this video wasn't bad, but it was super misleading with the title. I was expecting something akin to game theory in which you tell us there was a hidden meaning in the game, or a secret many lets players overlook. really all you did was explain the basic plot make jokes and tell us many games it borrowed great ideas from. it wasn't bad, I'm sure someone who never played the game or watched a lets play would find it informative, but to someone whos seen it beginning to end, you say anything that they would already know.
+wildwesleywest I agree, I was quite disappointed with the lack of analysis of the game. Heck, I feel like *I* could write a better Shovel Knight hypothesis video.
"We're a quarter of the way through the Order of No Quarter. Only three quarters of the Order of No Quarter left. Ugh, that was a mouthful - OF QUARTERS!!! Oh god I can't believe I have to say this shit!" "That is probably the stupidest thing we've ever written. THIS'LL REALLY FUCK WITH HIM!!!" Best part of the video.
Truly one of the best games I've ever played. I'm not even saying this because of nostalgia, because I wasn't even around in the 90's! This game is awesome, and so are you, Treecicle.
Il french, since very young, I've always heard "Pas de quartier", or "Pas de quartier, pas de pitié!" in tv shows, cartoons etc... Which literally means "No quarter", and "No quarter, no mercy!" So it always felt like common knowledge to me
I say this about Shovel Knight all the time, but I feel it best describes it. Shovel Knight is like that perfect nostalgic memory of old school games, only instead of disappointing you it lives up to the memory. Simply an awesome game that outdose its more expensive competition by going back to a simpler time.
+Berlin Greek The actual story he told was the real-world story. Of the beginning of a gaming renaissance. Somehow I doubt you watched the whole thing.....
+GamerGenérico I feel like you as well didn't watch the whole video... And I'm usually harsh as hell when it comes to comedy critique but a lot of the jokes used were actually quite charming.
+ADAMNATOR You sure do like to jump to conclusions... However, if they didn't watch the whole thing, then lucky them... The end sucked compared to rest of the video... And the rest of the video was only average
I agree. This guy keeps appearing in my recommendations so I give it a shot, thinking "maybe there's /actually/ hidden story I dont know about" but its always just an explanation of regular gameplay. I personally dont enjoy their content, but others do, so good for them, I guess?
+Madison Hogan Why does he need to make a better video to point the fact that the title doesn't correlate with the content? It's my first time watching anything from this channel, I clicked because it said "The story you never knew", and there was nothing I didn't know here. So yeah.
I really thought there was some secret I never knew, but the video just recapped everything I already knew in the game. It was a good appreciation video. Shovel Knight is a breath of fresh 8 bit air.
I wanted to say you should do an update on this because the two expansions really add to the story, but seeing as this was already kind of a sub par "the story you never knew" as shovel knight's story isn't convoluted and is a little simple, it probably wouldn't be the best idea. Still though! If you put something out after the King Knight DLC comes out, I'd love to watch it :)
Inverted Controls: The Story You Never Knew. If you can pull that off, I'll praise you as one of teh UA-cam Gods. ^_^ Another great video by the way~! *Holds out jar of cookies*
The biggest heartbreak was when my sister deleted Shovel Knight from our PlayStation to make room for Overwatch 2 Shovel Knight is easily one of the best 2-D platformers I’ve ever played
Just some suggestions, MegaMan Prophet/Laurence Barnes (Crysis) Talion (Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor) Kirby Soap McTavish (COD Modern Warfare 1-3) Cortana (Halo) Aiden Pearce (Watch Dogs) Michael De Santa, Trevor Philipps, or Franklin Clinton, either one (Grand Theft Auto V) Commander Shepard (Mass Effect) Starkiller (Star Wars The Force Unleashed) The Guardians (Destiny) Connor and Edward Kenway (Assassin's Creed) Marcus Michael Fenix (Gears Of War)
Wild Freeze I remember when the update was new. He did become my new favorite character and I do believe that the game needs to add polar knight campaign because he is very mysterious
6:10 I've played through the game at least five times. I've beaten it twice on PC, twice on the 3DS, and once on the Wii U. I've beaten the Plague Knight DLC twice. I've completed the challenge mode on the three above mentioned versions. To this day, I never knew that entrance was there. GG me, GG.
My Friends No, although if you have the amiibo then you don't really need exclusive bosses. Especially for the Wii U, where the amiibo gives multiplayer (my one playthrough on the Wii U was a multiplayer playthrough with the new items and stuff and I must say, trying to play through the levels with someone constantly trying to screw you over at every turn is something all right).
