The first martyrs during the horrible Reign of Terror who were canonized as saints were The Martyrs of Compiègne, 16 tough-as-nails Carmelite sisters. As their thug guards unjustly ushered them to the guillotine, the sisters showed no fear, forgave their captors, and peacefully sang Laudate Dominum. Yep, Carmelite nuns are indeed the real deal.

@@treeannie8831 Yes! You might be talking about the movie “Dialogue with the Carmelites” (the English title; the movie is French), which is the story of the Martyrs of Compiègne. The film is based on the play of the same name, and the play is based on the original novella, which was written in German by Gertrud von Le Fort. You can find lots of clips of both the film and the play on UA-cam, and elsewhere online. Very moving indeed.

You love your inspiring spiritual books Father. In my youth I used to read the Catholic newspaper from church in the UK, called The Universe. In it there was a column every week by Monsignor Michael Buckley called, Father Michael. He would answer several questions sent in of problems people were facing and at the bottom was a 'good news' story. He had great devotion to the Holy Spirit and ran a healing ministry calling on the Holy Spirit to heal people that came to him. One 'good news' story was that of a Muslim family that came to his healing service. They said, "Look, we are Muslims but we have heard healing takes place here. Could you pray for our little boy? He has serious leukaemia." Father Buckley and his prayer team prayed over the boy. A week or so later the family returned with tears of joy. "Doctors are speechless. His cancer is completely gone!"
Father Michael wrote many books and did cassette tapes (in those days) about his ministry to help people. One book he wrote was called, "His Healing Touch". I'm sure you will like it Father Mark. It may not be available in usual places but his Catholic ministry was called El Shaddai (God of the mountain) which has its own website.
Fr Mark's videos are the perfect length for watching whilst relieving oneself on the bog.

Just got your book Hold My Beer. Loved it! What a great book.
My sister-in-law is a cloistered Carmelite. I knew her briefly before she became a nun, when she was just a teenager... Even as a teenager she was above and beyond... She would sleep on the floor next to her bed as a sacrifice. I don't think I ever heard her complain once when asked to do anything around the house, and her list of chores were very long, at her request of course. She would stay up long into the night to pray. She gave up all of her cd's and movies (unheard of for most teenagers). She was truly an inspiration, and continues to be one to me today. We feel immeasurably blessed to have her praying for us and the world each and every day!
Don't mess with Carmelite priests, either! I go to a Carmelite Church. They're the best.
In my local Carmelite church in London UK, the holy water has gone, and has been replaced with bottles of chemical hand sanitiser. People entering are required to use this, register their details in a 'track and trace' book, wear a muzzle, and practice 'social distancing'. It's only a matter of time before they will only allow the fully jabbed to enter (as is already the case now with some other public places, and the prime minister has suggested that churches may be amongst the places where the vack,scene will be necessary). It feels more like a sterile clinic now rather than the house of God. Is it like this in your Carmelite church too? Personally, I now prefer to pray alone elsewhere.

There was a woman in my town that lost her dog. I offered to put up a money reward for the dog’s return to entice people to help look. We did not know each other but I had reached out to her. She asked me why was I willing to do this? I told her I was Catholic 😀

I had reading in parts right now I got it early. I read Hold My Beer in 1 sitting I was laughing so hard sometimes my very senior mom came in an d said is everything ok, I said ok just reading a funny part of a book. I was picturing who the characters were on you tube. And the story line.

The only criticism would be, you can't use demons as a source of truth. But overall good spiritual lessons worth immatating.
Complaining can be useful: use it as a tool to complain to Guardian Angel, to Jesus, to Mary, to the Saints... those who can help you direct your complaints to the right department. They can direct you as to the righteousness of your complaint. They can console you regarding the difficulties. They can help you turn your complaints into prayers. They can help you learn to talk with God. Ultimately, they help you/me learn to laugh at the complaint.
It’s such a good idea to turn complaints into prayers. It’s also good to turn temptations into prayers.
My maternal grandmother chose to be dressed as a Carmelite nun as her mortuary clothing. My mother has a first cousin who is a Carmelite nun. Aunt Irene Campos Albala. She's one year younger than my mom. If she's still alive, I know that she's in a nuns retirement home in Spain. They were very mischievous together as young girls, but then she had tuberculosis, and because antibiotics had just begun to exist to save her life, and her family was able to get them, she saw it as a miracle, and decided to consecrate her life to Jesus Christ and become a Carmelite nun. She's definitely fits the level headed tough description. They all are and were. My mother's generation and the two mothers of them all. My aunt Irene named after her mother, my grandmother's older sister. Can/could be very loving, caring, do so much to make others happy, take so much pride in their very hard work, but also level headed tough, yet great senses of humor. We all used to laugh so much together at any kind of family gatherings.

