Some cool early modchips i recall:
1. neo2.2. Simple and quite limited early chip, could boot ps1 backups directly and ps2 backups using a swaptrick and a gameshark disc.
2. The Origa chip, more complex than a neo2 but still rather simple. Could boot ps2 cdr and dvd backups using a swap trick + originals from other regions directly.
3. Neo 4. First chip which could boot cd and dvd backups without using a swaptrick. It did not direct boot however, you needed to launch the games from the ps2 menu iirc.
The neo4 could be combined with an origa chip to make it region free as well. This chip requried a ton of wires to install and there are some fun pics online of ps2s with both of these chips installed.
5. The Messiah, the first "no swap" chip which could do it all. This chip booted backups and originals on any media. I have a vague memory of it not being able to handle dual layer dvds. Perhaps the was fixed with the messiah 2.
I had something called a smartchip, or some clone of it. I think it was a rather popular budget model at the time (cheap and stable)
Anyway, nice video which brought me back. I was really interested in these chips and read a ton about them when i was a kid.
this is exellent info, i love this, i'm pinning this i hope everyone reads it, i'm glad to have taken you for a stroll down memory lane
@@RETROGAMINGARTS glad you found it interesting :) I noticed a couple of errors in there and did a little bit of digging around. Heres a corrected post (can't edit anymore).
1. neo2.2. Simple and quite limited early chip, could boot ps1 backups directly and ps2 backups using a gameshark disc. I think this chip just stopped and ejected the the game discs
2. Sbox/neokey - Weird one which plugged into the front usb port. Still required soldering a couple of wires and provided similar functionality to the neo2.
3. The Origa chip, more complex (8 wires) than a neo2 but still rather simple. Could boot ps2 cdr and dvd backups using a swap trick + originals from other regions directly.
4. Neo 4. Could direct boot ps1 and ps2 cdr games. Booted ps2 dvd titles using another game as a swap disc. It also removed the dvd (movie) region protection
Installing this chip involved removing components from the board and 44 wires, its likely the most complicated chip to install. If you combined this with an origa chip, burned dvd discs would boot without a swap disc. There are some fun pics online of ps2s with both of these chips installed, .
5. The Messiah, the first true "no swap" chip. This chip booted backups and originals on any media. I think it was fairly quickly replaced with the messiah 2 which made the dvd movieplayer region free as well.
I also found this page which contained some info on these chips: redwinters.tripod.com/html/info.htm
hey can i ask you about messiah 2 i have KTMB05 ACTEL MS2 where can i find more info abaut the mod chip i want to install it in ps2 slim 70000x
This is insane, dude! I'd personally love to see a no-solder installation of the DMS4 Pro EZ solution, as well as some more detail on the Wii and Xbox 360 chips you showed!
I can do that Install super quick. And then I can remove it and do a soldered version. all in the same video. Who's making dms4 I stall videos in 2019. Like.. WHAT!?!? CONGRATS ON 100K !
mr mario i have a ps2 slim and every time i start my ps2 its says sumo lite
I have 2 Japanese fat PS2s with the DMS4 Pro EZ chips.
As I remember it was a pretty easy install.
39 years old. ive been into modding since the psX as a way tomake side money. i memorized all the solder points for the different boards, and could just do it from memory. its really amazing to see all these chips i remember coming out, and not being able to afford a ton of them. thanks for a trip down memory lane for me. recently got back into 360 modding, and got help along the way to help with all the problematic versions of software to work with current os's, again thanks man. i feel like its 2002 again!
Great collection! there are 3 chips you need to have in your collection, "Thunder", "Thunder Pro 2", "Thunder Pro 2 Gold Edition" ... They are rare mod-chips from a Brazilian company called VTEC ... The PS2 was very successful in Brazil, and much of this success was thanks to mod-chips and the possibility of running backups games, (the gaming market in Brazil was always very expensive, for comparison purposes only, a Brazilian worker in 2003 and 2004 earned the equivalent of 600 and a genuine PS2 game cost 200) Then the mod -chips were not only important, but essential tool for selling consoles in our country. And the competition was between the Matrix (at that time there were only originals) and the Thunder, which was a cheaper alternative.
