The only info I retained from the video, even though it was very interesting, was the first bit, tapping on it, I'm into all kInds of things, I have rugs, figurines, crystals, cards, very random and unless you specialise in one thing... valuable info can fly over. My husband thrifted a silverware set for regular use, not noticing it had a mark on the back. I noticed it was tarnished, so I wondered if it is real silver or silver plated. Each piece has a 1847 Rogers Bros. mark on the back. After googling a bit, I have found mixed responses. Some say that pieces made before 1850 were not marked with the .925 or sterling. Others say that Roger Bros. made these in 1860 and stamped them as 1847 Rogers Bros. and they are likely silver plated. May I have your thoughts please?
Well I didn’t find a piece as that but I did find a tea set that has beautiful tone to it as silver can have. Also not magnetic as well. But was hoping suggestions here to test further
Silvo is my go to. Either the wadding or the liquid. If something is really tarnished I use one of those ‘bath’ cleaners first, great to get the think off and into all the nooks and crannies, but it never brings the lustre up. Use Silvo after. Let it dry and then buff off with an old towel. One to take the thick off and another to Polish. Lasts for months
@@MrStevenMoore I haven't tried Silvo, but I've been using Herman's, a product made in Rhode Island. Totally odorless and non-toxic. It comes in a jar and looks like a face cream. Works well with absolutely no scratching of the silver. My wife has allergies and sensitivities, which is why I bought the Herman's over other brands. We have an online reselling business on the side, so we needed something to clean the silver plate we buy for resale.

I think one of them is eickhorn and one is primans stamped. Do you have a source of finding producers. Do you have any tips for me to restore or keep it this way. I am new to this but i found out these types of plating dates back to the early 1900 to even before that era. Thanks in advance for your answer

I found a dish at a thrift store. Hallmarked 940 rogers canada 1881. Magnet wont stick to it. Got the silver polish cloth to it. Got black while polishing it up. What marks should i look for to figure out if it is plated.

I have these EPNS A1 90 stamped knife type things, tried that tapping them against one another but they all ring pretty high pitch even when i tap something like stainless steel. Says on the handle made in sheffield England. Are these just plated? I don't want to run a buffing compound over them and possibly damage it if they're just plated

Why don’t any of these videos start with the fact that silver for the last few hundred years has to be MARKED. Silver-plating is often marked as well. Get a lupe. If it has a mark buy it. If it does not and cannot do an acid test on it, don’t buy it. Everybody in the industry works this way.😂
I and I think the vast majority of people know about hallmarks. I’m sure you also know that hallmarks are often rubbed or hard to find. There’s always a place for knowledge

Hello, I found a silver tray at a sale and it is stamped Germany on the back and has a crest in the center of the tray. It is huge and quite heavy. I have done the magnet test and the ice cube test. Both indicate it is silver. I haven't found any other markings but I don't have a magnifies glass. Any thoughts. Thanks for your help.

Rogers Bro’s made silver plate. The 1847 mark was only used after 1862

Rogers made silver plate. Most Canadian silver is marked ‘Sterling’

It may be possible to recognise the hallmarks from the shape, but it depends of how rubbed they are.
