  • Cutting through the rugged ranges and rolling hills of the Snowy Valleys is the fast-flowing Tumut River. It’s the scenic route between Tumut and Gundagai, passing through and around the idyllic rural countryside making for one of the best canoeing trips available.
    Paddling the Tumut River is an adventure that we just couldn’t pass up. So we set off on our three-day journey in two red Wenonah Prospectors (thanks to Paddle and Portage Canoes in the Kangaroo Valley) and a drift boat for company. We launched from Jones Bridge, beneath Blowering Dam wall, heading downstream 22.5km to Riverglade Caravan Park where we rested our weary arms for the night. Jones Bridge Reserve sits under the infamous poplar trees that are the star of autumn in Tumut.
    We cruise under the historic Tumut River Junction Bridge which neighbours the Lions Junction Park. It’s the perfect spot to laze about by the cool breeze of the river. In town, a walking track meanders by the river, passing through pretty parklands until it meets Riverglade Caravan Park and around to the Tumut Wetlands.
    Riverglade Caravan Park rests on the banks of the Tumut River with a range of accommodation to suit campers and glampers accordingly. Nearby is the Tumut River Brewing Co who kindly fed us pizza and kept us hydrated with their award-winning craft beer.
    The spectacular vistas along the river are matched by the quality of fishing. The Tumut is one of the finest trout rivers in NSW. To break up the paddling we picked up our fly rods, while others decided an unexpected swim was the best way to catch a break. Fly fishing in the Tumut River is one of many ways to experience the magnificent beauty of the river, especially if you don’t have the skills necessary to enjoy from the water.

    Funny what ya stumble onto on YT. I was looking for a different kind of canoe trip and found yours... glad I did. I live in the UK and canoe quite a bit in the south west. My mate was born in Tumut! I visited the Snowy mountains back in 1988. I lived in WA for 8 years also. One day I'm gonna do this river! Right off to find episode 2. Good work fellas.

    Wow that looks like a great trip. I'm off to watch Ep2 now.
    Are you able tell us what the river level was at the time? Is there a minimum level needed to run it?

    • @TomsOutdoors
      @TomsOutdoors  2 роки тому +1

      It was about 5.5 megalitres a day, You can run it at the minimum level it just takes more paddling as the flow is lower!
