Testing Tamron's 150-500mm Lens For Sony in Alaska

- The New Tamron 150-500 for Sony E mount cameras is a fantastic lens for anyone photographing wildlife and more. How well does it perform in the wilds of Alaska?
Really really well. Tamron has added vibration compensation to the 150-500 which makes a huge difference on a telephoto lens like this. The image quality is excellent all the way through the zoom range and across almost all apertures. The 150-500 feels great to hold when used on a sony camera like the A7III, A7sIII, A9II, and on the Sony A1. Overall Tamron has added an excellent telephoto lens for Sony cameras to their already impressive line of lenses.

Dammit. Now I have to get my ass off the couch and go filming/photograph something in the morning. I have a love/hate relationship with awesome vids like this.
ahahahahahah then my work here is done!
This video deserves way more likes than it has. I never saw any other youtuber got on a plane in Alaska just to review a lens. This is hardcore. Respect.
Thank you!
Great review Jake photos coming out of that lens were amazing. Love watching videos & photos from Alaska its such a beautiful place.
Thank you!
Already ordered mine, arrived today and then your video jumped at me. As always, great to see an outdoor review of the lens without much of the talk already seen by so many other UA-camrs. Your work is highly appreciated.
A bit terrified though of you holding it out the airplane window without any kind of strap but I guess that's what the wildness of Alaska does to you.
Awesome! thank you very much and yes the thought of dropping the lens the entire time I was holding it out the door was VERY much in my mind lol
Love your channel, awesome pictures, I enjoy so much your image quality and content, thanks!
Thank you so much!!
Awesome Video, and Excellent Pictures!! Thank You Jake!!
Thank you so much!
Great video Jake!!! Just all incredible shots.
Thank you so much Agent J!!!
You are amazing Jake. Professional in every way. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you Al!!
Thanks Jake. Was really looking forward to this review, and all but confirms this is my next lens in my bag.
glad to hear it
Incredible terrain. I love your reviews of lenses while in the wilderness. You actually show how good the lens is, the picture quality and the urge to get out and shoot. It's not so much the lens but using your camera gear. Have to say I'm more and more impressed by the great products Sigma and Tamron are producing.
Thank you so much
Jake, very inspiring video and photo shots. I just got my new Tamron 150-500 and I am very excited after seeing your Alaska's gorgeous video. Good job, Rodrigo.
Awesome and thank you
Gosh just some amazing stuff here! Looks amazing and you got to play with an A1 Oooooo.....so jealous! Such a great video! Very great colors too!
Thanks Paul!!
Great stuff, Jake. You're getting really good at that impossible "self portrait in a kayak from a drone" shot. Amazing and successful concentration of effort and skill.
thank you very much Peter!!
Another great video! This lens is definitely on my wish list.
Thanks Jaqueline!!
Fantastic review thank you. We are heading to Alaska this August and definitley will look into adding this to my lineup.
Awesome! Have a great trip up here!!
Love it in how many situations you tested that lens. Great review
Thanks!
Been waiting for this one!!!
I hope it didn't disappoint! This lens certainly has been a blast to shoot with!
Love your channel, bro!! Fabulous photography! Especially the shots of the planes, and one good looking pilot!! 😬 Looking forward to hanging out with you guys in AK sometime.
Thanks Don!! Yeah that one pilot is a pretty good dude! Can't wait to hang out
thanks for this review. Really well made. cheers
Thank you
Hey Jake, looks pretty warm up your end of the planet. Wish I had the opportunity to visit again. The Tamron lens looks pretty good, another great video keep up the great work.
Thanks Peter!! I appreciate it
Awesome video & pics Jake! Although, I am not sure if its the scenery, your superb skill set, or the lens itself deserves the credit for the awesomeness factor.
LOL thank you so much! The lens definitely made this video and the pictures possible.
Just picked mine up today…so far I’m loving it and I’m super jealous ..shooting in Alaska from a plane. Nice footage.
Fantastic and you definitely should plan to visit sometime!
Great video! Tamron was able to get me (I'm one of their Image Masters) my copy in late May for a trip I was taking to Wyoming and Alaska. I would agree with your review, it performed so well. I was down in Chinitna Bay, Homer and Seward shooting wildlife from the ground and boats. My success rate was higher than I have ever done with my DSLRs. Again great review!
