As a former Olympian and Silver Medalist for Jamaica 1984. There was only grass roots family and alumni support. I was fortunate my sr yr at Jago Western Sports sponsored me with sport gear, shoes and sport wear. No funding money wise to further my development to stay in Jamaica and develop which is why I took a scholarship to USA college. But that didn't help improve my performances, the coaches there at college at least mine was no good. I felt if I had the funding and sponsorship to stay in Jamaica I would have been better. Respect to Glen Mills, and Steven Francis as well as other up and coming coaches. We need more guidance for the high schoolers as they transition from high school to senior level.

Much love to Glen Mill from his first year at Camperdown we could feel his greatness. Starting with Leroy such a diamond in rough and then the great Raymond S. We had the soccer and he came with the tracks. Thanks Mr Mills you and Francis makes Jamaica very, very proud. I am sure there are many more our hats goes off to them all.

We can yield better results if we transition better from the junior to senior level. High school coaches must take an athlete versus a school approach for champs. Clearly some schools are more focused on winning champs than the future of their athletes. Support is needed at the grassroots level. Lack of infrastructure, proper nutrition, basic gears, to name a few has been a sore point for most institutions. I hope we don’t take things for granted like West Indies Cricket. We’re in a competitive landscape and other countries have been researching our system and methods to determine why we’re dominating. Enough said! 🇯🇲🇯🇲

I'm no Track and Field expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I've always held the opinion that Jamaican high school athletes are overworked. They train too hard and do too much too early, especially when their school is a CHAMPS contender. I'm glad Mr Mills at least touched on it here.

Both Mills and Francis have several coaches who work in the camps and whom they mentor. That has always been the case. For example, Shelly's current coach was once a coach at MVP. One of Yohan's former coaches was a former coach at Racers. Also, remember that Paul Francis, who works under the umbrella of MVP, is also a great coach.

I have made this point many times before, not the way Glen Mills did however, I'm not a coach but I could see the overworked of many of our talented athlete in the past. What I saw was, if a young athlete were good, either the coach or the school; give them more work to do. I believe the Government need to hire someone who is good at spotting potential young talent. This person would go around to the various schools throughout the year, talk with the coaches about who they think is the next talent, but also observed other young athlete within the groping. Once a talent is identified, they should be taken out of that athletic system to another system, this could maybe at one of the clubs in Jamaica, or at JC Foster College, which ever way they do it, these talented youngster need to be nurtured along to the senior years. I have written post about it, Glen Mills have spoken about this 10 Years ago; and we're still going along the same path in 2021. These athlete should not run more than 2 event at Champs, Carifta, or Penn Relays...Make the changes people.

As a St Jago alumni my fav athlete after Yohan Blake at Champs is Jevaughn Matheson of KC. I deeply regret what has happened to this young man's potential as an athlete due to what appears to be negligence on the part of his coaches while in high school. This kid had beautiful form and had a bright future ahead but was destroyed by poor decision making by those in charge of his career. Glen Mills commented on Matheson's talent in a few interviews while lamenting what was done to the youngster by his coaches.
