The IFT3 mishap report still isn't complete as far as we know so I think IFT4 might slip into June, but SpaceX are clearly making the most of this extra time with work on seemingly every aspect of Starbase.
Reminder that SpaceX lead the mis hap investigation. It can all be wrapped up in a few days like it was for flight 3
the previous IFT2 report was signed off pretty close to IFT3, it's only logical it's just a signature at this moment in time.
They always get approval like a day or so before the launch
The mishap report is written by SpaceX and merely approved by the FAA. This is the normal process with manufacturers who have earned the trust of the FAA. In other words not Boeing. Note that there are FAA engineers permanently assigned to SpaceX, and the required documentation is very well specified.
Just to pile on, as mentioned above, SpaceX does the actual investigation, and the FAA validates and verifies. But more importantly, the name 'report' might suggest that SpaceX produces a document and delivers it to the FAA, which they then review. In practice, it's more of a collaboration, where SpaceX and FAA produce the report to the satisfaction of all, with the 'submission' part just being the formal filing of findings. This is why the turnaround between the delivery of the report and approval is so short. This is also why the remediation steps specified in the report are usually already implemented when the report is filed - SpaceX can work with confidence because they already have an agreement that the remediation matches FAA requirements. The report just formalises what both parties already know and agree on.

I 100% agree about Highbay and Stargate getting demolished one day to make space for another Megabay but not just to take extra volume of output from Starfactory. Once Starship development gets to v3 the current Megabays won’t be tall enough to fully stack a v3 booster so I think any new Megabay that gets build will be a Megamegabay, even taller than the current Megabays and maybe also wider - perhaps space for 5 workstations along the back rather than the 3bin the current Megabays - to reflect the fact that by v3 time it would be the only building where a booster could be fully stacked.

SpaceX is earning billions every year. The major flaw with almost all of the "competition" for SpaceX is that they are totally focussed on a single requirement from a single customer, for example NASA, JAXA, ISRO, or ESA. That single customer has enormous political baggage. Its requirements are not really designed for a free competition. For example the specifications for the SLS, and for the Constellation Program before that, were that it *must* use all of the suppliers that built the Space Transportation System, popularly known as the Shuttle. SpaceX has refused to accept *any* development money from NASA precisely to avoid politicians telling them how to build a rocket. Musk recognizes the engineering know how of his "competitors" and happily congratulates them on their successes, secure that they will not challenge the profitability of SpaceX for years to come because they are focussing on already obsolete markets. SpaceX has already factored the assumption that Boing and the United Losers Alliance will handle six crew deliveries to the ISS, and DreamChaser will get six cargo deliveries to the ISS, into its plans because SpaceX will need all of its Dragons to support the commercial space stations that will be rapidly deployed over the next six years, and Boing/ULA will lose money on every single flight and be unable to make a competitive bid for launching or servicing the commercial stations where they will not have a political advantage. As long as the shareholders of Boing and ULA and BO and Arianespace are willing to accept the losses of BILLIONS by the decisions of the executive teams they elect, then they will survive.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have a spot in Mega Bay 2 where they eventually store a two-point lifter that basically never leaves the bay.
I also expect it to be fully automated and not require human intervention.
SpaceX needs to have quite a few successful captures at the Virtual Tower out at sea before it risks potential damage or destruction of the real tower. 😂✌
The only problem I fear is that if the cause of previous engine failure is not thoroughly solved, we could see an engine fail while hovering between the chopsticks.
I expect that the oxygen tank is filled with CO2 and H2O ices due to the current design of Raptor V2. Those ices are contaminants that may clog the filters at the LOX engine inlets, or cause valves to stick.
I suspect Raptor V4 is using a clean way to vaporize O2 for autogenous pressurization. Hopefully, the stage-zero ground system will survive until then.

During hovering only about three out of thirteen inner engines are firing, and they are at no more than 50% thrust. This is not a situation in which failure is likely. If it does the booster can always increase the thrust of the other two engines, or fire up one of the ten idle engines.
Unless you have experience in engineering do not speculate.
Personally the odds of a successful virtual landing in the Gulf are still less than 50% and until they have an almost completely successful virtual landing SpaceX will not try on the tower. Note that recent simulated videos show the booster approaching at an angle from the sea toward the OLIT. That means that at any point SpaceX can abort out over the Gulf.

The present design of Raptor used on these test flights have two different methods to supply autogenous pressure. The pure methane is circulated around through the 3D printed channels in the combustion chamber walls and nozzle throat. Pure hot methane gas pressurizes the methane tank.
The oxygen autogenous pressure system is supplied, tapped off, from the oxygen preburner. So there is CO2 and H2O byproducts coming from here. This is not speculation.
I'm sure this design is already made obsolete by the next generations of Raptor. Hopefully, the next Raptor version is already using heat exchangers to pressurize the oxygen tank with pure hot O2 gas. But will these be used on IFT-4 or IFT-5?
Images from the SkySpy..., pardon, SkyWatch are great! I had to wait several months to see the landing ones (LZ1 and LZ2) at the Cape Canaveral on Google Earth, so even if you have to wait a few days, is great. After the IFT-3 we, the space lovers, have become more and more demanding and I guess that the SpaceX folks noticed that. IFT-4 will be once more the Best Show in Town, also thanks to you NSF!!! Beeeeeeee excellent ... (you know the rest) 😊

SpaceX should use their high crane and a old booster to make a dry run catch test they can simulate a booster hover and close the arms to catch lock it in while the crane is holding the booster, this would be fun to watch

I'd enjoy someone talking about the automation system that I speculate will be controlling the chop sticks when catching boosters and ships. How is that going to work? Will there be rf beacons on the catch points and some rf receivers on the chopsticks? Something else for the computers to control the chopsticks during a catch? Computer vision? Do they expect a human operator to manually control and catch vehicles?

