DIY Leather Book Binding Tutorial Part 2: Leather Binding and Cover Art
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- This is part 2 of my instructional series on rebinding paperback and hardcover books in leather. The first video focused on removing the pages from the original book, gilding the page edges, and preparing the text for a new cover. Check out this link if you'd missed part 1:
• DIY Leather Book Bindi...
This video focuses on making and decorating a new, leather-bound cover for the book. I don't go into detail on how I design my cover art, but let me know if you're interested in a video on that topic!
If you are interested in any of the supplies I feature, click the link below for a one-stop shop on my Amazon storefront. Buying there doesn't cost any extra and it helps to support the channel!

Also, yes please, make videos about how you do the cover art as well as the press.
Glad to know there's interest! I know it takes me a bit to get each of these videos out, but I'll get to those other topics as soon as I can!
This is fabulous. Can't wait to try it!
@@ingeniusdesigns Yes please! You made designing look so effortless but I'm feeling stuck.
This … is about the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen.
Wow, that is some high praise! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
I think your bookbinding video is the clearer and less intimidating one I've seen! really well done and thank you
Thanks so much! I'm so glad that was your reaction, because that's exactly what I was hoping for.
Using the vinyl tubes for a curved spine is GENIUS!!!
Thanks! It's always nice to discover an answer right under your nose.
Probably the best tutorial I've seen for "quick and modern" (rather than DAS' traditional style). Very easy to follow and fun to watch! Oh, Austen, use Masking Magic strips to temporarily attach your spine to covers, it won't damage the boards. Or use masking tape but apply it to your clothing a few times first, takes the stick down a bit.
I'm so glad you enjoy my "quick and modern" approach. I definitely felt some imposter syndrome when I shared it, since I'm no DAS-style expert. I appreciate the tape tip too. These days I often use washi tape or drafter's tape to minimize the damage.
This would probably push the value of these books triple the original. Thank you so much.
Probably! Although it takes a long time to design the covers so I'm not sure how viable it would be as a business. Lots of fun as a hobby though!
Thank you, said and illustrated in 15 minutes what some people can't get across in a series of 25 videos of 30 minutes each🤓
Thanks! I was just trying to make the tutorial I wish I'd had when I started this hobby myself :)
For the last month i've been deep diving researching how to make/bind books so i can make them as gifts for my boyfriend. Especially after realizing how much leather books cost! I've almost gathered all my supplies and I will be starting shortly. Thanks for all your videos, it's helped me IMMENSLY.
I'm so excited to hear that! Good luck with your new hobby!
I am so convinced that I can do this so I'm absorbing all the knowledge I can, mostly with my Spanish books because for some reason, they are worth a week salary, so I'm all for the diy's
Good luck! It can be extra hard to find the leatherbound editions for books in Spanish.
You are excellent at explaining steps, measurements, materials, and the reasoning behind your choices. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your generous words! I'll do my best to keep doing that in future videos.
Why am I JUST now discovering your channel?! I was entranced. Bravo sir.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you found the channel too!
If I had the ability to give you a million dollars for this video series, I would. Thank you sooooo much.
They say it's the thought that counts! I feel richer already!
Glorious. I feel like I should have paid for this concise lesson. Thank you, from a fellow C.S. Lewis fan.
Glad to hear you're a fellow fan!
You can’t imagine how much I appreciate you sharing this!!!!! Thanks so so much!
My pleasure! I'm so glad you found it helpful.
I honestly thought this would have been a much more extensive process. Planning on rebinding the full Harry Potter collection, wish me luck 👍🏼
Nice! I did Harry Potter earlier this year myself! Hope you'll check out the video for inspiration.
This guy is bloody great
Thank you so much!
Beautiful work, and demonstrated succinctly. Thank you.
Amazing!!! Thank you.. Excellent tutorial, I agree so clear and comprehensive without overwhelming!!! Can't wait to make my own. For years I have been looking forward to learning this method.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it and the tutorial could make this hobby feel approachable. Go forth and conquer!
