  • In this video, Tommy and I tackle insulating our attic with Greenfiber blown-in insulation. We went into this very naive thinking it couldn't be THAT hard. Boy were we wrong.

    Update- This video cracks me up. That was such a miserable day. Keep in mind that this was in Texas and it was violently hot that day. Do not try this during a Texas summer. Probably best done in cooler weather. We are happy with the product. Our timing was just way off.

    This is an excellent video for anyone thinking about doing such a job. Not many UA-cam videos show the reality of how difficult some jobs can be. You two deserve a lot of credit for taking on such a big job and showing what went wrong and what went right.

    I was watching different videos on blow-in insulation and came across your video. I was busting a gut when the efficient wife suggested to cut the bag to allow material to easily enter into the hopper and Mr. Hmmm no no shot down that great idea. Definitely give credit to the wife for being a team player and helping out. There is no way on gods green earth my wife will work the hopper if we decide to go this route. Thank you for sharing this video, it was very informative.

    Great video and I'm learning that this deal of a "free" machine isn't such a great deal because often there IS NO machine, or it's broken--probably gets a lot of used and abuse, and little to no maintenance.
    For anyone else considering this job, get a set of walkie-talkies so you can tell your machine operator STOP!!! Also, know there are many people paying a lot of money to have this stuff SUCKED OUT so that can air seal the attic to stop airflow through ceiling into/or of the attic. So do that BEFORE you put the insulation in.

    Neither Home Depot had the machine. Lowes had a machine but not the one shown in the Greenfiber videos. That probably would have helped. Both of us needed respirators as well. This is a serious job and needs serious protection.

    I was worried about doing it myself after seeing this videos title but after watching it, i have full faith that these were easily avoidable mistakes. Insulate in the fall, spring, or winter....no the middle of the summer. Cut the insulation into pieces before puting in the machine. Wear appropriate gear before attempting this. Youll have an easy time, get a little dirty, and save tons of money doing it.

    • @TexasHomesteaders
      @TexasHomesteaders  7 місяців тому +1

      You left out... rent the correct machine/hopper for the material you are using. They gave us the wrong one. I'm honestly not sure you can "cut" the insulation. Once the bag is cut it starts to fly everywhere since it's no longer compressed.

  • @heyzeuss

    I'm currently working on my attic. I had vermiculite in there. For the safety of my family and their long term health I got it removed. Since then, I have been going up there weekly air sealing, insulating pipes, adding baffles and metal mesh to gable vents to keep out squirrels. Next I have to build up hatch and blow in the cellulose. Got 60 bags stored in my garage right now and have machine reserved for later this week.
    It's honestly so much work I want to puke. Some days after getting down from there i do puke. But I know in the end it'll be worth it cause I actually care about the project and what it adds to the house.

    Sad thing is, I had the same thing happen to me.. they didn't have the fiber glass that we wanted and we had to go with the cellulose. The ac company I was working for didn't know what they were doing imo since we never did blown in insulation. Or any insulation for that matter.. it's a rough job and not for the faint of heart.
    Ended up going to home Depot and their cellulose machine was broken.. we didn't notice it wasn't the same style machine, but it was that same exact blue machine with the trash can.. same exact outcome! I'll never forget that day.. I tried to wear a mask as the sweat made it entirely impossible to breathe through the mask.. I was wearing my glasses and those got covered in insulation.. it really concerned me lol.. that the loader (me) was dirtier than the person in the attic..
    Funniest part is we thought it was a fiberglass based insulation but it's just newspaper.. soooyeah that was good to know. The machine broke like 3 times during the job with the same problems, hose falling off.. we ended up duct taping the crap out of that machine.. I hated that job.
    I have to insulate the floors in my mobile home so I'm just going to drop in some of that cellulose instead of using the mschine. Just doing it by hand. I'm sure I'll have a great memory of that day but I'm pretty sure by hand, and alone.. it will probably be easier lol. God bless you guys for uploading this! Can't believe a professional ac company had the same crap happen to them. We still got it done but if you ever get a chance check out the actual machine. It's got no top and is a basic green square. I wonder how much easier it is with that one haha..

    • @TexasHomesteaders
      @TexasHomesteaders  Рік тому +1

      Yes. In hindsight, our house is so small (1000sf) that we would have been better off just dumping the bags of cellulose out by hand and spreading it with a rake. That machine just makes a big mess.

    I love at the end how she interjects "pay someone else" :D i'm about to do this myself, wanted to see what i'm getting into, thanks all. One thing i'm trying to find is there is actually an option to wet the cellulose so it doesn't get super dusty everywhere. The internet calls this "stabilized" cellulose. I can't find the attachment / setup for a rental.

    • @TexasHomesteaders

    basically, you spent more time and money on gas and materials. Chances are most likely vents and soffits have been covered. Also doing the Airsealing is the better option. Insulation is only half the battle.

    • @TexasHomesteaders
      @TexasHomesteaders  5 місяців тому

      No vents were covered. Only vents in this old house were 2 gable vents on opposite ends of the house. Utility bill is lower so we are satisfied.

    • @TexasHomesteaders
      @TexasHomesteaders  5 місяців тому

      I should also add that we wanted to spray foam the attic and had some people out to give us a quote but they emphatically said it could not be done in this house. They could do one side but would not be able to do the addition (master bedroom) or over the living room and kitchen unless we removed the ceilings and created a new attic access in the master which we are not going to do. Future owners are welcome to do so if they choose. This is a "good enough" and "better than it was" scenario.

  • @damianodonovan2121
    @damianodonovan2121 3 місяці тому +1

    Cellulose is the best and greenest insulation by far, but you should have got a professional to do it. Open blow in the attic is easy, but cavities can be really difficult. PPE is essential in enclosed spaces, there should also be a remote control so you can turn the machine off at the pointy end. In spite of all that, well done.

    • @TexasHomesteaders
      @TexasHomesteaders  3 місяці тому

      We feel pretty confident that we got every area in this little house. It was less than 800sf because there was no access to the addition (total sf is 1024). There was no remote. Would have been nice. IF I did it again, it wouldn't be in the summer but this is one thing I'd rather not have to repeat. PPE would have been nice.

    You poor, good hearted, ignorant folks! Improper masks and googles, no hearing protection, but you got the job done despite probable damage to your lungs, ear drums, and eyes! At the very least, both of you should have worn half face respirators and tight fitting goggles. PREFERABLY, a FULL FACE RESPIRATOR would have been the smart way to go for wonderful protection for your eyes and lungs. Hearing protection should have been over-the-ear type hard shell muffs, NOT EAR PLUGS. Lowes and Home Depot sells these items also at very reasonable prices. I thank you for making the video, but it should be a guide on HOW NOT TO DO blown in insulation.

      Again for the slow ones that feel it's necessary to call us names without knowing the full story. We had a pandemic in America. You may have heard about it. The things you mentioned were NOT available in the stores and the job still needed to get done before we could move forward with other things. If we did this for a living every day, we might worry about it. We don't. We survived the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s with no ear protection while doing much worse and our hearing is just fine. Our Harley is louder than this thing was and we don't wear earplugs on the Harley. You'll be shocked to know we also don't wear a helmet on the Harley and there is a very valid reason for that one. For those that are concerned they may not make it to be a diaper wearing 90 year old, please wear protection. We aren't concerned at our ripe old ages. This video was to show that it isn't as easy as people think, proper gear or not. Mission accomplished.
