VW designers have been doing their thing the last few years. Their sedans are getting more and more attractive. This car is a great every day commuter.
SUV makes more sense when you have kids with car seats on. For single or small family, compact sedan is all you need and mid size sedan cannot match the practicality of SUV no matter what.
@@ahsanmalik1013 I made the decision to get a sedan for my first car. I grew up with SUVs. I got a 2013 Camry. It handles completely different than anything we have had in a long time. I’m late to the game here, but I’ll chime in and say that, even if it became dated, the Passat was still one of the great value propositions for a mid-sized sedan right up until its end with its understated-yet-elegant styling and massive interior volume. I had a 2013 Passat SE with a manual transmission. Loved it and later regretted parting with it. The old 2.5 liter five-cylinder engine was underpowered, but the manual helped compensate for that, and it was the smoothest manual I’ve ever driven. I’d take a 2020 Passat over a new SUV any day.
These are great sedans. I had a 2016 lease, enjoyed it; very reliable and it got great gas mileage. Turned it in for a Jetta, only because the Jetta lease was a lot less per month! LOL! ( the wife drives the Jetta but I still have my Alfa Romeo)

But as always, a "perfect fit" for some. (Like me!) Thanks for a very fair assessment of the plusses and minuses.
I own a 2021. It’s been a good car. Only thing I hate about it is the noisy engine. Low rpm’s it sounds like a diesel. Once under way it gets quiet. Great road trip car. Roomy and comfortable
I bought a 2020 Passat SE after watching this video. Had been looking at several cars but wife and I liked the Passat and price it was at here in NOLA. Wanted the R-Line but dealer wasn’t trying to work on it. Only the SEL Jetta and we wanted more backseat room for our giant 3 year old 😂. Went across the lake and got the SE from another dealer willing to work a deal on it.
I appreciate how often you post. Its awesome!!!! When do you and Lori sleep?!?! This Passat looks so dated to me. Its super bland, the small rims, small screen, old technology, no panoramic sunroof, and $32,000?!?!? Its far to many better options for the price!!! You can get a 2018 Passat same trim, looks identical for under $20k!!!
Great review, I like the Atkinson Cycle 2.0 liter engine in this Passat. Looking forward to a review of the Arteron in bright mustard yellow. In Houston they’re selling 2020 Passats with at least $5,000 of MSRP, that’s good value for money. Hostess Twinkies, not a sponsor.
Give it a boost in horsepower, the current Jetta GLI's screens & steering wheel, bring back the interior design style of the CC and keep all that nice wood and flat dash and you've got yourself a killer VW
Happy thanksgiving to you from Canada. By the way Québec is a good place to get a Passat. I got à 2015 highline with 25400 Km on top shape for $15000. Can. and I love it.
I think I preferred the Arteon better because it's bigger than the Passat and it's on the MQB platform. What I like on the Passat: Bigger Backseat What I don't like on the Passat: Small Infotainment Display Traditional Gauges No 360 Degree Camera Old school handbrake What I like on the Arteon: Larger Infotainment System Digital Cockpit Display 360 Degree Camera Electronic Parking Brake
This refresh makes the Passat look like a larger version of the redesigned Jetta. Also, all those cameras and driver assistance packages we love? Makes a $150.00 4-wheel alignment on a '19 Jetta cost $600.00! So..maybe there is such a thing as TOO much tech.
Sad that VW is cancelling the Passat for you guys I like the car but the Passat from Europe looks even better I wish you guys had it too you would really like it anyways nice video again 👌👍
I only miss 3 things from my Passat: the lit-up glove compartment, Climatronic, and the dual-lighting for rear passengers (little things). You can definitely see several corner-cuttings where VW cut back in quality. The transmission is clumsy at lower speeds, the ride is not very stable at higher speeds - compared to other makers - and the seats are horrible for the back. VW really gave up on catching up with the competition.
Joe it may be a commuter car and not fast by any means. But slow cars are fun cause you can go on throttle with them everywhere and nobody would think your going fast. And these smaller engines are quiet so you cant wake up anyone.