Amazing! :D I'd actually like to know more about the cover design process. How did you make those patterns? I'm gonna make myself a book press in the new year, So would love a video on that too. :D Great work and love the humour and well thought out instructions. I like how you explain the "Why", and not just "do this!" Thanks man :D
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who laughs at my dumb jokes! I'll be pretty wrapped up in my professional life for the next month or two, but I'll make those videos as soon as I'm free!
@@ingeniusdesigns Excellent! No rush man! :D Have a good christmas! :D
@@ingeniusdesigns I’m certainly looking forward to that. The books behind you look amazing.
+1000 to what the others said. Great video and explanation of your process. HTV wasn’t on my radar for the next project but now it is. With your other projects (yes, we ALL noticed the shelf behind you) have you tried embossing? Embossing with the HTV technique? When you get time, would love to watch a video on your cover design process. Thanks for a very instructive and fun presentation.
Where do you get your leather from? The Tandy leather by me rarely has anything light enough to use for bookbinding and when they do it’s expensive as hell.
😲😲 Its amazing and beautiful😍😍😍
Thank you so much. I hope you can make something amazing and beautiful yourself!
Yess please make more videos on bookbinding!!! Your work is amazing and I enjoy learning from you!
Thanks so much! I have a bunch more videos on the channel and more are coming slowly but surely!
This tutorial is SO clear and comprehensive without being overwhelming. Thank you so much. About to embark on rebinding my own books and you've given me so much confidence!
Thank you so much for the awesome feedback. Good luck with your new hobby. There can be a learning curve, but it will be really rewarding if you stick with it.
I had no idea this is how it all worked. So much detail it’s amazing! I will try this soon .
Greta tutorial. I would love to see how to make a book press!
Maybe this tutorial of mine can help?

Well done. A bagua man went looking for book advice, he found an Airbender enthusiast expounding the Way. Gracias.
You, sir, have a way with words. Your comment reads like a poem :) Thanks so much!
You are quite nerdy and I mean that in the best possible way (as a total nerd myself). Keep up the amazing work, old boy. Quite good.
You've given me a whole bunch of ideas for some very old books that I'd love to restore to a glorious state. Thanks again.
Awesome! I hope they turn out every bit as glorious as you imagine!
I came looking for a video like this because I was so sad that the leather bound chronicles of Narnia is extremely rare and mega expensive. I’m so glad to see that there are others that had the same thoughts as me🙂
Oh wow! I guess I hit the nail on the head with my book selection! Hope your Narnia books turn out just the way you imagine them like mine did for me :)
Your videos are so easy to understand. Thank you!
Glad you like them!
Ok I watched the video and Sir you're officially a genius in my eyes! The cardboard tube as a spine? Genius! The self made press? Um Genius! (Qould love to see a tutorial) And last but not least, and most GENIUS thing...the vinyl for making decorations?! Ok I am mindblowed now. I watched few tutorials on bookbinding and I was sad because the tools for the decoration/lettering stuff are sooo expensive and not easily accessible in my country. So I was ready to just make easy leather cover with no design on it....but now? I can do even more ideas and in an easier way (traditional way seems to be pretty hard and for sure needs a looot of practice before no errors will appear 😆) and the fact that I already own the cricket machine 😌 you just made my day! Thank you so much for your work and once again - it's a pleasure to watch you, you're a naturally born teacher and I love your aura. Can't wait to make my first book after Christmas and can't wait for a new videos from you. Have a great day!
Thanks so much for your kind words. I love to do things the traditional way, but I've been really happy with the quality of results I can get from vinyl. The guests at my house can't tell the difference! I'm so glad that my little trick makes you feel like you can do it; that's exactly why I wanted to share.
@@ingeniusdesigns i would love to try the traditional way in the future too, because it's a beautiful craft, but for me as a person who never tried it before, the vinyl technique seems so much more beginner friendly 😊
I have been binge-watching all the bookbinding videos I can find to get ready to dive into doing it myself, and this is hands down my favorite so far! Love your humor and communication style, and the instruction is super clear and straightforward, easy to understand and makes me actually feel for the first time like maybe I really can do this. Thank you so much for making these, looking forward to your future videos!! Definitely interested in learning more about how you design the covers on Illustrator and how you made that book press. Also, huge fan of the choice of C.S. Lewis :)
Thanks so much! I really appreciate all the positive feedback and I'm so glad that my videos worked for you. I've binged watched on the topic a lot too, and I know there's some great stuff out there, which makes your kind words all the more meaningful. If you have any specific questions as you get started feel free to let me know!