Thanks David!! I got this lens in late may as well and then took it everywhere lol. My success rate went way up on this for air to air stuff. next time you come to Alaska let me know! it would be great to meet up
@@JakeSloan I am scheduled end of next June-early July. Then hopefully again in September. I was talking with the folks at Tamron last week and I was telling them how much I appreciated your approach to the reviews. It would be great to meet up.
WOWZERS. Now your talking. Please do more of these! 🙏🙏🙏🙏 It can't always be about drones right? Lol. I love channels that are deverse! Thx bud
Mikey
Thanks Mikey! I plan to do more like this in the future.
I envy you and the beautiful country you get to film. Good review. I have one on the way. Can't wait!
Hope you enjoy it!
I'm really digging Tamrons offerings. With my APS-C body, I could go from 11mm all the way up to 500mm with just 4 of their zooms.
me too! it's amazing what they have been releasing
Love your stories, Jake!
Thanks Dan!
Not sure if I’ve asked this question, but have you used the Sony 75-350mm aps-c lens on the a7IV? I need to purchase a telephoto and it’s down to one of these two. For me, weight is an issue since I might be older than that other fellow in this video. 😂
Wow, just wow
Thanks!
Great video Jake! Thanks for the deep dive - also love your livestreams. For run and gun work (not too different from this content) would you prefer the 70-180mm? Or does the extra reach on this make it worth lugging around.
Kinda torn between the two..the constant aperture makes me think the 70-180mm would work better for my manual style of shooting video (never shoot in auto aperture/shutter). But man, that 500mm hard to disregard. Thanks!
I love the 70-180 for run and gun. I would start there personally. Unless you are really into wildlife stuff
@@JakeSloan thanks man. Just picked up the 70-180 and really dig it. Got some great skateboarding shots already (funny how the a7siii takes such great photos..) and my wrist thanks me it’s not twice as heavy haha. Appreciate your feedback and help with making the decision.
Top vidéo !
Thanks!
Love mine. Was one of the first owners in Austria.
Fantastic!!
great video man.. love the sample pictures.. u exploit the lens to the fullest :) i have the tamron trinity just wanted to have such zoom range .. whats your thought on 100-400 sigma which one is better
I hear its great but I haven't used it yet so I really can't say
another great and honest video :) Alaska reminds me a lot of Norway :). what I want to alk today is : What drone are you using there ? seem better than a mavic 2, and the lense you are using on Vlog is ? thanks again. regards from Norway .
Greetings!! I think Alaska and Norway are quite similar. For this video I was using the DJI Air 2s and for the handheld vlogging lens I was using the Tamron 17-28. Cheers!!
Thanks for the review. Alaska is incredibly beautiful and that Tamron lens definitely looks "budget" to me. Will hold out for the upcoming Sigma or fork over $2k for the Sony.
glad I could help!
you look like the actor from the tv series “Greatest American Hero” I was like, wow, he retired from acting and became a pro photographer. Beautiful pics.
Lol thanks
If you have the A1, why did you choose to use the A9ii in the plane instead of the A1? Do you wish that you had the extra 100mm that you are missing compared to the 200-600?
I don’t have the A1 or A9 both were just for specific shoots I had then and I was able to use the bodies for the parts of this video as well.
Thanks for this great video, Jake. I'm a newbie videographer and I still can't decide between this Tamron 150-500 and Sony 200-600. Will the Tamron 150-500 survive in a harsh environment like in a beach, light rain, and tropical humidity? Especially considering its external barrel design.
In that case you might want to go for the Sony. I’ve had no issues with my tamron but Sony are pretty bullet proof
Would love to see a comparison with the Sigma 200-600! Wonderful video... Would so love to live there. My Submarine visited Ketchikan once and I've always wanted to go further North!
Nice!!! I’ll have to see if I can get my hands on one of those to test and compare
Great review. Did you shoot all in Aperture priorities?
I shoot in manual and set my aperture and shutter to what I want and then usually have the ISO on auto.
Thx!!!! How's the focus breathing and focus range, for video especially?
I haven't had the chance to test the focus breathing yet but there is definitely some there
Awesome
Thanks!
This is next on my list. I have just bought the sigma 24-70mm.
