actors, but a game can very much exist and be enjoyable without voice acting. In a movie, the actors are an essential piece. In a game, they are just the icing on the cake.
Apparently very pricey icing though......
@@PikaLink91 That's is fair, but to a majority of people voice acting in games nowadays is almost essential, sure you have the indie games that are successful without them, but can you honestly see if the next triple A game without voice acting and have no backlash. If you wanna none game VA look at Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, they make a hell of a lot of money, and Vin Diesel literally says I'm Groot for a majority of his script. All I'm saying that voice acting and regular acting is both great and shouldn't be downplayed