Totally agree. Also he's entertaining which helps me absorb the information without my mind wandering.
Please please make a video on how to do the cover art! your first two are amazing and very well produced!
Also where do you buy your leather?
And the book press, how did you make that?
I'm working on that video right now! Thanks so much for your kind support.
Coming soon!
Mainly from Ebay, actually!
What a great idea to use htv for the foil!!!
Thanks! It certainly does make the hobby a lot less intimidating to start!
Thank you for this! I was wondering how leather bookbinding differed from the cloth bookbinding I usually do and this answered my questions perfectly!
Since I didn't touch on cloth binding at all, I'm so glad my video happened to have the info you needed! I hope you give it a try!
@@ingeniusdesigns I definitely will (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*.✧ I'm planning on making a pair of matching leather journals for my best friend and me and I'm super excited to start!
Awesome! I bet she'll love them! It shall be the sisterhood of the traveling books!
This is such a great video! Even when most of the contents now are digital, still nothing beats the feel and texture of reading and holding an actual physical book. Most specialy like this leather and gold gilded ones! Thank you for such a satisfying and very detailed diy tutorial!
Thanks so much! I totally agree. Most of my "reading" is audiobooks these days, but even when I find a book I love by audio I still like to buy a physical copy and add it to my collection.
I'd love to know how to take a digital book and print it out to make a leatherbound so that I can get the size of the book to match the professional leatherbounds in my collection... or how to do this from a more tradional printed copy. I love the look and feel of the leatherbounds so much more than standard books.
Why though? A fake cover on a trash book?
@Lucy-jf8ts what makes it a "trash" book? The fact that it's got a digital copy? Many books have digital versions as well as audio book versions, including best-selling books.
Or is it that it's a traditionally printed copy but not a leather-bound edition that makes it "trash"? I see nothing wrong with making a custom version of a book for one's own collection.
@@HyruleBalverine You see nothing wrong with it, because you are on drugs.
this is so freaking helpful! I have some kinda really old books, where the cover falls apart from reading them a lot and not taking care of their age. like that, i can repair them!
Thanks so much! Please try it!
I am actually super impressed by this video. I've watched professional bookbinding videos but none ever have good voice over explaining things very very simply even I can understand lol. Immediately I can see 1 or 2 places I've gone wrong in my own books just from this simple tutorial! Thank you!!!
I started doing bookbinding videos because I went through the same thing as you and I wanted to make the kind of tutorial that I wish I had been able to find. I'm so glad my videos were able to do that for you!
Incredibly useful video! I'm so worried that I'll bind everything now
Ha! Good luck! It definitely gets addictive!
You make it look so easy!!
You are so good! Thank you for your excellent way of explaining and technical detail. Luv it!
So glad this worked for you. I hope you try it and I wish you luck!
Gah!! The little trinkets on the bookshelf are such an adorable touch!!! I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who dreamt of having a beautiful library full of leather - bound books when I was a kid.
Thanks! Organizing and reorganizing my shelves was a lot of fun as my collection grew!
Thanks so much for introducing me to a new hobby!! I have loads of cheap paperbacks that are beat up from years of use and this is a great way to breathe life back into them. I will say, based on my first time experience, a few things jumped out at me:
1. When you say thinner leather is better, you MEAN it. I used what I thought was very thin leather and it was extremely difficult to get pulled taut over the book. I'm still pleased with it for a first time attempt, but you weren't kidding about the need for a bit of stretchiness!
2. You don't need a book press but even having something simple like a bench mounted vice would be a lifesaver. I wrangled my way through using two C clamps and it was...less than fun.
3. I was very pleased with the results of the heat activated foil, BUT I had a huge problem: it glued all of the pages together completely to the point that I accidentally tore a couple of pages before giving up. Thankfully I was able to sand down all the foil to unstick the pages. Not sure if it was the brand of foil I was using or if I applied heat and pressure for too long, but my advice if the pages do stick would be to NOT force it and just get back out the sandpaper.
