I wish I could have seen the future, because I would have saved this to prove what I'm writing is the truth, because I KNOW people are not going to believe this.
A black city council member in Inglewood would send out a monthly newsletter notifying his constituents of what's happening in the city, what plans are being discussed, how the state of the city is going, what's happening in the area, any special events, and things of that nature.
What he said in this one would get him lynched by his own people today.
He said he was happy to report that property values were rising in the area after years of decline, and the crime rate is going down, *because whites were moving back into Inglewood.*
Imagine his career in politics today.
I swear that was exactly what this black city council member wrote in his newsletter.
Like I said, if I could have foreseen today I would have laminated that newsletter, insured it, and locked it in a safety deposit box until now.

yes I remember as kids being chased back over the bridge on our bikes (60's-70's). My granddad walked into a bar to use the phone and he said they followed him outside like they were about to jump him....I remember my grandma yelling at him because he could have been hurt.

I grew up in Roseland and was educated by Thornton Township. I saw cities like Riverdale, Dolton, and Cal City go from majority white to dominated by Blks overnight. It was a lot of single mothers moving from Chicago to those neighboring suburbs. Majority of the prominent Blks stayed in Harvey, Robbins, Phoenix, and Dixmoore.

I was an HR Director in a small city. In my city, the city manager ran the city business and the mayor was basically a figure head with one council vote. The City Manager was typically recruited by a professional headhunter and hired by a council vote. I also grew up in a small city. I personally would not trust uneducated voters selecting a mayor with the power of a professionally hired and accomplished City Manager. It makes no sense to have that form of government in such a small city. Its a process to change it but a situation like Tiffany can continue to happen in the future if elections continue to be popularity contests.

ODJ, you keep featuring my mayor (b/c I live in Dolton) & I’m here for it! You keep me informed about my little village. She’s right about it being white. I attended Thornridge High School in Dolton, IL in the early 1980s. My graduation class was 94% white. Before I graduated, every 3rd house had a “For Sale” sales. ABOUT 10-15 years later, Dolton went from majority white to mostly Black.

One key difference between white flight and gentrification. When Black people move in an area, White people VOLUNTARILY move out. When White people move into a predominately Black area, Black people are FIRCED TO MOCE OUT ( drastic increases in their rent or property taxes, closures of Black owned businesses, etc).

My father's family was the last white family on the block in Chicago at 76th and Bishop. My father was jumped by black kids and they put a screwdriver to his neck. My grandfather who worked for the city as an electrician decided then to move the family. Where my grandmother lived was getting worse and they had her move.
