- Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell predicts which three new teams could join the NRL.
Mr Clennell’s remarks come after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape into Parliament House, where the PM mentioned the possibility of a PNG team “very deliberately”.
“Clearly he believes it’s happening,” Mr Clennell said.
“I’ve asked around - they’re looking at three new teams in the NRL.
“If you have three in as opposed to two in, you wouldn’t need the bye.
“So PNG, North Sydney, maybe another one in Queensland - I think they should have a WA team.”
There wont be another Sydney based team. Half the Sydney teams are struggling as it is with membership and sponsors
Rubbish. All clubs are profitable on football operations alone. And most backed by rich Leagues Clubs.
Bring back the Bears and Newtown Jets.
it isn't realistic. most of the sydney clubs are in precarious financial situations and two more would only make it worse.

I have friends that used to play in the Western Reds. It really wasn’t that long ago that we had a team.

Having a PNG team based in cairns is the nrl telling the people of cairns that they dont deserve their own team, i think it should be a central Queensland team, a second new Zealand team in the south island, and then a team from either Adelaide or Perth

Yeah I don't think Labor quite understand how on the nose they are in North Queensland. And I fail to see how a PNG based football team would change that significantly.
As much as I like Andrew Clennell, that’s not news, the NRL has already said there will be 3 teams added to the competition by 2030.
The hot tip, though, for the 18th team is Perth Bears, and either 19th or 20th team is expected to be a second NZ team.
The PNG team probably will happen due to the bribery of that idiot Albanese, but it shouldn’t happen. Fiji would be a good option to add a third country.