This was a really sick video! Just finished Plague of Shadows, so I was on a Shovel Knight video splurge and came across this. Loved the editing style, the over-the-top voice overs, and the hilariously lame jokes, that actually were pretty damn clever. I was pleasantly surprised by this video, good job! And personally, I fucking hope this was the beginning of a gaming renaissance. I don't hope that "insane graphics, complicated gameplay" games go away, but it'd be amazing to have a return to simplicity.
this is what games are about! no huge story on the surface, play not tell just as in television as the saying goes "show dont tell" the same applies to our great interactive medium that is so different from the others. books you tell, videos you show, and games you play
I was really disappointed that you left out the dream sequences, they added so much more to the plot of the game. In the beginning you see shovel knight crippled and depressed over Shield Knight being lost within the tower of fate. And on this journey during the dream sequences, you see how much she really means to shovel knight. Every dream that he has, he pushes away these various enemies, his fears, his obstacles to try and catch her, to reunite with his lost lover. It's these sequences that make shovel knight's quest seem so much more noble, it's these sequences that make Sheild knight's "You caught me..." hit you right in the feels. If you look at a game like Mario, you know that he's off to save the princess, but they never mention it. You never see how much she really means to Mario, she's just sort of a end point of the game, not really a goal to strive for. But with Shovel Knight, you see how much he misses her, and how much he wants to be with her again, that it gives your adventure so much more meaning. Saving Shield Knight isn't just an end point of the game like Peach is, it's a goal, it's a goal you want to strive for because it has so much more emotion behind it, and I think that's one aspect of the game that they nailed so hard, the emotional impact of the story.
Hey, uh, could you, maybe, FIGURE OUT THAT QUARTER HAS TWO FREAKING MEANINGS! Thank you. Also if that was the actual joke there's a thing called beating the dead horse AND THAT POOR HORSE IS A PUDDLE OF GORE!
I have to say, after changing the genders of Shovel Knight and Shield Knight, I got super confused by the Enchantress being Shield Knight. Thanks for summarizing that
Where a lot of indie games are trying (a little too hard I feel) to be masterful works of art that revolutionize the industry and/or be highbrow narratives of drama and psychology, Shovel Knight realizes that before a game can be a good work of "art," it needs to be a good game first. And it nails it flawlessly, while still being able to put its own twist on classic gaming. Moody, in-depth, mind-blowing story? Aside from a big plot twist, not really. Genre-defining gameplay unlike anything ever seen before? No, of course not. But Shovel Knight doesn't need any of that to be amazing. It's just a really fun, heartfelt game, which makes it a work of art in its own right. And in that, I think there's a lot that many would be indie-developers can learn from Shovel Knight.
long loading isn't just in bloodborn, its also in elder scrolls. take skyrim for example. "Okay, I just entered whiterun." 5 minutes later "OK, aaaaaany minute now." you get the stuff already.
Shovel Knight is an amazing game, and the developers are doing DLCs the right way! Yacht Club is maybe a small indie studio, but big game behemoths like EA and Activision has alot to learn from Yacht Club when it comes to DLC release and content. Each Shovel Knight DLC has been almost, if not as big as the original standard game, and it all was given for free to people who already owned the original game, even if the DLC adventures was sold as seperate games.
I knew this story. All you did was sum up the games plot and tell me that an homage to classic Nes Games was an homage to classic nes games. . . . I mean it was still a good video and all but I thought we were getting the story we never knew.
11:57 But the question is: does it glitch like the games we love? Because that is the aspect I really miss about the old games, the over-the-top, texture, animation and world breaking glitches!
I've gotten maybe 90% through this game and had no idea you could volley back the enemies' projectiles. It was the mechanic I never knew.
I learned from looking at the achievement on ps4 lmao
I never knew for years
Ye I learned from looking at the switch achievement
this video wasn't bad, but it was super misleading with the title.
Heck, I feel like *I* could write a better Shovel Knight hypothesis video.
this show is meant to explain the meaning behind the story, so it is kind of the story you never knew... just like the title.
He reiterated the plot. Nothing I didn't know, nor was it anything cryptic. The only thing many players may have learned were the game's influences.
"We're a quarter of the way through the Order of No Quarter. Only three quarters of the Order of No Quarter left. Ugh, that was a mouthful - OF QUARTERS!!! Oh god I can't believe I have to say this shit!"
"That is probably the stupidest thing we've ever written. THIS'LL REALLY FUCK WITH HIM!!!"
Best part of the video.
Sir Quaffler oh the things we make Grant say.
this is a robery
what about the ending bit
Sir Quaffler no it's "I JUST WENT AL GORE ON YOUR ASS!"
