Interesting video! I remember when I was back in school we got whipped emotionally using the word ain't. As a non-native English speaker I was amazed since you did hear the word in many films, video games and such. They did not bother to tell people that before writing an essay. In Finland they focus too much on the grammar to my money. In addition, merry X-mas to you all!

I had no idea how to research for a western story I'm currently writing, with my main inspiration being, of course, Red Dead, and I didn't want to use that as my main source of information. This channel makes it easy for me to get bite sized chunks that inspire me to look further into certain topics, and have gotten me to pay more attention to the little details in my story that I would've otherwise glossed over :)

Thank you for these awesome videos. My g-g-grandfather went to America as a young man. He left Ireland and wrote home saying he’s never met so many Irish people out of his own green isle. Same with our Scot cousins I believe. We have no idea of his exploits. He returned minus part of one ear and a chunk out of his jaw as well as some old photos we still have. Spent the rest of his days in Ireland. America it seems, was not for him. I’d have loved to have gone with and seen the sights..and probably die though

It’s helped with living history though as you kind of have a vague idea of what ranch life may have felt like. We still have his watch - it’s rather fun because it’s a patent lever watch itself but the case is silver from Birmingham. Thanks again for these videos, they’re really fun to watch and very informative.

As a Texan, I can confirm that we do have accents! I found this channel a bit ago and have enjoyed it since then! I haven't seen alot of videos on it.
Thanks! There was no standard "uniform" for hired guns. I did one on Dressing....the Outlaw, which covered a lot of gunmen. NOW, I may do one on Hollywood versions of them.

The foundations of American slang were laid early on, predating even the rise of the jive talk introduced by the jazz culture of New Orleans, which was an early, but not primary, contribution. The California Gold Rush era gave rise to, or pushed forward and solidified, many colloquialisms that persist today. It is surprising how common and familiar many of them are. The Roughing It chapter "Buck Fanshaw's Funeral" is a treasure trove of them. Today, additional layers are accruing that have emerged from geek speak and hip hop. We might hope that those contributions will lack the longevity of adoptions made during earlier periods of American history.

You may have, depending on where you ended up. Out West was pretty tough. We Scot/Irish are a tough breed, so I bet you'd have made it.