Awesome this will make a great pairing
On a sony A7 M3: what is the best solution? Tamron 150-500mm or Lens sony 100-400 4.5-5.6 lens + sony focal multiplier also 1.4 ?? this is for sports photos Thank you
I’d probably look at the Sony for that
I watched this a few months ago but didn’t comment. I have the Tamron 70-300, it’s a great inexpensive lens that gets used far more than I expected. I also have the Sony 100-400 GM, also a terrific lens but if I have a long hike it stays home in favor of the Tamron. I have rented the nice Sony 200-600 G but found it to be a bit unwieldy and difficult for me to master. I may try out this 150-500 Tamron it might just cover both zoom ranges for me. Thanks, useful fair unbiased review.
You’re welcome! Definitely see if you can rent one for a few days and see if it fits your needs! For hiking this is pretty heavy so personally I don’t take it with me very often. They also just released a firmware update that pretty dramatically improves autofocus performance
Been using this lens at my cabin pointed at Denali. Also tried it for focusing on the moon. Seems like no matter what I do it will not focus on these distant objects. It may say it's in focus (mounted on Fuji X-T4), but never. Evening with manual focus... no luck. Any thoughts? I've never experienced this sort of headache with any other lens.
Great video by the way.
they did release a firmware update recently that really helps with focus! but it sounds like your lines might be out of calibration?
Have you used the sigma 100-400?
How does it compare with this in terms of weight? Is having the extra 100mm worth the extra weight?
I haven't used that lens yet
Hey Jake would you recommend this over the Sigma 150-600 for A7iii. Where I live Sigma is cheaper by 150$ dollars than Tamron. Some say Sigma has slower af than Tamron what's your take
I would say either will do well but I haven’t used the sigma so I cannot comment on it’s quality.
@@JakeSloan thanks for your reply I'm short on budget for 200-600 but some people say wait and get the 200-600 would you also recommend the same?
Jake. Is the reviewed Tamron 150 - 500 compatible with a Sony A7rii? Thanks. Jim
Yes it is!
Yip and thanks
does anyone know if this 150-500mm lens compatible with sony x2 or x1.5 teleconverter ? thanks
It is not unfortunately
Thoughts on this lens vs the 50-400mm? (With the a7siii)
for low light definitely this lens, for wildlife stuff definitely the 50-400
Thanks - yes, I am interested in Wildlife.... and am considering the 50-400m... just concerned the reach is not enough, but it's certainly more managable.
Is this len 150-500mm better for low light?@@JakeSloan
sorry I through you had commented on a different video lol. for wildlife I would get this lens, the extra reach is very useful for wildlife. the 50-400 is great if you need to save some size and weight.
Which is better tam 150600mm vs sony 200600mm for a7iii
I haven't used the 200-600 yet so I can't say unfortunately
ey jake if everything goes well I will be in anchorage with a few buddies in 3 days, iT would awesome to have a dji mini 2 meet lmao
Awesome! hit me up on instagram or twitter!!
at 7:21 it looks like you are marching over to give the viewers a bollocking :-) (probably should clarify - UK speak for "telling off"). Lovely shots and jealous of where you get to go out and take pictures too.
LOL yeah I was a bit stern looking!
All the photos are blurry
Maybe you should check your UA-cam settings.
@@JakeSloan I'm watching your video at 4K and many of the photos are blurry.
In particular the photos beyond 3-400mm.
It’s not an Alaskan hiking trip unless someone is packin heat.
LOL safety first
"The autofocus is so fast" - respectfully the images you are showing to demonstrate autofocus are quite blurry. The lens also looks soft at 500mm.
The tundra swan sequence at 6:46 is a good example - only the second (out of 4 shown) is sharp.
Maybe you can do better in the same circumstances… moving airplanes moving boats all handheld
@@JakeSloan I'm talking about the lens, not what is behind it, no need to get offended. The images are objectively blurry and do not demonstrate "fast autofocus"
A more comprehensive review could cover images taken from a stationary vantage point to remove the condition that "they were taken from a moving vehicle", to truly demonstrate the capabilities of the lens. Otherwise this comes off as another pointless uncritical UA-cam gear review meant to drive traffic to your affiliate links.
cheers man... there are a lot of examples of images on a tripod and handheld in this video. If you want to pick out a few that aren’t perfect I have lots more examples for you lol. I feel I showed what is possible with this lens and quite a few different camera bodies.

Lol
A7siii has better color photos Lol the A1 is classic Sony green color not cool
you can edit them to your taste but yeah Ive been way happy with the A7sIII for photos