Is it sponsored by honda?
@@ath_ala8078 No. xD
Eu tenho um thunder pro 2 muito lindo aqui em casa o melhor desbloqueio na minha opinião
My PS2 had the Thunder modchip, it was great. A friend had the Messiah and he always had some issues.
Até this time, the worst here in Brazil was Magic 3, the red one V1V7.
Good times
I had the oroginal Messiah, upgraded to Dms4 pro and when it died on me suddenly, I got myself a matrix infinity.. And this was 15 years ago
Always a pleasure to learn more about modding. Thanks for all your hard work!
Sir, you are a man of culture!
That background music:
-Comix Zone Stage 1,
-NIER OST - The Wretched Automatons and Kainé Salvation...
YES!!!! YES!! hahahah. I love you picked up on these! Thank you for having similar taste to me lolol
Thank you for this video. Also really appreciate the NieR music, I was so happy to hear it
Awesome! Definitely way more ps2 modchips available than I ever realized, pretty neat to have some background information to go with them as well. Thanks!!!
i'm really happen you enjoyed, i can really really go on and on, i actually remade this video because the first time it was so long and i talked for like 44 minutes LOL
@@RETROGAMINGARTS haha that reminds me BONUS VIDEOS RULE!! :D :D
Thanks for this video! I modded PS2s when the original Messiah came out that only worked on 35001 models (GT3 pack). Great collection of modchips you have there!
Talk about nostalgia! I remember purchasing a PS ONE modchip from a random EU site that was recommended to me from a gamestop employee. Years later I went to the same site to buy a DUO2 chip for the PS2 (I didn't even know the difference, I just liked how the DUO 2 chip looked). Kinda wish I still had both of the systems just to take the chips out! Thank you for posting this video.
I don’t know why but this is so satisfying to watch!
Because you dont get to see it to often. thank you so much for enjoying!!
That was a great video! You are quite a master of the mod. Very impressive to say the least. I bet doing one of your mods is incredibly relaxing and equally rewarding to see it come back to life, not to mention all of beautiful wire management to look at afterward. So how's the new job going?
You're collection of Ps2 modchips is insane! Where do you get those Mars Pro chips? I would love to try one out
God, this brings back so many memories. I looking at pictures of modchips and installs. Remember the mushroom modchip? I always thought that looked sick as hell and always wanted one.
I still got my DMS4 Pro. Love the Toxic OS. Great collection man !
This was pretty cool sir, history preserved
Brings back so many memories. I have personally installed hundreds of Magic III chips mainly on V7 motherboards that was the most recent motherboard supported by that chip, no V9-V10 or slims. The Magic chips have a very clean boot logo "Playstation 2". Magic team released the Magic 50K that supports V9-V10 boards but never released any chips for the Slim. I have also installed thousands on Modbos 750-v3.5-v4.0... they were fairly cheap back in the day compared to the Actel based Infinity.
My man, I'm so happy you stumbled across this video then. I'm happy to have hit you with the ps2 modding nostalgia
Neat collection and thanks for the info
Thanks yo, I donno why, but this is soo interesting to me lolol
Awesome indeed
The comix zone background tracks A+
I'm so happy you noticed !
Very glad to learn about all of them.
Can you please also show how each of them boots on the ps2?
That will be awesome
Hey, love your channel. I'm quite pumped to try chipping my PS2 soon.
I'm looking to install the Mars Pro gm-816hd chip (as you mentioned its very reliable). I wanted further info about laser protection as I have the more vulnerable PS2 slim SCPH-7000x model ("V12").
I've heard the Matrix PIC fix chips are handy for laser protection, but wanted to know if there's any compatibility issues. Will the Mars Pro chip work properly alongside the Matrix PIC fix chip? I've seen people recommend using the PIC fix alongside Modbo chips; but am struggling for info regarding the Mars Pro.
I have a NEO 4 mod chip laying around somewhere. It was the first no swap mod chip for the PS2, except for DVD-+R disc.
