It's really not lol. Don't get me wrong, it's a great free kick scored by an excellent player, but it's not the best free kick goal ever. That was a straight shot, it wasn't from an angle. CR7's free kick vs Arsenal in the 2009 Champions League semi-final was better- it was 40 yards out, not 30, and it was from an angle.

Not in history but back in the 1990s and early 2000s. It was indeed very rare to find footballers who master curvy shots
Pro fooballer knew to shoot powerfully and on target in a more or less straight line and knew how to lob. And it pretty much was considered complete skills
Since mid 2000s it changed tho. Since lot of football players were teached how to curve a shot
Before that only a small number of pro footballers mastered the curvy shots skills

Barthez is not guilty. The goal was pure art!
When you see it from the side angle it is strange that Barthez doesn't move. Then you see it from the front angle and you realise it was going 10 feet wide and curled in at 200mph.
Barthez was well overrated tho.

I love watching from the different angles. There's one at around 0:50 where the camera follows the ball and if you freeze frame it at 0:52, the goalpost isn't even in the picture. It looks like the ball is heading to row Z of the stand. And then it's suddenly in the back of the net. Magic.

Using a unique technique with an amazing goal lead to his name being what we call those free kicks
If I were to nominate the best goal in the history of the universe, it would be this one! Everything is just perfect: the way he positions the ball, the way he runs up to it, the way the ball flies defying the laws of physics, the way it hits the post and the goalkeeper can only watch helplessly.
it drives me mental when goal keepers don’t drive from shots, free kicks etc. but in this case Barthez never stood a chance in hell
When Carlos steps up for the free kick, you step down!
...from Barthez' point of view, it was going wide. Maybe he would've gotten to it if he dove left right away but don't blame him for thinking it was going wide.
@@clopez4280 yeah that ball was 2-3 yards past the post but suddenly curved in a split second
To be fair Barthez was a pretty damn good keeper and they won mudial next year
Exactly, it usually happens in Cr7's cases when goal keeper do not bother to dive 😅😅. But this shot was out of this world ❤️
Human experience has peaked. We've already seen the best of everything. I watched this on the television as it was kind of happening. That makes me special.
Dear dear ! I don't believe it, what a goal we've just seen from Roberto Carlos, that is amazing !
Certainly the best free kick I've ever seen in my lifetime. Jaw dropping stuff.

On the 24th anniversary of this outrageous free kick, this video has reached 500,000 views. Thank you Roberto Carlos for this gem of football history! ❤️
If I had to choose the GOAT left back, Roberto Carlos would be my pick. He was on a different league. What a legend. And it seems that he's also has a fantastic personality. 👏🇧🇷
Look how carefully he places the ball ! The fact that his team mates allowed him to attempt this speaks volumes......will never be matched !!
Talvez, ninguém esperava algo tão bem executado. Mas todos que o conheciam, esperavam que poderia sair algo interessante da cobrança. Uma lenda das cobranças de longa distância.
My favourite goal of all time. It was actually close to 40 yards not 30, the audacity to even attempt it is ridiculous, when do you ever see defenders set up a wall for a free kick that far out? They all knew his intent, they were all prepared. But there was nothing anyone could do to stop that absolute screamer of a shot from going in. Simply has to be the most perfect strike of all time.
That '' DEAR DEAR I DONT BELIEVE IT,WHAT A GOAL WE HAVE JUST SEEN'' always gives me chills

Even after all these years I find myself thinking "there's no way it was as crazy as I remember"....

When he places the ball, takes his stance, gauges the power of his kick, and the curve of the ball. it’s truly beautiful, like an art.
Hahaha it was like a movie. The suspense slowly built as he was walking back hahaha
You know a British commentator has seen something incredible when the first words out of his mouth are 'dear, dear'.
I was 14yrs old when this goal was scored, and EVERYONE in school the next day was talking about it. Think about how many 'greatest' debates there are in football, player, match, goal, team, defender, keeper etc. Most are passionately debated but this is almost universally recognized as the greatest free kick ever. The power and the swerve, Barthez stood no chance of saving it. I remember that the Sunday Times sport section were inspired to run an illustrated series of the greatest goals ever scored because of this.
And its incredible how people still come to look at it 23 years later!
You should check out Stan Collymore's commentary of Zlatans bicycle kick.