Overall it was a very satisfying project! I can't wait to try other materials too like using fancy paper instead of leather on the cover.
There's definitely a learning curve, but I'm glad you stuck with it despite some bumps in the road. Most heat transfer foils which are designed to have designs cut into them are far too thick and strong as you discovered. I have only had success with one specific brand of foil so far, but in the future I may do a comparison review to see if I can get any other brands to work. The leather you use definitely makes a difference too. I released a video on how to pick leather for your project recently so I hope that helps. Stick with it and I hope this becomes one of your favorite hobbies!
Yesss! The perfect thing to wake up to! Thanks so much for this!
So glad to hear I could spread a few smiles this Christmas season. Enjoy!
Wow. That looks really, really good!
Thank you so much! I hope you can make your own!
I am eager to build my own books and have _always_ preferred the leather and gold aesthetic. It just, makes sense. I have much to learn but am going through many videos including your videos. I want to create my own series of books and to showcase a final draft in these kinds of books (but the entire printing of the pages, to putting into the leather binding, is something I'm still figuring out. I also think silver would look better on different things and hope that works in much the same way. There is so much I need to get first but I know I want to do this.
Absolutely beautiful I can’t wait to get started. Thank you so much!
Both videos are spot on, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I appreciate the feedback. Hope you can try it yourself!
Well done. I'm glad to see the book cover tutorial video is up as well! Thank you!
You're welcome! The videos come slowly but surely, so keep checking back and hopefully I'll be covering more topics you're interested in.
My wife and I really enjoyed your videos and will be watching more of them as we begin our journey into this craft. Thank you for such entertaining and informative videos!
Thank you so much! Feel free to comment with questions if you have them as you get started. Good luck, I'm sure it will be a lot of fun for both of you!
This is golden!
Thanks so much!
This is absolutely fantastic! I've been thinking of recovering all of my 600+ Star Trek collection for the last few months, and this has been the vest video by far that explains/shows the process
Wow! I've only bound 60 or so books. By the time you finish 600 I think you should be the one making tutorials, not me!! Sure hope you try it!
That breaking glass sound scared the hell out of me XD You're so good at this tho. I bet I'd try it and it'll look like a toddler made it lol
Ha! So glad my jokes work for some people! You should totally try it yourself. My first book wasn't the best either, but it was still worth displaying and the project itself was lots of fun!
@@ingeniusdesigns I will need to try it definitely. Btw, do you have a link for where you got your Cricut Maker ?

Glad it worked out that way! Enjoy!
Thank you so much for this set of videos on bookbinding! I have been looking for a good tutorial for a couple of weeks and finally found yours... my search is now over- your videos are precisely what I was hoping to find. The information is complete without being tedious and I've already gotten started. (I was so excited to show my husband that paper could be sanded... never thought about that before...) Your results are so professional. Well done! Thank you for sharing your skills with us!

Thanks so much! Sharing the innovation of iron-on foil for page edges was really what inspired this series of videos in the first place, so I'm very happy to hear that it is appreciated. Good luck with your own rebinding projects!
I love your videos good sir! Very informative! I plan ok making my first book this month! I can't wait! Also!
Yes please make a video about the cover art 🫣

Hope that helps and good luck on your first book!
@ingeniusdesigns you can't threaten me with a good time lol, I appreciate the shout out! I've watched it! I'm going to run inkscape for now for vector images!
Thanks! I'll be sure to show it off! 🤤 📖 🤤
It feels like I have been waiting forever for this video. I am just getting started with bookbinding, and your last video has been one of the best I've seen so far. Nobody else does step by step.
Sorry for the long wait! It means a lot to me to know that people care. If you have any more questions let me know. If there's enough interest I might make more videos some time!
@@ingeniusdesigns I'm actually about to start a new project with my wife. I got a set of all of the nancy drew books (56 in total) and am going to start binding them in leather after Christmas. I'm pretty confident in the cover making, but I am probably going to try to put 3 books to a cover, which is something I've never done. Have you ever done something like this?
