Kayak Duck Hunting 2020 | Awesome Solo Mixed Bag
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 вер 2024
- With the Virginia duck hunting late season officially in full swing and temperatures dropping I headed to a large beaver pond to try a solo kayak duck hunt. I had been primarily seeing mallards, gadwall, and black ducks in there while scouting and had a feeling they would be using the area when cold temperatures and high winds set in. The morning got off to a slow start but I was able to pickup a couple birds, however the real action started mid morning and provided an insane mixed bag. Definitely one of my favorite waterfowl hunts I've been on, hope y'all enjoy!

This is def one of my favorite hunts of yours. Incredible day and so awesome to Double 2 times in a row and black ducks on top of it. Congrats Thomas!
Thanks Titus!! Glad you enjoyed it. Definitely one I’ll be pleased with for a long time to come
I've been duck hunting for 30 years and always enjoy your videos. I hunt Currituck a lot and Black Ducks are a true trophy! You have really grown into quite a sportsman...been watching you for a couple years. Keep it up. Great job!
Thank you Joe, I really appreciate the kind words! That's awesome that you have been waterfowling that long, I hope to be able to keep the passion for it for many years to come. Not many better areas to be doing it on the coast than Currituck too
Wow! Great video and hunt Thomas. You keep plugging along and you are rewarded with a morning like this. For those that comment about your shooting, nice to see your back to back doubles.
Where I grew up hunting in south east Louisiana our bread and butter duck were Gadwall... we called them Grey ducks.
Seems like Cajuns have a nick name for all the ducks.
Cool times in the Virginia swamp!
Thanks Sly!! It hasn't been easy but the challenges of a season are just as valuable to me as the successes. I definitely wouldn't mind having gadwall as a bread and butter duck, we call them grey ducks up here too quite a bit!
That was an awesome duck hunt! I don't duck hunt anymore but this hunt reminded me of my past waterfowl adventures! I loved the double on the black ducks. Keep up the great videos!
Thank you Bruce! I'm glad the videos could take you back to your waterfowling days, should be more videos soon!
WOW! Super awesome is right! Congrats on the double/double!! Beautiful birds! What a great lifetime memory. Nice way to end up the season.
Thanks Colby! One of my favorite waterfowling memories to date for sure! Two more days of our season left here, hoping to sneak out before class on the last one
Probably the best solo hunt I’ve seen on UA-cam! Could not have asked for anything better! Nice double on those black ducks and gadwalls!
Thanks Zach! Really appreciate it. Those doubles were pretty fun, definitely got the blood pumping
The best waterfowl videos on UA-cam my friend 👍
Really appreciate it man! Glad to hear you enjoy them
Next time on Hoke Outdoors: “How I contracted a deadly disease by picking up a duck” 😂
Haha I'm just surprised I haven't caught beaver fever yet from hunting these swamps
Dude, that black duck double followed by the gaddy double! Awesome!
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed
Oh man! Stoked for you brother. Wish we had seen birds like that this week in NC
Thanks Mike! Haven’t had many around our parts either but every dog has his day
Those 4 birds were nice. Great vid.
Thank man! Glad you enjoyed!
Sweet hunt Thomas! I'll trade you mallards for those black ducks anytime.
Thanks Matt! Get in on the trip I'm gonna do next season, go target them in the NE
Nice hunt Thomas. Congrats on your black duck double up. Keep on slayin.
Thank you! Gonna try to finish out duck season with a couple more good ones hopefully
Awesome hunt and your best footage yet. From one Virginia water fowler to another.
Thanks man! Really appreciate it, hope your VA season has been going well!
Virginia Outdoors Unlimited I’ve gone three times and come away three ducks. It’s hard out here in the south West Virginia mountains.
Nice shooting! Congrats on the double-double!
Thanks man!
Been waiting on this one! Awesome hunt.
Thanks Matt, hope it was worth the wait!
Great video buddy!!! Sad the seasoned almost over
Thanks Tristan! Hopefully we can all make the most of what's left. I know we'll all be chomping at the bit to get back out there about a week into February
My taxidermy bill would be high after that day lol
Wish I had gotten that gadwall mounted
Keep up the good work. You'll go somewhere
Back to back doubles! Great hunt!
Thank you!
This was a great hunt, I would have liked to have been there with you!!!!!
Thanks Roger!!
Love this video
Thanks Craig! This was definitely my favorite one from that season
About as badass a hunt as you can have dude. congrats
Thanks Brady!
nice shooting tex
Thanks brother!