I feel like they should put the new steering wheel, the R Line package should be available on the SEL with the bigger 19” wheels, add AWD on SEL and at least the newer 8 inch infotainment inside for 2021 if they really wanna sell this thing because I had the 2012 and loved it with the VR6 & DSG and drove this one liked it but didn’t love it. The outside styling is the best of that gen. tho
Hey Joe you've posted videos of the Jetta recently and now the Passat. Is there a chance we will see a Golf GTI review soon? Its the perfect all around daily driver hot hatch in my opinion.
I test drove a 2017 VW Passat R-line during car shopping and was fairly unimpressed. The transmission seemed a bit off, though it could have been a rental car (I never bothered to look at the carfax to see). Too bad they're gonna be gone soon but I doubt too many people will miss them that much.
Yes it is. 6 speed trans. I dislike those 10 speed trans seem to be searching for a gear. Dancing the samba. Under the hood. No stop start feature. On the 2020. That is a ridiculous idea. There are better ways to save gas. Keep your tires inflated. It’s a retro car. But has been updated exterior. That’s fine with me. Love it a very elegant car. A nice cruiser car for me I have owned 9 vw cars
I miss my 2013 TDI SEL Premium so much. I miss it more and more each day. I now have the 2020 Passat SE, and I would do anything to get my old car back. I’m disappointed with Volkswagen really.. RIP TDI you were the G.O.A.T these new cars and electric cars are TRASH. Ya heard me?
Volkswagen Passat lost it way. Wow just think if Volkswagen would have placed Jetta's GLI powerplant or at least a detuned version. The original Passat had this amazing German feel to now handling like Buick on four wheels.
VW makes some nice looking cars. Unfortunately Consumer Reports rates most VW bottom of the pack in reliability. The model that scores high is the VW Golf. Hopefully this will improve for other models in the future.
The sound of the car is what I would kind of Zonk because of how quiet it is. I wish if it was a little bit louder like a Toyota RAV4 2017, so that way you can know how loud the car is being right now while driving.
Nice car - perfect for the majority of Americans who want a nice comfortable car and adequate power for daily use. Power hungry drivers (including your's truly) are in a very small minority.
My best friend has the 2018, and just visually i actually prefer that. Don't like that they got rid of the clock inside and i also don't like that volvo style P A S S A T either, looks cleaner without any badging imo. That one has the electronic e brake tho 🤔
VW nailed a German Toyota Camry, solid basics but boring and outdated. /looks the same minus some dash trim as my '14 Jetta... Roomy, comfy, great audio, good mpg, but it's boring. For $32K i can get a 1 yr old Volvo S-60...great stuff, Joe!
First we eat the bird, then we watch Raiti's Rides!!! The Passat is surely a looker. Too bad people started buying more SUV'S than sedans. Thanks for bringing us this review Joe. With ya Joe, needs more HP and the screen is undersized too.....also, AWD would be nice now that some competitors are offering it on their mid-size sedans, about half the country would like to have AWD is my guess.
In Europe, we get a different Passat. The body is different. In China, they call the European Passat the Magotan, and China calls the American Passat the Passat. Both the American and European Passats are sold in China, but the European Passat is under a different name.
I would have thought VW would have dropped the Jetta before the Passat as the US mid sized sedan market still has lot a life left in it. I guess they dropped the Passat since it's a much older platform. Still don't know why they don't bring the European Passat to the US. Yes it would be more expensive but a decently loaded Camry or Accord isn't exactly cheap.
The Jetta is by far their best selling non-suv in the US so they won’t drop it. Once they stop building the US Passat they should bring over the Euro Passat and drop the Arteon which I think I read only sold 2500 units in the US.

I love me the Passat it even has that smart park feature and standard driving assistance so I’ll most definitely look into buying one
It’s definitely a nice looking car.
I am so glad that you like this one.
@@RaitisRides You know it.
