Mine was Ninja Scroll late night on TV when I was a kid, blew my mind. I watched this a few years later, brings back so many memories! The special tank weapons were funny AF too!
For those of you that slightly remember this anime or don't know it at all, the series is called: Dominion - Tank Police. It came out on the Sci Fi channel as their second wave/season of anime back in the early 90's. The first wave had 3 anime: Robot Carnival, Venus Wars, and Vampire Hunter D (respectively). There were 2 parts to the first collection (4 technically as Japan was fond of having acts in their episodes) of Tank Police. It revolved around a criminal android by the name of Buaku and the 2 human protagonists Leona and Al. For the most part, Buaku continued to harass and escape numerous times from the tank police. Perhaps the funniest part that was edited for TV was colorful landmines that turned into giant phalluses that up-ended and flipped over the police tanks. Also edited for TV was the substance inside the scientist's globes he was studying that was urine and not plasma. AnnaPuma and UniPuma were actually android sex dolls that escaped and was on the run so they teamed up with Buaku after he took them in. Because they were android sex dolls, they hated all humans. However, as was shown in this clip, they also learned how to strip tease as their time as sex dolls and were not above using their charm and bodies to get what they needed. Sadly, I never was able to pick this series up on VHS tape. The best that I could do was rent if from Block Buster and record a copy on a blank tape. Anime in the 90's was stupidly expensive. Some anime tapes ranged from $30-$50 at the time. Being in 2 parts, I just didn't have $100 at the time to buy it. I did get the send series called New Dominion - Tank Police that still featured Leona, Al and their tank Bonaparte. Plus it had Uni and Anna in it but no Buaku. It was alright but not nearly as funny at the first series. Still, I'll never forget that the Sci Fi channel finally put a name to the Japanese animation that I enjoyed. We had anime earlier than the 90's in America. Speed Racer, Kimba - the white lion, Voltron, and Astro Boy just to name a few. BTW, those of you too young to remember, it was called "Japanamation" before becoming known as anime (shudder). God I hated that name, it never sounded right to me. But, that's my two cents on the matter. Hope I could help you out.
In the manga, even if they act as Buaku's minions, they had been assigned to help him by a mysterious unnamed boss, and can't wait for that assignment to end. Infact they remain on Heart when Buaku finally succeed and steals a starship to found a far away colony with Greenpeace and the rest of his gang (yeah. In the manga, the villain wins). In the subsequent Dominion C1, since, for Leona's scorn, they can't be indicted of anything ("they are objects, they are no more guilty than a vacuum cleaner") they end up in Police's custody, and Anna becomes Leona's tank gunner.

The cover of the movie with these girls almost turns me into a furry when I was 13. I watched the anime for first time recently and Jesus how campy it is. Brilliant too, as usual with Masamune Shirow. The girls were like cloned cats made for sex trade or something? And they went rogue?
It never specifically says, the most it says is that they worked in strip joints. I think it is far more likely they were created as assassins or perhaps bodyguards, but were abandoned like Buaku in his flashback from the third or fourth episode. They have advanced targeting computers integrated into them too, at least per the second manga. I love how versatile they are as characters, they have scenes where they are very funny and some where they are quite serious. This is absolutely one of the best OVAs ever and I have been obsessed with it since I was way too young too lol.

You got ones like the Puma sisters, basically people with animal features like the ears, eyes, teeth, and tails. Then next up its the same as the first but then they are covered in fur like how the Thundercats are, but then you got the true furry. An animal that stands up right like a person bipedal with human limbs. But an animal with human intelligence magical/non-magical still put them in the furry category.

F yeah, brother. Hand drawn will always beat out digital for me. You can like Digi if you want, I just like the look of pencil and paper. Plus the style back then felt more "mature".
Realistic "fanservice", with an end goal in mind. Not just contrived panty shots and clothing rip, either. The latter aren't horrible in measured doses, but can get annoying if used as a crutch for a bad story or animation. The older stuff was pretty tasteful when it came to nudity in any form.
Modern fan service tends to be way more annoying, jarring, and filled to the brim with up skirts of prepubescent girls. Not really puritanical to find that shit obnoxious and distasteful.

My brother was so pissed LOL. They did kind a remark, but I didn't care for it much because they removed some characters like Al, Leona's partner and love interest. Fun Fact, this was created by the same guy who made Ghost in the Shell. I wish they would reboot this one, wouldn't mind a live action version either.

