  • At a time when the world depends on creative problem solvers, and when the looming threat of technology is forcing us to examine our human strengths, mathematics finds itself in need of an upgrade.
Mathematician turned educator Dr Junaid Mubeen shows that there is more to mathematics than symbol pushing and high-speed calculation. Dr Mubeen presents an alternative brand of the subject that is premised on patterns and logic, and is accessible to us all. Dr Junaid Mubeen is a research mathematician turned educator working at the nexus of education and innovation. Junaid is Director of Education at Whizz Education, where he oversees the educational strategy of the virtual tutoring platform, Maths-Whizz, which reaches hundreds of thousands of students worldwide. He also runs the Oxford Maths Club, delivering interactive maths courses to primary students. Junaid writes and speaks on a number of educational topics and is co-editor of the online publication, Q.E.D., which seeks to reimagine the learning and teaching of mathematics. He earned fleeting fame as a series winner of Countdown in 2008. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. True story .. .. I was extremely phobic to MATH ... Like really .. like really .... Then I had this teacher who constantly encouraged me with little things contrary to what I get at school... I practiced math just because of her . Then I started to do great ... I loved it .. guess what I got 10/ 10 GPA in the finals . I was beyond happy ... The important thing I just mention is I did not compare with others which initially I used to ... To all who are struggling with math ... Hiii ... I'm ex math phobic and I'm sure you can do well... Start with lil calculations ... Constantly practice lil things don't worry about time you take you'll gradually improve

The point he made was that math is not just about calculations but about coming up with creative solutions. New ways to solve a problem by recognising patterns. And this is what makes us human. If only I had the fortune to be taught by some good teachers who would've been willing to take the time to make math more relatable than just complete the syllabus. The teacher would solve a model question and then give a silimar problem which the students had to solve as quickly as possible. It felt like a race and I just accepted my insecurities as fact. My perspective on mathematics in school was very different from what it is now.

What got me to like math more was when it became easier because I was learning to understand the concepts as a whole instead of just memorizing steps (what I was doing before).

Math was always SO boring to me. I didn’t understand “why” I was being forced to learn it??? WHY? I always wanted to be a doctor...it took me until HS to realize math & science are so intensely related. If I had understood when I was 4 that understanding math would have given me the confidence to go to med school...I probably would have cared? No one even explained why I needed to know math..how it would benefit me...how spiritual it is...how beautiful & meaningful it can be? Well, it feels to late now but I still have fantasy’s of going back in time & being “good” at math...caring about math...understanding math. Thank you!

But that's not maths. Maths is much more complex, and whereas I was able to do simple calculations, I've been unable to go any further and maths was a torture to me when I was at school.

The worst mistake in teaching maths, and the one which causes many people to get mentally blocked out of algebra, is the failure to put across what an equation is and to build understanding around the equation. I hear too many maths teachers saying "put this here, and move that there.. " instead of saying "Add this to both sides of the equation, multiply both sides of the equation by that.." etc. etc. The concrete becomes abstract at which point many students are lost. Always teach from the concrete and specific to the abstract and general, never the other way around.

Maths is about solving problems and proving that your solution applies in all imaginable scenarios of that isolated problem.

Math surely comes more easily to some than others, but saying "some people are just not that good at maths", especially when people who read it also identify with it, may likely be harmful. But then again, this isn't quite what the talk was about. People struggling with math is fine to some degree, but people telling themselves they can't ever get any better is a small tragedy.

As a person with Dyscalculia, I’ve had a difficult relationship with maths over the years and the imposter syndrome has been intense over the years. I’ve always had a flair for subjects which things had to be memorised like Geography or History or answers had to be fleshed out and backed up like English. I’ve always been drawn to the financial aspect of life, keeping up with the markets and such and have envisioned myself in this type of career for a while so I will be pursuing the Chartered Accountancy exams in Ireland , a questionable choice you may think. I’m drawn to accountancy for one very simple reason - Assets - Liabilities = Equity, a very simple equation as the cornerstone of the subject.
Maths can be too complex for its own good and the pace that you are expected to understand and solidify knowledge is too quick, especially at second level education. I just wish people like the presenter and others would stop touting maths as something misunderstood. It can extremely disheartening and difficult for people like myself and others but not too say if you love it don’t pursue it. We should all pursue whatever we want to do, whether maths related or not.

    2. Math becomes easier when it's useful for a particular profession because you'll end up using that math often. This will keep it fresh in your head. Football players, chefs and construction workers are very good at the math they use in their professions for this reason.

    Arrogance.
"You weren' t bad at maths, you just weren't looking at it right". Reading that, I felt angry but listened. It got worse.
Dr Mubeen says he can see inside my head better than I can. "When people say they're bad at maths what they really mean is they're not able to shunt around symbols or perform mental arithmetic with speed and precision". Well, I'm bad at maths and when I say that, I know what I "really mean", thank you.
What deep-seated arrogance gives him the right to tell me and others like me what we "really" mean? What makes him think he can see inside our heads? I have tried and tried, but when I'm confronted with a problem in maths my mind goes blank. If I go on trying I feel a mental and even physical revulsion. Does Dr Mubeen know how that feels? I'm sure he doesn't. But he's oh, so certain that he knows what I and others "really mean".
I'm 68. Up to the age of about 10 I could do the simple arithmetic I was asked to do. I wasn't interested but I could do it. Then all through secondary school it was a downward spiral. Six years of a slow kind of torment, collecting bad marks and a feeling of the unfairness of it all. Why did I need to go through that when I never intended to do any maths afterwards?
Dr Mubeen and others obviously love maths: I loathed it, yet I was forced to endure it. Afterwards, as expected, I chose a career with practically no maths at all (journalism). But ever since, arrogant statements such as those made by Dr Mubeen and others have made me angry.

It’s a tragedy that school-math is often devoid of the creativity and beauties of mathematics, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that calculation skills aren’t vital. Gauss would have a hard time with 1+2+3+4+...100 if he didn’t know how to add two numbers or how to multiply by 50. If people are better at mental calculations they have an easier time noticing patterns that come up. The pythagorean theorem is noticeable if you can square and sum numbers.

So then you are left with 49 numberpairs of 100 and the middle (50) as well as the end (100), that don't have any number to bond with. Those nice numbers can then easily be added by anyone; 4900 + 100 + 50 :) it's just so beautiful in my opinion, especially because such nice numbers don't scare away anyone

      What type of programmer?
      1. Who knows syntax of many languages and (for example) can print/output statements in all of them.
      2. Who knows one or two language but can code literally anything in those languages with algorithms.
      I bet you are 1.

That's very well true. And it depends on a variety of things like what and how one learnt it and how much does one use in daily tasks + memory traits. But that's completely off the point. This is about trying to boost creativity and not just focusing on repeated number crunching. It's not about bringing everyone to the same level, but about encouraging problem solving!

Talk could have been more condensed with more examples but good job regardless on an important message worth sharing. To extend his point further, it's about genius, not numbers. Math is about discovery and innovation/creativity, it is logic and genius in their purest form. THIS is what TED should be about not the cringey virtue signalling circlejerk it's become.
