I have a special place in my heart for these old beige box Macs. Not only are they iconic, they're the first ever computer I ever touched. This was in the early 2000's mind you but my uncle who owned one of these is a geek too so it works lol.
The Mac Slap: While facing the top handle with the monitor resting on a soft towel and the five screws removed, swing both cupped hands with equal opposing light slapping pressure to the middle of the Macs sides. Simultaneously roll both palms up at the moment of contact. Viola, the Mac is cracked. Yes, brutish force applied this way could have negative consequences. Just the right amount of pressure will amaze your friends. Practice the Mac Slap on your said friends to learn the right amount of force to apply. A shocked expression = you are doing it right. An immediate retaliatory punch to your face = you are doing it wrong.
Oh yes, I've slapped many a Mac! Although it seems (in my experience) these systems open easily, but the later models, like the Mac Classic, need a good slap!
These Macs look nice! Now you will have to have 3x live repair Mac streams, approx 6-8 hours each. You need to replace your permanent temporary table - the wobbling drives me nuts every time I see it :)
I had a Plus Upgraded 128K which was also doing the “flup flup flup” thing. Turns out all I needed was a new optoisolator chip. The screen wobbled when it booted up but it booted!
Very cool, nice to see they have interesting upgrades! Even though they didn’t immediately power up, at least the batteries haven’t caused serious damage. It’ll be cool to see the upgrades in action and just how much extra performance they add. Great video!
Cracking the CRT right after opening up my Mac SE was the first thing I did, after I brought it home brand new (SE was almost 2K DM at the time and I was a student). A friend of mine found a 68020 accelerator board that he gifted to me (Radius?). So I had to install it right away into the new machine and broke in the process. It's an awful noise to hear when the vacuum tube sucks air. I had to bring it to the Apple repair center that was fairly close by and they replaced the CRT for another 300 DM. Expensive Mac SE.
I believe the clip connecting to the CPU is known as a "Killy" (sp?) clip. I've heard of them but I've never actually laid eyes on one until now. Wow! Just wow!
I had to get into my old SE-30 back in the say so this video was fun to watch. Thanks and I hope to get to VCF next year as the $$$ is tight this year. I Hope VCF-South gets restarted next year as I'm in Florida and that would be easier to go to.
Discovered your channel via Action Retro and Luke Miani. Next on the list should be adding a top-down camera so we could see what you are doing while explaining what you are doing. Keep it going man.
Thanks! I use my phone as a second camera as needed, but sadly a good high quality camera isn’t in my budget currently. These tear down videos usually don’t let me get up and adjust the camera too much, as I’m a one man studio. However, I’ll try better to work with more angles.

Really surprised how so many 128k and 512k Macs were upgraded, rather than swapping them for Mac Pluses. Seems like the price of the upgrades were less than buying/trading in for a new computer. Then again, I really shouldn't underestimate the willingness of computer nerds to upgrade the unupgradable.

@@Toonrick12 The SE/30 does run at 16mhz, but it's a 68030 processor rather than a 68000. The 68000 has a 16 bit data bus and a 24 bit address bus, the 68030 data bus and address bus are both 32 bit.

For a period of time (before around 1989) it wasn’t uncommon for you to be able to buy logic boards or other parts (such as ROMs or chips) from Apple. However in an effort to stop unauthorized do-it-yourself Mac Clones, they restricted sales of these items later on. I wouldn’t be surprised if repair shops bought whole logic boards and sold the ROMs and other parts to people who needed them.
I am wondering, do you even know how to repair those macs? Besides disassembling, doesn't seem that you know how to do anything else or have any technical knowledge of the hardware components. You could improve your videos by actually repairing those machines from an expert colleague maybe and add that to your video. Also you could just google and provide info about the "strange" add-on card of the 2nd mac. I mean, you couldn't even give info about the total RAM capacity of this card by reading the labels....Your video quality is great but there is no informative content in it.
You clearly have only just stumbled upon Steve's channel or you live in a cave which prevents the reception of WiFi/cellular data. Steve is amazing and has been repairing machines for years with some epicly long live streams of him searching, identifying and fixing faults. Steve also has spent a lot of time doing research into specific areas of Macs - like the clones or helped other fellow vintage Mac fans fix up their machines. May I suggest you go and check out his back catalog and then perhaps think about editing your comment?
Did we watch the same video? This wasn't a deep dive... this was a 30 minute video featuring a general evaluation of the machines. There's also some great information about how to properly open a Mac Plus with a SCSI upgrade (since the cables can often get stuck).

Since this was just a quick overview of these machines, no he didn't go into and repair them right now. Maybe watch his livestreams or other videos where he goes into more detail.

Yes, plenty of repairs! Oh trust me, the wobbling isn't great for me either. But for now that's what I have, so I need to make do with it.

Yep! Sometimes it's the chip or sometimes it's the older capacitors. I'll be interested to see what's causing it on this model.

The original macintosh designs are very friendly and simple, I like it.

I had a Mac 128Ke one time. It had the Mac Plus ROMS and a new 800K floppy drive, but still had 128K. It would even boot from the HD20!

Yep! Killy was the group that manufactured the clip.

Yes, a recap should fix that up well! Another compact Mac I had was fixed up doing that.

The 68000 on the SuperMac board likely runs at 16mhz, vs the stock 8mhz

Where did people get the Mac Plus ROMs for upgrades? Did Apple sell them?