I remember back in the day from 2000 Toonami-Adult Swim it was a blend of children/Adolescents and Adult oriented animes being shown. To me, the ones featuring mostly adults were better because of the intense action we'd see whereas the kiddie stuff was comical by nature and would fit into a 4Kidz slot easily. When I see kids being in intense story arcs that would lead to their own demise, I be put off quick and it doesn't help that in some them there is unnecessary fanservice. This and the "annoying lovey dovey couple that kept third-wheeling the space cat that just wanted to eat chocolate eggs" were some of the first anime I saw, was really enamored with the style and excited to see where it would go...
Dominion Tank Police, first saw this on the Sci-Fi Channel's "Saturday Anime" block back in the mid-90s. This was the second one I saw (Vampire Hunter D was the first) but this far and away went on to be my favorite. Got the release on DVD when Central Park Media finally got it to retail and it was adorn with a "PS2 DVD Playback Compatible" sticker right on the shrink wrap. There was a followup "New Dominion Tank Police" and it was also excellent, a 6 part OVA, highly recommend it Also the music in the Japanese dub is completely different from the English one, huh, didn't know that until today
I was just looking at the music tab on my UA-cam home page and this came up. I’m not usually into this kind of stuff and I have no idea what this is from, but I won’t deny I love the character design, love the music, love, the animation movement. Also great use of 80s rock hair.
there is just something so.... comforting about old school anime. now i know this aint true old school, but this is 30+ years old at this point so it classifies. but anyway, i feel like this wouldnt have the same appeal if it was in a smooth animation style of more recent times. for example love is war (thanks hayasaka for this comparison) amazing animation work but if this scene was made in that style/animation quality, i really dont think it would be as good.
Man I love 80s anime soundtracks :) Bubblegum Crisis/Crash is one of my favorite 80s shows. Not even really a fan of mecha/powered suit shows, but it just worked and had great music.
Unfun fact: The Dominion Tank Police OVAs are *still* only on DVD. If we can get freakin' ANGEL COP on Blu ray - with a STEELBOOK, no less - then Tank Police had damned well better be able to get there too.
I remember watching this anime on Comcast On Demand back when anime was still free to watch there. It was an interesting world that they set up. A shame it was limited to just three sets of OVAs. It had the potential to be expanded upon into a full series, if you ask me, dealing with issues like pollution, corruption, the militarization of the police, and societal decay. In regard to these two catgirls--Anna and Uni, a pair of androids collectively known as the Puma Sisters--they may be criminals in the first set of OVAs (and had a very brief appearance in the second set of OVAs, New Dominion Tank Police, with red hair this time around), but by the third OVA, Tank S.W.A.T. 01, they ended up joining the police force, serving as the drivers for Leona's tank. This also happened in the manga, much to Leona's consternation (a feeling which is mutual).

The first manga is set directly after the events of the original OVA, and it is pretty good. The second one is even better, and was the basis for Tank S.W.A.T. 01 (which was the most disappointing OVA tbh). The manga is great if you can find it anywhere, with the second manga (Conflict) possibly even being the best of the franchise.
@@firestar1662 I know that Dark Horse Comics was the one who localized it, but it's going to be very hard (and very expensive) to find, considering it's been out of print for years. As it is, Amazon is selling a used copy for almost $50, well above the standard retail price for the same volume as listed on Dark Horse's website. And there's quite a few volumes of the manga, to boot. I have not seen Tank S.W.A.T. 01, though. But I am interested in seeing it, even if it's not as good as the other ones. Still, I maintain that this world has the potential to be expanded upon into a full-on series, tackling issues that are very relevant today, namely the issues I mentioned in my original comment.
Just checked Wikipedia and it seems there were three OVA productions totaling 11 episodes altogether. The 1985 manga ran for about 9 months and had one volume, I’m not clear on the second manga but it looks like it was a one-shot published in ‘88 and there was another manga running in ‘92 for about 16 months, also one volume. Gonna have to add this to my list.
Ah the Puma sisters from 'Dominion Tank Police'. Noice! Watched the Tank Police movies on Canada's Sci-Fi channel when it was starting up in the 90's. They showed several animes like Ninja Scroll, Venus Wars among a few others introducing me to how diverse anime stories can be. While I have watched both Tank Police movies, liked them both too, I'm still not 100% sure I understood what they were about, aside from their kick ass action sequences. Either it's been too long, or it's just how many animes were back them. ^_^
I have the complete series on DVD. Got them at the mall in Tampa. Fl. Along with Project A-Ko series. Video Girl Ai. The cat girls Annapuma & Unipuma were scatterbrained hotties. Heeeelllooo nurses! Have to rewatch this.
Look up "TIE Fighter - short film" of OtaKing Animation. He use loots of computer assist, but he can still capture the 80s style. He is a one man crew, image what a full studio can do.

