Yanis Varoufakis: "We live under something far worse than capitalism"

- Yanis Varoufakis is one of the world's most famous economists and left-wing intellectuals. The former Finance Minister of Greece, he is a Greek politician, the founder of the Democracy in Europe Movement (DiEM25) and launched the Progressive International with Bernie Sanders.
We had a lot to talk about: the European and the US left, Keir Starmer, Joe Biden, the pandemic, the economic crisis, fascism, the EU, the climate emergency. Strongly recommend a watch!

The corporate media has failed us. It's time to build something new.

Very True... the corporate media has been failing us for decades... The people do need a new media! but alas, another video channel may not quite be the ground breaking platform that it is intended to be.
Instead, imagine a multimedia platform, free from the infringement of a multinational corporation, that offers audio, video and text content delivered direct to a global audience of connected users; who can actively participate and validate the content without the interference or involvement of advertisers or editors with corrupt conflicts of interest.
A truly democratic source of news, by the people, for the people - giving a voice to the issues that matter most, without external censorship or intimidation. We can make it happen, and it doesn't even need patreon!
All of us. Fingerpointing will not help.
Did you leave the graun?
You're part of the corporate media, you weasel.
That's your answer? A vanity publication?
We're burning down the wrong Amazon‼️
That should be like a hashtag :)

Yanis Varoufakis: sensible, knowledgeable, and true: one of the few men who says things as things are.
@Icarus Rex he was just giving a great performance, as his mate Alexis....because of the stress the troika put him, he s got ....HERPES!!! 😱...🤪
The man is truly brilliant.
He seems knowledgeable on capitalism but should read more Marxist writers, his "alternative" is not very coherent. He mentions the financialization and centralization of markets under state planning as being a natural part in the development of capitalism, but then immediately proposes a system the is the antithesis to this, something that would break apart this centralization, which from a historical materialist perspective makes no sense because you build economies on top of the material conditions of the developed prior system. Building socialism is not about destroying the foundations of the capitalist system, capitalism already destroys its own foundations. It's about taking the new foundations, the _socialized_ foundations of developed capitalism, and changing the relations of production to be more compatible with it, to democratic the centralized economy, not to decentralize it. I don't think he even knows what "feudalism" is because feudalism was incredibly decentralized and borderline anarchy, he seems to buy into the myth that feudalism was some centralized command economy where the state and controlled owned everything.
Some excellent points. Varoufakis is right on a lot of things - his analysis of "socialism for the bankers" is spot on.
He fails to note Furlough, CARES and other such policies that provide aid to households in 2020.
The $1200 one time payment in the ‘CARES act’ (an Orwellian term if ever there was one) was put in to make people think they were getting some relief.
For most people, however, the money went straight into paying either their rent or their mortgage and any other debts they owed (student loan debt, credit card debt, medical debt, car loan debt etc.)
That means that it went straight to the creditors at the public’s expense.
And, to make matters worse, now the politicians can claim that this spending has negatively impacted the deficit and that the only way out will be to cut social security and Medicaid.
Biden has been looking to do this for years and this might well be his chance.
@@rfmckean If you give every single US citizen a million dollars, total cost would be 300 trillions. The packages total was over three trillions, citizen got just over 300 billion of it, money paid for by the citizens in Taxes

Try typing in random letters and looking at the top ten stockholders. It gets really creepy after 15 or so.

Ie company I work for top stockholder is Invesco. In the top 3 of Invesco is one of the companies listed above.
Not that this makes a lot of difference but isn't it more that those 3 companies manage the share portfolios of people, pension funds etc. that, cumulatively, accounts for 90% of the shares on the stock exchange? In fact it might be worse because they are playing with others money so will take more risk. They get their fees whatever happens.