Sir Quaffler i was just at that part
Truly one of the best games I've ever played. I'm not even saying this because of nostalgia, because I wasn't even around in the 90's! This game is awesome, and so are you, Treecicle.
Wow, I was so blinded by humor, nostalgia, and music, excellent voice over work, that I didn't even feel all of those seeds being planted in my brain.
I love games that say "It's our job to make the game, it's YOUR job to play it." and let you play it howeverthefuck you want.
If you played the game (hopefully you have), what was your favorite stage? Mine was The Tower Ascent because of the epic boss rush!
*****
I liked Tinker Knight's Stage purely because of the music.
Gameplay-wise though, probably Mole Knight's stage.
Treesicle Boss Rush in plus mode was WAY to hard, but my favorite stage was the Expladatorium(Plague Knight) Dat music!!!
Treesicle I still like Bright Man's stage the best.
Mine is Tinker Knights stage because if fucking Tinker Knight xD
Treesicle tinker night was really cool because of how small and cute he was in the first stage of the fight and then turns in to a giant mech
The "no quarter" thing may sound silly. But in truth, it is medieval dialect for no mercy
(laughs evilly, lightning crashes)
Il french, since very young, I've always heard "Pas de quartier", or "Pas de quartier, pas de pitié!" in tv shows, cartoons etc...
Which literally means "No quarter", and "No quarter, no mercy!"
So it always felt like common knowledge to me
In German it IS literally called "Orden ohne Gnade" which translates to "order without Mercy"
Not very creative
shovel knight is one of the most frustrating games i own
but i still love it
IKR!
That damn flying machine made my death count go from 48 to 86...... I love the game still
+Oscar of Astora why did you have to die at the undead asylum? you're so fab xD
GATO 1176 I died so you could be better than I was
yeah. That game is really hard. I died more times, then I can count...
But its still a really good game with so much good stuff!
I say this about Shovel Knight all the time, but I feel it best describes it. Shovel Knight is like that perfect nostalgic memory of old school games, only instead of disappointing you it lives up to the memory. Simply an awesome game that outdose its more expensive competition by going back to a simpler time.
I allready knew this story... i thought i would see something new.
lol yeah obviously
+Berlin Greek The actual story he told was the real-world story. Of the beginning of a gaming renaissance. Somehow I doubt you watched the whole thing.....
+GamerGenérico I feel like you as well didn't watch the whole video... And I'm usually harsh as hell when it comes to comedy critique but a lot of the jokes used were actually quite charming.
+ADAMNATOR You sure do like to jump to conclusions... However, if they didn't watch the whole thing, then lucky them... The end sucked compared to rest of the video... And the rest of the video was only average
mole knight is the best
black knight is the protoman of shovel Knight
ikr
Never really thought about it like that. NICE observation.
Black knight is the Shadow of Sonic
you have a good point
Black knight is the Meta Knight of Kirby
One does not simply talk about Shovel Knight without talking about the amazing music in detail!
"Fell into a depression so deep, he became a farmer!" I lost it at that!
Basically Thanos plot line?
A dragon blowing bubbles... like... Bubble? The NES game?
the bubbles are deadly :D
another cameo...YAAAAAAAAAAAY
Shovel Knights story got a thousand times deeper with Plague of Shadows. It's so GOOOOOD
I was considering buying this game, but this video just SOLD it to me. I will buy this game as soon as I can.
I literally Cried at the part where Shield Knight Limps towards Shovel Knight and lays her head on his shoulder. :')
NEED A SHOVEL KNIGHT MOVIE!
"Who is playing with the lights?" "ooooh Nosferatu"
Shovel Night: All the shit you already knew
+Madison Hogan This video was awesome! What are u talking about?
I agree. This guy keeps appearing in my recommendations so I give it a shot, thinking "maybe there's /actually/ hidden story I dont know about" but its always just an explanation of regular gameplay.
I personally dont enjoy their content, but others do, so good for them, I guess?
+Ian White Yeah, not saying the video isn't good, but the title is super misleading...
+Madison Hogan Why does he need to make a better video to point the fact that the title doesn't correlate with the content?
It's my first time watching anything from this channel, I clicked because it said "The story you never knew", and there was nothing I didn't know here. So yeah.
+Madison Hogan So if I don't like the food at a restaurant I'm not allowed to criticize it because I'm not a cook?
Who the hell dislikes this? Shovel Knight is a goddamned MASTERPIECE.
Probabely some COD fanbase or worst ! The Shantae fanbase because they was jealous of the awesome Knight with his fabulous Shovel.
