I'm sure Paul just does it naturally (all the nuances) without too much thought - somehow - but that's his genius. From watching and studying Paul's singing inflections I can say part of that "unintentional grit" you refer to is what I believe to be Paul smiling as wide as he can pretty much ear to ear while flaring his nostrils he is also pressing his tongue to the bottom of his teeth and using his larynx enunciating every word.
