Even as a guitar player of 30 years I have got the same kind of criticism... people saying "all he can do is lead riffs and chops. Probably can't even play rythm"...
The thing is I have paid my dues, and started from the ground up (rythm) in bands for many years, and have worked very hard to get to the level I'm at now..!
People just like to try and hurt other people...
I've toured the country, and done allot of session work that people pay allot of money for!!!

Yeah bro I agree with you. People think that you're doing stuff for them but you're actually just showing them how you'd play the song, it's that simple. People are weird and love to criticize. Just keep doing you bro. And yes there are drummers out there who can play without doing much chops and so on...recently I started doing a bit more chops at Church. I used to use grooves and a few pockets you know; but then I asked one of the worship leaders how does she find my playing, and she said it's great but I should fill up the songs more...and that's what I did. My mom is also a worship leader and so told me is this the only way I could play that song, and I said no I don't know if the other musicians would be ready to flow with me, and they were like..dude we've been waiting..and I was like okay. But I used to play straight a lot because I didn't want the elders in the Church to feel a certain way and say that I'm playing like the world and all those kind of things, and that's where my mom stopped me and she said,"you're not playing for them, you're playing for the Glory of God" . I was playing for both but then I was like...really...I can't play for both...so yh. I hope my story inspires some people, be blessed people of God. 🙂

True Josh very very true as a Drummer myself I can relate to that. As a Drummer I know when there are certain songs that you have to keep in the pocket & some when you need to add chops I feel like it's the most important thing for any drummer to know & for people who say what they said please just like you I been playing for years & I have experience so I know when I need to add chops or keep in time JOSH YOU PLAY HOW YOU PLAY BROTHER IT'S YOUR CHANNEL 💯

It seems like a lot of drummers think because you add your flavor to a drum cover, you taking away from the music but if music is already recorded a certain why redo it might as well go watch the drummer who recorded the song. I like to add tricks while I’m playing drums because it fun to me and plus everyone can’t do tricks and stay on beat while doing it. I understand how you feel bro, keep up the awesome drumming. 👍🏾💪🏾