Not a viking helmet. Actual viking helmets did not have horns contrary to popular opinion. *puts on history nerd glasses*.
I think he meant stereotype Viking helmet.
I know I was just joking around.
Thoughtful Insanity Learned that from Carmen Sandiego! :D
Opinion??, sir you mean belief *out on nerdier glasses*
darknessthebanana 44 touche
I'll give you props for this one. Always changing your formula IT'S GREAT!!!!!!!
Mari Zach :D Thanks a lot!
everytime i saw the ending i cried a little tears of joy but before shield knight came back to the fire place it were tears of sorrow
I really thought there was some secret I never knew, but the video just recapped everything I already knew in the game. It was a good appreciation video. Shovel Knight is a breath of fresh 8 bit air.
*- CATCH HER -*
Still waiting on the diglett joke....
PastorGains lol we hoped nobody would notice. you're too observant PastorGains!
HURRY DELETE HIS COMMENT!!!
Here's the joke. Diglett digs
NinjaGamer2003 Can you Diglett?
Do u Diglette-it?
Isaac (The Binding of Isaac) : The Story You Never Knew
MrMinigunMaster Game Theory really already did that.
elitebelt So?
He technically made a *theory*.
WizardXZD A GAME THEORY!
elitebelt Doesn't matter who made what. He is making a request for TREESICLE not Game Theory.
Pink Boomer Problem is, there's no official story yet other than the prologue/"epilogue".
You guys always captivate me :)
Keep on keeping on, fellas :)
LeonFirestrike :) glad to hear it buddy! we'll keep doin our thaaang
I wanted to say you should do an update on this because the two expansions really add to the story, but seeing as this was already kind of a sub par "the story you never knew" as shovel knight's story isn't convoluted and is a little simple, it probably wouldn't be the best idea.
Still though! If you put something out after the King Knight DLC comes out, I'd love to watch it :)
the first part of the video felt like game theorist made a cameo on the megaman x episode of sequilitis
Inverted Controls: The Story You Never Knew.
If you can pull that off, I'll praise you as one of teh UA-cam Gods. ^_^ Another great video by the way~! *Holds out jar of cookies*
You should do John Marston: the story you never knew.
YES!
I had a good laugh while watching this video and learned stuff of a game that I have never played!!! Great video lads!!!
SuperFlabio Thanks! We're stoked you enjoyed it!
Treesicle Please do Freedom Planet, it was also a celebration of the 16 bit era of Sonic, Megaman X series, Gunstar Heroes, and Megaman and Bass.
OH YEAH!! move aside Freddy fat bear and mario, ITS TIME TO DIG!! Hopefully a story you never knew for megaman is coming soon?
I've been asking that for months
The teaching through gameplay thing is called conveyance.
Now I want a game where the final boss and main antagonist is a bubble-blowing dragon.
Thanks.
And am I the only one who never found the Phase Locket?
I loved the boss rush. But this game was actually pretty challenging
Great video! Just subscribed! Loving Shovel Knight! Just got the amiibo and using the level up system! This game is crazy awesome!
that rainbow barfing platform in the second to last level was so rage inducing.
Time to head over to the steam store.
0:55
*In the nerdiest, most nitpicky voice possible*
Erhm, it's actually 16 bit.
Ya know when you get that tingle throughout your body when the plot turns full circle? Got that tingle. Great video
The biggest heartbreak was when my sister deleted Shovel Knight from our PlayStation to make room for Overwatch 2
Shovel Knight is easily one of the best 2-D platformers I’ve ever played
Just some suggestions,
MegaMan
Prophet/Laurence Barnes (Crysis)
Talion (Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor)
Kirby
Soap McTavish (COD Modern Warfare 1-3)
Cortana (Halo)
Aiden Pearce (Watch Dogs)
Michael De Santa, Trevor Philipps, or Franklin Clinton, either one (Grand Theft Auto V)
Commander Shepard (Mass Effect)
Starkiller (Star Wars The Force Unleashed)
The Guardians (Destiny)
Connor and Edward Kenway (Assassin's Creed)
Marcus Michael Fenix (Gears Of War)
YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS TO ALL OF THEM ESPECIALLY THE GUARDIANS
Who's here PSYCHED for Specter of Torment?
He's probably going to control like ass
ME! Specter knight was my favorite to begin with but now he gets his own campaign!
Wild Freeze I remember when the update was new. He did become my new favorite character and I do believe that the game needs to add polar knight campaign because he is very mysterious
Personally, Shovel Knight is my favorite game of all time.