This just goes to show how tricky our emotions and motivations can be . I would think that psychology often misses what is going on .
The Carmelites, or Brothers of the Order of the most blessed Mother of God and ever virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, have claimed an organic descent from hermits living on that mountain under the direction of Elias and Eliseus. There history began in 1155, when a pilgrimage of western men was founded there by Saint Berthold.
The hermits spread to Europe and under a Kentishman, Saint Simon Stock, modified their life and became mendicant friars. The reforming activity of Saint Teresa and Saint John of the Cross in the 16th century resulted in two independent branches of the order.
The nuns of the order, founded in 1452 with papal sanction under the "mitigated" rule then in force, spread rapidly, producing among other saints Mary-Magdalen de Pazzi (1607).
the nuns live in poverty, and have strict enclosure, limited numbers, perpetual abstinence, and silence (except two hours recreation), choir office, mental prayer, and manual work. Habit: same as the friars, with linen wimple and black veil.

Reading the entirety of the Bible to my children. Three chapters a night, we've read entirely the new testament and our on 2 Chronicles.
Reading the Hobbit.
Reading Eragon.
Reading when calls the heart.
And the book given to me by the catholic priest, 20 catholic customs and their biblical origins.

I just received this book a couple of days ago and I can't put it down! I am learning so much about how to be a Saint and how to resist the evil one's temptations! I am so inspired by Sister Maryam's life! I love our Blessed Mothers advice: "Always be content!"

Fr. Mark, can you please explain how temptation works? Do demons have power of suggestion over humans? How are demons allowed to enter into our minds to place temptations there? Has God given them authority to do this? If this is so, then why aren't good angels doing the opposite and putting good thoughts into our minds?
Also, why don't we have the ability to see our tormentors? Why are they allowed power into the human realm to make mischief? At least Adam and Eve saw the serpent in corporeal form.
I believe the demons can manipulate the energy (chi) in the body. So this is one way they can manipulate us. They suck energy from us as well, and when our energy is dragged down to a lower level so then also will our thoughts be on a lower level.
Another thing they can do is to 'tickle' our energy/body when we are doing things. For example if sitting still then it can tickle/agitate the energy in our leg so that we feel restless and want to get up and move around. So that means we might have been in a more peaceful state of mind, or with patience, but then we lose that more 'graceful' state.
Maybe it could also mean that if we are sleeping and our energy has been dragged down to a lower level then maybe that will change how our dreams go - like maybe to more fearful states of mind (nightmares or dreams that play on our fears, whatever they are).
I am not sure if I believe in angels because I have not detected them. However it could be that they are helping in some way. They could act more like 'energies', and maybe we have to tune into those more positive energies/virtues (compassion, love, gratitude to god, patience, stillness). I guess most of us cannot detect them, but maybe we would notice the difference if we were in hell and angels did not operate there! But maybe they can still help even if a person is in hell/purgatory.
As to your question about demons being 'allowed' - my view is simply that it is down to free will, and that includes the demons as well. So they can do what they like, and if we do not stop them ourselves then they can take over and/or have their influence. I think people need to learn to discern where the demons/spirits are, and what they are doing, and at all times.
You have asked some important and interesting questions.
Makes me want to put more effort against complaining.

Popeye the kind Our Lady gave to Saint Catherine Labouré. It says « O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee ». Lots of promises of conversion. Saint Benedict protects us from natural disasters. A friend put one at each corner of her land we had a plague of caterpillars she did not get one caterpillar on her land. The roads were greased with them.

ASPIRATIONS TO THE SACRED HEAD OF OUR BLESSED LORD
My Lord and my God, humbly prostrate before Thee, I adore Thy Sacred Head as the Seat of Divine Wisdom, the Shrine of the Powers of Thy Most Holy Soul and Intellectual Faculties, and the centre of the Five Senses of Thine adorable Body.
When I gaze into the depths of this fathomless abyss of Goodness, Power and Wisdom, which has contrived and instituted such unheard of ways and means of proving Thine infinite Love, and lavishing Thy choicest gifts upon me, Thy poor child, I am lost in astonishment and admiration.
O Light of lights, in whose glorious rays I see fresh mines of Wealth in the Sacred Heart; O Sun of Justice, in whose intense heat I feel the burning Love that consumes the Sacred Heart.
Oh! By the shining light of Thine Eyes, teach me to see Thee in all things; and by Thine Ears, which are ever open to the prayers of the needy, grant that I may ever hear the voice of Thy Church, and listen to Thy holy inspirations.