Absolutely brilliant: this is the kind of engaging and accessible communication that we need.
Spot on! Gotta love the clarity that Yanis brings to Owen's incisive questions. Really enjoyable. Thanks Owen.
LOLZ!
It wasn't all that brilliant. It was interesting and informative but Jones never once probed Varoufakis' answers. I don't know if that was by agreement or whether Jones wasn't up to it.
@@indricotherium4802 its obvious that owen is no match for Yanis but there is also the problem that deep probing is harder if there is no present post capitalist society. Yanis tries to probe for problems speculatively but he is extremely knowledgeable

The British left desperately needs someone like him. Someone able to explain economics well and isn't obsessed with cancerous identity politics
@@efcdom1878 spot on
@@dotTomT What's his motivation then?
He wants the exact society that I propose. Essentially Finland without the private sector. A nationalised sector of government services, worker / consumer co-operatives, and a strong variety of Labour unions.
I'm trying to imagine how it would work on a day-to-day basis. How would it work in such a system if a person or group of people wanted to found a business based off a new idea or product they have developed?
Would they be forced to employ people who are union members? Would everyone be required by law to join a union? How would people be paid? I have seen a lot of people suggesting such a system would work like cooperatives where each employee owns a share of the business. What if that employee would rather receive a salary not tied to short term income fluctuations?
Sorry, I have just realised that is too many questions!
@@MUSTASCH1O sorry just to add to this as well. Co-ops can start off in much the same ways usual private businesses do. Having the capital from inheretance, getting loans from banks, pooling together resources etc
@@maximthefox going on an extreme right or left tangent is the real problem facing free market democracies.
The absence of a private sector has its own set of issues. Only difference is it brings problems that are the opposite from a totally unregulated capitalist free market.
When Multiple components with different needs which are operating in a dynamic and changing environment and are inter related with each other, finding a balance between all competing needs is paramount to prevent a catastrophic failure.
Governance resulting from a political system based on academic ideology is much more dangerous to a country compared to the favorite boogeyman, big government.
@@theallseeingeye9388 I can't say I understand what you just said to me
@@maximthefox Yes, what I wanted to add to this discussion is that these would be -- and some already are -- private businesses. The government is only involved to regulate where needed to protect and, of course, to collect taxes. But they are private enterprises, just owned by the workers who create the product or provide the service. What is everyone afraid of? Remember, PRIVATE enterprises!
Owen, You navigated this range of topics very well and provided Yannis with a platform of such congeniality allowing him to portray the genius of his analytical and insightful thinking combined with the genuine sincerity and comradery that is needed in today's world... thanks to you both.
I'm always gonna have love for Yanis , any finance minister who rocks up on a bike is alright with me !

It's so refreshing to see an authentic human being like Yanis!
I miss the times when banks were boring and just doing their civil duty
Glass Stegil was a fire break then it won't and we payed!
@@duaneslack8516 That's the real question we should ask!
Banks never did their civil duty. Between 1950 -- 70, "the City of London" was forming into one of the most corrupt institutions on Earth. JP Morgan & the Bank of England decided to go ahead with "the Hitler Project" in 1930. Roosevelt brought in some regulations to control Banks, but these were thrown out during the 1990's. "Money printing" is destroying fiat currencies to keep the system going a little bit longer. Disposable paper coats for doctors to examine patients cost 50 cents at the beginning of the year -- these coats now cost $50.
Never in history has that been the case
So refreshing to hear a sane politician speak. Why can't we have politicians like him in the USA?
Sure but you do have great politicians in America as well, Bernie, Howie, Alexandria, Ilhan, Rashida, Cori. The problem is that politicians who care about the people are a minority so even if they work hard they can't change everything just like snap. Europe needs also politicians who care about people.
What a wonderful job you're doing, Owen., with these interviews! Looking forward to more. Please interview all thinking and genuine people from all sides of political spectrum.
Brilliant vision of another future! Lots to do, even more to persuade but very achievable. Well done.
I don’t know how you can possibly fight against international capitalism from within a single state. We need a global awakening.
that's what lenin and trotsky used to say..
Yes that's true... which is why has is part of a pan-global socio-political movement set up to show how those changes are possible, spread the word and to put pressure on all governments. He gives talks all over the world on this and the movement is growing. He talks about it (modestly) in his interview. Easy to miss it. 😏
Look at Jeremy Corbyn's Project for Peace & Justice. Huge potential for an international movement there.