I still have my PS2 with the DMS 4 ez with toxic os still works great...Never had a problem ...when I installed it I hot glued the EZ parts ...It also came with another board with lights on it to let you know all the contacts are touching the chips..Also had crystal and a matrix....seeing all of those chips really brings it back..come to think of it if I dig I might still have some of the chips files...
Any chips u might have laying around u could spare bro xD ?
V9 consoles had both the HD7 and 400c , thats not a protection fix its a full replacement for the LA6508, in the beginning no one could source them so that was used as a replacement, the LA6508 would often kill itself and take the laser coils with it, the 5V fixed mitigated it a lot.
Cant say I had good experiences with the Mars Pro, it had hit and miss boot rate. The exception was SCPH-9xxxx (V18) where it had a 100% hit rate and the back latest version of the chip had the (BGCHJI) points on the back meaning if you overhang the chip you can do a very neat install.
Duo 3 was one of the better ones to use in terms of boot rate on phat systems, the other slims IIRC for a budget option we were using Modbo 760 , they were okay but not great, and we only used more expensive Matrix Infinities on the SCPH-70xxx.
Just my experience with them I know a lot of installers opinions differed.
Great vid dude! I installed matrix long time ago. I found an old ps2 fat with apple pro, do you know how to load backups?
Firstly nice collection of modchips 👍
I have a Modbo 760 and recently acquired a Mega 7 chip which is installed in a PS2 SCPH-90004.
I have absolutely no clue about the Mega 7, but it's apparently similar to the Super 7 e17?
I am trying to find usage modes on the Mega 7, but I can't seem to be able find anything with regards to ps1, ps2, on/off modes or how to enter any menus etc.
I originally modded my v4 ps2 with a Messiah..then wanting the Toxis OS and the Hard Drive support, I upgraded to a DMS4 pro... A year after that, that DMS4 Pro suddenly died on me thus having me to upgrade to a Matrix Infinity. It's alive and kicking until now. During those days, Dave Bere is an Internet celebrity with his super clean installs. Wonder where the guy is now...
Any new chips added to your collection? If so, i'm waiting for an update video :D
You are the reason my ps2 modchip collection exists. Thank you for that :D I love this shit
I found you. And im glad you found me. You got the exact ones from this video now.
This is amazing haha.
I hope that this doesn't mean that you are done with Ps2 modchips though!
Much love from Greece

I still use a PS2 system with O2 modchip installed (by myself on approx 2005). It's a really nice modchip, with internal memory, where you can install any elf file (uLaunchelf in my case).
DOPE! that's so sick you still have it. I hear its HDD support is amazing
Amazing!Do you know nova chip? It's a first mod that a know here in Brazil.Maybe you can help me, I compressed my save on the memory card directly on the ps2 but I don't remember what the disc did that and now I wanted to unzip it and I can't. Do you remember which disc did this?
Very helpful ty for the info 👏👏🤙
good i'm glad, i find this stuff really really interesting so i hope others will, so thank you. and it is nice to know
RETRO GAMING ARTS yeah man I didn’t know of this my ps2 is soft modded ..good to know this ty
Good video dude. Keep it up. Hope all is well.
Thank you buster. I appreciate it. And I dont have an answer. Other than I dont know.
@@RETROGAMINGARTS no problem dude. Just hold and carry on.
@@bustergundo516 good looks
First one I did was one of those 19+ wire ones. Such a nightmare that damn thing was.
Great video buddy. Where can I get hold of Mars Pro Chip?
Thanks a lot for your video ! I just got a PS2 with a Matrix MX4 installed and I was wondering if we can access settings on this chip using buttons combo at boot ? I tried tiangle + circle and triangle + square but no luck. I wanted to disable it using settings because the MX4 froze my PS2 when I'm booting with FMCB 1.966 😢
Hi! Excellent video! I have a PS2 SCPH-39001 with a Magic mod chip. It never worked well with PS2 backups. Any idea what could be the matter? Thanks in advance!
I installed a neokey long ago it was usb based with 1 wire. I also killed 2 fat model ps2 with that no solder pos kit you showed.
DAMN!
