  • In this video, young DIY mechanic Aiman will show you how to drain an engine coolant from a 2009 Toyota Prius Hybrid (which is the same as model years 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Draining an engine coolant is the first step to changing, replacement or flushing the system, which Aiman will show how to do it in the future videos. This video deals exclusively with the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) coolant change not the inverter cooling system which is separate but using the same radiator. A video on how to do just that will be uploaded in the near future and the link will be provided below.
It's noteworthy to mention that they are 3 drain plugs for Prius Gen II, engine drain plug, radiator drain plug and drain cock plug located under coolant heat storage tank. The drain at the coolant heat recovery canister is the best choice of the three drains above. As always, if in doubt please refer the tech manual.
The total capacity of coolant inside the entire system is 9 quarts but about 3 quarts will remain inside the heater core. You should be able to drain 6 quarts by jacking the car on right side and tilting down the driver side to get most of the coolant out.
Be careful when draining the coolant and opening the plug from the Coolant Heat Storage Tank (CHST or CHRS canister) as the liquid will be hot and might cause burn if precautions are not exercised. It is also preferable to disconnect the battery when performing repair such as this on Prius.
Toyota recommends using the genuine pink OEM Super Long Life Coolant (SLLC) antifreeze from Toyota dealership but you can always opt for aftermarket such as Valvoline, Zerex Asian, Prestone Extended Life or any other Silicate free, phosphate Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT) coolant whether concentrated or already 50/50 pre-mix, available either at local auto part stores such as AutoZone, Advance, NAPA, Pep Boys, O'Reilly or Walmart.
Another tip when draining coolant is not to open the radiator cap in the beginning so that the suction will drain the coolant in the reservoir bottle, but this video will also show you how to drain the overflow bottle independently.
In the future videos, Aiman will show you how to refill the coolant, bleed the system using airlift tool, change the coolant control valve, remove, replace and install the heater pump and more.

The way you showed how to drain the inverter coolant is a lot better than the other videos I saw. Thanks for explaining this how you did. Best video on this I’ve seen!

Hi, Aiman, I was wondering where you get those part diagrams and the other printouts you show in your Prius videos. They would be so helpful! Thanks and keep up the good work!

Nice Video. I wanted to do this for my Prius V 2013 , but not sure if the drain plug is located in the same location. Can someone please confirm how to get to the engine coolant drain plug on Toyota Prius V 2013. Thank you. I subscribed

Hello, my sister has a '01 Prius and I am trying to follow your tutorial. As I am looking underneath on the driver side in front of the tire I do not see the drain plug for the coolant reservoir. Thanks.

Hi, this tutorial is for the 2004-2009 Prius models, so it might not have the same positioning for all the internals shown in this video. You may be better off taking a look at another tutorial! Best wishes and have a good day!