Wow! You're a good shot, dude! I too have just started hunting out of my kayak, but I can't hit them like you can. How far do you have to paddle to reach some of your spots? and what cameras do you use. I see the GoPro on your cap. What's the other camera. I think I'm going to start filming my hunts. Great video.
Thank you! I go through hot steaks and slumps like everyone else but I always seem to shoot well towards the end of the season. Most of my spots are between 1-2 miles paddle. The other camera I was using on this hunt was another GoPro that I had clamped to a stake. Filming videos is a lot of fun, I’d recommend it for sure
That was awesome! You have a great place to get some action! Beautiful birds!
Thank you! It's one of my favorite places in the world down in there, never know what to expect
great video Thomas smashing doubles
Thanks man, better to be lucky than good sometimes
Great hunt Thomas! Been hoping for a day like that just doesn’t seem to present itself
Thanks Slate! Keep on giving it a shot and it'll happen for you soon enough, having a full force migration would make it easier though
I'm learning a lot from these videos! I liked the shot you edited in from the camera on the side (not the go gro on your hat). It shows me that your spread isn't too far from your hide. I think maybe that's why I'm missing a lot, my spread is much further out than yours is! Good to know!
Thanks man, I'm glad to hear that you were able to pick up some ideas from the video! In this spot I often see the birds pushed up tight to the brush line which is why I put my decoys out in that way
Great video. Nice mixed bag
Thank you Roger!
Nice job man he’ll of a limit
Thanks Dalton!
AWESOME hunt!! Hope to get a Black duck one of these days!!! Love it hunts man!! Great work!! What type of gun/shells/chokes do u use? Would like to see a vid about that and ur dekes and spread and more tips and advice of kayak hunting. This is my 2nd year in a yak, LOVE IT!!
Nice shooting
Thanks!
Awesome solo hunt bud!
Thanks Daniel!!
Best video nice hunt man congrats
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome hunt congrats great video.
Thank you David! I appreciate it
Thomas how much difference is there in a black duck and a Florida mottled we have down here they look really similar.
Would love to see you do a cooking video even if on a separate channel, I just discovered your channel today and I love it subscribed 😊
I've done a couple but I'll try and make a point to do some early this offseason. I'm just not a very good cook and tend to get by on the basics so not sure how much I have to really show but worth a shot
Virginia Outdoors Unlimited thank you I just really appreciate outdoor videos and cooking videos 😊 your content is really good
Nice work!!!!
Thank you!
Good shooting love the solo hunting!
Thanks man! Just something about a solo hunt..
@@HokeOutdoors couldn't agree more keep up the good work!🍻
Love the videos man keep up the good work, I also live and hunt in Virginia and was wondering what county this hunt was in and what county do you do most of your duck hunting? new to hunting and I’m looking to find some big ducks, mostly woodies in the swamp I hunt
nice job keep them coming
Thanks, will do!
Beautiful hunt! Birds in NC have been stale!
Thanks Ryan! Y'all still been able to find a few?
Birds have been stale in NC the past few years sadly.
Awesome hunt.
Thank you
Awesome shooting
Thank you!
Favorite video!
Glad you enjoyed!
Congratulations !
Thanks you!
Awesome hunt!!!!
Thanks Joshua!
Nice job man! Keep it up
Thanks Eric!
I'm also a VA duck hunter. This mixed bag is awesome to see in VA. I need to get more species varieties in my duck hunting. Where I hunt we main see woodies and ring necks. I am also interesting in the Franchi Affinity and I was wonder what choke you have in it? It looks like you made a couple far shots in this video.
Thanks man! Nothing wrong with those two but big ducks are always nice for sure. I have a Carlson's Light Modified in my Franchi, pretty open pattern but I'm confident with it out to 40-45 yards. 45 was probably the furthest shot I took this day
Hey what's up kid...That drake Gaddy is a mounter for sure..I've shot Hundreds..That's one you want..So I'm a harsh critic. But if you are truly about waterfowl hunting and the birds in n general....You know the basics..I can see that.only problem I got is long shots with no dog to get cripples, and the most important thing....Please stop water squatting....Duck hunting is shooting birds in flight..Honestly who wants to see so.eone shoot still target...lol let's watch deeer hunting if that was the case...BTW I subscribed to the channel so just keep moving forward
Sharpshooter! Do you shoot a full choke? Modified?
Carlsons Light Modified
I take very few shots beyond 40 yards so that constriction fits my needs
@@HokeOutdoors sweet man. Thank you!
Nice hunt
Sucks the limits there are as they are, Ohio is 4 mallards and 3 geese late season we just shot 27 the other day
Nice! Is what it is in the end, still able to kill enough for dinner and that's what matters to me
Nice shooting.
