  • Bikepacking gear works for more than just dirt and gravel riding. After decades of road touring with
traditional panniers on a heavy steel-frame bike, I'm switching to a carbon road bike fitted with a climbing cassette and bikepacking gear, dropping 39 pounds of weight compared to my former touring rig. How will it perform? Come along for the ride to find out!
Here is a list of some of the gear (or newer versions) shown in this video. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.:

Maynard, I want to thank you for this and the previous video (installation)! I too am at that point where having more choices is really good. Appreciate both video's and wish you well.

Nice ride! I watched your video where you installed this new cassette. so I have a question and hoping you can provide some insight. I am doing a complete build and upgrade on a 88 Panasonic road bike with ultegra grupos and it will be very nice for the road. however I also have a 1990 Giant Yukon MTB. I wanted to put the Tiagra 4700 group set with dropbars on this mountain bike with an 50/34t on front and 11/42 cassette on the rear like you have. this is not for touring but simply to have a nice gravel bike for doing rides off payment. Will this set up work? if I rebuild my wheel set with a hub that runs the 11 to 42 cassette, it seems that I should be able to run that with the Tiagra group set without any issues. any insight that you can provide will be appreciated. I am in the middle of painting the road bike frame, so all of the building stuff is somewhat new to me.

Hi Tim - congratulations on your bike build. It's a lot of work but very rewarding in the end. I don't see why your plan with the Tiagra groupset wouldn't work, with a caveat. If the rear derailleur is the ss model you'll definitely need a Wolf Tooth Roadlink (or similar hanger extender) and you may need it if it's a gs too - not sure about that one. With either derailleur you'll be exceeding its capacity with those gear combinations though, so you'll have to be careful about avoiding cross chaining just like me. Your chain wrap capacity is the same as mine - 47. (42-11) + (50-34) = 31+16=47. And the capacity of the RD-4700gs is 39, while the ss is 33. As you saw in my cassette install video, it can still work but you won't have the full range of gear combinations available to you. In my case, cross chaining from the 50t chainring to two or three of the largest cassette cogs would rip the derailleur right off my bike. I'm ok with that because I never cross chain in that direction. But you have to decide if that will work for you.

@@MTMiser That is very very helpful information. I can either go with a smaller cassette or just stay within the range that it will work. My only other dilemma now is dealing with weather I rebuild and stay with 26 and 1/2-in rims and figure out what I will do for brakes. I have cantilever brakes on there now. I am pretty sure that I can put 700c rims on there, but the Tiagra v brakes state they only support up to a 32 tire. if I want this for a gravel bike, I would imagine I will need bigger than 32 so I think the Tiagra road v brakes that come with the group set would not work. again thank you for your previous response and if you have any insight on my brakes I will take your advice.

@@flyinlo1474 I'm surprised those v brakes won't support anything bigger than a 32 tire. I have a pair of Shimano V-brakes on my Specialized Hard Rock which at one point had 26" x 2" tires (approx. 51 mm width) and had no trouble at all. I don't know how big gravel tires are but you might check some of the bike forums for info or maybe just do a search on Amazon and see what you come up with. Best of luck...

Hi Maynard, i just subscribed, i was wondering could i fit that 42-11 cassette to my 48-36-26 chainring, i have a long rear derailleur, would i need that wolftooth, cheers

Hi Phil - in order to be able to use every possible gear combination with the 42-11 and your current chainring setup your derailleur will need to have a chain wrap capacity of 53 links. You will need to look up your model on the manufacturer's site to get that spec. But I'm not sure if there's actually a derailleur made that will wrap that many links. If it falls short, you could probably still make it work in much the same way mine works in this video - giving up some gear combinations that you'd probably never use anyway (cross chaining the large chainring to larger cassette gears). The risk is ripping the derailleur off the bike if you forget and try to shift into those big cassette gears while in the large chainring. As far as the Wolf Tooth, I'm not sure. You'd probably have to try it first to see. If you get the same cassette that appears in this video (link in description) it came with a hanger extender, although it was a different brand (not Wolf Tooth). It does not say that in the ad's description though, so hopefully they're still including that.
