Super review! I am a long time Hoka Challenger ATR 5 wearer (mostly trails), who bought three pairs after they were discontinued. You have convinced me its time again to buy - the version 7. Thanks.
Thanks for watching, John! This is my first pair of Challengers but the updates Hoka made this year indicate it’s an improvement over previous versions! 👊🏽
⚽I couldn't find the rock Emoji, so here's the soccer one. great video mate! I've been a first time Hoka enthusiast for about 4 months now, with the Clifton 9's being my first pair for outdoor running. I stumbled upon your videos, and thanks to you I purchased the Challenger 7's which I love!! I do a bit of boxing, and the grip it gives to having to move around and use footwork is superb! Shadow boxing and doing jump rope in them is amazing as well! I went ahead and purchased the Speedgoat 5's from another one of your videos, and just received them today. keep up the amazing production and in depth analysis in your videos.
Thanks, Adrian! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the Challenger 7s! They really are a great all-rounder of a shoe! 👊🏽
I have these (the 7) and the Speedgoat 4. I was surprised how grippy they are compared to the SG's in very wet and muddy conditions. I expected them to be significantly worse, but somehow they are VERY close. PNW conditions, combination of ice/mud/sleet/puddles/wet rock.
This is fantastic to hear! You’ve really put them to the test! My testing conditions are tame by comparison! It’s good to know they compare so well to such a good full-on trail shoe like the SG.
I agree with your observation about the exposed foam on the soles wearing quickly, I'm in the third week of a Couch to 5k program so my shoes have literally only 'run' a few kilometres but already I can see the foam under the arch is compressed looking, fraying and misshapen which is a bit disappointing for a relatively expensive shoe. I am fairly heavy though at about 120kg so that might have something to do with it... The shoes are very comfortable and the 'ride' seems to get smoother the faster I go which is a good incentive to try a bit harder - at just the right pace I feel like I'm just gliding along effortlessly!
I almost didn't try them on because I thought they looked silly with the really thick sole and unusual colour schemes but after trying literally every other runner that the shop had in my size I tried the Hoka's as a last resort and found them surprisingly comfortable.
I'm glad you tried them as comfort is reason number 1 to buy a pair of running shoes! Don't worry too much about the foam looking compressed; these shoes will stand up to what you throw at them!
BTW, nice going with the couch-to-5k program!!
loved the 5 and 6, took them anywhere for long runs, they also held up really well. def will be getting a pair of these.
Good to hear! I'm surprised just how much i'm enjoying running in these!
🪨! I think I might put these on my list this year. They look fun!
I'm still surprised with how fun they are. They're a good reminder that I don't need all the bells and whistles in a shoe to make me love them!
Great review!🪨Rock on, Matt!
Thanks, Eddie! You comments have such sedimental value to me. I don't take them for granite!
🪨 great video Matt!
Cheers, mate! Thanks for watching! 👊🏽
🪨 Good vid! Trying to decide between this and the clifton 9 for light trails
You could probably get away with the Clifton 9 for light trails but this is fairly close to the Clifton 9 in terms of comfort.
How does it perform in a wet and cold / winter weather?
It performs well in the wet but I haven't taken it in very cold weather. The coldest I've run in it has been around 7ºc/44ºf.@@okipwn
@@its_Matt_B_What's the fit like compared to the Clifton 9? I find the standard width Clifton to be too tight for my flat right foot, but I want a gtx version and they don't do wides in either the Clifton or Challenger gtx.
@@formulaic78 The Clifton 9 and Challenger 7 fit very similar.
I bought the Gore Tex version (should arrive soon) and watched your review afterwards. So glad to hear that you liked the shoes! The thing is, there are hardly any Gore Tex road shoes, compared to the amount of Gore Tex trail shoes. And so I am even happier to know that you felt them to be like "normal" road shoes, because that's how I primarily plan to use them. Although the trail capabilities certainly increase the reasons to explore more running routes! 🙂
I’m sure you’re going to be very happy with them! I love a low-key trail shoe that doesn’t feel bad when running on the roads! It’s so versatile! 👊🏽
@@its_Matt_B_ Great, thanks! I guess the best and worst part about buying new shoes is waiting for the shipping! :D
@@mohitchawla9791 🤣 Yes! 100%
@@its_Matt_B_ So, just got back from my first run in these, the Gore Tex version. Just amazing. The traction was my favorite part, as I ran on road and trail in heavy showers! I never got the confidence (and good fit) in the Nike Peg Trail 4 Gtx to run on wet surfaces, though I like the speed on that one. With the Challenger, rear foot oriented strike has nice typical Hoka rhythm, and I think perhaps a touch of stability too. I really needed a “recovery in the rain” *road* shoe, and this fits the bill perfectly! Maybe I will do more with it!
🪨that one took some finding!
I’m not sure I would replace my Novablast3TRs with these. Did I tell you that I’m quite excited about the Rocket x2s? 😂 mainly because I’m a bit fed up of the harder eva on the Hoka’s, I’m hoping my Bondi 8s mellow with age like my Rincons, but did I tell you I’m excited about the Rocket X2s?