Thank you!
wish I could hunt that late in the season. here in Canada we were froze up by November
Yeah hunted into January is nice but y’all still get a lot more days you can hunt that we don’t
Do you have a floating blind tag for you kayak? I haven't been out all season so I enjoy watching your video's.
I do, gotta have one if you use burlap like I do to conceal the kayak (only east of 95). Glad you enjoyed them so far this season!
@@HokeOutdoors I was just curious, because I am looking at making a track mounted blind system for Native SP13. I hunt mostly salt marshes and hope to be back in it next season. Hope you finish the season strong and stay safe.
Great videos, do you hunt west of the 95 at all?
How do u find big ducks in the swamp all I really find it woodies
Well done man. What blind are you using in your yak?
Good shooter!
Awesome hunt man💪💪 great shooting. I noticed you were shooting Kent. What number shot?
Thank you! Shooting 3 inch #2s on this hunt
Virginia Outdoors Unlimited I just bought a box of #3 Kent’s. They hit hard. Pretty impressed other than how dirty they ran in my gun
great vid
Thank you!
@@HokeOutdoors ill be deployed next year duck time so Ill be watching out for your vids
Yessir
👍🏻👍🏻
They are hens drakes have a green bill
The black ducks?? A drake black duck has a yellow bill
Great shooting! What gun are you rolling with?
Thanks man! Shooting a franchi affinity 3
i see youwere using kent shells what shot size were ya using??
3 inch #2 shot I think
Nice hunt man! What gun are you shooting?
Thank you! I shoot a Franchi Affinity 3
Great hunt! What kind of pfd are you wearing?
Thank you! Linking the PFD below

How do you go about obtaining permission to hunt private land? I live in Texas and would love to know how you go about even finding the owner on some of the land you hunt.
Apps like OnX maps or Basemaps make it pretty easy to get an address or phone number of a landowner
Come on to the west port of va for geeeeeeeees I have seen a couple plos the limit is 5a parson
I make it out there a few times every season
Which number choke and shells do you use for duck hunting ?
Light Modified choke and Kent Faststeel
Do you have a video of your kayak blind? Did you make it?
I do not but I hope to have that video out sometime this spring. I just use burlap that I've cut to fit my kayak though. One piece is about 8 x 2 ft and covers the front of the kayak and me and another piece is about 4 x 2 ft and covers the back of the kayak.
What shells were you using?
On this hunt I believe it was primarily Kent Faststeel 3 inch #2s
Need to mount a black duck
Eventually I’ll get one for the wall. I keep on pillow casing the drakes I shoot
Did you change guns?
Nope have been shooting my Franchi for the past 2 years now
What gun and shot size are you shooting
Franchi Affinity, shooting 3 inch #2s of some variety
Dang, you guys can kill a lot of birds down there. In Wisconsin we only get a 3 duck limit.
Not even worth killing 3 ducks- i get 7
How come you didn't make the Virginia 2-A protest, to help protect our rights ?
Because I wanted to hunt that morning...
@@HokeOutdoors I digress, it is not my intentions to create hostilities, merely point out, other people braved the cold weather, difficult traffic conditions, & schedules, to show support to protect there 2-A rights, the same rights you seem to take for granted....
Just my humble opinion....
if you knew how to call things would be a lot easier
What makes you think I don’t know how to call? Don’t need to be hammering a hen mallard call, drake whistles and a quack or two gets them in this time of year
@@HokeOutdoors There wasn't even a cadence blown. Sure a drake whistle can kill a few ducks in late January, but that's a few ducks. All I'm saying is a five note greeting call would've killed you more ducks. Ive hunted the entire country including the eastern shore of Virginia and around DC. A soft greeting call and feed leads to more dead ducks, in my experience.
is this tidal?
Close to but not on tidal water
Rip KOBE
He knew to much on the Clintons
That duck looked gross can't imagine the smell that's all you lol.
Lol I have a tendency to hold on things like that longer than I should’ve, would’ve thrown it right back in the drink if I realized how decomposed it was
Where in Virginia do you hunt?
Benjamin Scharfstein you live in Virginia? I live in spotsylvania and had trouble finding birds. This is only me second season in Virginia and having a heck of a time.
@@kianatom3 I live in Bristol VA which is half in VA and half in TN. I haven’t seen or killed a lot in the area this year. My dad and I ended up goring to Mexico to kill birds😂.
South Central VA for me

wut.
Why do you always water swat, it’s pretty messed up.
How is it messed up? It’s the most sure fire way to have clean, ethical kills in my opinion
Mad Bass’n there ain’t a thing wrong with water swatting. Unless you hunt for the simple challenge of shooting flying birds.