In the day I had a magic 3 in my ps2
Anyone here who remembers the Messiah? And what modchip uses a PS2 loader disc? I remember buying a Ps2 and a loader? Another alternative for this “loader” disc is to insert a Devil May Cry disc and eject it then put the bootleg game of your choice and it will load.
Hi, great video !!! BTW, I have V10 fat with the mentioned “LA protection chip”. It’s weird !!!
Do i need a laser fix chip with a SCPH-77001 ps2 slim?
PS2 fat is probably the best option as there is a actual ps1 in the console and has internal harddrive support, and the ps2 slim uses a emulator. IDK i heard this once a wile ago.
Just ordered the mars pro off ebay. hope it's as good as your saying.
My first PS2 mod chip was the Messiah. The good old days! Currently have a real legit green dot matrix infinity in my v5 PS2. By the way, I have just about all of the firmwares for the original Matrix Infinity. I will have to upload them and post a link.
HELL YES! glad you still have that green dot, the mesiah is one i'm missing in my collection
@@RETROGAMINGARTS I still have it somewhere. I moved a few months ago so not sure what box it's packed away in but I do still have it. I took it out of my PS2 when I got the Matrix.
Mars pro's are $40 on fringe websites. A lot of these other chips are like $2 on eBay.
To this day, I still kick myself for selling my USB Neokey back in the day. It is hopelessly impossible to find now.
Hay man
!
Thank you for the cool video.
I have a question about MarsPro GM-816HD
BIOS doesn't save config
Can i change the boot configuration?
(jumper/shorted/zero resistance)
I need the boot from the memory card to load by default.
Thanks in advance!
PS: SCPH-90008
Nice video. I want to know if the 02 chip firmware is still available. I have the infectus 2 chip. It works on many consoles. It says it recommended 02 modchip firmware compatible.
I had a console scph-70001 with an Actel chip. It worked fine but for some reason the console didn't have component output. I change the chip for a modbo 5.0 and now component output works.
You don't have a Messiah modchip. I remember i had a Messiah 2 Pro.
Is it any better than the others?
I also have the messiah 2 pro. I think i had this installed like over 15yrs ago. It's in a Gran Turismo 3 PS2 Bundle(red box)
Man this brings me way back. I've installed about 75% of these.
Where's the first no swap... The NEO4?
I dont have NEO4!my buddy got one he sent me a pic tho hahahaha
*i searched for this...*
but boi o boi what a weird thing to collect, and here i thought collecting stamps was dumb 😂
LOL! you searched for old ps2 modchips and found me and my videos? thats awesome i'm so glad you did, i got tons of ps2 modding videos check em out! and that stamp collecting joke had me dying lol
@@RETROGAMINGARTS yes am into these kinda obscure tech videos, definitely subbing you +
Thanks man, you just made my day
I am just in the middle of sorting out some old electronics to get rid off...
I got three modchips left over, new/unused in the original packaging how I bought them years ago...
One is a Neo 4 (or 4.1?) and the other one must be a Origa modchip. Back then i planned to install the Neo4 + Origa combo? I also got an new DMS3. What is the difference between a Neo 4 and 4.1, how to identify? Are there still any installation diagrams available, I was looking for some but did not find anything (yet)
OH man, came across this. I still have my PS2 Slim with Crystal Chip 2.0 (unsure if Pro or not), and still have CDs of the modified firmware for use. Can get that for you if you need....
Thats sooo dope!!
is there install/operation info for the "Mars Pro" board? i see it is still available to buy ?
I feel you don't give the Turbo enough love.
I sold my turbo, however, i do have a few turbo videos filmed that i have not yet edited yet, but i can
whatsup michael, how you been
@@RETROGAMINGARTS.... it's been a while. Thanks I've been good. I waited last Tuesday for a stream to no avail.....😫. But hey, you're busy with a job and you'll stream when you have a chance.
@@RETROGAMINGARTS..... It will be awesome if you put them in your channel.
