- So I've been a muppet and curbed a wheel on Ruby Roadster ! Perhaps one of my biggest hates in life...I do anything to avoid wheel damage.
I needed it to be fixed so I thought I'd do a film of the process and it turned out to be quite interesting !

Did mine myself £1.50 for a bottle of black nail varnish from asda, perfect match.
When you scratch your stuff, and you find a vid showing you’re not the only one and that there is a chance for hope......sweet!
Absolutely fixable. The wheel still looks as good as new :-)

Curbing wheels is my biggest pet hate. I have done it only once since learning to drive back in 1983, I said never again and I meant it. My gorgeous wife on the other hand used to need telling on a regular basis. Since having her new car, which is now two and a half years old, she hasn't done it once. I am very proud of her.
That's impressive, you should see the wheels on Mrs PPs S4 ;-)

I love black wheels on Mini Roadsters was thinking about getting mine powder coated in black then gloss finished, but this is the one reason that puts me off the dreaded kerbing, OUCHHH!!!! that guy did an ace job(sorry about the pun!), interesting video Peter glad to see Ruby Roadster is now back in fine fettle.
I'm a big black wheel fan too but as they say...you can always fix it ! When I saw this car at Mini it had sliver wheels but I got them to make them black before I picked it up. They were sprayed but they did a great job and look like powder coating !

No complaints about the video though, always find it fascinating to see guys like this at work. You can always pick up a few ideas.

U not the only one mate I just scuffed my alloy wheel today it's pretty minor damage in two places but I don't think I'll be able to do diy job on it pretty annoyed with myself it could have been avoided so stupid never mind

Was about to pay to have this done myself.. also have another wheel with lacquer peeling off.. but just found a man with two new wheels with good tyres which once this lockdown In the uk has been lifted I will go and pick them up.. £200 the pair.. well happy...
Did it three times now and some are bad.. car is only few months old. Watching this to help me.

Just kerbed my FK8 alloy! Thankfully red stripe is ok but similar area to yours. May try myself

You feel the car bump the kerb, walk around to check the tyre is OK, Yep it's fine then you spot the chunks missing from the alloy 😠
Ouch!! Ive taken the paint off a third of my spokes :( needs a full re spray... guess it gives me a reason to get all of my wheels painted black!! not cheap
It was a really good job only thing I would have done different was just paint the whole wheel but still awesome job

Those are PVD onyx chrome wheels. Wondering if you fixed it with same standards as PVD?
How much did the rim work cost you? In U.S. equitant?
The refinish is top notch, but I'd have concerns as to whether the over spray on the rest of the rim would peal over time. Especially if you live in colder climates.
I had the repair done best part of 12 months ago and there is no peal yet and it still looks perfect :-)
Great to hear. I live in Canada and it can get below minus 30 in the winter along with the road De icer. But given how much my wife likes curbing her accord coup I think I'll give it a try.......thks
not a great job..he should have filled it..then sanded it! not removing more aluminium...!

Petrol Ped He’s not wrong though, You can tell by the reflection lines how much he took out. I could tell from the video just by looking. He ate a chunk of that wheel. It looks great but there’s a difference between a great looking job and a great job
It all depends on how much you want to spend, if it’s a lease, as long as it looks repaired and it lasts, if it’s an expensive wheel or just a car that means a lot to you, I guess it’s worth doing right.
Filling it on an uneven surface ? You always buff it first so it's flat and smooth to fill it in
I thought the same. Where was the bondo filler with Aluminium. Then maybe it wasn’t that bad (deep) and the primer had filler in. The alloy looked amazing. Great job.
How long was the entire process?
I did the exact same thing to the shiny black alloy of the new Mini Cooper s. Just had the same treatment. I couldn't even look at the wheel until it had been repaired 🤦♀️

Kerbed both my forged alloys on my GR Yaris now I really feel bad since them wheels are expensive. Better change my rims after I get them refurbished hoping the wheel place can match the Black chrome finish.