I own a 2021. It’s been a good car. Only thing I hate about it is the noisy engine. Low rpm’s it sounds like a diesel. Once under way it gets quiet. Great road trip car. Roomy and comfortable
If you don’t mind, can you please do a review on VW Passat 2015 TDI
I will try to track one down for you!
Thanks my friend! That really means a lot!
Great review Joe.
Happy Thanksgiving to you & your family!
Thanks my friend! Same to you and yours!
Joe...good job trying to hype up the styling of this car and make it seem less dull lol. This and the Jetta look under styled in and out.
Thanks brother for saying that!
Thanks James! I appreciate you sharing that info.
Give it a boost in horsepower, the current Jetta GLI's screens & steering wheel, bring back the interior design style of the CC and keep all that nice wood and flat dash and you've got yourself a killer VW
That generation of Passat (2012+) is the absolute most boring Passat in history. The previous generations were something special.
Thanks for sharing that great input Chris!
This maybe my sedan long live sedans
I totally agree with you!
SUV variants are making sedans obsolete unfortunately
Happy thanksgiving Joe!
Thank you for saying that!
What I like on the Passat:
Bigger Backseat
What I don't like on the Passat:
Small Infotainment Display
Traditional Gauges
No 360 Degree Camera
Old school handbrake
What I like on the Arteon:
Larger Infotainment System
Digital Cockpit Display
360 Degree Camera
Electronic Parking Brake
I'm actually considering one to replace my 2014 Passat. Can't find anything this size for this price that drives as smoothly and looks as good.
Wow a grill on a modern car that isn't huge? Nice! Also happy Thanksgiving
I know right! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
Great review!!
You are the man!
This refresh makes the Passat look like a larger version of the redesigned Jetta. Also, all those cameras and driver assistance packages we love? Makes a $150.00 4-wheel alignment on a '19 Jetta cost $600.00! So..maybe there is such a thing as TOO much tech.
Very good points!
@@RaitisRides Thanks Joe! Yeah--that was an EYE opener!
This is a grownup grownup car, its a simple point A to B machine and some might just appreciate that, without all those techs that in your face.
Sad that VW is cancelling the Passat for you guys I like the car but the Passat from Europe looks even better I wish you guys had it too you would really like it anyways nice video again 👌👍
Thanks George for letting me share it with you and for your great support!
Are they going to discontinue the Passat?? It was always a good driving vehicle
Unfortunately they are.
@@RaitisRides do you know why? we have loved ours
The styling is sharp but this is de-contented inside and out compared to the euro version. They half assed it and it shows.
That is very true!
Question: what is y’all’s 3 favorite cars in the world?
Hard question I guess I’ll pick
Bmw M5
Mercedes s class AMG
Audi RS7
And bonus car Porsche 911
RR PHANTOM
FORD MUSTANG GT500
CADILLAC ESCALID OR LINCOLN NAVIGATOR
Ferrari F40
original Lamborghini Aventador
McLaren 720s
Ferrari 488 spider with a full novitec exhaust
Joe it may be a commuter car and not fast by any means. But slow cars are fun cause you can go on throttle with them everywhere and nobody would think your going fast. And these smaller engines are quiet so you cant wake up anyone.
This is very true Michael!
The outside styling is the best of that gen. tho
Very good points!
This guy is funny, I love his videos
Can you do a drive with the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT because I am a big fan
I will try to track one down for you!
Hey Joe you've posted videos of the Jetta recently and now the Passat. Is there a chance we will see a Golf GTI review soon? Its the perfect all around daily driver hot hatch in my opinion.
You better believe it!
@@RaitisRides That's what I would like to see also.
Happy Thanksgiving Joe!
Thank you so much Raymond!
This is probably one of the best automotive UA-cam channel.
@Doug demuro you might wanna catch up lol...
Thanks Leyon for saying that! You are so awesome!
I'm disappointed 😭😭
Buy something else
I feel your pain!
LOL
I test drove a 2017 VW Passat R-line during car shopping and was fairly unimpressed. The transmission seemed a bit off, though it could have been a rental car (I never bothered to look at the carfax to see). Too bad they're gonna be gone soon but I doubt too many people will miss them that much.
