    As a person who attended public school growing up, I was always skeptical about homeschooling. However, watching this video has opened my eyes to the wonderful opportunities kids get through homeschooling. It was beautiful seeing a family learning together. Thank you!

    I loved when you said "you could put it on the other foot but it won't feel as nice!" when you were working with Solomon with his shoes. Giving kids information to make choices that feel good to them gives them a healthy kind of autonomy that I think is important. You seem really good at finding ways to teach your kids ways they have options and give them information to make good choices. I'm sure I'm not saying anything new, but your a pretty awesome mom and teacher.

      I agree about the shoe thing (and about offering information and choices in general). I thought that was fantastic!

    Hi Andrea... I just found your videos... what a lovely family :)
    I'm only just watching your week 1 homeschool video so this might be explained in a future video... but I'm wondering if you can explain more about the binder system your using for your homeschooling? I'm curious to see what you have in them for the different ages and how you decide what to include? Thanks and God bless

      Here are videos I've done for our first grade binder and one for the binders. (I haven't done a Kindergarten binder video, but it has the least amount of things in it, so not really anything additional to what I already show.) If you still have questions after the videos, let me know! ua-cam.com/video/ORnl3UMq09s/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/_vZpNOE4GR0/v-deo.html

    Hi Andrea, loving the video. I did want to ask (I think ace is down right now)are the paces available online? Only if you know off the top of your head, thanks. My daughter is doing great with the traditional paces but my son, I have experienced (with a free online and 1month free with another curr but too expensive ) he does well with plugging the answers in after the info is read to him. He reads at his level but has other things thatwe are working on.

      I know for a time they had a computer version of the curriculum, but I don't know if they still do. I am going to lean toward the idea that they don't, but I'm not certain.

    Hi Andrea, I am wondering if you would be able to do a walk through the high school ace? roughly how many hours is needed to be put aside for this grade? Thanks from Australia ;)

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  8 років тому +6

      ACE is very self-paced so it's extremely variable. Thomas has always tended to have a wandering mind and it has taken him about 5-6 hours a day to get his work done throughout every grade and this year seems to be about the same. (He's doing Algebra I, English I, World History, World Geography, Biology and Etymology from ACE. He's also reading from the Great Books series, doing Greek lessons and working on a few other elective classes of our own making.) Asher has always had a "let's get this done" attitude and he accomplishes his work in about half that time. I graduated from an ACE school and I was usually done with my school work by early afternoon following a regular school schedule. I also graduated at 16 because I worked ahead. Classroom learning is efficient for teachers, but ACE's method is very efficient for students. No one gets held up by slower learners and no one gets pushed too fast by quicker learners.

    Do you have to be certified to homeschool your kids? And I think you takes about it before, but what made you chooses Homeschool?

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  8 років тому +6

      No, you don't have to be certified. The principal is that you are responsible for raising your own children including teaching them math, reading, etc. You can choose to hire someone to teach them or do it yourself. Because of compulsory education laws, states have some level of requirement that you inform them that you are doing the work yourself rather than hiring it done. In our state, we send a yearly notification to the county school board. I'm not sure what other states do.
      I made my own wedding dress and wedding cake. We've fixed up our house from being the run-down sad, little place we bought. We have our own business that we started from home 11 years ago. In all areas of life we want to experience life ourselves. It's easy to buy something, but much more fulfilling to build it. That's how we approach parenting. It's really important to us; we homeschool because we're a family and we want to raise our children ourselves. Over the years as our family has grown there have been some things we've had to give up because we just don't have time to do it all. We'd rather give up the things that are less important so we can devote our money and energy to what truly matters to us.

    hiya andrea and family,may i ask is it tricky to home school with your children when thomas is the oldest and is at a higher level and his brothers and sisters or that any of your children are not as strong at certain subjects then the others,best wishes from the uk x

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  8 років тому +2

      The curriculum we use is "self-teaching" so the kids are able to work on their own. If they don't understand something, they come to me, but otherwise they are very independent. It's got built in check points so I can keep an eye on what they're doing without having to be super hands-on. One of my children tends to struggle more than the others, so I spend more time helping him. He's very creative and gets overwhelmed by new information. Once I go over it with him, he usually takes off and does fine.

      You must not be very well versed in evolution. I've read Darwin and watched countless debates with Dawkins, Dennett, Hichens, etc. I do not have enough faith to believe in the non-sense of the concept. I'll be doing a video on it one of these months if you'd like to keep watching.

    good job! I can tell you worked really hard on the video. I liked that we got to see how the kids interacted together but also how they handled school work individually. I feel like each segment was just long enough so that it wasn't boring or repetitive. I liked that we got to see some fun activities like the nature notebooks and coloring mixed in with more tedious work like writing and reading. I feel like overall the video was well balanced and very informative. Keep up the good work!