This and the "annoying lovey dovey couple that kept third-wheeling the space cat that just wanted to eat chocolate eggs" were some of the first anime I saw, was really enamored with the style and excited to see where it would go...
Dominion Tank Police, first saw this on the Sci-Fi Channel's "Saturday Anime" block back in the mid-90s. This was the second one I saw (Vampire Hunter D was the first) but this far and away went on to be my favorite. Got the release on DVD when Central Park Media finally got it to retail and it was adorn with a "PS2 DVD Playback Compatible" sticker right on the shrink wrap. There was a followup "New Dominion Tank Police" and it was also excellent, a 6 part OVA, highly recommend it
Also the music in the Japanese dub is completely different from the English one, huh, didn't know that until today
Darkstalkers was a short OVA, based in a capcom game, but the quality of animation was top notch.I remember when my group got a tape from Japan.

I was just looking at the music tab on my UA-cam home page and this came up. I’m not usually into this kind of stuff and I have no idea what this is from, but I won’t deny I love the character design, love the music, love, the animation movement. Also great use of 80s rock hair.
there is just something so.... comforting about old school anime. now i know this aint true old school, but this is 30+ years old at this point so it classifies. but anyway, i feel like this wouldnt have the same appeal if it was in a smooth animation style of more recent times. for example love is war (thanks hayasaka for this comparison) amazing animation work but if this scene was made in that style/animation quality, i really dont think it would be as good.

I remember watching this anime on Comcast On Demand back when anime was still free to watch there. It was an interesting world that they set up. A shame it was limited to just three sets of OVAs. It had the potential to be expanded upon into a full series, if you ask me, dealing with issues like pollution, corruption, the militarization of the police, and societal decay.
In regard to these two catgirls--Anna and Uni, a pair of androids collectively known as the Puma Sisters--they may be criminals in the first set of OVAs (and had a very brief appearance in the second set of OVAs, New Dominion Tank Police, with red hair this time around), but by the third OVA, Tank S.W.A.T. 01, they ended up joining the police force, serving as the drivers for Leona's tank. This also happened in the manga, much to Leona's consternation (a feeling which is mutual).
I believe this was based on a manga. I haven't read it myself though so I don't know how far it goes.

The first manga is set directly after the events of the original OVA, and it is pretty good. The second one is even better, and was the basis for Tank S.W.A.T. 01 (which was the most disappointing OVA tbh). The manga is great if you can find it anywhere, with the second manga (Conflict) possibly even being the best of the franchise.
@@firestar1662 I know that Dark Horse Comics was the one who localized it, but it's going to be very hard (and very expensive) to find, considering it's been out of print for years. As it is, Amazon is selling a used copy for almost $50, well above the standard retail price for the same volume as listed on Dark Horse's website. And there's quite a few volumes of the manga, to boot.
I have not seen Tank S.W.A.T. 01, though. But I am interested in seeing it, even if it's not as good as the other ones. Still, I maintain that this world has the potential to be expanded upon into a full-on series, tackling issues that are very relevant today, namely the issues I mentioned in my original comment.
Just checked Wikipedia and it seems there were three OVA productions totaling 11 episodes altogether. The 1985 manga ran for about 9 months and had one volume, I’m not clear on the second manga but it looks like it was a one-shot published in ‘88 and there was another manga running in ‘92 for about 16 months, also one volume. Gonna have to add this to my list.

Watched the Tank Police movies on Canada's Sci-Fi channel when it was starting up in the 90's. They showed several animes like Ninja Scroll, Venus Wars among a few others introducing me to how diverse anime stories can be.
While I have watched both Tank Police movies, liked them both too, I'm still not 100% sure I understood what they were about, aside from their kick ass action sequences. Either it's been too long, or it's just how many animes were back them. ^_^

Look up "TIE Fighter - short film" of OtaKing Animation. He use loots of computer assist, but he can still capture the 80s style. He is a one man crew, image what a full studio can do.
