I’m in that crowd as a 16 year old boy….somewhere. I’d forgotten just how many were in the town centre for the carnival. So sad to see how it is today, it’s soulless. Good memories and so nice to see.
I was 13 at the time of this video. Can't understand why none of my family is sat on my grandparents wall watching the carnival. It just doesn't make sense, we always went there to watch it. Really odd. Strangers are sat on my grandparents wall instead.
Great to see all the old shops & pubs again just like how I remember. Was funny seeing the different styles of the cars/buses/bicycles/pushchairs & clothing fashions again that were 'trendy' at that time too! Really enjoyed watching this- thankyou for sharing 🙂
Thanks for watching and commenting, I'm going to try digitising it again as the quality isn't great. Also this is an edited highlights copy, the original video is quite long.
When Crewe was a real town, west Street was a proper clean street full of colour and flowers the council over the years should be bloody ashamed of what we've become!
My family moved to this area sometime in 1988 (got a feeling it was in the autumn though). We initially lived in Coppenhall and then Haslington. Interesting to see what Crewe Town Centre looked like back then.
It looks so nice there and happy and back how England cheshire used to be I was born in 97 so unfortunately I didn’t see crewe this way but I wish I did !! The community is so much nicer
Crewe’s town centre was thriving then! Years of labour council mismanagement and corruption, even just a basic failure to respect any aesthetic at all. The civic centre built in the 1969s May have been modern but it was a high quality build with architectural integrity. At some point in the 90s they had to replace the windows on the police station, what genius decided on white pvc? The coherence of the centre was lost (the buildings all had black frames). This epitomises the thoughtless stupidity of the council. Building a new precinct of ships a half mile from the twin centre might have been a good idea, but they are just sheds around a car park. It killed the old town centre, no plans made on what to do with the space which is now a wasteland. Even a moments thought could have improved the new shipping area, e.g put the card behind the shops and pedestrianise the space between for cafes etc? But there has never been a modicum if common sense. The new sports centre is a monolith that splits the town in half and has no parking! But guess what? Crewe residents voted the same labour losers in decade after decade. It remains to be seen whether recent shift to the Tories will last and or whether they will make a difference. Cheshire East council is a national disgrace.
This clip on UA-cam is a shortened version of the complete video that was taken by me. However most of it was taken whilst sitting at the back of the float during the parade, with some extra footage of the preparations. I didn't take any from a fixed position as the parade went by.
@@abslad1946 You caught a brief glimpse of my Grandad/Gran (Gran died 1980) then Grandad & Nana's house before you switched sides to the now long gone wall. We used to sit on their wall and watch the carnival go past. However the people sitting on their wall in this video are none of my family which is really odd. Possibly one of the only years we didn't go. Typical. 😂
Hi John, my name is Jade Hickson and the reason I'm trying to get in touch is to see if you have any footage relating to my uncle who passed from suicide a few years ago. His name is David Hickson, he used to have a few businesses in Nantwich and was well known by a lot of people. He had the Cheshire Cat, the Lamb Hotel and Hickson Roofing, so if you have any footage of those areas could you please share or get in touch with me- I've tried to add you to Facebook but couldn't wait any longer to get in touch. Thanks john.
So sad that this was trashed by the council...everyone was so public spirited. Was great seein all the old shops like the fruitique and Dixon's lol and shops that are still around now like Massey's bike shop and the war monument in its true place. Dread t think what would happen now though if they tried to put it on again.
@ Crewe Ghost Adventures. If they did put the carnival on again, it would probably make a great many people very happy and feel like part of a community again. Though the state of the roads now would make it very unsafe for anyone to stand up on a lorry float with how deep some of the potholes are down West Street especially.
Omg my auntie Linda and Maureen who have now passed away bless them at the lion and swan with me cousins Kerry and Micky. 1988 I was nine so no doubt I was somewhere about being a little u know wot lol
I remember West street years ago when it was a nice street, shops such as Hulse's news agents, Partons hardware, Tommy Fletcher the barber, Knappers the butchers next to Chatwins, a fish shop on the corner of ford lane and a shoe shop on the other corner, Jenks fishing tackle shop etc. I can not for the life of me think why Crewe people continued to vote labour at every voting day and then moan like hell that nothing good was ever being done, it must be a Crewe thing!
Hi Craig, my son has lived in Sydney Australia for about 12 years now, I can't blame him. Back then Crewe was a nice place to live, even the westend, it used to be friendly and clean. Take it easy mate
@@deb7412 I do still have this video in its full form, maybe about 46 minutes long. also worth mentioning is that this version on UA-cam was one of my first attempts and to be fair it's not very good. The full version has be processed to get rid of those awful jaggies and made it a bit more smoother. If you can contact me on Messenger I can go into more detail.
This was when Crewe was a good place to live and not the complete shit hole it is now. Shame the carnival got scrapped due to all the drunken West Enders turning the fair into a battleground making it unsafe for families to go.
I was born in Crewe and lived in the west end for many years, the drunken idiots that you talk of didn't actually live in the area but were attracted to pubs along West Street. In the last few years of the carnival it did look like it had run its course, there was little effort put into the procession as I remember it.
@@ianskeldon6032 I’d have to disagree, many of times I’ve driven down West Street and seen fighting on a regular basis outside pubs like The Monkey etc it was a rough as down there and around Derby Docks.

Great memories, was 15yrs old back then, it’s great to see Crewe when it still had a soul, so very sad to see how different it is now in 2019.
Me too mate 😃
You can thank Tony Blair and Co. for that.
I am soooo v pleased to view this, as organised 15 Carnivals up year 2000, hard work and brilliant memories. x