    You might not reply because this was posted like 2 years ago, but what do you do instead of electives that are offered in public schools. Someone like me, who is interested in film and movie production, takes classes that the school provides that is taught by someone who has professional knowledge in that subject manor. I’m not saying you have no knowledge in their subjects; I know you have knowledge in the required subjects and other things that would go on in a school, but how would you do as I explained with their own personal interests in life. There are things like choir singers, acting, and journalism that someone would need credits for to get into colleges. I am just confused on how that would work out.

    I don't usually comment on anything I read or watch:) but I wanted you to know how encouraged I feel after watching your videos! I grew up home-schooled (my dad was military so it made this life a little easier). When dating my husband he mentioned homeschooling. We never really had a moment where we decided for certain this is what we are doing, we kind of just started having kids and teaching them. I'm pregnant with our fifth and homeschooling my two eldest, 3rd and 1st grade. I ran across your youtube channel and find it feels like I'm sitting to chat with a friend?:) If that makes sense?:) Especially on the days I need to regroup and gather some kind of encouragement for this lifestyle. I love how organized you are. Keep up the videos, they help a mama like me out more than you know;)

    That was a wonderful video! I truly enjoyed watching each of your children, they each have beautiful souls, you and Tom are doing such an amazing job raising them! If the rest of the world was more like your family, the world would be a much better place to live. Your children are learning so much more than just arithmetic, grammar, science and etc....they are learning to be the people that God wants and knows that they can and should be. Watching your children(your whole family) is such a blessing and I will be patiently(or not!) waiting for another video like this!! :)

    What a great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it. My younger brothers and I attended private schools using the ACE curriculum for 7th through 12 grades. (We would have done it sooner, I'm sure, but ACE was just starting to become well-known at that time.) (Yes, I am old. :-) ) Also, I don't have any children but I'm a big fan of homeshooling and would have done it if I'd had kids, and both of my younger brothers homeschooled their kids (4 each) using ACE from preschool through high school.
    So for all those reasons this video brought back lots of memories and good feelings for me. I'm looking forward to watching your children make their way through the year and see how you do all of your things. All very interesting!

    How come your baby is well behaved during school? Mine crawls and climbs on everything and gets into trouble, he just turned one. It's a challenge to devote time to my kids when my baby is naughty all morning.

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  8 років тому +6

      I think some babies just have that "get into everything" personality and others don't! Thomas was always doing naughty things, getting into things and climbing things when he was little. Eden was a real climber, too. It can be difficult! I have learned over the years to make good use of the high chair. When my babies get too busy I put them in it to keep them safe while I do what needs done. They might fuss a little, but they get used to it. (I'm not talking super long times here, but 15-20 minutes.) Once they get used to sitting for a length of time, I feel it helps increase their attention span in general and they tend to be more content to sit and play with blocks or sit and cuddle with one of the big kids during school time.

      +SuperNatural Sims My early graying hair was inherited from my grandma (lots of my cousins got it, too!) It can be stressful sometimes dealing with 8 kids in a small house, though. It can be stressful dealing with 2 kids in a big house. Life is just stressful sometimes!

      If they finish early, we either do extra elective work or they can begin on the next year's work. (I graduated at 16 because I worked ahead.) On any particular day, when they finish their work they go play or do what other projects they want to do.

    I'm so stuck between wanting to homeschool my 5 year old or not. Right now he's in part-time public school, 3 hours a day, 4 days a week. He really struggles. We are finding out he has sensory issues, adhd, and might be on the spectrum for autism. I'm not claiming anything though, he is starting to see a behavioral specialist to help with his troubles.
    Thanks for sharing! Your family inspires me in so many ways :-)

      Perhaps it's just you. I can assure you (since I'm here everyday) that _lots_ of work is getting done. Keep in mind you're getting a disjointed view of about 15 minutes duration of an entire school day. You would get very bored if I made a video that just showed kids sitting there quietly working for long periods of time. Snooze fest. I don't bother with that.

