Hi Adam, Nice to hear from you! Don’t worry I have no plans to remove the video anytime soon. I had to remove it for a while to shorten the introduction segment following your suggestions. I hope it’s short enough now? I also added a lot of additional content that makes the video even longer then the first version. Frazetta knew so much about art that even a 3 hour video is not long enough to show all the things that can be found in his art. I learned a lot from his art in the making of this video and so will everyone else who see’s it. His art is incredible and what a great guy he was to!

I'm really glad i found this video. There's more knowledge in this 3 hour video than a dozen other online courses. You're the first person I've heard go in depth about shapes, composition, etc. And you're right most online courses only vaguely talk about what you do.

I know his color paintings pack the biggest wallop, but there's something absolutely magical to Frazetta's pen and ink drawings. I'm glad we got more examples of them in this video.

Amazing video! Thank you so much for this! It is funny how much we don't learn at art school. BTW, about the six-pack, the tendinous inscriptions on the rectus abdominis muscle vary between people. Some people have 6 pack, some have 8 pack, some have 4 pack, some 2 pack, and very few people have no packs, making the stomach look smooth no matter how hard they exercise. For some people it can be asymmetrical, like having 3 inscriptions on the left and 2 on the right giving a 7 pack, or it can be an even number but different shapes and sizes giving an asymmetrical look. This is obvious when watching bodybuilding competitions.
Can you recommend any classic art books that delve deeper into utilizing theme in composition as you suggest in these Frazetta works? Doing some research, thanks.
whay you call abstract shapes in tattoos we call it silhouette.. just shapes of single color without too much definition or detail.... because that sorounds the main point of view ... but frazetta makes it look like its actually detailed

I found this video by happenstance when I searched "how to paint like frank Frazetta", and I LOVE the video so far. I am only an hour into it and I feel like this video is going to make me better just because I watched it. Artistic epiphanies are getting hard to find for me and you are dropping them like candy here! I love it. Its too much to digest and appreciate in one sitting though lol. It is a lot of information.
there is certainly some undestanding of shapes, values etc. but i think you are too much overanalyzing and reading someting into paintings. i paint myself and i can go over my paintings and find all the stuff you talk about in them. you can find all kinds of shapes in literally every painting if you willingly search for them. it´s like seeing things in clouds. just try it, pick some random art and then search for connecting shadows and all that stuff. i personally don´t really think of them intentionally while painting. those things naturally happen if you have a feeling and sense for it. which most artists do have. if i would think of all this everytime before i start painting id get totally blocked creatively and it would take all the fun out of painting. don´t limit yourself.

Your right I did make a video in which I featured Syd Mead a long time ago when I was making videos for the ImagineFX magazine. About the abs its the part at the bottom that can didive as other abs and divide even veryicaly visualy of course, the muscle doesnt really divide it self. I guess it is somethingnlike this because there is people with 8 pack and even 10 pack
That Famous Artist maquette is not ideal for extreme action poses. It looks too much like a GI Joe doll. Comic artists like Jim Lee and David Finch use Bridgman's conception to twist and bend the torso in exciting ways. If Frazetta did that, I think it's probably the right way as his action figures were peerless.
Great analysis and explanation on all levels! Congratulations!! I would only like to intervene at the time point 2:18:27 where you refer to the anatomical distortion of the form created by Frazetta. He really knows anatomy to a superlative degree and he really distorts to serve a purpose, but... My objection is limited to the fact of purpose, which is not addressed in your analysis.. If we pay attention, the distortion serves to represent a human skull which is formed by the muscles of the man... The eye sockets are formed in the chest of the man and the dentition of the skull is formed in the abdominal area. It's a detail, but I thought it necessary to comment on it since even an untrained eye with no experience in the genre might not be able to perceive it, as well as for a more basic reason! So that the purpose of the distortion is precisely understood! Thank you and keep on the good work!

Truly amazing video, utterly educational!! I have a question regarding gesture drawings. My interpretation about what you said about doing them after you are skilled enough with construction and anatomy, is that you are talking about doing them when drawing from imagination. Is that right? I wouldn't see a problem starting with gesture drawings while seeing a figure (since you don't really have to have much anatomy or construction understanding, is just in front of you).

i love your videos my god! I would like to make a suggestion for the next content. you could list some interesting books for a solid background in the basics of understanding shapes/compositions and much more; I am not American and the content for me is much more difficult to find in these aspects of information, I would be very grateful if this happened because it would help people who do not have this type of content in their midst.
For the painting at the 35 minute mark, you showed the series of the three repeating arcs. I think that pattern of three is again repeated in an angular or triangular shape. Look at the rock outcropping, the shape of his legs and the sword and the light glinting off it and you will see what I mean.
Great video! Haven’t got all the way yet but I will be watching the whole thing when I have a chance. Have another request for you. A common problem artists face is the size of objects in relation to another object. I mean less in the terms of perspective more in the terms of figuring out sizes from the start of the composition. Let’s say like a human to a doorway/door, or how tall one should make a house, how tall the human should be in relation to a house. Or in the case of science fiction how large a ship should be in relation to the human inside of it, how to place a human inside of a ship according to the size. Would love to see your take on this. This is covered well in the famous artist books, but I would love to hear your take and spin on things.

Hi NotSoup, You can find the Famous Artists School Textbooks on ebay. Not much more to be said about shape branching other then what I already showed in the video. Some artists may or may not use it depending on what there style is. Or they might not even know about it. Shape branching can give definition to certain parts of the image like the muscles and interlock shapes forming a stronger union of shapes resulting in greater unity. Thanks for watching the video!

The abstract shapes is what I like most of all. You can't really make out what's going on, the detail is obscured or completely lost in the shadows.