No idea when streams will be. At random. But videos are back now that I'm settled
My uncle bought an Asian Fat PS2 SCPH-30006 back on 08/25/2002 with a mod chip pre-installed that will play original and back-up PS2, PS1, and DVD movie discs from any region. It does straight boot-up for PS2 discs but not for PS1 discs and DVD movie discs. To play PS1 games or watch DVD movies, you have to insert the disc, place the PS2 into standby mode, then hold down firmly on the reset button during boot-up until the disc is read.
I'm guessing my uncle's PS2 has a very early Magic or Matrix mod chip. What modchip does straight boot-up for PS2, PS1, and DVD movie discs as if it were an unmoded PS2 that shows the PS2 and PS1 logo on boot-up without doing the aforementioned reset trickery involved with the early mod chips?
think i have an old dms from like 2000. dude that did it looked like how you did your wiring
I have a modbo4.0 on a slim 77001 silver it can not deactivated even if you turned off and shows desable you have to make a switch in the voltage of the chip and the the sistema online do not detect it . It has semi auto boot and mc boot.
I have a Matrix MXL2 on my PS2
Pretty good
I found a modchip in my old ps2(didn’t know it was a modded one) called sun9. I can’t find any information about it anywhere on the net, maybe you know something about it?
hy mate I would have another question.. The modbo systems I have done, made the output video quality somewhat noisy (Its noticeable when looking at black, but you need to focus to see it.) I taught that was just my video cable, but I tried an unmodded system that didnt have this noise. Do the mars pro affects the video quality?
Interesting, I personally haven't noticed any video quality effects from any chip, so if I say mars pro doesn't effect quality, i may be wrong, but its worth a try.
Just goy my modded ps2 out had red light of death turns out was just the battry glad i kept it all these years remember when my dad got it chipped not sure what chip ive got i didnt take much notuce kinda wanna open it back up and find out now lol
I recently bought a Ps2 Slim 75000 series when I cleaned it and applied new Thermal Paste I saw it had a Neo Fix that white one But with a Modbo 5.0?
Why do think that is?
I have the DMS 4 ezi... my console won’t turn on at all so I assume the chip killed it? I’m not skilled enough to solder install something like this and was wondering if you think it would still work if I uninstalled it to use on another ps2?
Does the Mars Pro GM-806 have a configuration menu? I have it on a SCPH-75001
Kinda new to this scene but what would you say is the best all around chip for use right now In 2022 and for what version PS2 would it be for? Thank you so much for your answer or anyone who can answer this !
I remember I had it for ps2 fat apple 2 chip as far as I remember it 🤔
Do you think you can make a video on the v9/10 and slim v12/13 laser fixes such as the diode fix, Some0ne's fix, the PIC fix ect. Documentation online is sparse. Might want to break it into two parts, one for SCPH-5000x(v9/10) and one for SCPH-7000x(v12/13).
Also you missed 3 mods, only the last one is a mod chip though; The HD Connect and HD Combo added HDD support to the v12/13 slim models since the drive interface is still technically on the board. And the HDpro, which adds HDD support to the later slims through a mod chip.
I'm struggling to find info on laser protection as well. In fact, just wondering in case you had any answers for my question.
I'm looking to install the Mars Pro gm-816hd chip (as RetroGamingArts metions these are highly reliable). I wanted further info about laser protection as I have a vulnerable PS2 slim SCPH-7000x model.
Will the Mars Pro chip work properly alongside the Matrix PIC fix chip? I've seen people recommend using the PIC fix alongside Modbo chips; but am struggling for info regarding the Mars Pro.

Edit: clean up, added a few more, removed stuff that got mixed in (sorry about that).
It is so hard to find information on the different user interfaces for these. It would be super cool if you could do a video on that.

@@RETROGAMINGARTS oh please, youtubing anything discussing mod chips is lack, yours was really one of 3 i saw...
I bought a used ps2 slim with matrix infinity 1.93 installed how do i know if it is original chip?
OOOO!! EXCITING! take it apart and look! If you do, send me a pic of it on twitter or Instagram!
