Kue Lapis Legit is quite expensive due to the amount of eggs they use.. so we would have it during special festivies like Chinese New Year or Eidl Fitr celebration.. serve them or and give them as hampers to special people

When i was a kid, always eat it layer by layer to savor it longer. Now i can afford one, but i still slice it very thinly just because it taste the best for me
This is so different from a germany baumkuchen cake, but similar techniques are used to achieve the multi layers. The addition of the evaporated milk looks especially delicious. Is rum included? Spekkoek is the traditional name dating from 17th century Dutch colonial times. When the Dutch introduced butter and wheat flour. The Indo belandas invented this cake by adding Indonesian spice.
Spekkoek (kue lapis legit or spekuk in Indonesian) is a type of Indonesian layer cake. It was developed during colonial times in the Dutch East Indies. The firm-textured cake is an Indo (Dutch-Indonesian) version of the European multi-layered spit cake. However it is not baked on a rotating spit, and contains a mix of Indonesian spices, such as cardamom, cinnamon, clove, mace and anise. The cake is made of flour and yolk and is rich in butter or margarine.

Is kue lapis really really expensive in Singapore? In Indonesia you can find it with decent price. Or maybe because everything is expensive there comparing to indo?
I think it depends on how many eggs you put on. One of my relatives used to make this cake. She used 40 egg yolks for a cake. And also the patient you need to make the cake
We used to make this every hari raya. It's a whole day and night facing the oven. When the price of canned butter became too expensive, we stopped making it altogether
I frankly dont think a couple of layers more than a couple, say 5, has differences in taste with a 20 layer one. More for tradition than anything else IMO.
Yea i agree with you.. perhaps aesthetic but definitely not flavour.. that would come from the ingredients in the batter.. baked at the right temperature.
Tried making it a couple years back and I can say its no JOKE I ended up with some layers thick and some layers thin. Then by the time I finish the top layer the bottom layer is semi burnt and the bottom layers are so hard and dry :( I GIVE UP!