Some emojis seems to be more difficult to find than others! Even once I’ve found them once it can be difficult to find them again. 🤣
If your Novablast 3 TR are working I’d say save your money for the Rocket X2. I can’t say for sure, but I’m picking up that you may be excited for that release! 🤔
@@its_Matt_B_ you mean you actually go back and find them again? As much as I enjoy you videos, shoe reviews, race vlogs and general running interest research, I’m not sure I even want to be enlightened on your reasons for going BACK to find obscure emojis! 😵💫🤭
@@mawilliams777 Sometimes a follow up to a comment requires I use them again. If I’ve put the emoji in the video while editing on my iPad, it isn’t in the recently used emojis on my computer or phone. Why is life so difficult? 🤣
@@its_Matt_B_ Well! You have created your own, cross platform, first world problem there Matt!🌎
@@mawilliams777 😑 It’s not easy being me! 🙄
Interesting! I had the Challenger 6 and didn't enjoy the ride at all...felt generally quite unrefined and uncomfortable, especially for longer distances. Harsh midsole. Moved onto the Hoka Stinson instead, which for me is perfect. Possibly due to my 6'2" 205lb frame. Being a heavier built runner probably explains the harsh feeling of the Challenger 6. For lighter runners though, the Challenger would probably be great and a solid choice. Thanks Matt.
I didn’t run in the Challenger 6, but the 7 has that extra 2mm of stack height so hopefully the ride is a little smoother. I’m glad you’ve found something that works though! 👊🏽
stinson 7 or challenger 7 for injuries ? I have tendonitis achilles tendon, plantar aponeurosis pain + heel, pains in the anterior shins and tendinitis of the peroniers
Or they are the same?
I have the army soon
Neither if you're injured. Rest and recover from your injuries before running (sorry! I know no one wants to hear this).
The difference between the Challenger and the Stinson comes down to stability. If you are a neutral runner the Challenger will probably be your best bet. If you require a little guidance/stability then go with the Stinson.
@@its_Matt_B_ I’m going to have orthopedic soles
My physio tells me to keep running
And i enter the army 3th october so i can't really rest and lose my level :/
I saw that there was more cushioning especially at the heel with the stinson - 42mm against 31mm for the challenger ?
@@Samuuuel Yes, you're right about the Stack heights, although I'm not sure what difference it will make. The Stinson may feel a little softer, but studies have shown impact forces can be higher with higher cushioned shoes. Ultimately, I think you should go for the one you can get the best price on!
@@its_Matt_B_ really? i always thought more stack = more protection so the shoe absorbs the most impact and the smaller the stack is and the less protection and absorption will be important
I’ve used Challenger 5’s for the past three years for hiking, here in FL and in the Smokies. I’ve loved them! I recently bought the 7’s. It’s far more of a running shoe than previous versions. I don’t think it’s going to be my go-to hiking shoe but maybe I’ll run a few trails now that I have them and try to buy version 6 for hiking while I can. The 7 is much lighter than they look! 🪨
I’m glad you said that about them being lighter than they look! It was quite surprising to me how little they weigh! 🪶
I have Atreyu Base Trail and ASICS Fuji Lite 2 for road to trail uses. But I really like the flexible rock plate in Saucony Endorphin 12 and Xodus Ultra. I have a few technical trails with lots of poking rocks here and there is a significant difference in comfort thanks to the 🪨plate
Great use of the 🪨 emoji! It sounds like you're well set up with your trail shoes! I wish I had trails nearby where a rock plate was needed but alas, no; it's all sand around here!
I want but this sheoes to ruming on road /ice or snow road . So take this or asics gel pulse 14 gtx?
I haven't run in the Pulse 14, but I would still recommend the Challenger 7 because it's adept at road AND trail. I would also recommend getting the Challenger 7 in their GTX version.
🗿thanks for the video
Cheers for watching, mate!
🪨
@@Rayzajw Cheers, mate! 👊🏽
i got no problem with this video
Good to hear, Capt! I haven’t quite developed the channel’s complaints department yet! 👊🏽
I find it too slippy on wet / damp trails
I can see that if there are slippery roots or large wet rocks!
@@its_Matt_B_ I’ve just got the trabuco 11s for a 50 mile ultra and excited to try them on semi mountainous terrain (mountain ultra but lots of runnable paths of varying terrain)!! First run in them tomorrow morning 🌅 😃, I know ASICS aren’t hailed as great trail shoes but I think they’ll suit me.. will report back
@@10stephenrose Nice! I’ve heard good things about the Trabuco, although I’ve never ran in them! LMK your thoughts!
@@its_Matt_B_ the trabuco’s are slightly heavier than I’m used to but kept me plodding forward fairly comfortably and managed 3 hours of hilly trails with confidence… second run today in them on flat park trail, picked up the pace on tired legs…. Felt really good 9/10 👍
@@10stephenrose Excellent! Glad to hear they feel good even if they’re a bit heavy. Nice going with the 3 hours of hilly trails! 💪🏽

Cheers, Meg (I took a guess your name is Meg based on your handle😅). If it’s not, I’m sorry! 😉
🏔 - i couldn't find the rock! Great review, the Challenger 6 is so tempting on sale at AUD139 right now. Is the 2mm stack increase significant?
A mountain is made of rocks, so I’ll accept it! 🤣
I’m with you that a good deal is hard to turn down, however based on the comments I’ve received the 7 is a considerable update and quite a bit better than the 6.
🪨… great overview of the shoe.
Cheers, Matthias, and thanks for the 🪨! 👊🏽
🧗🏻♂For slippery rocks/leaves I would get the La Sportiva Mutant.
Agreed! This is a fair weather trail shoe, for sure!