Is it possible to reprogram your consoles region with a FreeMcBoot memory card now? I know these chips were big for it back in the day, I want to get an original PS2 10000 model from Japan, try to get it region free so I can run my American library on it. There’s a guy who posted a video on UA-cam where he got one that was modded with a Messiah chip, apparently an American army guy was stationed over in Japan when it came out and that’s why he had the mod chip installed, the guy who posted the video is the second owner. But I know that the EEPROM for laser drivers can be reprogrammed with FreeMcBoot with a special program, I’m wondering if there’s a similar utility for region unlocking or if I’d have to install one of these chips. AWESOME video though 😎👏🏻
Maybe you could donate this to a video game museum. :]
Maybe once I collect every single one
@@RETROGAMINGARTS Great! 💪
I bought a PS2 model 39001 with Mars III MA-502, have you heard about this chip ?
Not sure if you'll see this but is it still possible to get a Marspro chip? Looking on Ebay I've only been able to find the Modbo 5.0. I tried Modchipcentral and they didn't have one either, so if the Modbo 5.0 works well enough I'll just go with that.
great video , i have a fat ps2 model scph-30001 playes most burt games but will not play my overseas games . is there possibly a boot sequence i have to do like you mentioned ??
Do you know what chip is inside?
Not sure , is there a way to tell without tearing it apart.
Turn on the ps2, hold start while turning it on, tell me if you see a screen that saids "DISABLED"
take a pic if you can, and send me the pic on instagram or twitter or something
Sent you a PM to your Instagram 👍
U can’t receive the old chips with the ones u have bro ? Or are they patent protected
Hy! You didnt speak about modbo differences, I did have chipped a few machines with them. I have a question however, Once I did a 30004 with Modbo 4, the only issue I got with it, that it couldnt boot protected PS1 games (like resident evil 2) other titles booted fine. I didnt experienced this on the other machine I did, wich was a 77004 with Modbo 5. Im courius, did anyone had that issue with modbo 4, or its more likely a motherboard or wiring point problem?!
The Mars Pro is a clone of the DMS 4, you can check that in the modchips menu (hold square on boot). I personally don't like this chip, as it cannot save the settings - which means you can't change anything in the menu. This is bad, because settings like DVD9 DL patching is set to disabled by default.
Hello! I plan to chip my recently bought 50004 wich is in like-new condition! I have experience only with modbo's, once I did a 30004 with modbo 4, and it failed to boot protected ps1 games (like resident evil 2) . Other machines I did with modbo 5 were fine. I see you like the mars pro, over it, can it auto boot ps1 games?
Yes

@@RETROGAMINGARTS it's from venezuela
Couldn't tell u. I bought off ebay . I know that they seem ok now though
I recently bought a PS2 that was unknowingly modded (only found out it was modded as I got bored and decided to test one of my Japanese games) and was wondering if anyone would have any information at all on the Mars 2 M320-LB mod chip because I can't find any info on it and it's the mod chip in the PS2 I bought (I had to do a teardown to find out what mod chip it was)
Hey bro you know the Thunder pro 2? I have this on my ps2slim.
where can i find the guides of the wiring for each chip?
I can swap "MESSIAH 2+" (with the end teeth pins) in original plastic, to some modbo 5.0 chips, if you are interested?
Did I just hear the junk heap Nier as background music?
Hell yes
background music killer instinct 2
Hell yea!
@Retro Gaming Arts
So if I am going to mod my Ps2, which chip do u recommend that is actually available today?
Well, in the video I said mars pro. But that's not entirely true anymore. So what I would go with is modbo5.0 1.93.
Mine has Mars Revolution, on startup it says Infinity 1.93, any info on that? I always had problems running PS1 backups on it tho.
My matrix infinity wil not boot each time. The console was in good condition but after 10 years of storage she won't work as it has to.
Most time it's like a freeze on matrix's Logo, nothing work. Sometimes i can go in the menu, sometimes not...
But if she boot normaly, all is working....
Anybody know if this issue and is it the modchip or the console ? Thanks
Hey have you heard before of mods for the slim line PS2 (i think 7000x series) that bring support for (or retro fit) ide HDDs (not over the USB port but instead, really bringing the HDD back like the fat PS2 supported it). I have seen some Videos on youtube about those mods but they were spanish or russian so it wasnt really that helpful.
Looks like the your disc holder will falling off