Man, that post-credits scene makes me go "D'awww" EVERY SINGLE TIME
6:10 I've played through the game at least five times. I've beaten it twice on PC, twice on the 3DS, and once on the Wii U. I've beaten the Plague Knight DLC twice. I've completed the challenge mode on the three above mentioned versions. To this day, I never knew that entrance was there. GG me, GG.
hey is there any secret bosses on the 3ds version because i got it and cant find any
My Friends No, although if you have the amiibo then you don't really need exclusive bosses. Especially for the Wii U, where the amiibo gives multiplayer (my one playthrough on the Wii U was a multiplayer playthrough with the new items and stuff and I must say, trying to play through the levels with someone constantly trying to screw you over at every turn is something all right).
Ah yes my very first and top 10 favorite treesicle video
This was a really sick video! Just finished Plague of Shadows, so I was on a Shovel Knight video splurge and came across this. SamBlueBox Gaming :D
this is what games are about! no huge story on the surface, play not tell just as in television as the saying goes "show dont tell" the same applies to our great interactive medium that is so different from the others. books you tell, videos you show, and games you play
Could you do Jacket and Beard from Hotline Miami 1 and 2?

Good video, keep them coming!
You just earned a subscriber bud! I love shovel knight :]
You can say I'm digging it
......
I know.
I was really disappointed that you left out the dream sequences, they added so much more to the plot of the game.
JESUS FUCK, CALM DOWN
I LOVE THE CULTURE IN THIS GAME!!!
The part from the beginning up to 2:42 just seems like a blatant ripoff of Egoraptor's Mega Man X Sequelitis.
Double Dragon : The story you never knew
It was my favorite game as a kid.
Btw..great video on the Shovel Knight. :)
I love how I found this channel it had like 214 subs and now it has 100,000 and up
Brandon Williams You're an OG man!
Damn Right, you should do one of these on Mega Man
I get the feeling that these guys watch an episode of Sequelitis before writing this.
Fo' real
+Andrew Halverson I was waiting for him to yell something about riding on bubbles.
Can't wait for the specter of torment dlc
Love this series bro
Pingas the Hedgehog Glad to hear it Pingas! Tell Sonic I said wassup!
I haven’t been moved by a 2D pixel platformer like this in a long time. Simple but lovely artwork, basic but fun gameplay, cliche but moving story.
I CAN'T DIG IT? WHAT DO I DOOOOOO?
This is one my favorite episodes.
you forgot the music, it is one of the reasons that i love this game
This should've been called "Shovel Knight: A reiteration of the plot"
I didn't know that you can hit back the magic balls. Was a nice challenge xD
The order of no quarter actually is an old saying that means they don't take prisoners, they just kill em on the spot
long loading isn't just in bloodborn, its also in elder scrolls. take skyrim for example. "Okay, I just entered whiterun." 5 minutes later "OK, aaaaaany minute now." you get the stuff already.
Will you ever do a version on the plague knight side?
DO PHEONIX WRIGHT!!!
I second this..
lol
Shovel Knight is an amazing game, and the developers are doing DLCs the right way! Yacht Club is maybe a small indie studio, but big game behemoths like EA and Activision has alot to learn from Yacht Club when it comes to DLC release and content.
Each Shovel Knight DLC has been almost, if not as big as the original standard game, and it all was given for free to people who already owned the original game, even if the DLC adventures was sold as seperate games.
I always liked to think of Shovel Knight as a product of 20-25 years of gaming hindsight
I knew this story. All you did was sum up the games plot and tell me that an homage to classic Nes Games was an homage to classic nes games. . . . I mean it was still a good video and all but I thought we were getting the story we never knew.
Renaisance, that's a very good analysis!
I always play inverted! Non-inverted controls are impossible to use!
I wonder, Treesicle, will you be doing an update video, putting in the canon happenings of Plague Knight's?
"Who plays inverted?!"
*Raises hand in shame*
HAPPY NEW YEAR

Fox McCloud: The Story You Never Knew.
Good Luck!
Could you please make a "Plague Knight: The Story You Never Knew" Based off the Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows expansion?
11:57 But the question is: does it glitch like the games we love? Because that is the aspect I really miss about the old games, the over-the-top, texture, animation and world breaking glitches!
No, but look up the butt cheat. It'll keep ya entertained for a while.
The story you never knew of
Isaac from golden sun
Shantae
Shulk
Or lucas/ness/ninten
Do you plan on covering Specter of Torment and / or Plague of Shadows?
Shovel Knight is like a combinations of different NES Games like Megaman, SMB3, Duck Tales, Castlevania, Legend of Zelda...
