FIREWORKS OVER THE SEA 🎆 La Maddalena 🌊 Sardinia, Italy 🎇 22nd July 2023

The island of La Maddalena (or Maddalena island) is the main island of the archipelago of the same name. The homonymous municipality of La Maddalena stands on it.
The island, located opposite the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, has a surface area of approximately 20 km² and is the only inhabited one in the La Maddalena archipelago. The highest point of the island is reached by the Guardia Vecchia, an internal hill that rises 146 meters above sea level. The island is mainly made up of granite rock, the coasts which extend for about 45 km are therefore jagged and rocky and the interior is characterized by some modestly sized hills.
The heritage of traditions of this town, of relatively recent foundation, is profoundly linked to its maritime traditions and is manifested in a series of popular festivals, the best known of which is that of Santa Maria Maddalena, which takes place on 22nd July every year and represents an important moment for the community of which the saint is protector.
In the past, a traditional custom took place in the churchyard: those who wished to transport the statue of the saint during the procession negotiated transport among themselves, and the offerings thus obtained were paid to the church; the winning group took the statue and transported it to the port, to the boat landing where the solemn blessing took place.
Even today the patronal feast of Santa Maria Maddalena is undoubtedly the best known, most important and most heartfelt feast of the year on the island. During the week of the celebration, preparations take place and there are usually numerous shows (musical, sporting or cultural) and religious celebrations.
On the day of the Saint, the religious procession takes place, which starts from the church of S. Maria Maddalena and accompanies the statue of the Saint to the port of Cala Gavetta. Here, a procession of boats transports her and follows her on the sea, up to Piazza Comando, together with the statue of the Madonna, and a crown of flowers is thrown into the water. At the end of the crossing, a procession of people awaits the arrival of the Saint and, still in procession, she is accompanied back to the entrance of the church, where the blessing takes place. The entire procession, especially the sea crossing, is an evocative and exciting spectacle, both from external observers and from active participants.
The patronal celebration ends at night with fireworks, which can be admired from Piazza Comando or along the seafront.