Thanks for sharing that great input from your experience!
Thanks for sharing that great input!
If this is a mid size sedan, then what’s the full size sedan would look like ?
Happy Turkey Day Zonkman!
Thank you Luis!
You and Lori should do a Thanksgiving video and discuss whaf you guys are thankfull for.
@@RaitisRides when you guys do your thanksgiving video, would you guys talk about your stuff?
How was Turkey Day?
I miss my 2013 TDI SEL Premium so much. I miss it more and more each day. I now have the 2020 Passat SE, and I would do anything to get my old car back. I’m disappointed with Volkswagen really.. RIP TDI you were the G.O.A.T these new cars and electric cars are TRASH. Ya heard me?
Volkswagen Passat lost it way. Wow just think if Volkswagen would have placed Jetta's GLI powerplant or at least a detuned version. The original Passat had this amazing German feel to now handling like Buick on four wheels.
I totally agree with you!
Thanks for sharing your creative comments!
i like the flat bottom steering wheel
#racecar
Nice car - perfect for the majority of Americans who want a nice comfortable car and adequate power for daily use. Power hungry drivers (including your's truly) are in a very small minority.
Good way to call it!
so close to 400k
You are so very right Stephen. Thanks for having my back!
My best friend has the 2018, and just visually i actually prefer that. Don't like that they got rid of the clock inside and i also don't like that volvo style P A S S A T either, looks cleaner without any badging imo.
That one has the electronic e brake tho 🤔
Very good points!
I like VWs in general, but I'll take a pass at this model.
I think that is why they are killing it off. Many people are taking a hard pass on it!
That’s the old badge lol...happy thanksgiving!!!
Yea VW hasn’t put the new badge on everything yet
Yep!
This is true!
First we eat the bird, then we watch Raiti's Rides!!! The Passat is surely a looker. Too bad people started buying more SUV'S than sedans. Thanks for bringing us this review Joe. Happy Thanksgiving to you, Lori, Crown Vic and your entire dealership network who facilitate these epic videos!!! I'm calling it right now too....400k subs before midnight!!@ Congratulations!!! #RaitisRides #OnThrottle #ToTheDoorPanel #TwinkiesForDays #OnThrottleAgain #LoriGotAngles #CameraQueen #Zonkmeister #CrownVic #OnThrottleAllOverThePlace #IfYoureReadyImReady #VW #Passat
Thanks for letting me share it with you Mario. No 400k yet but we are so close.
@@RaitisRides No problem bro. I checked lastnight and this morning too lol so close I can taste it!!!
With ya Joe, needs more HP and the screen is undersized too.....also, AWD would be nice now that some competitors are offering it on their mid-size sedans, about half the country would like to have AWD is my guess.
Did Volkswagen drop Beats audio and go back to Fender audio?
Yes they did.
@@RaitisRides smart move.
You didn’t mention that it’s going to be discontinued and the value you could buy one at considering it’s on an old platform.
Wait are they seriously being discontinued? O.O
Yea for US market
@@yes8032 man that sucks. I’ve got a 2014 Jetta. Love that thing. Sad to see the Passat go.
@@JCDenton95 true man I feel bad for you in Europe these Passat sell very good but they look different here
Yes 💯
In Europe, we get a different Passat. The body is different. In China, they call the European Passat the Magotan, and China calls the American Passat the Passat.
Both the American and European Passats are sold in China, but the European Passat is under a different name.
I would have thought VW would have dropped the Jetta before the Passat as the US mid sized sedan market still has lot a life left in it. I guess they dropped the Passat since it's a much older platform. Still don't know why they don't bring the European Passat to the US. Yes it would be more expensive but a decently loaded Camry or Accord isn't exactly cheap.
I know right!
The Jetta is by far their best selling non-suv in the US so they won’t drop it. Once they stop building the US Passat they should bring over the Euro Passat and drop the Arteon which I think I read only sold 2500 units in the US.