I'm a pretty averagely informed member of the public who struggles to grasp a lot of political discussion due to a lack of knowledge of economics and much of political history! We need more people like Yanis (and yourself, Owen) who make such discussions clear and accessible to all. I always come away from listening to Yanis feeling like I understand areas I've before felt too dumb to explore!
The job of an intellectual is to make these kinds of information accessible to the public, to break everything down and to expose lies, so the average man or woman can understand what is going on. None of us ordinary people have the time of the energy to do all the research on our own.
It's this kind of comment that gives me real optimism for the future!
Subscribed. Many interesting ideas discussed. Next question: What policies are likely to a) further the cause of liberal-green-democratic socialism, and b) win the support of a traditionally conservative British electorate?
Google "Inverted Totalitarianism" sums up the US government perfectly.
Sheldon Wolin.. he coined the term.. his book, “Democracy Inc.” is amazing. I highly recommend it... We’re ruled by Corporations... United Corporations of America... The book Chomsky book behind Yanis’s left side.. “Who Rules the World”... another excellent book.
Owen you need to get someone to edit a load of clipped segments out of these interviews like NM does. Not everyone has an hour to listen to an interview, plus specific subjects will be more appealing to some people increasing your reach
If you can’t find an hour to spend on such important issues, then I fear you are part of the problem.
It's about making the content accessible to people outside the left.

I've enjoyed this interview - but I was hoping you could have gotten his critique of the new labour green policy? As a lay person I don't understand the full extent of the change. I enjoy listening to Yanis but sometimes he will ascribe without detail. When he does detail it is fantastic and you can follow his conclusions logically but I would dearly have liked to hear the actual critique on the difference between the 2019 policy and the new one.

@Icarus Rex corporations are state sponsored legal fictions. They are not necessary for a nation state, and their control over the former is not desirable. Although your strawman has no point because nobody advocated for dissolving corporations

Great episode, great guest.
I dream vaguely about dividing everything into neighbourhoods where, like in a village, almost all is done locally: the care for the sick and elderly, the energy production, the food, recycling..building, making furniture out of a kind of basic units, giving everybody a job or task to be useful. It requires some decentralizing technology that is not yet well available sadly. The goal should be to live in a caring community where people more or less know each other, even in modern city life.
And local democratic decision making. Sounds fantastic!
Fascinating conversation.
Please interview Richard Wolff and Vijay Prashad. And explore Cuba's response to the current situation, particularly the virus.
I am at the 26 min mark.
I have not heard a word about Portugal. Portugal after the 2015 election (I am using wikipedia ) formed left wing government and ended austerity (?). It recover almost all of the economic decline caused since 2009 (Trading economics). How did they do this? Does this show a different path not followed by Greece?
Another omission is the failure to address the PRoC (mainland China). The grand bargain for everyman in an authoritrean system, of economic security with no power, is what is on offer in the PRoC. I understand why euro countries (except Portugal) get discussed . The omission of the PRoC is still unfortunate.

Yanis's proposal for "democracy at work" is more or less the same as what prof Richard Wolff has been suggesting for a while.
I understand why and how an entersprise could function better for all its stakeholders under democratic leadership.
Voting in such entersprise are easily explained. But I don't understand where capital would come from in such an enterpise?
That's a very interesting interview. I especially like the part when you said that it was a hard time now for everybody, not just leftists. As these days I certainly don't feel like a leftist. It's interesting when Yanis talks about the dangers of illiberal governments. But then he also seemed encouraged by the power wielded by governments in the coronavirus pandemic. He sees it a way to empower the powerless. I'm not sure if that's what's happening in 2020. Instead it seems that the power is being used to facilitate greater corruption for the benefit of our neo-feudal overlords. Anyway, as I say, a very interesting discussion Owen. Long form interview is the way to go.