Excellent question. I actually haven't done this yet, but I plan to do almost exactly what your proposing with my next set of books. My plan is to put a single sheet of endpaper between each book and glue each book to the endpaper like normal. Because the books I have collected for that project are of different ages, the pages don't line up perfectly, so I plan to use my belt sander or a sharp chisel to level them off before I start my regular sanding process. I wish us both success on our parallel projects!
@@michaelmahaffey3953 Ah Nancy Drew. That takes me back. Good luck with the project.
Great project and presentation. Thanks!

Thank you so much for your kind words. I will do my best to keep helping as I can with future videos!
Almost finished with my first book project thanks to your videos that have guided me all the way. I've replayed them multiple times and they have been amazing! My project doesn't look quite as good as yours but I'm learning from my mistakes. If you could give a quick video on building the press used to press down the leather around the hubs I'd appreciate. Thanks again for these videos.
I'm so happy to hear that you're trying it! It's okay if things don't go perfect at first. There's a learning curve there. Looking at my first book compared to my most recent one is like night and day, but I'm just happy if I could give you a head start. I'm definitely planning a video on constructing that press. Life has been pretty busy for me lately, but I'll get it out as soon as I can!
You are amazing! Thank you so much for making this video. I'm having a online antique bookshop and i started to fix old books now i finally can get to the leather part.🤗
Wow! My techniques certainly aren't traditional, but I hope they will please your customers. I do find the pages of antique books to be more fragile (as I'm sure you know), so I have to be pretty careful when I'm working with them. Perhaps I could learn a thing or two from you!

Truly my pleasure. Hope it helps you start a new hobby!
This is perfect! I've been looking for a video just like this and have been wanting to bind a set of Narnia books for my bookshelf. Love that your examples are Narnia and C.S. Lewis books.
Sounds like you're a kindred spirit! Hope you can honor those amazing books with your talents!
Necessity being the mother of invention and all, when working on my latest project I realized that I was out of cardboard shipping tubes to use for the spine. So I tried an experiment of gluing multiple paper towel tubes together to get the right thickness and rigidity. This produced an unexpected benefit: since the paper towel tube is thin, I could lay it flat to get a precision cut and get the size exactly right (I've been having a tough time achieving that with a thick shipping tube). Plus, I go through a lot of paper towel on a given week, so the supply will always be there. I've been so happy with the results it might be my default going forward.
Nice thinking! I've used a laminated technique like that from time to time myself and liked the outcome. I also have a tutorial in my bookbinding hacks video on how to put a curve in flat boards. That may help you if you get in another pinch.
@@ingeniusdesigns That's a great tip about curving the flat boards! I'll give it a try next time. My next project is the Wolf Hall trilogy.
@@ingeniusdesigns you have made me a convert of putting the curve in the flat boards! What I love about it is that you can get a much more precise cut ahead of time. After experimenting with different sizes, I've found that a 4-inch PVC pipe provides the perfect curvature for the spine
I absolutely love your videos, and your work brother! Keep on keeping on!
Thanks so much! Your feedback is really motivating!
This is a wonderful!! I’ve enjoyed so much your last video and this is one is the perfect final! Thank you so much for sharing your talents and explaining step by step. 😉

Superb. I enjoy your process. Am ready to give it a shot myself. Thank you.
That is exactly the outcome I want most from my videos! So glad you feel ready to try it. Good luck and feel free to comment again if you need any tips.
Great tutorial!
Thanks so much!
Wow great video and results!
Mister Austin, these are great videos, thank you! I love how very accessible you make these to everyone! You use a hand made book press (for clamping and pressing stuff together after glueing) ... but I do NOT see a video for this! @4:41 Tell me where I've gone wrong in my search, please!
I see that you've already found my tutorial for the finishing press, but the other "hand made book press" that you referenced is really so simple that I didn't think it merited a video. It's just a couple of pieces of cardboard and a couple of large C-clamps from a hardware store. I put the book between the boards and use the clamps to apply pressure. Simple as that!
this tutorial is very helpful!
his was fantastic! Thank you!
You're very welcome! Happy to help.