How did he not get overspray on the rest of the wheel, or did he?
Hmm when they file it down, don't you end up with a mishaped wheel. He leaves the tyre on the whole time too? Doesn't all that metal shavings end up inside the wheel, bit risky?

My wife drives a mustang Performance pack with black wheels and the easy way to fix curb rash for me is Buy a gallon of roast oleum and just paint over the curb rash

Was it easy to match the black paint or did you know the paint code for your wheels?
He could match any colour onsite. He had a program that gave him the mix.

+daveybaby10 Not a fan of Carfest. The next big event will be Goodwood Revival but I have some nice breakfast meets including Wake up Wilton on 24 July and I'm going to that one in McLaren 650S Spyder 👍
I just did the same last week on my Luna Lovinjoy... I am very particular about keeping her in top shape.... Am sick....but that looks like a great job.. How long did the job take in all,
A couple of hours. Don't worry about your baby, you can get it sorted so it's looks as good as new 👍

Hate curbs, an unnecessary piece of road furniture! Looked a nice job ,but does the chamfer show when the light catches it?

FAO that’s probably because they’re going to remachine the wheel, you can get this similar job for a lot less in the U.S. usually under $100.
Yeah informative , I’ve the very same wheels on my Mini Cooper s and I’ve curbed one today trying to avoid a collision with another car his fault but he sped off 🙄 so I don’t have these tools but I know now how it’s done and the price is decent £60 6/8 hours work

Can anyone help me out and confirm whether or not those wheels would originally be powder coated? Or just painted?
Do you mean from the manufacturer ? These wheels where originally silver (more than likely powder coated) but then sprayed black by the dealer when I bought the car.
Petrol Ped yeah I was just wondering if those wheels would of had a powder coat on them during the time of the repair. I'm looking to repair my own wheels and I'm assuming they are powder coated too, and I'm just trying to confirm if it's possible to refurb and paint over a powder coat (just like in this video)

I just borrowed my aging dad my 3 month old mini last night. Today I have two knackered wheels. How the hell did he hit both sides of the kerb 😂
He bounced off of course,( heard the sound steered hard the other direction, hit the other side is more likely however as our response to something unpleasant is to move away in the other direction, frequently before we can think the consequences through)

I went from driving a 1995 f150 with a 6 inch lift to driving a 2020 Mazda 3 and just curved my wheel... I’m so sick ...🤢 i planned on getting new wheels anyway but still... damn 😪

I'm in houston. I bout some black Ferrara wheels for my m3. Got them at rollos off Richmond ave. curved one a month later leaving strip club. 😡😡. Rollos fixed it for $150. Black and new again Good luck

Never even knew what curbing a wheel was until video with your wife....so buy OZ wheel (first time to buy nice wheels too) and two weeks later I don't see a curb on the passenger side at pharmacy drive thru....rim & 3 spokes scraped....honest to Pete, I could cry....how can a person drive for more years than I want to think about & then curb the first set of new wheels ?? so can you fix the rim & the spoke or is it cheaper to purchase a new wheel? (about 5 inches of scuff on rim, about 1-2 inches on 3 spokes)

He could have used a dark primer. Much easier to cover with the black paint....Arnt I picky....lol

It looks like there is a slight depression where the curb rash used to be.
There is bound to be a little depression as the scuff was ground down. However, I could see where the mark is now. A great job :-)

+Ian Cross £60 and the results are great. The last time I had wheels done I had all 4 done and got them powder coated.

But you just ground it down? so the dimensions are off. its barely noticeable but not really fixed
Kerbing wheels is not a new phenomena at all,, but these days wheels and tyre design are such, that you do a lot more damage,, this is of course deliberate as like most related industries, the motor trade see motorists as cash cow,, as it is all about taking as much cash out of our pockets as possible!! And of course "tackle tarts" are the most gullible targets!! :-" I will just degrease the wheel",,, then he rubs his bare finger over it!! Furthermore,, after taking an amount of material "Alloy" away by sanding etc.. the wheel should have bee re balanced!!