I keep wondering how much dynamic loading are the chopstick arms and tower designed to handle. I'm guessing current design is the booster or Starship is lowered gently into the resting position before the rocket motors shutdown. If thrust were to fail when lowering into position, how much of a drop can the chopsticks/tower handle without damage or failure?
If the Chopsticks come under the same ratings as that for a crane, which is twice the maximum weight, i.e a crane rated for 10 tonne must be able to hold a static weight of 20 tonne, then as long as the thrust failure does not allow it to drop more than 200mm, it should hold. Not much room for error.

Hopefully once Starship has a human crew onboard. We will get televised live views of them in earth orbit for a week, simulating an orbital mission to the moon and back. Would be awesome to see Starships forward command center and other designated crew areas.

Every week is more exciting.
One thing that concerns me is how those hard chopsticks rails will soft catch boosters/ships... The ship/booster "nipple" crushing in that hard rail will be tough. It will certainly damage ship/booster structure. I think they will have to come with a better idea. I imagine a kind of a steel cable, offset from the chopstick structure, that would soft catch the "nipples" and transfer the load to the cable (with some spring/pneumatic system). Like two bow arcs on each side of the chopsticks. And when the load was transfered to the cables, then it would soft lay the load to the hard rail. What do you think?
The top of each [massive] chopstick arm has a (relatively) lightweight _boom_ that can handle a low velocity downwards collision. There are [vertical] linkages, springs, and hydraulic pistons within each boom [allowing it to make rather rapid vertical adjustments].
The hard-points for mating to the booster are carried on a horizontal track [on top of the boom] that is supposed to rush into position, tracking the booster hard-points. (It also provides the means of adjusting the booster to orient over the launch mount.)
It's the responsibility of the ship and booster to hover accurately while the arms close snugly. Then the booster descends and/or the arm [boom] rises.
BTW, the Chinese space agency published a video of a booster catchment system using horizontal cables that rapidly slew into position beside the descending booster. Have you seen it? It maybe was released on April 1st...
@@imconsequetau5275 I see. But I think it is a massive hard structure too close to the heatshield tiles... It will certainly damage them. But what you described should work... In my opinion it is too much high tech. I was thinking more like an carrier boom... Like those that stop fighter jets. Anyway. We will see. Fingers crossed!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the elephant in the room.... V2 and V3 Booster and Starship stack are taller. Thus Launch Tower 2 will need at least 2 more tower segments.

Hey, Jack, great update as always! Next time you show that overhead of the garage construction, can you outline it in red? I could not for the life of me locate it. :)
It was outlined very briefly in red. It took me two viewings to see it. It was especially confusing since Jack said it was next to the Rocket Garden. It’s actually next to the Stargate building.
I really think it would be a good idea, if they waited till the second launch tower is built, and they should move to version 2 boosters before a catch… but if they want to go for it by all means. But it’s going to be a set back and a long time before any starship gets launched if the only tower they have gets f*cked… MORE LAUNCHES, NO SET BACKS. Especially if you’re going to have star factory cranking out 3 ships a day…
at 5:00, is that a saw cut through the wall on the left side that indicates how much more of the wall is due to come down?
One point I have made before and otgers do not see my reasoning , is why there will not be two lower chop stick arms to aid the catching of booster. If booster cones in at an angle and is clearly balancing on the power from the motors, what will stop the booster swing like a pendulum from the upper arms when the motors cut off.

It's all good and well getting the tiles right, but what have they done to stop the ships rotation in space so it reenters correctly with tiles facing down (earth)?
How many million dollars have they wasted destroying things they built? Lack of a plan doesn't exactly give me long term confidence in the entire enterprise. But it is fun to watch, as long as it isn't my money they are wasting.
For starship v3, it's going to be taller, so wondering if the launch tower and megabay will also be increased in height.

They don’t own land between them. In order to build a rail line or expand existing roads would require lengthy environmental & bureaucratic reviews and would likely require subcontractors approved by government agencies. In other words it will take SpaceX less time to get to Mars than for such a thing to be built.
I suspect that there will soon be a wall at the new test stand to protect anyone foolish enough to be fishing in the river during a live fire test.
NSF would it benefit @SpaceX to dimple the tiles on Starship like a golf ball? Both from an aerodynamics friction perspective, and also from a heat transfer during re-entry perspective.

@@slowpoke3102 SpaceX is mostly funded by Elon and by Starlink. They do have some contracts with NASA that reimburse them for certain limited scope studies and hardware development.
Most of SpaceX’s customers are private companies and non-US government agencies.