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  8 років тому +1

      I'm going to answer "no", but at the same time, I think everyone has areas they struggle in and some have greater struggles than others. (I'm sure you can testify to that!) That being said, one of the things that is important to me as a mom is to help my kids recognize the areas they struggle in and find ways to overcome those struggles and also recognize that no one is "normal." One of the problems I have with things being diagnosed (or labelled) is that it can (but of course, not always) lead to a person feeling like there is something wrong with them and that thought shapes their life in a negative way. I prefer to think of what many people label as illnesses as a variation of normal personalities. And just like people who are on the short side have to live life climbing on stools to reach what they need, people with certain personality types have to make adjustments to life that some other people don't need to make. And that's okay. In fact, it's normal. Perhaps you can start taking notes of the things that you find help you do your school work. Experiment and try different ideas until you find for yourself what methods work best with your particular personality. Maybe you can then help others who struggle with the same things!

    i know a few friends who are homeschooling their children (military families) and theyve express concerns about social skills. do you have any pointers i could give them? they both have 2 children.

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  8 років тому +1

      I think that they probably shouldn't worry too much. Sharing, cooperation, politeness, etc. should be encouraged within the family just like it would be with people outside the family. Social skills are social skills and families are the ideal place to practice them. That being said, we all enjoy expanding our community and belonging to something bigger than us. The skill of friendliness and hospitality is really important for parents to model for their children. For us, regular activities like our weekly trip to the library, grocery store, etc. make us part of the community. We try to establish relationships with the people we see regularly and purposely invite them into our home so we can really create that community that we need. Our kids play with other children almost on a daily basis because we invite people in, we take part in neighborhood life and we regularly engage in community activities. A library card, a local newspaper that tells about local events and a willingness to invite acquaintances in and make them friends are great ways to be social! It takes time and repetition (two things that might be hard for military families) to build a community, but it's worth the effort!

    How do your children find friends?

    • @TheMillsFamilyVlog
      @TheMillsFamilyVlog  8 років тому

      We live in a small town where it's easy to get to know other people whether it's at our weekly trip to the library, playing at the park or just roaming around our neighborhood. In the houses immediately surrounding us there are 18 children, not counting our own, which means there are 26 children just in our little spot. My ancestors were some of the first people to settle our county and we have deep roots which means we pretty much know everyone, at least by sight. With our business, we have new people coming to our house all the time and we just try to be hospitable an invite new people in when we meet them. We have a group that comes on Sunday for church and another group that comes on Monday for "Mom School." On Wednesdays we see our library friends. On Fridays Tom and the older boys got out and play Magic the Gathering with a bunch of guys. We're part of the community even if we don't go to school.

      Some people like to eat all their meals in restaurants and some people like to do their own cooking. Some people like to outsource their children's educations, some people like to do it themselves. For us, home education is just another natural part of being a family, like cooking with our children, playing with them, working on chores together with them. etc.

    Hi Andrea. There is so much I want to say, meaning to talk to you, for me to learn and not have missconceptions 😄. In a good way, with a good heart, is just that I want to learn. I have seen so many videos of large families were children have to take roles that do not correspond to their age. Were mom and dad decide to have a large family and then they have to take care of the children and the household. That breaks my heart, since those roles are hard as adults imagine as a child. Watching your videos I love how organize you are (since I am like that jaja), but with flexibility and taking into consideration their age, opinion and learning process, and without forgeting thet you are the mom and the adult. Those birthdays are great!! Also that even when you are home centered, you have children, friends and other people that interact with your children even when they seem to have a different system in their home. I was not given the opportunity to have children, which breaks my heart, but its great to watch your videos. Regarding the pace system. Is a pace a unit? A discussion of a concept? If the do several in a day, do you think they understand those concepts in depht or it is just memorization in order to advance in the priviledge system? I know it varies with children, but wanted to know your experience. Also, do they keep improving their writing skills (handwriting) thruout the curriculum? Love watching you kiss Thomas, as said in other large family videos there are so many children and so much to do that moms sometimes can't have those moments. Thank you and sorry for the looong comment! Buen día!

      Instead of using a conventional textbook, ACE publishes each chapter as a booklet (PACE stands for Packet of Accelerated Christian Education.) Depending on the grade, one PACE may be from 27-65 pages long. There are 3 sections within the PACE followed by a quiz. At the end, there is a practice test. After the PACE is done, there is a test to complete. It would be very unlikely that someone could finish more than one in a day! Even though Asher and Judah finished one on the first day, they've only finished 4 total now that we're 2 1/2 weeks into school. We hope to test on 2 PACEs per week. (Each subject has 12 PACEs per year.) Handwriting isn't taught as a separate subject, but is covered in Word Building (Spelling) and English. Judah and Justus are both still getting the hang of cursive, so it's not exactly beautiful yet. Asher can write very lovely cursive, but he thinks it isn't efficient so he only does it if he absolutely has to. :) Thomas has very nice cursive writing and almost always writes neatly. He's got a bit of a Type A personality!
